[3:05] <cads> Hey guys, some friends an I would like to put a web swerver on a raspberry pi, and I'd like to test the server before we have the pi.
[3:06] <cads> I'd like to use the Puppet config management system to handle the server configuration.
[3:07] <cads> Basically, I'd like to set up a mock debian environment in a virtual machine, set up the puppet provisioning code to handle the server deployment and configuration.
[3:08] <cads> The goal is to use the puppet code, with small modifications, to provision our raspberry pi
[3:10] <cads> I've looked at the existing work, and some people have done some puppet instrumentation of raspberry pi, namely yorrick and newloki: https://github.com/yorrick/puppet , https://github.com/newLoki/puppet-pi
[3:12] * \\Mr_C\\ (mrc@adsl-98-89-13-103.mgm.bellsouth.net) Quit ()
[3:14] <cads> The other day vagrantc suggested that we might be able to build our mock environment in a mainline debian VM
[3:16] <cads> my question has two parts - first, can we use debian to create an environment that acts like rasbian? Or will we find that the raspbian packages and configurations are very different and non-trivial to transfer over?
[3:17] * \\Mr_C\\ (mrc@adsl-98-89-9-203.mgm.bellsouth.net) has joined #raspbian
[3:18] <cads> the second part is whether anyone could share their experiences using puppet or other configuration management systems to control the raspbian os / the raspberry pi.
[3:26] * ReggieUK (ReggieUK@2.216.66.55) Quit ()
[3:32] <gnarface> cads: in answer to your first question: neither. you can actually install rasbpian on the VM, even if the VM is running on debian
[3:33] <gnarface> that should eliminate any cross-platform concerns that puppet doesn't
[3:35] <gnarface> i've got no answer to your second question though, sorry. for me, configuration management is a bloated, over-complicated middle-man between my systems and the 20-line bash script i'd still have to write anyway
[3:35] <cads> the first answer helps a lot!
[3:36] <cads> So we could outright install the raspbian environment in plain vanilla x86 debian?
[3:37] <gnarface> yes, the magic part is that you use the qemu for the vm, which can emulate the pi hardware (or something closely enough approximating it to be compatible with raspbian)
[3:39] * chiques (~chiques@pool-173-60-8-97.lsanca.fios.verizon.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 245 seconds)
[3:39] <gnarface> there should be qemu packages
[3:39] <gnarface> unfortunately i've not tried doing this myself
[3:39] <gnarface> but i know people in this channel have reported it works
[3:40] <cads> I do have a debian VM with a Raspbian Qemu environment in it
[3:41] <cads> which is a bit absurd and recursive :)
[3:42] * chiques (~chiques@pool-173-60-8-97.lsanca.fios.verizon.net) has joined #raspbian
[3:43] <cads> The reason I thought it might be nice to use a mocked up x86 environment is chiefly because I don't know about tools that can package Qemu images for easy deployment to my team
[3:43] <cads> I'll see if these exist, thanks for the idea!
[3:53] <gnarface> no problem, good luck

[15:22] <jerd> Hi
[15:23] <jerd> I have a problem with the Raspbian installer
[15:24] <jerd> After running the setup (I use an external usb drive for /, the boot partition is on the sd card) and rebooting the pi I get the following error message: "Unable to mount root fs on unknow-block(179 3)".
[15:25] <jerd> I searched around and there seem to be several causes that can happen. I'm not sure what to do now.
[15:25] <stephanb> jerd, are you sure that you can use a usb drive as root?
[15:26] <jerd> I think so
[15:26] <stephanb> one possibility might be, that the kernel doesn't support a usb root FS
[15:26] <jerd> I create a partition on the sd card called "rpiboot" and assign / to the usb drive
[15:26] <jerd> The site states that it's possible
[15:27] <stephanb> where did you assign it?
[15:27] <jerd> What?
[15:27] <stephanb> jerd, where did you assign the root
[15:27] <jerd> To the usb drive
[15:27] <stephanb> jens_, no, i mean, did you do it in the installer?
