[0:01] * vagrantc (~vagrant@freegeek/vagrantc) Quit (Quit: leaving)
[0:07] * karvas (~innervisi@anon-36-100.vpn.ipredator.se) has joined #raspbian
[0:08] <karvas> hi - I have the following problem: I can only connect to my rpi on port 22 with ssh when I log in using a usb-keyboard first - this happens after each reboot. Any ideas?
[0:09] * dougl (~doug@S0106744401495b56.wp.shawcable.net) has joined #raspbian
[0:09] <karvas> this is since i applied some iptable rules, but they are not persistent - so i dont know whats going on
[0:14] <gnarface> karvas: can you ping it before login via keyboard?
[0:14] <karvas> yes I can
[0:14] <karvas> but using ssh it says "ssh: connect to host gateway port 22: Connection refused"
[0:14] <gnarface> weird
[0:15] <karvas> yes
[0:19] * pankid (~pan@c-98-250-146-121.hsd1.mi.comcast.net) has joined #raspbian
[0:20] <pankid> if I dd the raspbian image over to an sd card, will I be able to ssh in to set everything up, or do I need to attach my pi to a monitor?
[0:22] <MisterL> if everything works fine you should be able to log on via ssh
[0:23] <pankid> ok
[0:23] <pankid> what about imaging over to a fat partition?
[0:23] <pankid> will dd overwrite the partition type to ext4?
[0:23] <MisterL> dd will write the exact image to the sd card. so.. yes
[0:24] <MisterL> it will create a fat16 boot partition and an ext4 partition containing debian
[0:24] <MisterL> raspbian even
[0:25] * pankid (~pan@c-98-250-146-121.hsd1.mi.comcast.net) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[0:27] <karvas> I have two interfaces eth0 and eth1, but I have only eth0 connected when I boot the rpi - could it be possible that sshd waits for the second interface to come up?
[0:27] * pankid (~pan@c-98-250-146-121.hsd1.mi.comcast.net) has joined #raspbian
[0:28] <karvas> the thing is, when I connect a monitor and keyboard, I log in and then I have to log in again before Im in. any idea what Im dealing with?
[0:30] <MisterL> yeah
[0:30] <MisterL> if eht0 and eht1 are connected to the same network
[0:30] * pankid (~pan@c-98-250-146-121.hsd1.mi.comcast.net) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[0:31] <MisterL> if so they'll get different ips, so maybe the ipfilterrules don't match?
[0:31] <karvas> no I dont think so, I dont even have eth1 connected
[0:31] <MisterL> hmm
[0:31] <karvas> and I dont have rules at the moment...
[0:32] <karvas> I just did it again: I only need to press enter and ssh works :X
[0:32] <MisterL> do you use a wifi connection=
[0:32] <MisterL> ?
[0:32] <karvas> yes but I have an wifi adapter
[0:33] <karvas> but i also tried with a cable, it was the same thing
[0:33] <MisterL> does it happen when you use.. oh ok
[0:33] <karvas> on the monitor, the login appears while it still starts openvpn
[0:33] <karvas> I think openvpn interrupts the bootup?
[0:33] <MisterL> are there any other firewallrules effective? (eg sshguard)
[0:34] * tfox (~tfox@cpe-199.21.149.243.ca.yorkinet.com) Quit (Quit: tfox)
[0:34] <karvas> no I didnt install anything but iptables and openvpn
[0:35] <karvas> when I press enter it says openvpn failed to connect and then I get my login screen on the monitor
[0:35] <karvas> and then I can also log in via ssh

[0:37] <MisterL> netstat -l | grep ssh
[0:37] <MisterL> ?
[0:38] <karvas> tcp 0 0 *:ssh *:* LISTEN
[0:38] <karvas> tcp6 0 0 [::]:ssh [::]:* LISTEN
[0:38] <MisterL> strabge
[0:38] <MisterL> strange
[0:39] <MisterL> did you try to disable ovpn to check if the error persists?
[0:40] <karvas> I could try to disable the autostart for openvpn
[0:42] <MisterL> i'd give it a try
[0:42] <MisterL> maybe backup the sd in case you can't access it anymore

