[3:12] <OCpier> hi
[3:13] <plugwash> hi
[3:15] <OCpier> I found a way to put a flash player on r-pi
[3:16] <shiftplusone> gnash?
[3:18] <OCpier> http://www.raspberrypi.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=72521
[3:18] * Megaf (~Megaf@unaffiliated/megaf) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[3:18] <OCpier> not gnash
[3:19] <OCpier> minimal kiosk browser 1.4 with a few settings changes will play flash video/audio and streaming audio
[3:20] <OCpier> I've been watching http://southparkstudios.com on my pi today

[3:21] <shiftplusone> Ah, that has nothing to do with flash
[3:21] <shiftplusone> it finds the stream and opens it with omxplayer. Such hacks have been around for a while.
[3:21] <OCpier> streaming http://twit.am/listen right now
[3:21] <shiftplusone> (but it's always good to see another one)
[3:22] <OCpier> it's the best I've found so far
[3:23] <OCpier> it plays flash, so technically it's a flash player
[3:24] <shiftplusone> flash.... isn't a video stream. O_o
[3:24] <OCpier> it plays video streams
[3:25] <OCpier> i know what you're saying though
[3:28] <OCpier> i don't know what setting to change to play streaming flash radio stations though
[3:29] <OCpier> one I want to play is at http://player.tritonmedia.com/entercom/KNRKFM

[7:05] <betz0r> i recently installed raspbian via raspbian-ua-netinst (guide on github) and updated the raspberry pi firmware (executed all commands recommended). after reboot my wlan usb stick is recognized but "iw wlan0 info" says: "nl80211 not found" - https://wiki.debian.org/rtl819x#rtl8192cu my stick is supported since 2.6.x. any advice?
[7:05] <betz0r> ifconfig doesn't list wlan0
[7:05] <zGrr> moin :)
[7:05] <betz0r> hi :)
[7:06] <betz0r> lsusb Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0bda:8178 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8192CU 802.11n WLAN Adapter
[7:07] <betz0r> syslog says: usbcore: registered new interface driver rtl8192cu
[7:08] <hifi> betz0r: does it need any firmware packages?
[7:08] <hifi> probably the firmware package from non-free repository
[7:09] <betz0r> hifi, hi, i don't. i searched the interwebz, but no solution regarding any differentz firmware version was posted
[7:09] <betz0r> i tried firmware-realtek which i found on debian wiki, but this package seems not available on rasp
[7:09] <hifi> you need to enable non-free
[7:09] <betz0r> ill try that nonfree package
[7:10] <betz0r> firmware-nonfree isnt available too
[7:10] <hifi> you need to add non-free to /etc/apt/sources.list
[7:10] <hifi> and then do apt-get update
[7:10] <betz0r> ah its firmware-linux-nonfree :)
[7:10] <betz0r> oh
[7:10] <hifi> if non-free wasn't there already
[7:12] <betz0r> deb http://mirrordirector.raspbian.org/raspbian wheezy main firmware ------> deb http://mirrordirector.raspbian.org/raspbian wheezy main firmware-nonfree
[7:12] <hifi> just non-free
[7:12] <hifi> "wheezy main non-free"
[7:12] <betz0r> space non-free
[7:12] <betz0r> firmware was already there
[7:12] <hifi> that's raspbian specific repository, keep it there, unrelated to your wifi
[7:15] <betz0r> alright, installing firmware-linux-nonfree and rebooting, thx for your advice
[7:16] <hifi> you probably want firmware-realtek
[7:17] <betz0r> damn.
[7:17] <hifi> https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/firmware-realtek according to that it has your firmware
[7:17] <hifi> it's till in the non-free repository anyway
[7:17] <betz0r> installing right now, rebooting again
[7:17] <betz0r> :)
[7:18] <betz0r> when initramfstools rebuilds, an error about an wrong hardlink disappears: ln: Harte Verknpfung /boot/initrd.img-3.10-3-rpi.dpkg-bak => /boot/initrd.img-3.10-3-rpi konnte nicht angelegt werden: Die Operation ist nicht erlaubt
[7:18] <hifi> it's normal
[7:18] <betz0r> ok thx
[7:20] <betz0r> 8192cu kernel module is now loaded, but same error appears: nl80211 not found
[7:21] <betz0r> and "iwconfig" is missing but "iw" is installed
[7:21] <hifi> some other package provides iwconfig
[7:21] <betz0r> also iwlist
[7:21] <betz0r> ok
[7:21] <betz0r> wireless-tools
[7:21] <hifi> wireless-tools is the name of it
[7:24] <betz0r> thx so far, hifi !

[7:29] <supermike> Both iwlist and spa_gui are unable to scan for wireless networks. It worked once right out of the box, but after attempting to connect to an AP (mistyped the PSK) it refuses to do anything. Tried adapter directly off the Pi and on a quality hub, hard reboots, etc. Any ideas?
[7:31] <betz0r> i got the usual problem with raspbian firmware... eth0 established, booted up, wlan0 gets established, ifdown eth0, wlan0 doesnt work too. in the end i guess wlan0 is internally routed to eth0
[7:33] <betz0r> any existing connection is working but i cant establish new ones. how is this possible?

