[0:32] <AngelKing47> Hello
[0:33] <AngelKing47> I am sooo soo stuck, I am trying to get a raw raspbian netinstaller working
[0:33] <AngelKing47> http://elinux.org/RPi_Advanced_Setup#important_steps
[0:33] <AngelKing47> I have done every thing and still no display
[0:34] <AngelKing47> the files I have got are: bootcode.bin cmdline.txt config.txt kernel.img loader.bin README.txt start.elf
[0:34] <AngelKing47> And still I get ACT(green) light go up then off, then only the power light stays on (RED). Display never comes up
[0:35] <AngelKing47> I have HDMI, Ethernet and USB keyboard plugged int
[0:35] <AngelKing47> in*
[0:36] <gnarface> i think you might be following the wrong instructions AHammar
[0:36] <gnarface> i mean AngelKing47
[0:36] <gnarface> (sorry AHammar, ignore me)
[0:37] <AngelKing47> Got a link to one?
[0:37] <gnarface> yes http://www.raspbian.org/RaspbianInstaller
[0:37] <AngelKing47> Yes I have been following that as well, but that is so vague
[0:38] <AngelKing47> The files on the SD card are from that Zip
[0:38] <AngelKing47> my SD card has two partitions according to the other link
[0:38] <AngelKing47> none works
[0:38] <gnarface> it helps to be familiar with debian for parts, for other parts it helps to just actually be doing it, exactly as its said
[0:39] <AngelKing47> I wouldnt call my self a debian, or a kernel pro. But I know what im doing when it comes to partitioning, the guide mentions FAT32 partition, but forgets to say weather it should be boot or not
[0:39] <AngelKing47> really i have been at this for 5 hours
[0:40] <gnarface> the /boot partition?
[0:40] <AngelKing47> Should the HDMI display come up if I do things right
[0:40] <AngelKing47> yes /boot partition is
[0:40] <AngelKing47> hang on
[0:40] <gnarface> here's the thing, the link YOU posted, was for a headless install...
[0:40] <gnarface> to me, a "headless install" means no display
[0:40] <gnarface> ssh only
[0:40] <gnarface> so that is my primary assumption of the problem at hand
[0:41] <AngelKing47> /dev/sdd1 * 63 144584 72261 c W95 FAT32 (LBA)
[0:41] <AngelKing47> But I havent even got that far
[0:41] <gnarface> oh
[0:41] <AngelKing47> There is no ethernet lights
[0:41] <gnarface> hmm
[0:41] <gnarface> there may not be, until it boots
[0:41] <gnarface> i forget honestly
[0:41] <AngelKing47> so given sdd1, I run `unzip rpi-installer_08-19-12.zip`
[0:41] * arifnd (~arifnd@114.79.19.47) has joined #raspbian
[0:42] <AngelKing47> plug the card into the Pi and nothing
[0:42] <arifnd> Hi
[0:42] <AngelKing47> Well I get Green go on then off, while Red stays on
[0:42] <AngelKing47> and no display
[0:42] <AngelKing47> no netinstall display
[0:42] <gnarface> what is your power source?
[0:42] <AngelKing47> 5v 1A
[0:43] <gnarface> that sounds like what happened when i tried to power mine from a wii usb port on standby...
[0:43] <AngelKing47> yes but the whole thing works fine if I do a dd the image to the sdcard
[0:43] <gnarface> but maybe the problem here is something more obvious
[0:43] <AngelKing47> just the netinstall does not want to work
[0:43] * vagrantc (~vagrant@freegeek/vagrantc) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[0:44] <gnarface> i'm sure there is something we're forgetting here...
[0:45] <AngelKing47> It just does not want to work, as if it is against me
[0:45] <AngelKing47> sorry the power is 5V 1.2A
[0:45] <AngelKing47> not sure if that makes a difference
[0:45] <AngelKing47> @gnarface have you got a working Pi next to you
[0:45] <AngelKing47> what is your ll /boot
[0:46] <AngelKing47> sorry `ls -la /boot`
[0:47] <gnarface> AngelKing47: i can plug it in, gimme a second
[0:47] <AngelKing47> gnarface: please that would be great
[0:52] <gnarface> AngelKing47: http://paste.debian.net/7208/
[0:53] <AngelKing47> I am missing fixup.dat
[0:53] <gnarface> AngelKing47: the only files beginning with . in that directory are . and ..
