[1:41] <Gallomimia> gnarface i used -o hdmi flag in options on the command line for omxplayer
[1:41] <Gallomimia> which i found by using --help :P since it had no man page on my system
[1:41] <gnarface> ah
[1:41] <gnarface> yes i assumed you just knew about --help already
[1:41] <gnarface> and were refusing to read it
[1:42] <Gallomimia> well, hadn't considered it for whatever reason
[1:42] <gnarface> had i known you weren't using the analog output for audio it would have been obvious
[1:42] <Gallomimia> i grew up hearing "read the man pages"
[1:42] <gnarface> but i don't actually do sound over hdmi here
[1:42] <gnarface> it should have a manpage but raspbian isn't really what you'd consider finished

[2:52] <samirext> hi!
[2:52] <samirext> hey guys, i'm having troubles installing raspbian
[2:53] <ParkerR_> Shoot
[2:54] <ParkerR_> samirext, What's the issue?
[2:55] <samirext> well, i explain; if i try to "burn" the image of raspbian using win32 diskimager
[2:55] <samirext> it does not occur anything
[2:55] <ParkerR_> Hmm running it as admin?
[2:55] <samirext> if i try it with arch linux it works perfectly
[2:55] <samirext> yep
[2:57] <samirext> i don't know what could be, i use the image of wheezy availble at downloads section on raspberrypi.org
[2:57] <samirext> verified with SHA1
[2:58] <ParkerR_> Could just be a bug
[2:59] <samirext> do you have any ideas to solve it ?
[3:01] <samirext> why it could work with arch linux and not with debian assuming that the image is not failed
[3:01] <ParkerR_> Not sure. It has always worked for me
[3:01] <samirext> :C
[3:01] <ParkerR_> Win32disakimager that is
[3:01] <ParkerR_> *Win32diskimager
[3:01] <samirext> may it be the sd card ? i use a 4gb micro sd, class 4
[3:01] <samirext> hmmm

[4:26] <damo22> hi dovecot-imapd cant install on my raspbian
[4:26] <damo22> it fails because ipv6 isnt an option on my system and it fails to start the listeners
[4:27] <damo22> this error is considered fatal to the installation and thus the package can never be configured
[4:27] <damo22> anyone know what i can do?

[4:29] <gnarface> did you disable ipv6?
[4:29] <damo22> not that i know of
[4:30] <damo22> i would prefer to run ipv4
[4:30] <gnarface> does your /etc/hosts file have http://paste.debian.net/221547/ these lines in it?
[4:30] <damo22> yes
[4:31] <gnarface> having ipv6 locally *shouldn't* break anything if your isp only supports ipv4
[4:31] <gnarface> no idea what's wrong though, sorry
[4:31] <damo22> is there a kernel module i can try to modprobe to enable ipv6?
[4:33] <gnarface> hmm. if there is it would be somewhere in /lib/modules/[kernel version]/
[4:33] <damo22> hahaha
[4:33] <damo22> it worked after i did modprobe ipv6
[4:33] <gnarface> that's essentially how i got sound working...
[4:34] <gnarface> looked in the module directory and modprobed stuff in the sound directory till it worked

[6:02] <Gallomimia> i need more swap space. can anyone point me at a guide to modify that?
[6:03] <sney> Gallomimia, create an empty file of the size you want on whatever filesystem you care to use, and activate it with swapon.
[6:03] <sney> OR
[6:04] <sney> create a partition somewhere you have space, and do the same.
[6:04] <sney> oh, sorry, that's mkswap and then swapon.
[6:04] <Gallomimia> seems it already has swap space. i need to grow it
[6:04] <Gallomimia> keep crashing my browser with out of memory error

[6:04] <sney> you can have as many swaps as you want
[6:05] <sney> if you've ever been a windows user, it's the same thing as virtual memory. it just turns some part of a disk into ram
[6:05] <sney> and if one of them fills up, it uses another

