[10:00] <ppq> shiftplusone, hi! some weeks ago you mentioned a tool to modify raspbian images, install packages inside etc. without having to flash it to a pi. what was that again, please? i think it was something more "specialized" than just qemu
[10:01] * yosuke (~yosuke@i223-218-33-209.s41.a012.ap.plala.or.jp) has joined #raspbian
[10:02] <shiftplusone> ppq, there are all sorts of tools, but I find that they complicate things. I was most likely talking about a qemu-user chroot.

[10:05] <Kymru> which usb wifi dongle does Raspbian have drivers built in for?
[10:05] <shiftplusone> I don't think it's reasonable to list them
[10:05] <zGrr> Huawei E3131

[10:06] <shiftplusone> the one people most often have trouble with is the 8188eu (if I recall the chipset correctly)
[10:06] <shiftplusone> since that one requires manual fiddling with the driver
[10:08] <zGrr> I think, all of them do need some soft of fiddling with.
[10:09] <Kymru> ok, i bought 2 TP-LINK TL-WN725N V2 before xmas and had to install the drivers and they are 8188eu, i dont mind fiddling
[10:09] <Tachyon`> does not network manager just see dongles these days?
[10:09] <shiftplusone> not so much on the foundation's raspbian install. Aside from having a lot preinstalled, there's also wpa_gui and a preconfigures network interfaces file, which makes it pretty straight forward.
[10:09] <shiftplusone> Tachyon`, not if the drivers are missing.
[10:10] <Tachyon`> ah, well, no, I suppose not, mine just pop up as 1-3 serial ports
[10:10] <zGrr> Network manager might not be enough. Some of them still need modesetting.
[10:10] <shiftplusone> but even if drivers are missing, they're usually an apt-get away (which may be tricky without a network connection)
[10:11] <Tachyon`> the toughbooks I acquired recently have built in GSM/Edge modems (IE: Pre 3G and a max of dialup speed)
[10:12] <Tachyon`> although lsusb says those are a USB device so perhaps they could be replaced with something less stone age
[10:12] <Tachyon`> I've not had the toughbooks apart, as the name suggests it's not so easy
[10:14] <Tachyon`> http://kupo.be/pics/transformer.jpg <- curious beasts, must be one of the first machines of that type
[10:15] <Kymru> ok well for the TP-LINK TL-WN725N V2 i just found an automatic download and install script based on kernal build
[10:19] <zGrr> I only couldn't get E3131 working with OpenELEC
[10:25] <shiftplusone> ppq, did you figure it out?
[10:26] <ppq> shiftplusone, sorry, forgot to respond. i'm going to use qemu, thanks :)
[10:27] * m0rd0 (~mordo@51.131.208.46.dyn.plus.net) has joined #raspbian
[10:28] <shiftplusone> the advantage of chrooting is that the image remains un-booted, and it's a bit faster than qemu-system. So it's preferable if you're going to release an image publicly.

[10:46] <m_r_r> Hello
[10:46] <jammy_> i install only gstreamer package
[10:47] <gnarface> jammy_: you will also need libomxil. without it the pi is not fast enough to play video
[10:47] <m_r_r> I'm going to install Raspbian on a Raspberry Pi. Can I do that through SSH, or do I need a keyboard and a monitor ?
[10:47] <gnarface> m_r_r: this works with ssh https://github.com/hifi/raspbian-ua-netinst
[10:48] <m_r_r> gnarface: nice, it's just what i needed, thanks :-)
[10:49] <gnarface> np, but hifi is the one you should thank
[10:49] <gnarface> he did the work
[10:50] <jammy_> after install gstreamer i want to install that packages
[10:51] <jammy_> sudo apt-get install libomxil-bellagio-dev
[10:51] * m_r_r (863b1772@gateway/web/freenode/ip.134.59.23.114) Quit (Quit: Page closed)
[10:52] <gnarface> jammy_: i think so but i am not sure. try this: apt-cache search ^libomxil
[10:53] <jammy_> because after compilation i didnt get any video on the board
[10:53] <gnarface> well, try a much smaller video
[10:53] <jammy_> from that uri
[10:54] <gnarface> jammy_: if you try a video that is a very small resolution like 160x120 it might work
[10:55] <gnarface> jammy_: it is common for video players on the pi that do not use libomxil to just show a black frame because they are too slow, but resolution matters
[10:55] <gnarface> jammy_: you did not get any errors, i assume?
[10:56] <jammy_> i didnt get any errors
[10:56] <jammy_> just i compied and complied
[10:56] <jammy_> http://docs.gstreamer.com/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=327735
[10:57] <jammy_> this example
[10:59] <gnarface> jammy_: yes, my diagnosis then is that you need to add libomxil support to your app
[10:59] <jammy_> k
[11:00] <jammy_> now i will installing that packages
[11:00] <gnarface> jammy_: that is a good place to start. you might also want to install libomxil-bellagio-doc
[11:01] <gnarface> jammy_: (it contains documentation)

[11:54] <ppq> Edy81, you can have several operating systems on one sd-card or one os per sd-card and just switch cards
[11:54] <Kymru> raspbian doesnt boot to x11
[11:54] <Edy81> ok so as i said it can be done with one os per one SD ?

[11:57] <Edy81> i used the xbmc on mac once
[11:57] <Kymru> i mean they dont boot to terminal

[17:38] <Odie_> I wonder if this is still the same issue as with computers
[17:38] <Odie_> screens by default dont show all pixels on hdmi
[17:39] <Odie_> to do that, you need to put the display's port to PC mode
[17:39] <ftzdomino> oh, you need a native resolution?
[17:39] <ftzdomino> plus you have to turn off overscan
[17:39] <Odie_> I never had to do that on pc's

[17:43] <ftzdomino> it's a tv? you probably want to set your raspberry pi to 1080p, 1080i, 780p, or similar
[17:45] <Edy81> can't do nothing no options

[17:49] <ftzdomino> i can't say i've ever booted a raspberry pi to x11, but i'm assuming there are settings tools to change the resolution in a control panel
[17:50] <Jusii> X11 goes to same resolution pi booted in
[17:50] <Edy81> my one went to xmbc like mad and then i reboot and found i had 2 options both with x11
[17:50] <Jusii> Edy81: disable overscan
[17:50] <Edy81> i try
[17:51] <Edy81> i only have auto scart not sure why
[17:51] <Jusii> tvservice -s prints your current resolution
[17:52] <Edy81> not option
[17:52] <Edy81> ok i try in new tab
[17:53] <Edy81> state 0x120016 [DVI DMT (39) RGB full 16:9], 1360x768 @ 60Hz, progressive
[17:54] <Edy81> on ps3 minecraft demo and browser fonts look same as here
[17:54] <Jusii> tvservice -m DMT will tell you all resolutions supported
[17:55] <Edy81> 6 modes
[17:55] <Edy81> mode 4: 640x480 @ 60Hz 4:3, clock:25MHz progressive
[17:55] <Edy81> mode 9: 800x600 @ 60Hz 4:3, clock:40MHz progressive

[18:00] <Edy81> oh are this imagens in SD like virtual linux so we need to expand them?
[18:01] <Edy81> what is mode 85?
[18:01] <ftzdomino> it looks like a standard 720p tv resolution
[18:02] <Edy81> and how i set it ?
[18:04] <Edy81> tvservice is not a linux coman but something in my tv?
