[2:53] <WACOMalt> Hey folks I'm having a bit of a problem. I installed a LCD screen and it's drivers. It came with a custom shutdown command (binary :/) to cleanly stop the display and shutdown so it doesnt hang like the shutdown command does
[2:53] <WACOMalt> but now when I boot it goes through all the init.d stuff and then it just sits there, never connecting to rc 0 or anything
[2:55] <WACOMalt> anyone know why this would be and how I can rectify the issue?
[2:57] <WACOMalt> what commands does raspi-config run when you choose "boot to console on boot"

[3:34] <mascondante> Ah sweet overclock. Got myself another pi and a nice case. Even though I've been told I don't need them I threw on the heat sinks because they look cool.
[3:38] <mascondante> I'll link the picture once it gets done choking on Facebook. Runs smoother but I fear I'm going to have to nudge the overclock a bit higher than the 'stock options' in raspi-config to get a decent load time on modern webpages.
[3:41] <rockstar_> anybody tried raspberry as a web server, how is the performance?
[3:41] <mascondante> I haven't but I've read it works just dandy :-)
[3:42] <rockstar_> nice
[3:42] <rockstar_> can't wait to try it out, once dns is ready :)
[3:44] <mascondante> You should have better luck transmitting than viewing. If I wasn't patient I would have thrown a rock at mine waiting for facebook to settle down.
[3:45] <mascondante> For the record I just had the thought to load m.facebook.com and it does indeed work better.
[3:48] <mascondante> Anyone pushed over 1000/500 with their dongles on a powered hub and nice and cool? I'd like some relatively stable settings to jump to before I start fine tuning.

[10:50] <gordonDrogon> anything that seems too cheap to be true...
[10:50] <gordonDrogon> ie. ebay.
[10:56] <TheSnide> directhex: my experience is that kingston is better for seq, and sandisk for normal io
[10:57] <TheSnide> seems to be on par with the number of au that can be opened at a time.
[10:57] <directhex> radically different block sizes, presumably?
[10:57] <directhex> anyway, that helps, thanks
[10:58] <directhex> it's just for a build bot, so random access is more useful than sequential
[10:58] <TheSnide> yep
[10:58] <TheSnide> btw, reads are same. only writes are affected

[16:20] <mascondante> gordonDrogon: Figured I wouldn't get so lucky. I'll probably use the old one as a stable environment for learning programming as we discussed. I wonder how PCs are able to use multiple CPUs at once like say servers. If I understood that I'd likely be able to wrap my ADD brain around why it's not possible to do it on the RPi. I acknowledge that I can likely be annoying because I'm coming into this amazing new world full of curiosity with very li
[16:20] <mascondante> ttle knowledge. The only difference is I can find things pretty well on Google so I doubt anyone will be sending me any http://igtfy.com links as a passive aggressive way of suggesting me to Google it first. Click the link. I think you will be amused thinking of people it would be perfect for. One of the main reasons the Raspberry Pi was made is to usher in a new heard of engineers and programmers. I think it's a fantastic tool for learning in
[16:20] <mascondante> the classroom. In fact I think I'll show mine to the Engineering instructor at the college. But someone with no local friend to work with them to get past the hurdles of the introductory learning it feels like diving off a cliff with a parachute you don't know quite how to operate.
[16:20] <mascondante> Sorry for the tl;dr I just wanted to get that out there.
[16:22] <gordonDrogon> PCs use multiple CPUs because they're all on the same chip - same bus, same memory.

[16:24] <mascondante> Thank you. I feel a bit like Dee-Dee in Dexter's lab if you've ever seen the show. "Ooooo pretty colors! What does this button do?" :BOOM:

[18:56] <QB89Dragon> Hey y'all. I just received a very nice touchscreen display with an EGalax touchscreen controller. It works out of the box with every other linux distro I've tried, but with raspbian, it seems to not be built into the kernel by default
[18:56] <QB89Dragon> This seems strange as the screen was marketed as being made for the r-pi
[18:57] <QB89Dragon> I've tried building the kernel myself on an ubuntu 14.04 machine with the armhf 4.8 compiler, with the touchscreen and egalax drivers enabled, and it did not work and made my r-pi go crazy so I restored from a backup
[18:58] <QB89Dragon> I really hate the idea of recompiling the kernel every time there's an update. Anyone know a better way?
[19:03] * TDog (~chatzilla@75-164-3-86.tcso.qwest.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 250 seconds)
[19:06] <vagrantc> the armhf compiler on ubuntu is for armv7, and the raspberry pi is armv6
[19:07] <vagrantc> so it will build incompatible modules