[0:53] <gnarface> AngelKing47: for all i know, those files came after install
[0:54] <gnarface> AngelKing47: what is in your config.txt ?
[0:54] <gnarface> AngelKing47: you probably should make sure to read this http://elinux.org/RPi_config.txt
[0:55] <AngelKing47> minimal
[0:55] <AngelKing47> http://paste.debian.net/7209/
[0:55] <AngelKing47> I should try copying the example one, let me try that
[0:56] <AngelKing47> here goes nothing
[0:56] <gnarface> hmm. i'm using gpu_mem_512=128
[0:57] <gnarface> AngelKing47: well, here's mine: http://paste.debian.net/7210/
[0:58] <AngelKing47> let me try yours
[1:01] <gnarface> the hdmi settings are very device-specific
[1:01] <AngelKing47> gnarface: same problem
[1:01] <AngelKing47> I have revB
[1:01] <gnarface> that's the 512 one right?
[1:01] <AngelKing47> I believe so
[1:03] <gnarface> did you try the composite output?
[1:03] <gnarface> also, there was a way to get a list of hdmi options for your display
[1:03] <gnarface> hmm. you might have to get it booting to use that though
[1:03] <AngelKing47> no I dont have the composite output cable
[1:04] <AngelKing47> Shall I try using the recommended image to see the settings before running the netinstall
[1:04] <AngelKing47> gnarface: Thanks for your help
[1:05] <AngelKing47> I think it will be tomorrow where I shall have to tackle this
[1:05] <gnarface> AngelKing47: wait one sec, what's your fdisk -l of that sd card?
[1:05] <gnarface> AngelKing47: here's my installed one http://paste.debian.net/7211/
[1:08] <AngelKing47> kk
[1:08] <AngelKing47> hang on
[1:09] <AngelKing47> gnarface: http://paste.debian.net/7213/ fdisk -l
[1:09] <gnarface> definitely missing one
[1:10] <gnarface> i think you need it to have that swap partition there
[1:10] <AngelKing47> oh OK
[1:10] <gnarface> it might be picky about the size of that too
[1:10] <gnarface> if i recall, its picky about the size of /boot and the swap partition
[1:10] <gnarface> and the format types of all the partitions
[1:11] <gnarface> but think it will also just automatically stretch the third partition to fill the remainder of whatever sized sd card you put in there
[1:11] <gnarface> mine was barely big enough for a minimal install and some window manager stuff so i moved /usr to external usb storage after install
[1:12] <AngelKing47> Right let me try that
[1:12] <gnarface> didn't some README or somethign say all that?
[1:12] <AngelKing47> no very vague
[1:12] <gnarface> general rule, if you unzip something and see a file that says README, read it
[1:12] <gnarface> i swear i read this somewhere
[1:12] <gnarface> maybe it was in that forum thread
[1:12] <AngelKing47> I cant find where that is then, its not in the readme
[1:13] <AngelKing47> let me try mimicing your partition table
[1:13] <gnarface> if i stepped through a whole install again with you i could probably see exactly what you're doing wrong
[1:13] <gnarface> its gotta be something simple
[1:14] <gnarface> gotta go right now though, sorry
[1:14] <AngelKing47> cool thanks for you help
[1:14] <gnarface> no problem, good luck
[1:14] <gnarface> i should get any messages you leave in this channel for later

[10:37] <AngelKing47> Does any one know that a 5V 3.0A be sufficent for a Pi
[10:38] <phako> my powersupply has 1200mA
[10:39] <FR^2> More than sufficient.
[10:39] <FR^2> afaik, power throughput to the raspi's usb ports is rather limited.
