[4:34] <BHSPiMonkey> Hi all. I have nfs set up on my pi, but for some reason it mounting it (from another machine) always takes ages and usually times out on the first try
[4:37] <BHSPiMonkey> Tried it just now from Arch (same network, all wired ethernet), mount took about 12 seconds
[4:38] <BHSPiMonkey> I can establish an SCP/SFTP connection in just a second or two by comparison
[4:41] * rofl (55b58754@gateway/web/freenode/ip.85.181.135.84) has joined #raspbian
[4:44] <gnarface> BHSPiMonkey: just out of curiosity, is the "another machine" you're using to mount the nfs volume on the pi that is not Arch running mac os X?
[4:54] <BHSPiMonkey> gnarface: no, I've connected from Arch and Ubuntu
[4:54] * mythos (~mythos@unaffiliated/mythos) Quit (Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
[5:16] <Jusii> BHSPiMonkey: is there difference if you're using nfs3 or nfs4
[5:16] <Jusii> had something similar recently (not pi related) but nfs4 took a lot longer, nfs3 was instant
[5:19] <BHSPiMonkey> Jusii: I adopted the same fix, same outcome
[5:19] <BHSPiMonkey> added vers=3,nolock to mount options
[5:20] <BHSPiMonkey> (the alternative was apparently to stick with v4 and run an additional daemon on all my clients)
[5:22] * phunker (~devil@93-50-163-37.ip153.fastwebnet.it) Quit (Quit: Konversation terminated!)
[5:25] <gnarface> BHSPiMonkey: did you come up with a working solution? if everything is ntfsv4 there may be some important non-default tuning options depending on the volume of entries in the mounted directory
[5:26] <gnarface> BHSPiMonkey: i seem to recall a while back someone having a similar problem and finding that the pi just was too low speed on the I/O end to keep up with the defaults, and the fix was to turn the read and write cache values (especially read, though i forget the actual names) up to the max value of 32... KB or MB or whatever it was
[5:26] <BHSPiMonkey> gnarface: sorry, my wording was ambiguous; I came up with the same solution as Jusii and it works.
[5:27] <gnarface> BHSPiMonkey: oh, yea locking everything to version 3 should also work, but from my recollection was only actually necessary if you were using OS X in the mix due to some crippled implementation of nfs apple is still using
[5:27] <BHSPiMonkey> The problem is that nfs4 wants some rpc-gss daemon to be running on the client, and there's a 15 second timeout when it tries to connect while it's not there
[5:27] * lupinedk is now known as Lupinedk
[5:27] <BHSPiMonkey> The only way to make that timeout not occur is to mount using nfs3 or provide the daemon
[5:28] <gnarface> hmm... that may be the case but i really think the cache value on the server side would have the same effect... one sec while i try to dig up the settings
[5:28] * rofl (55b58754@gateway/web/freenode/ip.85.181.135.84) Quit (Quit: Page closed)
[5:29] <BHSPiMonkey> gnarface: well the slow mounts are specifically a function of that rpc timeout
[5:29] <BHSPiMonkey> once mounting's done, performance is fine from my standpoint
[5:29] <BHSPiMonkey> (with or without switching to v3)
[5:30] <gnarface> ah. well, it was rsize=32768,wsize=32768, for your reference
[5:30] <gnarface> (you may still hit issues with directories that have lots of files)
[5:30] <gnarface> 32768 is the max
[5:30] <gnarface> default is much lower
[5:31] <gnarface> i thought the mount timeout issue meant you were missing rpc on the *server* not the clients, but i could be wrong

