[0:02] * dougl (~doug@S0106744401495b56.wp.shawcable.net) has joined #raspbian
[0:03] <karas_> would you say cross compiling is more easy?
[0:03] <shiftplusone> no, just quicker
[0:03] <karas_> ok
[0:09] * tfox (~tfox@199.21.149.182) has joined #raspbian
[0:20] * jgable (~jgable@205-178-5-230.c3-0.mart-ubr1.chi-mart.il.cable.rcn.com) has joined #raspbian
[0:24] * Eadrom (~Eadrom@ip24-251-189-81.ph.ph.cox.net) has joined #raspbian
[0:24] * tfox (~tfox@199.21.149.182) Quit (Quit: tfox)
[0:24] <piricel> what's new in raspbian?
[0:26] <shiftplusone> in what sense? O_o
[0:27] <piricel> updates/features
[0:27] * shiftplusone shrugs
[0:28] <karas_> shiftplusone: I get an error which says that /lib/modules/<kernel version>/build is not found when I try to compile them, I installed the kernel source package before of course
[0:29] <karas_> do you know what Im do wrong?
[0:29] <shiftplusone> karas_, nuh, it's one of those things where I'd have to poke around myself to figure out what's going on.
[0:30] <shiftplusone> but I am guessing you still haven't installed the kernel itself as the post-install instructions of the netinstall say?
[0:30] * petersaints (~quassel@a79-168-91-231.cpe.netcabo.pt) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[0:30] <karas_> no I did
[0:30] <shiftplusone> ah, good
[0:30] <karas_> Im now at 3.10-3-rpi
[0:31] <karas_> and I have at least some files in /lib/modules/3.10-3-rpi/ but really no folder "build"
[0:31] * jgable (~jgable@205-178-5-230.c3-0.mart-ubr1.chi-mart.il.cable.rcn.com) Quit (Quit: My MacBook Pro has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…)
[0:31] <shiftplusone> did you install the headers package or the source?
[0:32] <karas_> dont know, I did "apt-get linux-source"
[0:32] * Gooogy (~Gooogy@31-19-202-246-dynip.superkabel.de) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[0:34] * dougl (~doug@S0106744401495b56.wp.shawcable.net) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[0:34] <piricel> shiftplusone how is that browser?
[0:34] <shiftplusone> karas_, linux-headers-rpi-rpfv
[0:34] * petersaints (~quassel@a79-168-91-231.cpe.netcabo.pt) has joined #raspbian
[0:34] <shiftplusone> piricel, 'web'?
[0:34] <piricel> yes
[0:35] <piricel> is better than midori or netsurf?
[0:35] <shiftplusone> no idea, it's not included in the default image yet (though the repo to get it is, if you want to give it a go)
[0:35] <shiftplusone> I mostly run headless, so it doesn't really concern me.
[0:35] * dougl (~doug@S0106744401495b56.wp.shawcable.net) has joined #raspbian
[0:36] <shiftplusone> karas_, I have installed the package and I can clearly see /lib/modules/3.10-3-rpi/build
[0:37] <karas_> yes I installed linux-headers-rpi-rpfv and now I have it too, thank you
[0:38] * Eadrom (~Eadrom@ip24-251-189-81.ph.ph.cox.net) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[0:38] <shiftplusone> np

[0:38] * Eadrom (~Eadrom@ip24-251-189-81.ph.ph.cox.net) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[0:38] <karas_> I could compile my driver now, many many thanks :)