[7:46] <betz0r> supermike, yes it says eth0 is default
[7:48] <supermike> betz0r: is your ethernet and wireless the same network?
[7:49] <betz0r> supermike, yes
[7:49] <betz0r> i want to use wlan only
[7:49] <supermike> betz0r: so it is confused that your router is reachable by both interfaces, and you took down the one it prefers.
[7:50] <supermike> if you 'ifdown wlan0 ; ifup wlan0' it might fix it
[7:50] <betz0r> ok i'll try unpluging the cable and an ifdown/ifup wlan0 in rc.local
[7:50] <astrapotro> or you can do: sudo route del default gw "your eth0 ip address"
[7:50] <betz0r> with ifdown eth0 the default is removed too
[7:51] <astrapotro> and then: sudo route add default gw "your wlan0 gateway address"
[7:51] <betz0r> the system needs the default value set?
[7:52] * eaj (~eaj@cpc3-woki7-2-0-cust177.6-2.cable.virginm.net) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[7:52] <betz0r> i mean, as soon as eth0 is removed, the default is gone anyways and wlan0 should be used as the only possible route

[17:45] <gnarface> rahul__: probably you need to do that, at least
[17:45] <rahul__> gnarface: HOw to do that?
[17:46] <gnarface> rahul__: open alsamixer, hit the tab key once, examine the capture controls... i can't give you more specifics unless you post a screenshot
[17:46] <rahul__> gnarface: ok
[17:46] <rahul__> gnarface: cannot open mixer: No such file or directory
[17:46] <rahul__> i wrote alsamixer it is giving me erroe

[17:49] <rahul__> gnarface: how to use alsamixer with out it
[17:49] <rahul__> ?
[17:49] <rahul__> I am not using any parameters with command: alsamixer

[19:38] <emo> hello, I would like to buy raspberry pi and want to use XBMC on it...
[19:38] <emo> How this is working on it? xbmc need quite good CPU power... thx
[19:39] <sney> there are a few specialized xbmc distros for the raspberry pi
[19:39] <gnarface> emo: xbmc reportedly works fine if you compile it specially for the pi's video hardware. some distros, as sney mentions, do this for you. raspbian (ironically perhaps) does not
[19:39] <sney> the ones I know of are xbian, raspbmc and openelec.
[19:39] * jgable (~jgable@208.185.170.2) has joined #raspbian
[19:40] <sney> yeah, raspbian tries not to deviate from debian except where necessary
[19:40] <emo> ok thx you
[19:41] * killer_prince (~killer_pr@122.171.69.0) Quit (Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
[19:41] <gnarface> emo: openelec comes very highly recommended but if you want to do it the hard way here are some instructions for compiling xbmc specially on raspbian: http://www.raspbian.org/RaspbianXBMC (dunno how up to date they are)
[19:43] <Defiant> There exists a repo with precompiled xbmc binaries for raspbian
[19:43] <gnarface> there are probably a few actually
[19:44] <gnarface> if you're not paranoid that's always a fine choice...

[19:50] <Defiant> its just sad, that the raspbian people won't fix their packages, like xbmc or vlc
[19:50] * meti (~meti@unaffiliated/meti) has joined #raspbian
[19:50] <sney> there's really only one raspbian "people" and he's said on a few occasions that he doesn't want to have a lot of special deviations from debian
[19:50] <paultag> perhaps you'd like to contribute
[19:50] <sney> also that
[19:51] <Defiant> like how?
[19:51] <paultag> like patch the packaging to work, if it's not?
[19:51] <paultag> apt-get source xbmc
[19:51] <Defiant> tried that with gstreamer packages, no one is interested
[19:51] <paultag> you can email the debdiff over
[19:52] <paultag> (not to me, I'm just here to troll the raspbian community, but I'm sure plugwash knows all about how they accept patches)
[19:52] <paultag> also perhaps fix it in Debian upstream
[19:52] <paultag> since it'd be nice for everyone to win
[19:52] <gnarface> Defiant: i know that for example with regards to vlc, it requires versions of several things not in wheezy, so... mabye better luck for jessie when its out
[19:53] <gnarface> i can understand plugwash not wanting to deviate from the versions of things in debian wheezy
[19:53] <Defiant> paultag: debian upstream won't work since the pi needs special versions of files which break on other systems, like egl stuff
[19:53] <gnarface> that would quickly become a maintenance nightmare
[19:54] <paultag> gnarface: there are some things that are needed if the patches trigger ftbfs on armel or armhf
[19:54] <paultag> Defiant: ¯\(°_o)/¯; all I know is patches solve everyone's problems
[19:56] <Defiant> lol, srsly the graphics stuff needs to be compiled against the special pi versions, debian will never do that
[19:56] <paultag> I'm aware of Debian's behavior :)
[19:56] <paultag> seeing as how I'm a DD but nowhere close to a Raspbian contributor
[19:57] <gnarface> paultag: ftbfs? i'm not familiar with that term
[19:57] <paultag> failure to build from source, gnarface
[19:57] <gnarface> ah
[19:58] * tucow (tucow@178.254.9.246) has joined #raspbian
[19:58] <plugwash> It's not so much that I won't accept patches as that people get scared away when I start specifying requirements for said patches
[19:59] <plugwash> In particular that the stuff that depends on Pi specific libraries has to be built from seperate source packages to the generic stuff
[20:00] * mpmc is now known as mpmc[BNC4FREE]
[20:00] <paultag> sounds fine to me
[20:05] <Defiant> So you would like to split gstreamer/vlc/xbmc packages into pi specific parts?
[20:07] <plugwash> Not sure about xbmc but for something like gstreamer or vlc what I'd like to see is a new source package that built the Pi specific plugins in a way that they could be used with the existing (or possiblly updated but still generic in the case of wheezy since i'm not sure the versions in wheezy are new enough) vlc/gstreamer packages

[22:01] <[SkG]> I was thinking about patching rpi-update to use curl instead of wget

[22:03] <gnarface> [SkG]: according to this, its already been backported: http://metadata.ftp-master.debian.org/changelogs//main/w/wget/wget_1.13.4-3+deb7u1_changelog

[22:04] <[SkG]> that.