[5:31] * mythos (~mythos@unaffiliated/mythos) has joined #raspbian
[5:31] <BHSPiMonkey> No, the rpc daemon thing runs on the client
[5:32] <gnarface> http://lucatnt.com/2013/09/avoid-stuttering-streaming-from-nfs-shares-with-xbmc-on-the-raspberry-pi/
[5:32] <gnarface> this site recommends the rsize and wsize thing, but also mentions nolock
[5:33] * mortal (~mortal@ip-58-182.dhcp.opintanner.fi) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[5:33] <BHSPiMonkey> I was forced to add nolock because I'm using v3 and didn't want to run a statd on my client
[5:34] * jose__ (6f5de77a@gateway/web/freenode/ip.111.93.231.122) has joined #raspbian
[5:34] <BHSPiMonkey> (Trying to mount using vers=3 yells at you to either run a statd to manage local file locks or use nolock)
[5:35] * twolife is now known as twolife`
[5:36] <BHSPiMonkey> gnarface: the use case in your article is a bit the opposite of mine (my pi is the heart of my NAS, not my playback device) though those tweaks might still benefit my outbound streaming performance
[5:36] <BHSPiMonkey> truthfully most of my media playback currently takes place over either Samba or HTTP though
[5:56] <BHSPiMonkey> So I just did a quick test with a TV episode. From fastest to slowest: HTTP (6.35MB/s), SMB (6.00MB/s), NFS (5.86MB/s), SCP (3.0MB/s).
[5:56] * vagrantc (~vagrant@freegeek/vagrantc) Quit (Quit: leaving)
[5:56] <BHSPiMonkey> HTTP is using Apache
[5:57] <gnarface> yea, it doesn't seem right that nfs is slower than samba
[5:57] <gnarface> traditionally it is faster
[6:02] <BHSPiMonkey> gnarface: repeated the NFS copy with your options added; went up to 5.91MB/s (obviously not scientific, and i/o devices are involved)
[6:03] <BHSPiMonkey> that's a 1.24 second difference in the download time for this file, for context
[6:04] <gnarface> interesting... how does cpu usage compare between nfs and samba for that file transfer?
[6:04] <BHSPiMonkey> didn't monitor
[6:04] <gnarface> i would also have expected samba cpu usage to be higher (and therefore to inhibit performance) but ...
[6:04] <gnarface> who knows, samba *could* have improved...
[6:04] <gnarface> i would have expected it to perform more similarly to scp
[6:05] <BHSPiMonkey> samba isn't encrypted
[6:05] <gnarface> it isn't, but that's not to say its very efficient either, historically
[6:06] <BHSPiMonkey> my little test also completely ignores per-file overhead
[6:09] <alex_john> Hi. I wish to develop a camera driver for my Post graduation project. I bought Raspberry pi. Downloaded Linux source code from https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux . But I cant find find any CSI driver for it. I am using V4l2 framework as I found v4l2 support in the downloaded kernel. But I am stuck at, the CSI-2 driver. I have no Idea about how i can interface my camera with the CSI-2. I could successfully build my cam
[6:10] <alex_john> I could find the driver and other related driver source code for Raspberry camera which is in the market now.
[6:11] <alex_john> Can anybody pls help me
[6:12] <BHSPiMonkey> alex_john: I don't think I can help you, but you should know your question is a bit hard to understand as written

[12:11] <sireorion> firmware
[12:12] <BManojlovic> http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=30818
[12:12] <sireorion> hehe... im totally lost here BManojlovic ... so i search for zd1211 on google?
[12:13] <BManojlovic> and as guy said on that thread google is your friend
[12:13] <BManojlovic> http://zd1211.wiki.sourceforge.net/
[12:14] <BManojlovic> http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/zd1211/zd1211-firmware/1.4/zd1211-firmware-1.4.tar.bz2
[12:14] <BManojlovic> unpack that and put requested files into /lib/firmware/
[12:14] <BManojlovic> and again i can't really tell you if it even work with ti
[12:15] <BManojlovic> it
[12:15] <sireorion> ok
[12:16] <sireorion> hmm... how do i unpack it....
[12:16] * sireorion are an totally noob on this crap
[12:16] <BManojlovic> if on winDOS use 7zip
[12:16] <BManojlovic> or on rpi
[12:16] <BManojlovic> tar vxf zd1211-firmware-1.4.tar.bz2
[12:17] <gnarface> seriously? fail. jxvf
[12:17] <gnarface> that's bz2. 7zip probably can't handle it either
[12:17] <gnarface> i could be wrong
[12:17] <gnarface> or you know, just bunzip
[12:18] <gnarface> bunzip2*
[12:20] <BManojlovic> gnarface: ?
[12:20] <gnarface> BManojlovic: i'm pretty sure you need the 'j' for bzip2
[12:21] <BManojlovic> latest gnu tar use libarchive behind and will auto detect it and use corresponding de-compressor
[12:21] <gnarface> BManojlovic: 'vxf' alone would just be for uncompressed tar
[12:21] <BManojlovic> like i said ;)
[12:21] <gnarface> BManojlovic: you sure?
[12:21] <BManojlovic> yes :)
[12:21] <gnarface> indeed

[12:23] <gnarface> well i guess i stand corrected, sorry
[12:24] <BManojlovic> that is why i really like 7zip
[12:24] <BManojlovic> it decompress all crap i put it trough

[14:12] <ioudas2> i do

[14:14] <diederik> I don't have a wireless card myself so can try things out for you. What I have noticed in the past that when the SSID is hidden, I had problems connecting. Making it un-hidden usually solved it, after which you can normally hide the SSID again.

[14:59] <diederik> as soon as you add the jessie repo, your whole system will be upgraded to jessie (unless you go on a massive pinning excercise) since apt by default selects the highest version, ie the ones from jessie
[15:01] <diederik> what you could try (no garantees what-so-ever) is download the various 1.9.1 debs (libtag1/libtag1c2a/libtag1vanilla) and install those with "dpkg -i <debfile(s)>"
