[3:25] <Skellington> i need a hd with a hd system for linux and mac os

[3:25] <Skellington> and HFS+ ist read only -.-
[3:26] * sraue (~stephan@xbmc/staff/sraue) has joined #raspbian
[3:36] <b4tm4n> can someone help me with a keyboard issue?
[3:37] <Skellington> ?
[3:38] <b4tm4n> i'm trying to boot kali on RPi, it boots fine all the way to the log on prompt, however no keyboard
[3:39] <b4tm4n> (i know this is a raspbian forum, but i'm hoping someone can just help with the debugging)
[3:39] <Skellington> raspberry-caonfig
[3:39] <b4tm4n> what is that?
[3:40] <shiftplusone> b4tm4n, which pi do you have and do other usb devices wrok? Also, you know this isn't a kali support channel, right? O_o
[3:41] <shiftplusone> *work, sorry
[3:41] <b4tm4n> right, see my previous comment - i'm hoping some of the smart people in here can help me debug
[3:41] <b4tm4n> i have a b+, it works perfectly with noobs, raspbian, arch, etc.s
[3:41] <b4tm4n> it even worked with kali 1.0.6
[3:42] <b4tm4n> however that version didn't support my wireless usb adapter - in digging for solutions to that problem i noticed 1.0.7 had been released
[3:42] <shiftplusone> right, but do other usb devices work?
[3:43] <b4tm4n> so i flashed it... it boots fine but as soon as the logon prompt hits, no keyboard
[3:43] <b4tm4n> shiftplusone, how would i tell? would could i test?
[3:43] <b4tm4n> they worked before
[3:43] <shiftplusone> are you able to connect in any way? ssh? serial?
[3:43] <b4tm4n> when it boots, it confirms the keyboard model
[3:43] <b4tm4n> no
[3:44] <b4tm4n> i port scanned from another computer and all ports were down
[3:44] <b4tm4n> i believe ssh is running by default
[3:44] <b4tm4n> so one that i had is that it dies at the log on prompt - but that seems kinda weird
[3:44] <shiftplusone> what do you mean by it confirms the keyboard model? You see it in the boot messages?
[3:44] <b4tm4n> shiftplusone, that is correct
[3:44] <shiftplusone> does the red light on the pi remain always on?
[3:45] <b4tm4n> and it works briefly, i can toggle the LEDs for numlock and caps lock
[3:45] <b4tm4n> however, they are permanently off once i hit the logon prompt
[3:46] <shiftplusone> hmm.... what's confusing is that it worked on 1.0.6... =/
[3:46] <shiftplusone> Is it a fancy keyboard with backlit keys and all that?
[3:46] <b4tm4n> yeah, i did have to swap out the .elf files on the boot partition to get that version to boot though
[3:47] <b4tm4n> maybe i need to grab a new firmware version - could that be related?
[3:47] <b4tm4n> shiftplusone, no, standard dell usb keyboard
[3:47] <shiftplusone> firmware can be related yes
[3:47] <shiftplusone> the b+ needs newer firmware for usb to work
[3:47] <shiftplusone> which is why I was focusing on that
[3:48] <shiftplusone> but if the keyboard enumerates in the first place suggests that it's recent enough
[3:48] <b4tm4n> i see there is a new version pushed 3 days ago, which is newer than what i pulled
[3:48] <b4tm4n> yeah, it's weird it works then stops - could it be an issue with the img?
[3:48] <shiftplusone> so now I'm wondering if maybe the power supply is to blame or if the current limiter on usb is kicking in
[3:49] <b4tm4n> never was a issue before
[3:49] <b4tm4n> 5V/2A supply
[3:49] <shiftplusone> aye... just trying to be thorough
[3:49] <b4tm4n> shiftplusone, no keep talking - this is what i was hoping to get from here
[3:50] <b4tm4n> i didn't realize a newer version of the firmware was available - i can try that
[3:50] <shiftplusone> do you see any message saying something like irq #32 disabled in the boot messages or later?