[6:05] <Gallomimia> thank the net i have never been a windows user. i would prefer if you never bring it up again
[6:06] <sney> it's generally advised to put swap on whatever disk device you have that has the fastest i/o. loading things back into memory from a slow disk is a painful experience
[6:06] <Gallomimia> we're all talking about rpi's here right?
[6:07] <sney> that's relatively fastest, for those of us who need constant reminders that the rpi could not be considered "fast" unless, maybe, you went back in time to 1995
[6:07] <Gallomimia> i remember
[6:07] <Gallomimia> i'm a mac user so, vmem is all one file back in those days
[6:08] <sney> ok, so same principle essentially, just linux is able to use as many swapfiles and partitions as you care to throw at it
[6:08] <Gallomimia> i've made swap files in ubuntu before... don't i have to do some dd stuff to make an empty file?
[6:09] <sney> the command "dd if=/dev/zero of=swapfilename bs=1024 count=X" will give you a swap file of size X bytes
[6:09] <sney> increasing bs, or byte size, may be useful for your sanity.
[6:09] <sney> or you can just hit zero a bunch of times and hope for the best.
[6:09] <Gallomimia> i'm not particularly sure about how much faster the onboard sd slot is than any USB mounted drives
[6:30] <Gallomimia> got that done. thanks for the tips sney

[16:51] <Phonestar> :-(
[16:51] <plugwash> hi
[16:54] <vagrantc> plugwash: hrm. testfpe spit out an error for me ... although i think i'm using the kernel cross-built with qemu.
[16:54] <plugwash> it's meant to spit out an error
[16:55] <vagrantc> oh, good.
[16:55] <vagrantc> plugwash: An unhandled exception occurred at $000081A4 :
[16:55] <vagrantc> EInvalidOp : Invalid floating point operation
[16:55] <vagrantc> $000081A4
[16:55] <plugwash> basically it does a division by zero with floating point exceptions enabled
[16:56] <vagrantc> hopefully that's the "correct" error :)
[16:56] <plugwash> if floating point exceptions are working correctly it gives that exception
[16:56] <plugwash> if floating point exceptions are not supported by the hardware (as they aren't on most armv7 stuff) it should output "inf"
[16:57] * Shaan7 (~quassel@kde/developer/shantanu) has joined #raspbian
[16:57] <plugwash> on the previous kernel in the raspbian repos it did neither, instead it crashed the kernel
[16:57] <vagrantc> plugwash: regarding long-term kernel maintenance, the 3.2.x kernels will continue to be security supported in debian and probably require very little patching, so i'd suggest supporting that.
[16:57] <vagrantc> plugwash: er, 3.2.35 that is
[16:58] <vagrantc> plugwash: and there will likely be backports of newer kernels, but that will involve continually rebasing the patches (unless rpi gets all the patches merged upstream... which is actualyl the best approach)
[16:59] <plugwash> yeah the problem is that AIUI the rpf are still sorting out issues with their kernel code
[17:00] <plugwash> and they seem to be moving on from 3.2.x

[17:04] <plugwash> The plan is to have both raspbian wheezy and raspbian jessie

[17:04] <vagrantc> sure
[17:05] <plugwash> in particular I want to move to a new build cluster, hopefully sponsored by bytemark
[17:05] <vagrantc> i'm biased, but i'd say follow wheezy as much as possible for raspbian/wheezy, and maybe support a backport from backports.debian.org for a few select things.
[17:06] <vagrantc> you'll have to do all the same patching work for the jesse kernels
[17:06] <plugwash> a build cluster in someones basement is a less than an ideal soloution........
[17:07] <vagrantc> no doubt
[17:07] <plugwash> but when setting up the new build cluster we want better build hardware and build hardware that is both better than what we have and affordable currently seems to be "just arround the corner"
[17:09] <plugwash> (currently we use freescale imx53 quickstart boards, they work ok but some packages take days to build on them)

[19:54] <mashk> Vegar, I dont see button, and I thought lanchpad is ubuntu related
[19:54] <mashk> Vegar, to reportbug tool in rasbian I guess it will forward report to maintainer
[19:55] <plugwash> reportbug will end up in the debian bugtracker
[19:55] <plugwash> which is fine for bugs that affect debian too, not so good for raspbian specific stuff
