[1:19] <hubber> hi
[1:19] * gbaman (~gbaman@members.unit1.farsetlabs.org.uk) Quit (Ping timeout: 276 seconds)
[1:20] <hubber> i got a question - would be nice if any1 could help me pls - i want to install a package via "dpkg --install .... " but the console returns " /usr/bin/mandb: can't write to /var/cache/man/2447: No space left on device" and i just extended the partition
[1:20] <hubber> i also checked it using gparted

[1:36] <hubber> http://pastebin.com/ueqLsbsP
[1:36] <hubber> i dont get it
[1:39] * yohnnyjoe (~yohnnyjoe@c-69-251-73-211.hsd1.dc.comcast.net) has joined #raspbian
[1:40] <peetbog> did you reboot after resizing the partition?
[1:41] <hubber> yes
[1:41] <hubber> a couple times
[1:41] <diederik> hubber: how did you extend the partition?
[1:42] <hubber> raspi-config
[1:42] <hubber> extend filesystem
[1:42] <diederik> ok, that means that both the partition and the filesystem should be enlarged (as opposed to only the former)
[1:43] <hubber> i checked it using gparted
[1:44] <hubber> the partiotion is enlarged but the fs not
[1:45] <diederik> ah ok. then maybe raspi-config failed (partly) and that was probably because it had no room to work
[1:46] <hubber> now i tried it another time
[1:46] <hubber> "SIze 30G"
[1:46] <hubber> worked (y)
[1:46] <diederik> excellent
[1:46] <hubber> thx anyway
[1:47] <diederik> was just about to suggest 'resize2fs /dev/mmcblk0p2'
[1:48] <hubber> the raspberry got gpio pins but no idea what to do with them - i'm not familar to that electronics stuff
[1:48] * lukem (44265e1f@gateway/web/freenode/ip.68.38.94.31) has joined #raspbian
[1:48] <diederik> there is no requirement to use them
[1:48] * creemj (~mjc@60-234-221-162.bitstream.orcon.net.nz) Quit (Quit: leaving)
[1:49] <hubber> yeah, but i want to "learn" something new
[1:49] <Chillum> they are neat
[1:49] <Chillum> they can input or output and there are digital and analog
[1:49] <Chillum> you can control stuff and read info from stuff in a way you cannot do with a normal computer
[1:50] <Chillum> hubber: pick something you want your Pi to control or monitor and go from there
[1:50] <Chillum> you can hook up displays, buttons etc
[1:51] <lukem> .
[1:51] <Chillum> most of the actual electronics is pretty easy because the CPU does all the logic
[1:51] <lukem> I'm running Deluge bittorrent client via my raspberry pi which is running raspbian. No matter what I do I keep having an issue with my permissions. I tried changing them all to 7777 but that seems to have only made matters worse.
[1:51] <hubber> i friend of mine is very familiar to that stuff and the explained me a lithium-ion battery loading circuit - and i was like: o_o
[1:51] <hubber> ok
[1:51] <Chillum> I don't think a lithium-ion battery loading circuit needs a computer
[1:52] <Chillum> you can make that without a PI
[1:52] <Chillum> oh I see, unrelated lol
[1:52] <hubber> yeah ^^
[1:53] * samuelle (~samuelle@201.255.115.139) has joined #raspbian
[1:54] <hubber> i thought of managing my homenetwork but i'm not clear in which way so thats difficult

[2:00] * urlgrey (~urlgrey@108-207-0-227.lightspeed.sntcca.sbcglobal.net) has joined #raspbian
[2:01] <hubber> i got another question: if a create a wifi network (AC) via hostapd in order to monitor the traffic of my smartphone (apps, ...) - then i just have to monitor on the interface wlan0, or am I wrong?