[3:51] <b4tm4n> not that i recall
[3:51] <shiftplusone> other than trying the newer firmware, I'm not sure there's much you can do without a serial adapter
[3:51] <b4tm4n> serial adapter?
[3:51] <b4tm4n> to go ps/2 to usb?
[3:52] <shiftplusone> nuh
[3:52] * joe2649826739486 (~Instantbi@ool-1892e275.dyn.optonline.net) has joined #raspbian
[3:52] <shiftplusone> it's a bit like sshing in, but over gpio and without all the fancy ssh features
[3:52] <shiftplusone> so you can get terminal access no matter what
[3:52] <b4tm4n> gotcha
[3:53] <b4tm4n> when i copy the newer firmware over - do i replace just the elfs in the boot partition?
[3:53] <shiftplusone> bootcode.bin, start.elf and the fixup files
[3:54] <b4tm4n> so not start_cd and start_x?
[3:54] <b4tm4n> and, do i need to change anything in the /boot path on the main partition?
[3:56] <shiftplusone> start_cd isn't really used. start_x is used when the camera is activated and for some multimedia applications
[3:56] <shiftplusone> it wouldn't hurt to grab those too, but they're not used by default
[3:56] <b4tm4n> ok
[3:56] <b4tm4n> and just change the files on the boot partition, nowhere else?
[3:56] <shiftplusone> to start with, yeah
[3:57] <b4tm4n> ok, i'll give it a shot - thanks!
[3:57] <shiftplusone> then if you want to get fancy, you can replace the kernel and kernel modules
[3:57] <b4tm4n> ok

[20:00] <b4tm4n> can anyone help with the installation of the rtl8188eu driver?
[20:01] <shiftplusone> b4tm4n, https://github.com/lwfinger/rtl8188eu
[20:01] <shiftplusone> https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/kbuild/modules.txt
[20:01] <shiftplusone> all you need
[20:02] <b4tm4n> shiftplusone, mostly agreed, but i cannot install kernel headers, so i cannot compiles
[20:02] <b4tm4n> compile*
[20:03] <shiftplusone> https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux
[20:05] <b4tm4n> shiftplusone, am i to follow all of that?
[20:05] <shiftplusone> no, that's just where you can get the kernel source from
[20:05] <b4tm4n> shiftplusone, is installing the "kernel source" the same as installing the "kernel headers"
[20:05] <b4tm4n> (sorry, i'm a noob)
[20:06] <shiftplusone> kernel source has everything you need to build a kernel (and includes the headers)
[20:06] <b4tm4n> so i do this on the RPi, while it is running?
[20:06] <shiftplusone> I recommend getting the hang of compiling a kernel. I'm a bit too lazy to run you through every step right now, so I'm just pointing you in the general direction.
[20:07] <shiftplusone> Yeah, you can do that on the pi
[20:07] <b4tm4n> shiftplusone, no, that's fine, i need to know how to do this
[20:07] <b4tm4n> is this process exactly the same for each OS, not just raspbian
[20:08] <b4tm4n> for example, if i want to install the rtl8188eu driver on a kali linux image do i follow these same steps?
[20:08] <shiftplusone> yes, this is a distro-agnostic thing.
[20:09] <shiftplusone> the 'debian way' would be to install the kernel headers package (which is not available, but should be soon enough).
[20:09] <b4tm4n> are you around for a while to help if i have questions?
[20:10] <shiftplusone> sure
[20:10] <b4tm4n> this looks pretty straight forward, i do have one immediate question after skimming the process
[20:10] <b4tm4n> "In order to boot your new kernel, you'll need to copy the kernel
[20:10] <b4tm4n> image (e.g. .../linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage after compilation)
[20:10] <b4tm4n> to the place where your regular bootable kernel is found"
[20:11] <b4tm4n> where is this?
[20:11] <shiftplusone> where is what? where is the kernel placed after it's compiled or where does it need to be placed for you to boot it?
[20:12] <shiftplusone> also note that you don't need to compile the whole kernel just to get a module.
