[0:17] <CeilingKitten> @plugwash, how big does a mirror need to be ? are talking for distros? or the entire apt repo?
[0:18] <CeilingKitten> are we talking about distro or apt-repo mirros?
[0:18] <sney> "big" is usually not so much of a concern as "bandwidth"
[0:18] * PJimiPad (~pjimipad@mobile-198-228-234-033.mycingular.net) Quit (Client Quit)
[0:19] <CeilingKitten> well, O-o is there a way to donate? bandwidth?
[0:19] <sney> I know some efforts have been made in the past to combine apt and bittorrent somehow
[0:19] * nitdega_ (~nitdega@adsl-98-66-52-19.mem.bellsouth.net) Quit (Client Quit)
[0:19] <CeilingKitten> #ShareFEst is opening up a service that allows your HTTP files to be servered by the server as well as other downloaders, so they all share with each other as long as the browser window is open?
[0:20] <sney> but afaik mirror donations are usually solicited from entities with bw to spare, like universities, ISPs, and the like
[0:21] * nitdega (nitdega@2602:306:2423:4131:b8e4:99bc:a390:4656) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[0:22] <CeilingKitten> true, it does add up insanely fast 1mil + raspi users o-o across various distros =|
[0:22] <CeilingKitten> just wondering if there is little ways anyone can do to help =)
[0:23] <sney> file bug reports, submit patches, write documentation, there's always little things needing to be done in free software
[0:23] <plugwash> We have actually had a pretty good supply of mirror capacity from fairly early on and as the userbase has grown mirror capacity has probablly grown faster
[0:24] <plugwash> total declared bandwidth of our mirrors is massively higher than the ammount of traffic we send to them

[10:54] <foofoobar> Hi. I want to buy a usb stick so I can put films on it and play it on my raspberry
[10:54] <foofoobar> Does it need to have specific requirements so I can play the videos "lag free" ?

[11:15] <PieterPi> foofoobar, we watch movies (from a mounted network drive) wit omxplayer without any problems.. So USB should give you troubles. You might want to check the forum about the best specs..
[11:16] <foofoobar> PieterPi, is it USB2 or USB3 ?
[11:16] <PieterPi> foofoobar, USB should NOT give you troubles
[11:16] <PieterPi> Raspi has usb2
[11:16] <foofoobar> PieterPi, okay
[11:16] <foofoobar> Great, thank you ;)
[11:16] <PieterPi> Have fun!
[11:16] <foofoobar> I first tried to put my external HDD on the rasp
[11:16] <foofoobar> But it looks like the usb hub does not give enough power
[11:17] <foofoobar> because my HDD is "beeping" when I put it on the rasp usb hub
[11:17] <foofoobar> I also have a USB-Y cable so I can put a second power source to the HDD, but I'm a bit frightend if this makes any trouble because I will have it powered on 24/7
[11:17] <foofoobar> But when I think of .. the raspb is also powered with this adapter
[11:19] <PieterPi> you might want to keep the raspi and the hub powered separated
[11:20] * guysoft42 (~guysoft@77.126.176.143) has joined #raspbian
[11:21] <foofoobar> PieterPi, I'm currently powering my raspb with this adapter: http://www.amazon.de/Hama-00014095-USB-Ladeger%C3%A4t-Piccolino/dp/B001AYXQFQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1377428742&sr=8-3&keywords=usb+power
[11:21] <foofoobar> Is this okay to run it 24/7 with this?
[11:21] <foofoobar> Or should I consider switching to something like this: https://export.farnell.com/images/e14/content/common/rpi/products/2113629.jpg
[11:23] <foofoobar> Maybe I can buy a USB-Hub which has a power connection, then I can connect my HDD and my raspberry into this USB hub and then I only use one power source
[11:26] * nils_2_ (~nils_2@unaffiliated/nils-2/x-2480262) has joined #raspbian
[11:26] <PieterPi> I recommend a powered usb hub AND a separate raspberry Pi power supply

[11:33] <foofoobar> PieterPi, why?
[11:33] * nils_2_ is now known as nils_2
[11:34] <PieterPi> If you later decide to hook on some other thing to the GPIO's it might come in handy (like a piFace, Gertboard, leds etc etc)
[11:36] <foofoobar> PieterPi, I cant see the connection here
[11:36] <foofoobar> so the piFace also need external usb power so I can use the hub usb places for them?
[11:36] <foofoobar> Or what do you mean?
[11:40] <PieterPi> You might want to read: http://elinux.org/RPi_Hardware#Power
[11:42] * guysoft42 (~guysoft@77.126.176.143) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[11:43] <PieterPi> Anyway, this channel is about the raspbian operating system.. So you might want to ask it on #raspberrypi .. Will be watching there too :-)

[13:08] <gnarface> foofoobar: basically, your pi, from a dedicated power source, can reliably provide enough juice for maybe a keyboard and one usb flash stick. if you're lucky, maybe a wifi device instead of the keyboard. anything with moving parts or analog->digital conversion circuits is gonna need too much juice and needs its own dedicated power supply

[15:13] <mowgli19829> hi all! i have just started process of upgrading squeeze to wheezy (http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/release-notes/ch-upgrading.html). done all checks with aptitude etc as indicated, and got as far as the minimal upgrade. but now i got message "boot loader configuration check needed...". it was not recognized.
[15:14] <mowgli19829> it says i should check "the root device ID passed as kernel parameter" and "the boot device ID used to install and update the boot loader". i don't know how to identify devices with UUID or label. how should i do it, pls?

