[1:17] <Jeebiss> There we go
[1:17] <Jeebiss> Hey guys
[1:18] <Jeebiss> I had a quick question, im really new to the RasPi, and just installed Raspbian last night
[1:18] <Jeebiss> Why is it only a command line? I have seen others with full gui's.
[1:18] <Jeebiss> Am I missing a step?
[1:18] <sney> depends on how you installed it
[1:18] * joako (~joako@opensuse/member/joak0) Quit (Ping timeout: 246 seconds)
[1:19] <Jeebiss> i followed these instructions, http://www.raspbian.org/RaspbianInstaller
[1:20] <sney> oh, most of the screenshots you've probably seen are from pre-built images with the gui already set up
[1:20] <Jeebiss> Ahhh
[1:20] <Jeebiss> What would I need to do to set up a gui?
[1:20] <sney> to get the same desktop, it's 'apt-get install xorg lxde'
[1:20] <sney> though you won't automatically get the same mess of applications
[1:22] <Jeebiss> Do you have any suggestions for pre-built images?
[1:22] <sney> the "foundation" image from raspberrypi.org seems to be the most popular
[1:22] <Jeebiss> Ah, okay, ill look into that
[1:22] <Jeebiss> Thanks for the quick help :)

[9:46] <jrk_> Hello. I have two Raspberry Pi boxes. One on them have ca. 80% CPU utilization. Second is almost idle. They both need to share few files over Samba. What takes more CPU and RAM: mounting remote directory or exporting directory for remote hosts?

[12:18] <flo|va-nu-pied> twice
[12:18] <flo|va-nu-pied> what is strange is that it do the same problem with 2 differents raspberry and with 2 différents SD card
[12:19] <flo|va-nu-pied> i tried doing fsck against the sd card when the problem occur but it doesn't change anything

[12:34] <Lejoni> flo|va-nu-pied: it's as a bad idea to do that on the Pi as any normal PC
[12:34] <Lejoni> you will eventually get a corrupt filesystem
[12:34] <flo|va-nu-pied> yes i sawt that but doing an fsck doesn't find any error ?
[12:35] <flo|va-nu-pied> souldn't it find some corrupted data ?

[15:02] * Guest50932 is now known as duncann
[15:03] <sney> ok, what wifi and what issue?
[15:03] <duncann> the interface is up with eth0
[15:03] <duncann> but as soon as I unplugged the eth0 impossible to connect to wlan0 ip
[15:03] <sney> eth0 is your wired interface, not your wifi
[15:03] <duncann> thx I know how a linux works :)
[15:04] <sney> ok, then you're not being clear. how is eth0 related to your wifi problem?
[15:04] * cads (~m@adsl-74-160-16-161.asm.bellsouth.net) Quit (Read error: Operation timed out)
[15:04] <duncann> both seems to be connected
[15:04] <duncann> I have an ip for eth0 and wlan0
[15:04] <PhotoJim> same subnet?
[15:04] <duncann> yep
[15:05] <duncann> I guess I pass through eth0
[15:05] <duncann> iwconfig wlan0 | grep -i --color quality
[15:05] <PhotoJim> andyou're trying to access the wlan ip from another machine on the same subnet?
[15:05] <duncann> Quality 0 Signal 0
[15:05] <duncann> yes
[15:06] <duncann> my system is up to date, so my firmware
[15:06] <PhotoJim> ping -I whatever.your.wireless.ipis some.other.ip.onthesubnet from the Pi
[15:06] <PhotoJim> that will force the Pi to ping from its WiFi IP
[15:06] <PhotoJim> if that doesn't work, your WiFi isn't working right
[15:06] <PhotoJim> ping to a remote host, not the wired IP on your Pi
[15:06] <PhotoJim> the Pi is smart enough to know that's local and to not use networking
[15:07] <duncann> ok I will do that (wifi interface is not stable I need sometimes to reboot my raspberry twice before getting an ip for wlan0)
[15:07] <PhotoJim> so your WiFi is probably very marginal
[15:07] <PhotoJim> that's probably your problem
[15:08] <PhotoJim> wired is always preferable
[15:08] <duncann> not sure
[15:08] <duncann> my laptop also use it
[15:08] <PhotoJim> is your laptop precisely where your Pi is, using the same NIC? No. :)
[15:08] <duncann> and I tried to change the access point
[15:08] <PhotoJim> WiFi is variable.
[15:08] <sney> do you have your wifi dongle connected through a powered usb hub or is it getting power from the pi?
[15:08] <duncann> half meter :)
[15:09] <PhotoJim> it's also dependent on traffic from other devices, and interference from your neighbours.
[15:09] <duncann> from the pi
[15:09] <sney> that can also be an issue, depending on the power supply you use for your pi
[15:09] <PhotoJim> yes, that can also be an issue
[15:09] <sney> wifi does need power to transmit and receive, and the pi is a low power device itself
[15:10] <duncann> PhotoJim: ok I can't ping from my wlan0 interface
[15:11] <PhotoJim> so you don't have connectivity
[15:11] <duncann> even if I have a setup ip
[15:11] <duncann> yep
[15:11] <PhotoJim> did you assign the IP manually, or via DHCP?
[15:11] <duncann> on Internet I saw 2 kind of configuration
[15:11] <duncann> static
[15:11] <PhotoJim> oh, so you have no idea if you have a connection to the AP then
[15:11] * azeem (~mbanck@ppp-83-171-189-163.dynamic.mnet-online.de) Quit (Ping timeout: 268 seconds)
[15:11] <PhotoJim> having an IP alone means nothing
[15:11] <PhotoJim> so you don't, in fact, have a WiFi connection. Just an IP.
[15:12] <duncann> ok
[15:12] <duncann> so it's my wifi conf
[15:12] <PhotoJim> sort of akin to assigning an IP to your wired eth0 interface, but not plugging in an Ethernet cable.
[15:12] <PhotoJim> Well, it's at least that.
[15:12] <PhotoJim> that's a problem. there may be other problems.