[0:39] * MrVector (~Vector@host86-159-90-63.range86-159.btcentralplus.com) Quit (Ping timeout: 260 seconds)
[0:42] * plugwash thought the repo for "web" had to be added extra even in the foundation images
[0:43] * tfox (~tfox@199.21.149.182) has joined #raspbian
[0:43] <plugwash> and note that said repo contains a LOT of updated versions of other packages which may cause some breakage
[0:43] <shiftplusone> plugwash, it's in sources.list.d
[0:44] <shiftplusone> root@raspberrypi:~# cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/collabora.list
[0:44] <shiftplusone> deb http://raspberrypi.collabora.com wheezy rpi
[0:44] <shiftplusone> (latest image)
[0:44] <shiftplusone> unless that's not the repo
[0:44] <plugwash> (well it's the repo but not the component)
[0:45] <shiftplusone> ah, correction noted then
[0:45] <plugwash> "deb http://raspberrypi.collabora.com wheezy web" is what you need to get it
[0:46] <shiftplusone> makes sense
[0:46] <plugwash> but like I said be aware that they updated quite a lot of stuff which may or may not break things (in particular some stuff seems to have issues with the new webkit)
[0:46] * dougl (~doug@S0106744401495b56.wp.shawcable.net) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[0:46] * shiftplusone wonders how it will work when it's ready for mainstream
[0:47] <shiftplusone> will you be hosting it or with those packages be removed from your repo or what?
[0:47] <shiftplusone> *will
[0:48] <plugwash> who knows
[0:48] * dougl (~doug@S0106744401495b56.wp.shawcable.net) has joined #raspbian
[0:49] * Eadrom (~Eadrom@ip24-251-189-81.ph.ph.cox.net) has joined #raspbian
[0:49] <plugwash> the root problem is that the rapid development of Pi related stuff is kinda at odds with the debian idea of a stable release........
[0:50] <shiftplusone> hmm
[0:50] * redsoup (~redsups@h-36-10.a336.priv.bahnhof.se) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[0:51] <shiftplusone> wonder what the foundation's plans are =/

[0:54] <plugwash> I suspect in the long term wheezy will be left behind (it has to be sooner or later anyway) and things will solidify on a jessie base
[0:55] <gnarface> i think that seems inevitable and even sane
[0:55] <gnarface> jessie is still pretty young in debian terms though
[0:55] <gnarface> by the end of this year however it probably will be less volatile
[0:57] * BManojlovic (~steki@opensuse/member/bmanojlovic) Quit (Quit: Ja odoh a vi sta 'ocete...)
[0:59] * tfox (~tfox@199.21.149.182) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[1:01] <shadfc> hey guys, i've got my wireless associating to my network on boot, but for some reason it isn't getting an ip via DHCP. If I run dhclient manually, it works fine. Any ideas on how to fix this?
[1:01] * tfox (~tfox@50-47-92-123.evrt.wa.frontiernet.net) has joined #raspbian
[1:02] <sney> shadfc: do you have 'iface wlan0 inet dhcp' in your interfaces file?
[1:02] <shiftplusone> You'd have to say what you did to get to where you are.
[1:03] * dougl (~doug@S0106744401495b56.wp.shawcable.net) has joined #raspbian
[1:03] <shadfc> sney: oh, i've got: iface wlan0 inet manual and then iface default inet dhcp
[1:04] <sney> that sounds... nonstandard
[1:04] <shadfc> the wlan0 uses the wpa-conf, and i thought i read somewhere that the "manual" was required so that wpa_supplicant to do somethign
[1:04] <shadfc> not sure
[1:05] * Fusing (~fusing@45.113.118.80.rev.sfr.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 276 seconds)
[1:05] <shadfc> been a long time since i messed with wireless stuff from CLI
[1:05] <sney> you can put the wpa settings in interfaces as well
[1:05] <sney> https://wiki.debian.org/WiFi/HowToUse this should be your manual

[5:40] <frank1e> hey guys
[5:40] <frank1e> Someone guided me how to get Irssi running on my Raspbian (RPi RevB). I forgot how to launch it via terminal. I remember something that had to do with "monitor" but forgot the rest
[5:40] <SirLagz> screen
[5:40] <SirLagz> you mean?
[5:40] <frank1e> I have Raspbian wheezy btw
[5:40] <frank1e> ah yes could be
[5:40] <SirLagz> run screen first to setup a session that you can detach from
[5:40] <SirLagz> then run irssi
[5:41] <SirLagz> to open irssi
[5:41] * hif1 is now known as hifi
[5:41] <frank1e> I just wanted to get it running again :) totally forgot everything. terminal for IRC is a bit complicated for me but I didnt find any irc client with a gui
[5:42] <SirLagz> xchat is an irc client with a gui
[5:42] <frank1e> oh okay cool
[5:42] <frank1e> that will be "sudo apt-get xchat" right?
[5:42] <SirLagz> sudo apt-get install xchat

