[0:14] <MachinaeWolf> yep that image works
[0:14] <MachinaeWolf> the old preinstalled one
[0:14] <gnarface> hooraaay!
[0:15] <gnarface> well that's some evidence at least
[0:15] <gnarface> if i were you i'd make sure i had a pristine copy backup of that pre-installed one, then try a firmware update to see if it still works afterwards on the new SD card
[0:15] <gnarface> your issue could be related to a new-firmware conflicting with this particular card
[0:15] <gnarface> (seems like a rare chance to me but possible)
[0:16] <gnarface> oh, obviously though do a full apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade of debian too after that
[0:16] <gnarface> er, sorry *raspbian i mean
[0:21] <MachinaeWolf> right
[0:27] * vagrantc (~vagrant@freegeek/vagrantc) Quit (Quit: leaving)
[0:39] <gnarface> MachinaeWolf: i'd still be curious how this works for you, if you get time to try it: http://www.raspbian.org/RaspbianInstaller
[0:40] <gnarface> MachinaeWolf: my current primary suspect for your issue is a partitioning error. what type of sd card reader are you using to write the initial image?
[0:45] * daveee123 (~daveee123@ip-210-100.oberlin.net) has joined #raspbian
[0:47] <MachinaeWolf> not sure it's an internal laptop one
[0:51] <MachinaeWolf> to add a user to the /etc/group do you put a : or a , between users?
[0:53] * GenRipper (GenRipper@S010600226b541469.hm.shawcable.net) has joined #raspbian

[1:02] <gnarface> should work too, may also require the target user relog for changes to take effect though
[1:04] <MachinaeWolf> I will

[1:18] * daveee123 (~daveee123@ip-210-100.oberlin.net) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[1:24] <gnarface> MachinaeWolf: you still got your backup of the working image though right?
[1:24] <gnarface> MachinaeWolf: better safe than sorry
[1:24] <MachinaeWolf> yeah
[1:24] <MachinaeWolf> of course

[2:53] <gnarface> MachinaeWolf: you should expect installation to flash to be VERY slow compared to your experiences with pc hardware using even very old magnetic storage
[2:53] <MachinaeWolf> ah
[2:54] <gnarface> MachinaeWolf: i would say don't worry unless it has been more than 24 hours. its worth noting here though that the raspbian installer (as opposed to the pre-installed image from the foundation) allows you to only install what you wanted, which may significantly decrease total image size
[2:54] <MachinaeWolf> ah
[2:54] <gnarface> MachinaeWolf: i can get probably a 1.5 hours install with the raspbian one.... the foundation's pre-installed image, if i recall right, took me like 4 hours total just because of how huge it was
[2:55] <MachinaeWolf> :o
[2:55] <gnarface> MachinaeWolf: its worth noting though that i only am using a few packages, so a minimal install is closer to my target
[2:55] <MachinaeWolf> ah
[2:56] <gnarface> but different SD cards are tuned differently for different file sizes/throughput/burst rates, etc
[2:57] <gnarface> so you'll find in general very unpredictable times for different SD mediums
[2:57] <MachinaeWolf> right
[2:57] <gnarface> i have the best luck with camera-grade stuff because it does better with larger file wirtes
[2:57] <gnarface> *writess*
[2:57] <gnarface> sigh
[2:57] <gnarface> writes*
[2:57] <gnarface> your mileage may vary though

