[2:42] <plugwash> lambdumb, well the first step would be to get a root shell
[2:42] <plugwash> if nessacery using the init=/bin/sh trick
[2:42] <lambdumb> trying to login as root doesn't accept my usual password
[2:45] <plugwash> probablly need to use the init=/bin/sh trick then
[2:45] <lambdumb> what's that trick?
[2:46] <plugwash> add init=/bin/sh to the kernel command line (cmdline.txt on the boot partition on a Pi)
[2:46] <lambdumb> what happens after that?
[2:46] <plugwash> then when you boot the system you will be dropped into a root shell early in the boot process
[2:46] <lambdumb> will SSH be available?
[2:47] <plugwash> no, basically nothing but the kernel and a root shell on the console will be running
[2:47] <plugwash> and even once you have that root shell fixing up your permissions may be an uphill struggle depending on to what extent they are screwed up
[2:48] <plugwash> unless there is an awful lot of effort invested in the system setup it may be reinstall time
[2:49] <lambdumb> i did something really stupid
[2:49] <lambdumb> and took recursive ownership of /usr/
[2:51] * laza (~laza@b2b-130-180-1-210.unitymedia.biz) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[2:52] <lambdumb> i have access to a linux computer than can browse the filesystem on the card, maybe i could re-assign proper permissions from there?
[2:54] <plugwash> it's certainly possible but i'm not aware of any easy way to work out what the permisions/ownership for each file should be and then apply them

[2:57] * XSoul (~XRule@213.191.175.201) Quit (Ping timeout: 272 seconds)
[2:57] <plugwash> dunno, some googling reveals some suggestions but not any simple fixes
[2:57] <plugwash> and i've thankfully never made that particular fuckup myself

[7:57] <ppq> DexterF, that depends on how good you are with qemu, the whole debian package management matter, compiling etc.
[7:59] * meti (~meti@unaffiliated/meti) has joined #raspbian
[8:00] <ppq> imho the most straight forward approach is to set up a raspbian with the net installer on a clean sd (i.e. one that has been zero'ed), shrink the partition to the desired size afterwards and take an image of it with dd. the effect of the zeroing is that your image can be compressed at least to the size of the root partition.
[8:00] <DexterF> ppq: well, I'm more of an admin/scripter but I grew up on Slackware and maintain a dvb-streamer/mediacenter/raid debian box so, well, I know my way around the penguin pen
[8:01] <DexterF> raspbian net installer - so that installs a set on any x86 machine?
[8:02] <ppq> no, that installs raspbian on your raspberry pi
[8:02] <ppq> qemu would be the other way
[8:02] <ppq> or one of the scripts that do that for you
[8:02] <ppq> check github for build-raspbian-image or something like that
[8:03] <DexterF> how.. ah, ok, so net installer is another image. I thought that built an image on another computer. get it now.
[8:03] <ppq> never used it though
[8:03] <DexterF> well, I can give it a shot and sweep it under the rug when it goes up in flames I guess
[8:03] <DexterF> ok, thanks so far
[8:03] <ppq> good luck :)

[8:31] <diederik> great. You'll get a (standard) terminal, ssh and apt. You'll have to install the others yourself

[13:26] <shiftplusone> Shedra: raspberrypi.org or raspbian.org?
[13:26] <Shedra> I didn't find any information on raspbian.org ;)
[13:27] <shiftplusone> I mean which repo
[13:27] <Shedra> Ah
[13:27] <Shedra> Don't the use the same?
[13:27] <shiftplusone> no, raspbian.org mostly tracks debian and is managed by plugwash.
[13:28] <Shedra> My image downloaded from raspberrypi.org uses "http://mirrordirector.raspbian.org/raspbian/" as source
[13:28] <shiftplusone> raspberrypi.org contains extra stuff added by the raspberry pi foundation and is managed by moi
[13:28] <shiftplusone> Shedra: there's also /etc/apt/sources.list.d/raspi
[13:28] <shiftplusone> in short, raspbian.org - get it into debian first and it will make it into raspbian. You can talk to plugwash if you'd like him to consider an exception.
[13:29] <shiftplusone> raspberrypi.org - probably not, unless it's relevant to the education goals of the foundation or improving the performance of raspberry pi
[13:30] <Shedra> Hm.. okay