[20:12] * BCMM (~BCMM@unaffiliated/bcmm) has joined #raspbian
[20:13] <b4tm4n> ok - confused a little... to make sure i'm going down the right path, i want to install the rtl8188eu driver, to do this i need "make" and kernel headers installed, the link you sent me last is to compile kernel headers, correct?
[20:15] <shiftplusone> the last link is the whole kernel.... what you do with that is up to you. Look at that modules.txt file
[20:17] <b4tm4n> i guess that's my confusion, my goal is to install the rtl8188eu driver, to do that i know i need kernel headers - this is usually an apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -a)
[20:17] <b4tm4n> however, that will not work on an RPi
[20:17] <shiftplusone> right, so you do it the distro-agnostic way described in modules.txt
[20:18] <b4tm4n> ok, what part of that do i follow?
[20:18] * blkaway is now known as blkhawk
[20:19] <b4tm4n> again, i apologize for lack of knowledge, but i'm not sure what i'm trying to accomplish, once i know that i'll be good
[20:20] <b4tm4n> for example, do i need to follow a subset of what's provided in modules.txt or all of it?
[20:20] <shiftplusone> You don't need to apologise, it's how we all learn. Read sections 1, 2 and 5
[20:21] <b4tm4n> shiftplusone, thanks for you patience and help (i've been googling this problem all weekend)
[20:22] <b4tm4n> so the rtl8188eu driver is a "module" correct?
[20:22] <shiftplusone> nw, normally I'd just tell you all the steps or send you the .ko file, but as I said.... I'm lazy
[20:22] <shiftplusone> yes
[20:22] <b4tm4n> no, this way is fine (teaching a man to fish or something like that...)

[23:30] <plugwash> <b4tm4n> how can i install the linux headers on raspbian? <-- that depends on what kernel you are using. If you are using one of the debian style kernels from the raspbian repository then it's the usual debian way (a package called linux-headers-<version>)
[23:30] <plugwash> otoh if you are using a raspberry pi foundation kernel it's rather messier :(
[23:31] <plugwash> As for the B+ yes it is supported both by the foundation's raspberrypi-bootloader package and our raspberrypi-bootloader-nokernel package
[23:31] <b4tm4n> plugwash, the root of my problem is trying to get raspbian to run on a b+
[23:31] <b4tm4n> the raspbian version posted on raspberrypi.org does not work
[23:32] * teran_ (~teran@static.199.118.9.176.clients.your-server.de) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[23:33] <b4tm4n> plugwash, meaning it does not support b+
[23:33] * plugwash is pretty damn sure it does
[23:33] <plugwash> what exactly did you do and in what way exactly did it fail to work?
[23:34] <b4tm4n> plugwash, i flashed the image provided at rpi.org and it would simply not boot
[23:34] <b4tm4n> plugwash, i got around this by updating the firmware
[23:35] <b4tm4n> the problem is that i cannot install the linux headers for the firmware i updated to because they are not in the repos
[23:35] <b4tm4n> make sense?
[23:36] <plugwash> What version of the image did you download?
[23:36] <b4tm4n> the one that is hosted there now, 2014-06-20 with the SHA-1 of b020908e3cba472a24f7a17498008eb69d86d1cb and kernel version 3.12
[23:37] <b4tm4n> the green led flashes once and then nothing
[23:37] <b4tm4n> it never boots
[23:40] <plugwash> how exactly did you update the firmware?
[23:41] <b4tm4n> by copying the .elfs and bootcode.bin from https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware to the /boot partition
[23:41] <b4tm4n> after doing this, it booted
[23:42] <b4tm4n> but the kernel headers for 3.12.26 are not in the repos, so i can't install kernel headers, which means i can't install the driver for my usb wireless adapter
[23:46] <plugwash> There is no kernel headers package for the raspberry pi foundation kernels :(
[23:47] <plugwash> you can get the full kernel source from https://github.com/raspberrypi/kernel . you can find the revision that corresponds to a raspberrpi/firmware commit by looking at the file extra/git_hash in the raspberrypi/firmware repo
[23:48] <plugwash> I think it's possisble to use the full kernel source as headers but I don't remember the exact details of how offhand