[3:55] <MachinaeWolf> What command do I run to get the ip of the pi to ssh or sftp?
[3:59] <atouk> on the pi, or a pc on the network
[3:59] <MachinaeWolf> on the pi
[4:00] <atouk> ifconfig
[4:00] <MachinaeWolf> ah well I tried the 192.168.0.168 as stated by that but it said ssh: connect to host 192.168.0.168 port 22: No route to host
[4:00] <MachinaeWolf> Couldn't read packet: Connection reset by peer
[4:01] <MachinaeWolf> thought maybe I did something wrong?
[4:01] <atouk> is the rest of your network 192.168.0.* or 192.168.1.*
[4:02] <MachinaeWolf> Yeah this laptop states 192.168.0.198
[4:02] <atouk> and did you do a static IP on the pi, or dhcp
[4:02] <MachinaeWolf> er don't think so
[4:02] <MachinaeWolf> I did tell it to enable ssh though
[4:02] <MachinaeWolf> on the raspi-config
[4:03] <atouk> can you ping it from the pc?
[4:03] <MachinaeWolf> the pi ip?
[4:04] <atouk> yup
[4:04] <atouk> or ping it by name
[4:04] <MachinaeWolf> yeah 2 packets transmitted as I told it to and it also said pipe 2
[4:06] <atouk> and it won't ssh from pc?
[4:06] <MachinaeWolf> nope
[4:06] <atouk> putty?
[4:07] <MachinaeWolf> well I'm using linux on this laptop so sftp as is the case was sufficient just didn't do...
[4:08] <atouk> did you reboot pi after enabling ssh
[4:08] <MachinaeWolf> yeah
[4:09] <atouk> can you try to ssh from a different machine? might be laptop, ot the pi

[4:25] <MachinaeWolf> atouk, well winscp and putty on the windows desktop both said connection timed out and didn't connect
[4:31] <hifi> can you ssh to localhost *on* the pi
[4:31] <MachinaeWolf> hmm didn't try that one
[4:31] <hifi> that gives a good reading if the ssh server is at all running
[4:31] <hifi> and accepting connections
[4:34] <MachinaeWolf> ssh: connect to host 127.0.0.1 port 22: Connection refused
[4:34] <MachinaeWolf> What's bcast?
[4:34] * Blizzbob (~Blizzbob@tmo-101-70.customers.d1-online.com) Quit ()
[4:35] * zomgbie (~jesus@h081217190090.dyn.cm.kabsi.at) has joined #raspbian
[4:35] <hifi> it really seems you don't have the ssh server running
[4:35] <hifi> if you do "service sshd restart", does that do anything?
[4:36] <MachinaeWolf> unrecognized service it says
[4:37] * ph-enigma (~quassel@d67-193-151-201.home3.cgocable.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 256 seconds)
[4:37] <hifi> it seems wait, no d
[4:37] <MachinaeWolf> Also everytime I do a sudo command it fusses about my hostname
[4:37] <hifi> 'service ssh restart'
[4:37] <MachinaeWolf> oh ok
[4:38] <hifi> should be sshd though
[4:38] <MachinaeWolf> it said it's restarting it
[4:38] * phenigma (~quassel@d67-193-151-201.home3.cgocable.net) has joined #raspbian
[4:38] <hifi> ah, ok, can you now ssh to localhost on the pi?
[4:38] <MachinaeWolf> still no dice on either ip :/
[4:38] <MachinaeWolf> MOCP playing: Firewind - Maniac - Premonition - 00:05/04:55
[4:38] <hifi> something is really broken
[4:39] <MachinaeWolf> well I didn't break anything...
[4:39] <MachinaeWolf> so idk
[4:39] <hifi> the best thing would be to see what sshd says in the system logs when it restarted
[4:39] <hifi> if you have a typo in sshd_config
[4:43] <MachinaeWolf> k which log?
[4:43] <MachinaeWolf> I rebooted the pi
[4:45] <hifi> don't remember in which log sshd startup messages go, possibly "messages"
[4:46] * zomgbie (~jesus@h081217190090.dyn.cm.kabsi.at) Quit (Ping timeout: 246 seconds)
[4:46] <MachinaeWolf> well it wasn't in tail /var/log/messages
[4:46] <hifi> then it could be in auth.log where everything else goes
[4:47] <MachinaeWolf> nah
[4:48] <hifi> restart the ssh server and look into auth.log again
[4:50] <MachinaeWolf> k it says server listening on 0.0.0.0. port 22
[4:50] <MachinaeWolf> idk what pam_unix is but there's stuff about that as well
[4:50] <hifi> and you still can't ssh to localhost?
[4:51] <MachinaeWolf> negative
[4:51] <hifi> pam is important for user authentication
[4:51] <hifi> what messages did pam output?
[4:51] <MachinaeWolf> hmm well that says pam_unix(sudo:session): session opened for userspot by todd(uid=0)
[4:51] <hifi> nah, that's normal
[4:52] <hifi> ok, try 'ifconfig lo up'
[4:52] <MachinaeWolf> Keeps on complaining at my perfectly fine hostname when I run any sudo command though...
[4:52] <hifi> then ssh to localhost again
[4:52] <MachinaeWolf> k I'll try
[4:52] <hifi> is your hostname in /etc/hosts appended to the 127.0.0.1 line?
[4:52] <MachinaeWolf> let me see
[4:52] * os2mac2 (~jim.macdo@131-239-58-66.gci.net) has joined #raspbian
[4:53] <MachinaeWolf> nope
[4:53] <hifi> try adding it
[4:53] <MachinaeWolf> ok
[4:53] <hifi> it should stop complaining and it might fix your ssh
[4:54] <MachinaeWolf> no complaining when running sudo commands now :)
[4:54] <MachinaeWolf> still no go on ssh or sftp
[4:54] <MachinaeWolf> reboot maybe?
[4:56] <hifi> restart ssh
[4:56] <MachinaeWolf> nope
[4:58] <MachinaeWolf> pipes key on keyboard puts tilde :o that's not right
[4:58] <MachinaeWolf> ^ on the pi

