[9:27] <mascondante> I realize it's off topic but since I've got a room full of fellow (hopefully awake) geeks I'll poise the question. Anyone ever had "cannot find a valid peer process to connect to" happen to them in VMware? Afaik everything was happy and then wasn't. The only possibly related thing is my AV went haywire but I reinstalled it and it's happy again.
[9:30] <mascondante> Wait a sec... I wonder if it's shell code injection prevention in my AV... that's created issues for me before with other things.

[15:44] <surf> hi guys I have 4 sata hdds and a rpi. I'd like to do a nas + media streaming server. which is the best way to do so? sata port replicator via usb?
[15:46] <gordonDrogon> that would work... but it may not be the most optimal solution.
[15:47] <surf> gordonDrogon, what would you suggest?
[15:48] <gordonDrogon> a small Atom based system with 4 SATA ports.
[15:49] <gordonDrogon> the issue with the Pi is the single USB interface - and the Ethernet interface is USB, so traffic to/from those 4 drives is sharing the one bus with the ethernet. it should work, but may be somewhat sub-optimal.

[17:59] <vagrantc> Natherul: there are raspbian images all over the internet from all sorts of different sources...
[17:59] <Natherul> I have asked him that and he tells me yes.,... I do think its weird as wekk
[17:59] <Natherul> *well
[17:59] <vagrantc> Natherul: so latest isn't very descriptive
[17:59] <lost_soul> have him try another card. maybe
[17:59] <Natherul> no, but he got the latest one from http://www.raspberrypi.org/ if hes telling me correctly
[18:00] <Natherul> and its still have the users as his name, so its not flashing correctly I belive but I cant for any reason understand why
[18:01] <shiftplusone> I've seen that happen when sd adapters were broken. win32diskimager would report that a new image was written, but it wouldn't actually do anything.

[18:17] <Natherul> that the options we wanted was grayed out there
[18:17] <methuzla> also probably not necessary
[18:18] <methuzla> do you know anything about the reader HW?
[18:18] <lost_soul> Natherul: if the problem is indeed a hardware issue with the card reader/writer than no amount of software will fix the issue.
[18:18] * teran (~teran@85.235.174.26) has joined #raspbian
[18:19] <Natherul> well I figure that but I did not expect HW problems since its reading it fine... my bad I guess
[18:20] <methuzla> it's reading fine in the pi, but that's different reader HW (i.e. the reader on the pi)
[18:20] <lost_soul> I personally would either have him try to write the image to a different card, or use a different reader/writer to write the card.
[18:20] <Natherul> and methuzla, not for the reader, dont have that much experiance with it, I want to learn what I dont however
[18:21] <Natherul> yeah, but what I meant with reading fine was that windows was seeing the disk as well and the SW stated no errors. as such I did not think of HW failure
[18:21] <methuzla> SW could be misleading
[18:22] <Natherul> so it would seem then, thanks for the assistance

[18:23] <methuzla> you shouldn't need anything other than a raspian img and windiskimager
[18:25] <methuzla> might also be worth re-grabbing the raspbian img to make sure it's as expected
[18:25] <methuzla> http://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/
[18:26] <Natherul> yes, but formatting it and then trying to start the pi as well should show if there is a HW problem right? I mean then it should not boot
[18:26] <methuzla> correct
[18:27] * TDog (~chatzilla@75-164-3-86.tcso.qwest.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 272 seconds)
[18:27] <methuzla> but in the same way windiskimager doesn't appear to be actually writing the img
[18:28] <methuzla> that HP disk formatter might also not be actually formatting
[18:28] <lost_soul> why not just format it with the hp thing, and write a file or two from the system you're doing the formatting from. Open the card on that system to see if the files were written
[18:29] <lost_soul> The HP utility cannot be working if the card still holds details of the previously installed raspbian though
[18:30] <lost_soul> which is why I believe shiftplusone and methuzla are correct in saying it's a HW issue... unless your friend really doesn't have the read/write tab in the proper position and just didn't understand what you were asking him when you did so.
[18:31] <methuzla> that'd be a good/quick way of verifying the reader HW is working
[18:31] <Natherul> right, he just did a format using another tool and its all empty right now, the pi does not boot or anything with the cardd now
[18:32] <Natherul> hes redownloading the raspbian img and flashing that again now
[18:32] <lost_soul> sounds like you're off to a good start then
[18:32] <methuzla> so sounds like the HW is working then
[18:33] <methuzla> not sure why windiskimager didn't write a new image
[18:33] <methuzla> guess we'll see what happens...
[18:34] <lost_soul> methuzla: the fact that both the HP utility and windiskimager didn't do as they should have leads me to believe the read/write tab wasn't in the proper position and his buddy has since rectified that
[18:34] <lost_soul> I've used both of those tools and they have always worked for me

[22:34] <pimanG> Hi Guys, ich ha a problem mounting a Canon Camera with my tqo Pis. Its a canon eos 60D, that works perfectly with my Laptop (Ubuntu), but cannot be mounted on my raspberrys. They run on Wheezy. When I connect the USB-cable, the message "Error initialising camera: -1 Unspecified Error" appears. Sometimes also the message "error initialising camera: could not lock the device" appears. Surprisingly, a Nikon camera works on my Raspberrys. Do you have any idea, w
[22:34] <pimanG> hat i could do?
[22:34] <PhotoJim> pimanG: maybe you need a powered hub. The camera might draw more power via USB than the Pi can provide.
[22:34] <PhotoJim> The Pi can't provide as much power on USB as most computers can.

[22:34] <pimanG> i actually have a powered hub
[22:35] <PhotoJim> so much for that theory
[22:35] <PhotoJim> try it directly in the Pi then, perhaps the camera and the hub are incompatible somehow
[22:36] <PhotoJim> or use a different hub if you have one to try
[22:36] <pimanG> i already did.
[22:36] <PhotoJim> I'm out of theories then