[15:28] <jerd> Yes
[15:28] <jerd> When I partition the space
[15:28] <stephanb> what does /etc/fstab say?
[15:29] <jerd> I can't get a prompt, so I'm not able to check
[15:29] <stephanb> doesnt matter anyway i guess, because /etc/fstab is on usb and you don't get to that
[15:30] <jerd> I think I'm gonna try to use the sd card only this time
[15:30] <stephanb> jerd, this should surely work
[15:30] <jerd> See it tha helps. If I still get that kernel panic, I think the sd card is to blame
[15:31] <jerd> I read that the pi can be picky with the sd cards
[15:31] <jerd> The reason I want to use an usb drive is that it is supposed to be faster
[15:32] <stephanb> jerd, yes thats true... most very cheap sdcards don't work properly
[15:32] <stephanb> jerd, http://c-mobberley.com/wordpress/index.php/2013/04/13/moving-raspberry-pi-root-folders-from-sd-card-to-usb-hdd/
[15:32] <stephanb> jens_, why dont you try this?
[15:32] <PhotoJim> the Pi is never going to be a speed burner on I/O but don't forget that the Ethernet is effectively on USB too (even if you use the internal Ethernet port) so that will interfere with disk bandwidth
[15:33] <jerd> Thanks, I will look into that article stephanb
[15:33] <jerd> True PhotoJim, I read that too, still wanna try it of course :>
[15:33] <stephanb> jerd, i will try moving to usb too... seems like this is a good way to minimise sdcard corruption
[15:34] <stephanb> PhotoJim, how many performance does this cost?
[15:34] <jerd> Yep, especialy with a database running on it
[15:34] <stephanb> PhotoJim, i mean, is this noticeable?
[15:35] <PhotoJim> jerd: absolutely, test it and see.
[15:35] <PhotoJim> stephanb: I've not formally tested it. the Pi can saturate Ethernet, but that's assuming cached data. if it's pulling CPU cycles to read USB disk data, not only is the CPU busier but the limited USB 2.0 bandwidth is in use for multiple purposes too.
[15:36] <PhotoJim> USB 2.0 is good theoretically to about 440 Mbps I think, but real world performance is more like half that. so if you are trying to push 100 Mbps of data, ignoring CPU load, that implies you could read it off disk at a little over 100 Mbps or about 12 MB/s.
[15:36] <stephanb> PhotoJim, meh... still better than to reformat the sdcard every two weeks because the filesystem got killed
[15:36] <PhotoJim> not sure you'd get full Ethernet bandwidth. it might read the data faster, and then push it out slower, but you get the gist.
[15:36] <PhotoJim> oh, if speed isn't the primary concern, nothing wrong with USB.
[15:37] <PhotoJim> but a UPS might be a good solution too. My Pis run for months without killing their SD cards.
[15:37] <stephanb> PhotoJim, what do you mean by UPS?
[15:37] <PhotoJim> I have a plug computer (SheevaPlug) on which I use USB as my primary storage. the EThernet isn't USB though.
[15:37] <PhotoJim> stephanb: uninterrupted power supply. Battery backup.
[15:38] <PhotoJim> i.e. if the power fails, the Pi lives.
[15:38] <stephanb> PhotoJim, ah, i know this as USV
[15:38] <stephanb> ;)
[15:38] <PhotoJim> stephanb: what language is that in?
[15:38] <stephanb> PhotoJim, german
[15:38] <PhotoJim> Ahh. :)
[15:38] <PhotoJim> I think the SD card quality is an issue too.
[15:39] <stephanb> PhotoJim, definitely
[15:39] <stephanb> PhotoJim, i just yesterday bought a card from the world known manufacturer "Formel 1"... i got a kernel panic when booting it the first time :P

[15:41] <harris> i got a email from mcm
[15:41] <harris> saying updated software
[15:42] <PhotoJim> if you upgrade the system, the Pi's software is just a package that gets updated also.