[15:14] <PhotoJim> so I don't know
[15:14] <PhotoJim> WEP is easy, but it's also highly insecure

[15:18] <zombieman> what would i need to read the magnetic strip of florada id/driverliscenses to see how old they are?
[15:18] <duncann> sney: 12v 2a
[15:19] <sney> hmm, that should be enough to power the pi and the wifi
[15:19] <PhotoJim> you could also use wicd, seems a lightweight alternative to NetworkManager that might work well on the Pi
[15:19] <zombieman> WICD-CURSES is cool
[15:19] <sney> wicd has a curses interface so you don't need to have X running to manage it, yeah
[15:20] <sney> I'm not sure how "lightweight" it really is compared to n-m but everyone abuses that term anyway
[15:20] <duncann> I will tried it !
[15:21] <PhotoJim> that's true
[15:21] <zombieman> i want to make a device that lights up a green led if they scan there id and they are 18+ years old and a red if they are under 18 idk were to start
[15:21] <PhotoJim> and manual configuration is the lightest-weight of all
[15:22] <PhotoJim> zombieman: no punctuation, lots of spelling errors; that's hard to read without thinking hard.
[15:23] <zombieman> Sorry, I havent slept in a couple days.
[15:23] <sney> sounds like a magstrip reader or a bar code scanner, and 2 LEDs, and a few lines of code
[15:23] <PhotoJim> their ID... where to start :)
[15:23] <PhotoJim> and I don't know the answer I'm afraid
[15:23] <PhotoJim> a Pi channel may not be the best place to ask...
[15:23] <PhotoJim> it's not a problem specific to the Pi so there might be channels that are closer to the mark where you'd get better help
[15:24] <PhotoJim> (no, not sure what they might be)
[15:24] <zombieman> i was planning on useing a pi lol
[15:24] <sney> well, just break down the problem
[15:24] <duncann> "rfkill: Cannot open RFKILL control device" -> I got this when I launch wpa_supplicant manualy
[15:25] <zombieman> i know i need some kind of magnetic card scanner that can ether communicate with digital pins or usb
[15:25] <PhotoJim> zombieman: true, but it'd be the same problem if you planned to use a netbook or an old Pentium II :) ... google "linux magnetic strip reader" and see what you find.
[15:25] <sney> you need to a) determine how to read the ID card, b) find a peripheral that can read the ID card, c) write some code to parse the age/DOB out of the ID card...
[15:25] <sney> magnetic strip readers are available for linux, they present as a keyboard so there is no concern for driver support
[15:26] <PhotoJim> so you just get ASCII text, that'll make it simpler
[15:27] <sney> yep. as programming projects go this is not that advanced
[15:27] <sney> you could probably script most of it with bash

[16:07] <sney> the only time you'd have to worry about drivers is if it said it was windows only etc. the vast majority of point of sale hardware like card readers and barcode scanners are keyboards to the OS
[16:07] <zombieman> how does it format data as a keyboard? i thought it was going to be like a image capture and decode
[16:08] <gnarface> hmm
[16:08] <gnarface> maybe it does that all in hardware and just spits out the keycodes?
[16:08] <gnarface> (of the text stored in the magnetic strip)

[23:04] <gnarface> mlongo: do you have the firmware-atheros package installed?
[23:05] <mlongo> yep
[23:05] <gnarface> do you have network-manager installed? if you do, you may need to use that, it sorta blocks the normal network/interfaces i think
[23:05] <gnarface> i might be wrong but i think so
[23:05] <azeem> depends on the version AFAIK
[23:06] <mlongo> I don't have any network manager - I think -
[23:06] <azeem> newer version honor /etc/network/interfaces, certainly the one in wheezy