[23:03] <zoey> Does anyone have any idea why I can't get SSH to start at boot ?
[23:07] <plugwash_> hmm, I thought at least iceweasel had supported socks for years
[23:08] <plugwash_> though iceweasel on the Pi can be a bit slow to say the least
[23:09] <gnarface> plugwash_: i'm pretty sure it does too but the way they keep nonsensically re-arranging the menus with every release, i wouldn't blame anyone for not being able to find it
[23:09] <gnarface> zoey: you're talking about openssh-server right? it should start on boot by default unless there's no network device up....
[23:09] <zoey> oh. that may be.

[23:13] <zoey> maybe
[23:13] <zoey> I'm checking
[23:13] <gnarface> sometimes the handshake takes a bit longer than you'd expect compared to a modern desktop pc. the pi is slow
[23:14] <zoey> I'm just dumb.

[23:16] <zoey> Meant the former

[23:30] <gnarface> on compiling VLC for the pi with hardware acceleration... was the reason its not done already that the wheezy version of VLC doesn't contain the --enable-rpi-omxil config option? or could i "apt-get src vlc" and just add that flag and rebuild the package cleanly?
[23:30] <gnarface> "apt-get source vlc && apt-get build-dep vlc" i guess, really...
[23:30] <zoey> that thing is going to be crazy slow LOL
[23:30] <gnarface> zoey: yea, i know but people do it
[23:31] <gnarface> zoey: you know what's slower? wanting to play a DVD and realizing omxplayer can't so you have to manually concatenate the VOB files on your SD card
[23:32] <zoey> lol.
[23:32] <zoey> I was challenged to install gentoo from source.
[23:33] <gnarface> that would be funny
[23:33] <gnarface> i am curious how many weeks it'd take
[23:34] <gnarface> seems like it would be more useful as art though
[23:34] <gnarface> (assuming you wanted to decorate with a constantly-compiling gentoo boostrap)
[23:34] <zoey> .... I should do that
[23:35] <zoey> Can I have colors on emerge?

[23:36] <gnarface> heh, good question...
[23:37] <zoey> I actually keep random code compiling on my monitors when I go to sleep
[23:38] <roast_> janPasi: on it already... was trying to be fair to your response. no chrome for ARM, but chormium is available
[23:40] <plugwash_> gnarface, the reason it's not done already is because so-far noone has done the research and come up with a sane soloution that avoids packages in raspbian main depending on Pi specific libraries
[23:42] <plugwash_> what does that flag do? does it just add plugins or does it make changes to the core of vlc?
[23:43] <gnarface> plugwash_: i *think* it must just add a plugin, because to use the hardware acceleration reportedly you have to execute it as "vlc --vout omxil_vout"
[23:46] <plugwash_> Yeah, i'd really like to have confirmation of that before I start working on packaging though
[23:46] <plugwash_> if it just adds a plugin it should be possible to build the plugin from a seperate source package, it may mean rebuilding vlc and throwing most of it away but that isn't really a problem
[23:47] * plugwash_ looks up how long vlc takes to build anyway

[23:48] <gnarface> well, all i can confirm is that i just found a comment attached to the tutorial that claims the "--enable-rpi-omxil" option is NOT present in the version of the source package currently in raspbian
[23:50] <plugwash_> yeah, having said that people who write tutorials often assume that the only version of raspbian that exists is wheezy
[23:50] <gnarface> ah, good point
[23:51] <gnarface> well, here's the tutorial: http://intensecode.blogspot.com/2013/10/tutorial-vlc-with-hardware-acceleration.html
[23:51] <gnarface> in case it helps and you didn't know where it was
[23:51] <gnarface> there also seems to be useful information in the parent thread here: http://www.raspberrypi.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=58709
[23:52] <gnarface> the tutorial was updated with a list of required *-dev lib packages someone mentioned in the latter link, but i can't tell you whether any of those constitute what you mean by "pi-specific" libraries