[10:40] <FR^2> So if you assume with that power supply you can attach a usb harddisk without its own power supply, I guess it won't work perfectly.

[10:41] <AngelKing47> FR^2: is that to say it will work OK with 3.0A, and if any prephrials USB/GPIO require AMP, the 3.0A current running through the Pi wont fry it
[10:42] * CME (~CME@146-52-14-61-dynip.superkabel.de) has joined #raspbian
[10:45] <FR^2> minimum is 700mA, a little safety margin is not bad, but 3A seems overkill. I don't have sufficient knowledge to rule out any disadvantages like frying your raspi.
[10:45] <gordonDrogon> please let us know how you get on with that...
[10:46] <gordonDrogon> The tracking on the Pi really isn't designed for that much current - and the input polyfuse will trip at 700mA or so... far better to externally power high power devices.
[10:47] <AngelKing47> gordonDrogon: Externally means I have to put more Voltage steppers, Maybe need to go back to the drawing board
[10:47] <AngelKing47> gordonDrogon: FR^2: thanks any way
[10:48] <gordonDrogon> AngelKing47, what are you powering?
[10:51] <AngelKing47> I want to be able to power the pi and prepherals from a 4s Li-Po battery passed through a Voltage Stepper http://goo.gl/4K5Ns, the GPIO will then pass its power to a Gyro, GPS, Wifi(USB)/3G(USB) and/or Sensors(Ultrasonic)
[10:51] <AngelKing47> oh and a servo, controller, with up to 3-4 servo's attached
[10:52] <gordonDrogon> AngelKing47, ok - just use that to generate your 5v supply, feed it into the Pi and use it to power the peripherals directly.
[10:52] <gordonDrogon> you won't need another converter as long as that can supply enough current - just don't have the current going through the Pi.
[10:53] <gordonDrogon> use a powered usb hub to power the usb peripherals - power the hub from the converter.

[10:54] <AngelKing47> yarg
[10:55] <AngelKing47> yes*
[10:55] <gordonDrogon> in which case... solder power to the usb connectors from the convertor. run wires from that to the µUSB input.
[10:55] <gordonDrogon> you might want to consider using a fuse, but ...
[10:56] <gordonDrogon> that way the higher current for the usb peripherals won't go over the Pi motherboard.
[10:56] <gordonDrogon> I'd probably stick an additional decoupling capacitor there too.
[10:57] <AngelKing47> Actually looking through the sensors readings, most of them require 5mA or 15mA
[10:57] <AngelKing47> so a 1.2A would be fine
[10:57] <gordonDrogon> http://i.imgur.com/GRYED.jpg
[10:57] <gordonDrogon> if doing that, then personally I'd take the black wire right back to the µUSB input like the Red one is.
[10:58] <gordonDrogon> and bypass the polyfuse...
[10:58] <AngelKing47> just need to find a stepper that will convert 14.8V to 5V 1.2A
[10:58] <AngelKing47> rather than 5V 3.0A
[10:58] <gordonDrogon> the sensors will probably be ok - it's the USB peripherals that will be the current suckers.
[10:58] <gordonDrogon> that converter wil lbe fine - the current rating is the max. current - not what it will foce!
[10:59] <AngelKing47> oh thanks for that picture
[10:59] <gordonDrogon> if you don't understand that, then go and read-up on ohms law.
[10:59] <AngelKing47> I am a noob at currents
[10:59] <AngelKing47> I think I need to
[10:59] <gordonDrogon> a device will only take what it needs.
[11:00] <gordonDrogon> How will you control the ESCs on the Quad?
[11:00] * FR^2 .oO( okay, I don't have to be ashamed of my soldering skills... )
[11:01] <AngelKing47> The battery is split into 2, the first wire connected through the DJI Naza flamewheel, which will provide the 14.8V required, and the other wire, through a V stepdown as per the link, for the Pi, and boards
[11:01] <AngelKing47> the control connection to the ESC, is through Pi->ServoController->ESC
[11:01] <gordonDrogon> go read up on LiPo charging and use too - there is a lot of material out there. You want to make sure you charge them properly. Especially multi packs like that.