[5:15] <MachinaeWolf> oh wait, hmm network went off for some reason on the pi
[5:16] <hifi> service networking start
[5:16] <hifi> IIRC
[5:17] <MachinaeWolf> hmm well my adapter isn't scanning anymore ?_?
[5:17] <MachinaeWolf> idk why
[5:19] <MachinaeWolf> keyboard layout isn't quite right, shift backslash doesn't do pipes key :/
[5:20] <MachinaeWolf> darn it idk what happened
[5:20] <MachinaeWolf> freaking wifi thing not doing, I originally had to manually install a firmware for it off usb
[5:21] <MachinaeWolf> oh that's not good lsusb doesn't see it O_O
[5:21] <MachinaeWolf> wtf?
[5:22] <MachinaeWolf> it did before
[5:22] <MachinaeWolf> oh there we go, unplugged it and it's back
[5:22] <MachinaeWolf> wonky thing...

[5:28] <MachinaeWolf> I heard there was a way to make it but you have to edit some config file?

[16:45] <Paul2> on restart I think it does? Maybe I'm wrong

[20:20] <reindeerflotilla> hi guys, I'm truing to get a bluetooth headset working with a raspberry pi running raspbian, full details are up here: http://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/questions/8582/setting-up-a-bluetooth-headset Basically I think I can connect to it, but can't figure out how to get it to appear as a sound card with aplay. Has anybody done this before?

[23:37] <poli> Hello all. If all I want is the lowest maintenance possible embedded raspbian install, is there some no-X no-extras image I could use?
[23:37] <BManojlovic> poli: you can create it by yourself
[23:38] <poli> BManojlovic: Can you refer me to some documentation on that?
[23:38] <BManojlovic> poli: if using debian based system use deboostrap or qdebootstrap
[23:38] <vagrantc> qdebootstrap?
[23:38] <poli> BManojlovic, vagrantc: thank you!
[23:39] <BManojlovic> qemu

[23:42] <poli> BManojlovic, vagrantc: thank you again
[23:42] <BManojlovic> poli: if you are using opensuse 64bit i can give you script which will prepare cross compiler
[23:43] <BManojlovic> still not "ported" to deb based systems...