[15:15] <mowgli19829> (the boot device is, of course, a SScard on a RPi)
[15:16] <mowgli19829> sd, sorry
[15:17] * twolife is now known as twolife`
[15:18] <mowgli19829> besides that, after minimal update (but before reboot), i can't find any lilo or grub files in /boot or /etc. since i didn't touch any bootloader since original installation of squeeze, where do i find bootloader, pls?
[15:22] <mowgli19829> ???
[15:25] <sney> raspbian doesn't have a boot loader as debian understands it
[15:26] <sney> if you could pastebin the exact error messages you're getting as well as the command you ran that prompted them it'd be easier to help
[15:28] <sney> but basically you want to skip over that part somehow.
[15:28] <mowgli19829> i found possible answer at: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=53833, just can't see any GRUB files around... why??
[15:28] <sney> because there is no grub for the raspberry pi. it just loads the kernel directly with instructions from a text file
[15:29] <mowgli19829> the error msg is indicated in the last link. can i just reboot then?? i see that device IDs match between blkid and fstab match...
[15:30] <sney> yes, you should be able to reboot now
[15:32] <mowgli19829> ok, so i'll do full upgrade and then reboot. thanks!!

[16:55] <exoon> gnarface, omxplayer is working fine
[16:56] <gnarface> exoon: ok that suggests my theory is correct. you have to compile xmbc specially for raspbian sorry i'm not sure how but i know that someone around here has a link to instructions

[17:43] <paullik> Hi. _flake and gnarface thank you for your help several days ago (I'm the guy who wanted to run pi headless from the first start) I solved the problem by buying an HDMI cable and I discovered that the SD card was the culprit, soon after the boot process was started it gave some errors like "mmc0: waiting for hardware timeout"
[17:44] <paullik> I tried several options like upgrading firmware using hexxeh rpi-update and tring all sorts of distros for it, without success, until I finally tried some other SD card which now works
[17:44] <exoon> gnarface, its a question how I start the movie. If I press on them in the main screen, it plays. If I access over the menu theer is only sound. I guess a xbmc problem.

[18:25] <nuffigel> gnarface: hmm, oaky
[18:26] <gnarface> nuffigel: what cpan module?
[18:27] <nuffigel> well, so I wanted to install ddclient-3.8.1, which needs a Digest::DHA1 perl module. So I ran cpan and thought I should update CPAN.pm before starting with the SHA1 thing
[18:28] * kimitake_idle (~kimitake@107.200.10.147) Quit (Ping timeout: 245 seconds)
[18:28] <nuffigel> I did "install CPAN" and got the illegal instruction after some processing and downloading
[18:29] <nuffigel> ddclient tells me that there should be a package called "libdigest-sha1-perl" for debian, but it's apparently not in Raspbian (testing)
[18:29] <gnarface> nuffigel: ah you're running raspbian testing? that's another potential problem
[18:30] <nuffigel> (I pulled ddclient from Raspbian testing, since I need version 3.8.1)

[18:30] <gnarface> ah i see
[18:30] <gnarface> that's ... even worse
[18:30] <nuffigel> I just pulled ddclient :]
[18:30] <nuffigel> oh, is there a better way to get ddclient-3.8.1 ?
[18:31] <gnarface> definitely never mix versions
[18:31] <gnarface> its safer to find a backport, make a backport, or run testing (in that order of preference)
[18:31] <gnarface> but i've got to go and i can barely help you with that in real debian
[18:31] <nuffigel> hmm, okay, thanks so far anyways, gnarface
[18:31] <gnarface> nuffigel: good luck
[18:36] <nuffigel> meh, I don't think ddclient is the issue here. If I just could get my hands on the right package installing Digest::SHA1 for perl, I'd be fine (I think(
[18:43] <nuffigel> uh yeah, cpanminus did the trick: cpanm Digest::SHA1 like a charm and now ddclient works perfectly - even though versions got "mixed" \o/

[20:25] <Psil0Cybin> or is it up to me to delete and clean the logs as i desire?
[20:30] <gnarface> Psil0Cybin: some stuff can rotate logs on its own but most things cannot; you should install logrotate if its not already installed (it probably is though and you just need to make sure all your important programs have an entry in its config)