[11:02] <AngelKing47> I shall
[11:03] <AngelKing47> By split into two I didnt meant, two batteries, I ment wire splitting
[11:03] <gordonDrogon> sure- but to get 14.7v you have 4 cells connected together...
[11:03] <AngelKing47> but I can see a problem here, I think One requires 14.8V and the other 5V which means 4S battery is not sufficent
[11:04] <gordonDrogon> the motors will run directly off the 14.8 - the control electronics will need 5v. using the 14.8 to generate the 5v is fine.
[11:05] <gordonDrogon> although you need good decoupling - big capacitors.
[11:06] <AngelKing47> you know 50% of our conversation I have to refer to wiki
[11:06] <AngelKing47> gordonDrogon: Thanks anyway
[11:06] <dwatkins> I'd get a purpose-made charging circuit such as one from Adafruit. They seem to know what they're doing: http://www.adafruit.com/products/390
[11:07] <gordonDrogon> dwatkins, that's for charging a single cell - for a 4 cell unit like that you really need something mains powered that can do cell balancing.
[11:08] <gordonDrogon> there are lots of good places - really look at the UAV/robotics sites for that sort of thing.
[11:08] <dwatkins> aha I see
[11:08] <gordonDrogon> LiPo's are like little bombs - you really do want to treat them with care - they're fantastic though - well worth looking after.
[11:09] <gordonDrogon> just google for laptop/iphones bursting into flames, etc. .. )-:
[11:09] <gordonDrogon> and boing dreamliners!
[11:09] <AngelKing47> gordonDrogon: Dreamliners :D
[11:10] <gordonDrogon> I used to do a lot of scuba diving, and one person I knew had a heated waistcoat to wear under his drysuit to keep warm (we were doing very deep and 3-4 hour long dives). One dive his suit flooded lsightly and shorted the LiPo battery - and it got so hot he had to abort the dive, when whe we got his kit off him, the battery was smoking and he had 3rd degree burns on his side )-:
[11:11] <gordonDrogon> being on-fire underwater was something of an odd experience!

[23:13] <gnarface> dwatkins: it was my somewhat recent experience that we still need wpa-supplicant, but you can now leave it at the default config and put the ssid/passphrase in /etc/network/interfaces anyway
[23:14] <gnarface> dwatkins: have you managed to get your network connected using WPA2 TKIP/PSK encryption without wpa-supplicant??
[23:15] <dwatkins> thanks gnarface, I tried various combinations but must have put the wrong type of passphrase in as I kept getting repeating errors from security-rma
[23:15] <dwatkins> gnarface: no, I havn't tried downgrading the security to WPA yet
[23:16] <gnarface> dwatkins: i imagine if you are using WEP, or not enforcing encryption, you don't need wpa-supplicant. but like i said, i seemed to need to install it to get mine working, though i did not have problems using /etc/network/interfaces alone for the network configuration
[23:16] <dwatkins> I'm using WPA2.
[23:16] <dwatkins> I thought I'd got it working on the other Pi, will have to check the config on it.
[23:17] <gnarface> and actually now that i think of it, the behavior i observed sounds similar to what you described; the hardware seemed to connect, and even show up on the router as connected, but it also seemed to behave like my password was wrong and not actually allow me to auth/pass traffic/get dhcp ip address, etc, until i installed wpa-supplicant and then stopped/started networking and it magicallyw orked
[23:17] <gnarface> *magically worked
[23:18] <gnarface> i can't speak to whether this was always the case though
[23:18] <gnarface> this was my first try with wireless on the pi and it was recent
[23:18] <gnarface> also had to install the firmware package from non-free
[23:20] <dwatkins> interesting, I put my wpa-psk and ssid into the file /etc/network/interfaces, and didn't create /etc/wpa-supplicant/wpa-supplicant.conf but it didn't occur to me that it might need to be installed
[23:20] <dwatkins> wpa-supplicant, the package, that is