[2:16] <Chillum> hubber: an easier way would be to use an arp poisoning like ettercap
[2:16] <hubber> yeah
[2:16] <Chillum> it can redirect the network traffic through your sniffing box by lying about arp
[2:16] <Chillum> works for almost every device out there
[2:17] <Chillum> you can even disable or even impersonate SSL
[2:17] * Hopper (Hopper@244.235.106.212.dynamic.jazztel.es) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[2:17] <hubber> but i can't use "arpspoof 192.168.x.x -i wlan0 -t 192.168.0.1"
[2:17] <Chillum> a lot of devices dont' check the host key
[2:17] <hubber> ok
[2:17] <hubber> because the local device IS the gateway
[2:17] * otter768 (~otter768@cpe-67-11-53-3.satx.res.rr.com) has joined #raspbian
[2:18] <Chillum> well if it is the gateway
[2:18] <Chillum> then it is already getting the traffic
[2:18] <hubber> so i asked if i could apply that just on the whole interface
[2:18] <Chillum> oh
[2:18] <Chillum> you can specify a subnet or target list and force it to only use a given interface
[2:18] <hubber> the device is getting the traffic but not "prepared"
[2:19] <Chillum> prepared? If the device is getting the traffic then tshark should catch it
[2:19] <hubber> ok i'm not familiar to that
[2:19] <Chillum> what do you mean prepaers
[2:19] <Chillum> okay well wireshark is the gui version, probably a better start unless you are automating it
[2:19] <Chillum> tshark is the command line version
[2:19] <Chillum> they are packet sniffers
[2:20] <Chillum> lets you view or save the packets
[2:20] <hubber> first I have to configure that in hostapd, right?
[2:21] * urlgrey (~urlgrey@108-207-0-227.lightspeed.sntcca.sbcglobal.net) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)

[2:24] <hubber> Chillum: what did you meant with "impersonate SSL"? - sslstip
[2:25] <Chillum> hubber: ettercap can create on the fly certs that look like the real ones but are self-signed
[2:25] <Chillum> if the user accepts the certificate, or a lot of embedded devices do not check
[2:25] <Chillum> then you control the SSL session and can read/modify the stream
[2:25] <Chillum> it is a type of man in the middle attack
[2:26] <hubber> yes, i know that
[2:26] <Chillum> ssl strip just avoids the use of SSL, SSL poisoning allows SSL to happen with you in the middle
[2:26] <hubber> ok
[2:26] <Chillum> but sends off warnings in browsers. But the apps on your phone may not check
[2:27] <Chillum> a lot of bad developers neglect ssl host key checkinhg
[2:27] <Chillum> and phone apps are a mecca for bad developers

[2:28] <hubber> you said that i should save the packets - but (how) should I save them?
[2:29] <Chillum> googled "tshark tutorial" http://www.linuxuser.co.uk/tutorials/monitor-network-traffic-tutorial
[2:29] <Chillum> or you could view them real time in wireshark
[2:29] <Chillum> wireshark you just run and push the capture button
[2:29] <hubber> thx
[2:30] <Chillum> if you have any other questions PM me, this is a bit off topic for raspbian
[2:30] <hubber> no remote dekstop service installed - just a ssh session
[2:30] <hubber> ok, thx

[4:43] <peetbog> so this is your first try with raspian?
[4:45] <noob> no i downloaded raspi from raspberrypi.org worked fine many times but i guess this screen needs a driver and the dvd supposedly is all you need but i cant get it to work

[18:19] <anunnaki> has anyone had any issues with putting / on an external usb drive? i tried twice with two slightly different online guides and both ended with a kernel panic and that the root= option wasnt correct in cmdline.txt i copied my / from sd to the usb drive(ext4 fs) then set root=/dev/sda3.. then tried setting root=PARTUUID= and then tried root=UUID=
[18:19] <anunnaki> correction.. tried three times
[18:20] <lordievader> anunnaki: My / is on an nfs share. So I suppose it could just as well be on an external drive.

[18:26] <anunnaki> all the google results show you just copy root to and ext4 partition and then set cmdline.txt to boot it.. and to add rootdelay of course since usb needs a couuple seconds to be read
[18:27] <anunnaki> the other guides asy to dd the image onto the usb drive and then copy boot to the sd card and then set it to boot.. but i dont need to do that since i already have / on sda3.
[18:27] <anunnaki> i even set it in fstab to boot the usb drive..

[18:29] <lordievader> Fstab has nothing to do with what get's booted. The original pi expects its kernel to be on the sdcard. I guess the newer ones haven't changed in that expectation.

[23:24] <diederik> anunnaki: do you have an initramfs?
[23:25] <diederik> afaik if you want to use sth like root=LABEL= or with UUID you need it

[23:31] <diederik> then with '/etc/kernel/postinst.d/initramfs-tools <kernel-version>' you can generate an initramfs
[23:32] <diederik> and with 'initramfs initrd.img-<kernel-version>' in /boot/config.txt you can let the system know about it.
[23:32] <diederik> then you should have a reasonable chance of getting things working