[19:22] <QB89Dragon> I downloaded the kernel from github for raspbian
[19:23] <vagrantc> ok, so the kernel could come from raspberrypi.org, raspbian.org or any random website on the internet...
[19:23] <vagrantc> github is a big place, you might want to be specific
[19:26] <QB89Dragon> I followed this guide

[19:42] <QB89Dragon1> is there any reason that support for these touchscreens has been left out of the raspbian kernel? Seems almost an obvious choice to include it given the push towards touchscreens going on at the moment with the r-pi
[19:43] <QB89Dragon1> I haven't compiled too many kernels myself, but I'm under the impression that it makes receiving updates going forwards quite laborious in that you have to keep recompiling it manually
[19:45] <vagrantc> QB89Dragon1: maybe the rpi foundation has an issue tracker that you could request to get it enabled by default?
[19:46] <vagrantc> at least as a module
[19:46] <vagrantc> that would be my recommendation

[19:48] <QB89Dragon1> I've sent them an email already and this was the reply "Thank you for your email, we would suggest that you contact Raspian with regards to this issue.  Raspian is not owned or maintained by the Raspberry Pi Foundation."
[19:52] <vagrantc> uhhh.
[19:52] <vagrantc> the raspberry pi foundation produces images using raspbian, with notable differences like *their own kernel(
[19:52] <vagrantc> *
[19:53] <vagrantc> well, that's disappointing
[19:53] <vagrantc> that said, raspbian does ship it's own kernel, but since there's no "official" raspbian image, most people use the raspberry pi foundation images, from what i gather
[19:53] <vagrantc> or folks use raspbian-ua-netinst
[19:55] <QB89Dragon1> yeah, kinda leaves me at a dead-end with this touchscreen. I use the pi for running my 3D printer and was about to whip up a touch-based way of interacting with it while it is printing
[19:55] <vagrantc> QB89Dragon1: this repository is maintained by the rpi foundation folks... i think: https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/issues
[19:55] <vagrantc> QB89Dragon1: report the issue there, if it isn't already
[19:56] <vagrantc> QB89Dragon1: then you'll get people who at least have some idea of what they're actually doing, i'd hope.
[19:56] <QB89Dragon1> hopefully - I'll give that a try. thanks!

[19:58] * vagrantc is amazed at the response to that email
[19:59] <vagrantc> essentially, one of the *only* components they maintain themselves, they're saying to ask someone else to fix it.
[19:59] <vagrantc> for nearly all other issues, that might be appropriate
[20:00] <vagrantc> QB89Dragon1: there's also #raspberrypi ... there might be people there who could help as well
[20:00] <vagrantc> certainly worth asking
[20:00] <vagrantc> QB89Dragon1: but go ahead and file the feature request on github's issues ... worst that happens is it gets ignored, best case, someone actually enables it :)

[20:11] <Zefram_Cochrane> Hi. I'm getting the following error while trying to compile. g++ error: unrecognized option '--std=c++11'.
[20:11] <QB89Dragon1> vagrantc: Just got an issue posted up there https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/issues/718

[20:12] <diederik> Hi! I want to connect 1 RPi with an ethernet cable to another and have them both use a wifi connection to reach the outside world.
[20:12] * FlummN_away is now known as Guest79497
[20:12] <diederik> What would be good words to search for to find how to do that?
[20:13] <shiftplusone> diederik, by the way, regarding that topic about transfer speeds. You should try the tests with the latest foundation kernel as well, since it probably uses a different driver
[20:14] <diederik> shiftplusone: that is an excellent idea, thanks!
[20:15] <shiftplusone> np

[20:15] <vagrantc> QB89Dragon1: nice! good luck!
[20:16] <vagrantc> diederik: if you're not using a hub, you may need a crossover cable (unles the RPI has auto-mdx detection?) and you'll want to look up doing a NATted firewall
[20:17] <diederik> vagrantc: I thought current network cables could work as crossover cables?
[20:17] <diederik> and thanks for the NATted fw suggestion
[20:17] <vagrantc> diederik: arno-iptables-firewall is a package in debian that walks you through setting up the firewalling rules
[20:18] <vagrantc> there are others that do similar things
[20:18] <vagrantc> diederik: it requires hardware support on at least one of the ends ... gigabit ethernet has auto-mdx as part of the specifications, i think... so yeah, usually you don'tneed crossover anymore
[20:19] <vagrantc> diederik: but i think rpi is 10/100 ethernet ... so it may not have auto-mdx.
[20:19] <diederik> rpi is indeed 10/100 ethernet, so I guess I'll just have to try it ;-)
[20:19] <shiftplusone> pi does auto-mdx, pretty much everything does.
[20:20] <vagrantc> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medium_Dependent_Interface#Auto_MDI-X
[20:21] <diederik> shiftplusone: excellent. vagrantc: thanks for the link; I was already looking up auto-mdx