[5:43] <SirLagz> no problems
[5:44] <frank1e> 33kb/s +_+
[5:44] <frank1e> on my 100mbit :/ dang
[5:45] <SirLagz> i wish i had 100mbit lol
[5:45] <SirLagz> i have 10...on a good day
[5:45] <frank1e> oh okay
[5:45] <SirLagz> normally around 7-8

[5:46] <frank1e> If I want to use my raspbian wheezy only for some private web browsing (reddit, news and stuff) and some financial transactions - im safer than doing it on my os x right? I mean, the chance of having my RPi infected is lower than on OS X or Win, right?
[5:46] <SirLagz> depends on how secure your windows setup is
[5:47] * po10 (~po10@c-178-73-197-136.anonymous.at.anonine.com) Quit (Ping timeout: 246 seconds)
[5:47] <frank1e> ah, my windows is just for mining and gaming. mac just for working with adobe applications.
[5:47] <frank1e> for everything else Id like to use my RPi
[5:47] <SirLagz> it'll all probably be about as secure as each other then. The more applications you have, the less secure a system is

[5:48] <frank1e> sure
[5:48] <frank1e> but I mean being "hijacked" with some malicious ad on some website.
[5:48] <SirLagz> the Pi might be a bit more secure, just because it's on an ARM CPU, so anything designed for x86 won't run

[6:49] <justlearner> hiii.... can anyone tell me how can i upgrade my raspbian version from an img file by using an older version raspbian to acces the img
[6:50] <justlearner> i am using a raspbian system..... i need to upgrade to new rasbian version
[6:50] <justlearner> !:i have only 1 sd card which is recognized.....
[6:50] <hifi> apt-get update && apt-get upgrade
[6:50] <hifi> or apt-get dist-upgrade
[6:51] <justlearner> no internet access to my pi
[6:51] <justlearner> i need to do it offline
[6:51] <hifi> can't really do it offline
[6:51] <justlearner> similar to windows 7 to windows8 upgrade i think while logged in win 7
[6:52] <hifi> you can, however, copy your data from the current installation outside and then write the image on the card and copy your data back in
[6:52] <justlearner> just qondering if its possible tht way
[6:52] * GHOSTnew (~GHOSTnew@gateway/tor-sasl/ghostnew) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[6:52] <hifi> but there's no direct "upgrade from image" method
[6:53] <justlearner> to write the image on the same card ??? i am already ruuning older version os
[6:53] <justlearner> i need to do wverything using 1 system
[6:53] <justlearner> which is running on raspi
[6:53] <justlearner> and 1 sd card
[6:54] <justlearner> so i want to try it like win 7 upgrade ....similar to tht concept
[6:54] <hifi> you can't
[6:54] <justlearner> constarints ..no internet...but have new img and pendrive access
[6:54] * bytecounter (~bytecount@dyndsl-085-016-025-236.ewe-ip-backbone.de) has joined #raspbian
[6:55] <hifi> the raspbian image is not an installer and does not contain any files to upgrade from
[6:55] <hifi> it's a pre-installed system
[6:55] <justlearner> hmmm
[6:55] <hifi> you can't upgrade from win7 to win8 using two hard drives where you have win8 installed on the other one
[6:55] <hifi> think it like that
[6:56] <justlearner> i have the new img file
[6:56] <hifi> it's a hard drive image, it's not an installer image
[6:56] <justlearner> hmm
[6:58] <justlearner> i guess ur right...thank you....it makes sense.....i think too its not possible
[6:58] <frank2e> Another question from the bloody newbie: My raspbian os has been setup a few months ago. I have no idea if the root(?) password is the preset one or not. How can I check it?
[6:59] <gordonDrogon> if you can sudo -i and get a root shell, its immaterial. just change it.
[6:59] <frank2e> wait what does sudo -i do
[6:59] <shiftplusone> 'man sudo'
[6:59] <gordonDrogon> ^
[7:00] <frank2e> Im new sry guys
[7:00] <shiftplusone> (spoiler: it opens a root login shell)
[7:00] <gordonDrogon> but now you know the 'man' command :)
[7:00] <frank2e> pi@raspberrypi ~ $ sudo -i
[7:00] <frank2e> root@raspberrypi:~#
[7:00] <frank2e> guess no pass is set
[7:00] <gordonDrogon> incorrect guess.
[7:00] <gordonDrogon> however now you can check and change.
[7:00] <frank2e> ahh tried man sudo
[7:00] <frank2e> dang thats much stuff coming up
[7:01] <gordonDrogon> fgrep root /etc/shadow
[7:01] <shiftplusone> the guess is correct, but not by correct deduction.
[7:01] <gordonDrogon> if it's a long line, then a password is set - change it. if it's a short line then it's likely not set.
[7:01] <frank2e> anyone of you got truecrypt running on raspbian?
[7:02] <frank2e> (found a precompiled version somewhere but no idea how to trust that source)
[7:02] <shiftplusone> frank2e, I used to hate manpages. They're long, and very hard to understand. Often you'll end up more confused after reading a manpage than you were before. But, that's an unfortunate side-effect of learning. Stick with it and you will see a common pattern to all manpages and will be able to find exactly the information you need while ignoring the rest.
[7:03] <justlearner> also....i have a microsd with sd adaptor...which i am able to access with card reader.....but if i try to use the same to plug in for booting on my pi....it doesnt read the microsd with adaptor.....i can access it though on a raspbian running on a different sd card
[7:03] <frank2e> shiftplusone okay, yes. much stuff to learn. hard times coming heh.
[7:03] <frank2e> gordonDrogon, fgrep root /etc/shadow ended with "Permission denied", so pass is set
[7:03] <frank2e> :)
[7:03] <shiftplusone> frank2e, stick with it, it pays off.
[7:04] <shiftplusone> frank2e, that's not what that means. Stop guessing based on what it SEEMS like the output is telling you. >_<
[7:04] <frank2e> okay okay okay
[7:04] <frank2e> :|
[7:05] * justlearner (42f950c3@gateway/web/freenode/ip.66.249.80.195) Quit (Quit: Page closed)
[7:05] <shiftplusone> frank2e, what it's saying is that the user you ran fgrep as does not have permissions to read that file. Which has nothing to do with wether or not the root password is set.
[7:05] <frank2e> oh okay
[7:07] <shiftplusone> frank2e, also, sudo asks for the USER password, NOT the root password. It also so happens that the Raspbian image you are using is set up so that the user pi is never asked for a password when running sudo. So whether you're asked for a password when running sudo -i also doesn't tell you anything about the root password.
[7:09] <frank2e> Okay
[7:09] <frank2e> im not a smart man
[7:09] <frank2e> ;D
[7:09] <gordonDrogon> start, and don't stop reading.
[7:09] <shiftplusone> it's ok, neither am I.
[7:10] <gordonDrogon> and you're never too old to learn something new.
[7:10] <frank2e> going to play around a bit more. months ago I knew some things, doing some stuff again and again until I remember everything forever :)