[13:34] <Shedra> Ah, right :) Thanks, then i'll just wait :D
[13:34] <Shedra> Any idea when it's going to be released?
[13:37] <shiftplusone> officially, not soon. Need to give collabora, wolfram and a few others a chance to update their packages.
[13:37] <TheLostAdmin> the trashcan needs an update too.
[13:40] <shiftplusone> unofficially, I'd like to put a preview image on the forum somewhere so that people can help test things and get used to systemd
[13:41] <shiftplusone> TheLostAdmin: ?
[13:41] * Guest75263 (debian-tor@95.215.44.145) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[13:42] <TheLostAdmin> I've been fiddling with the default desktop in Raspbian. There is a trash can in the upper left. You can drag-drop files to it to erase them (sort of). It works like Windows and OSX except there doesn't appear to be an 'empty trash' button/option.
[13:43] <Shedra> Will it be possible to upgrade a running installation to the new version? (Problem with the new systemd?)
[13:43] <TheLostAdmin> The only way I've found to actually remove the files is to go in with a terminal and delete them from the hidden directory that the trash can uses.
[13:44] <shiftplusone> Shedra: we'd like for that to be the case. Last time I tried, something was eating up 100% of the CPU afterwards. I didn't look into what was happening because it was a very hacky upgrade. Will need to revisit this before I know if there are actually any problems.
[13:44] <TheLostAdmin> It seams somewhat silly to provide a gui method to move files to a dot-trash folder with gui way to empty it.

[13:49] <Shedra> shiftplusone: okay :)
[13:50] <shiftplusone> I mean, a standard debian wheezy->jessie upgrade works just fine, so I see no reason why this shouldn't =/
[13:50] <at0m|c> oops, seems i had only migrated sources.list to testing, not sources.list.d/*
[13:51] <shiftplusone> at0m|c: don't
[13:51] <at0m|c> shiftplusone: i know. hence the oops.
[13:52] <shiftplusone> some of those repos will no longer be needed and the raspberrypi.org one doesn't have a proper jessie component yet
[13:52] <shiftplusone> so you'll end up with garbage if you do
[13:52] <TheLostAdmin> shiftplusone: a friend of mine (who is a long-time debian user) tried the standard upgrade (X86 hardware) and had problems. I'm not sure "works just fine" is accurate. Possibly works in most cases?

[14:03] <TheLostAdmin> I will continue to hope that things gradually drift towards a Raspberry Pi nirvana of tinkering & simple-as-Apple. I realize it's a challenge but I will hold hope.
[14:05] <at0m|c> as a freebsd user you hope for apple-store on pi? i'm confused.
[14:05] <at0m|c> what's wrong with apt :D
[14:09] <TheLostAdmin> at0m|c, apt is great. the apple-store on Pi is to make things more user-friendly for novices and people who have never heard of a command line but want a Raspberry Pi.
[14:10] <TheLostAdmin> Think of what happened when OSX first came-out. There was a massive uptake in Apple desktops from the IT crowd because it has a UNIX-like userland.
[14:10] <shiftplusone> something like ubuntu's software center would be nice, I guess
[14:10] <shiftplusone> or whatever their thing is called
[14:11] <methuzla> pi is all about learning, if it's too simple you learn nothing (about how things really work)
[14:11] <TheLostAdmin> To make it more professional and more appealing to the parents of aspiring youth, the software center (or whatever) would need curating.
[14:12] <at0m|c> closest to that on debian is synaptic, aptitude in UI.
[14:12] * KitB (~quassel@kitb.pw) has left #raspbian
[14:13] <at0m|c> debian old-timer like me shivers at the thought of software centers and network managers and other trickery
[14:13] * Guest75263 (debian-tor@95.215.44.145) has joined #raspbian
[14:14] <at0m|c> imo raspbian has great UI, my brother for example never used linux before and he's programming his way through python for home automation within a month of raspbian
[14:15] <TheLostAdmin> Understandable at0m|c. I wouldn't want to get rid of the way things are done or prevent people from looking under the hood. But the network managers and software centers make it less scary for the novices and more appealing to the masses. They do, however, have to be done in such a way that they don't interfere with the proper config files.
[14:16] <at0m|c> that's their main issue indeed, interference
[14:17] <TheLostAdmin> Raspbian does have a nice UI but it's not finished. There are things that most people expect out of a UI that are either missing or not part of the default installation.
[14:19] <at0m|c> consider it runs on 256MB machines. not much headroom there. and must be tough to maintain different versions, say another one 'more complete' for the new pi
[14:21] <TheLostAdmin> I don't actually expect what I would like to see to get done. I'm nobody special to Raspbian or the Pi. Just another user. But I see these as some of the thing that keep Linux from going mainstream and competing with Windows or OSX.
[14:21] <TheLostAdmin> Google's Chrome has a chance but I really hate the way they are taking that OS at the moment.
[14:22] <at0m|c> i can only hope new pi users will not be tempted too much to take the easy road and continue using what they know - windows. pi drew in so many users into linux, imo.
[14:22] <TheLostAdmin> I understand if you don't care about such things. I'm okay with that too. There needs to be non-mainstream OSes if only to keep the maintream guys from doing something too stupid.
[14:23] <TheLostAdmin> I worry about that (with what I want) too. It's happening with Chrome but Google is doing that on purpose.
[14:23] <at0m|c> they're protecting their bizz :)

[14:27] <TheLostAdmin> As for the phone, I'm pretty sure that a lot of that lock-in was forced on Google by the phone companies and phone manufacturers.
[14:29] <at0m|c> the lock-in is their business. providing the tools, the content, and eventually the ads