[7:10] <shiftplusone> >50? Lost track?
[7:11] <gordonDrogon> probably.

[23:00] <stevie86> Hey, is there any easy way how I could free up space on my sd card?
[23:01] <shiftplusone> uninstalling java is a good start

[23:03] <gnarface> it doesn't matter if its running

[23:16] <shiftplusone> pretty sure you can just remove oracle-java7-jdk and then clean the unnecessary dependencies automatically.
[23:17] <shiftplusone> and that's terrible
[23:17] <stevie86> yes
[23:17] <stevie86> what can I do?
[23:23] <shiftplusone> Well, I don't know what you did to get to that stage in the first place.

[23:26] <stevie86> how can I find the things that use up the most space?
[23:27] <shiftplusone> I use xdiskusage... but you can't install that. There's magic you can do with du, but it's not as useful.
[23:27] <Patina> stevie86: du -Sh --max-depth 1 for a start
[23:29] <stevie86> 19M ./.rpi-firmware

[23:31] <shiftplusone> yeah
[23:31] <Patina> Oh, it's the swapfile.
[23:31] <stevie86> what can I delete?
[23:34] <Patina> stevie86: Nevermind, using du like that is not usefull.
[23:36] <Patina> Try reading the manual, maybe you will figure something out.
[23:36] <stevie86> OK I found the things that used up my space.. should be fine now
[23:36] <stevie86> thanks
[23:36] <Patina> Ok, what was it?
