[0:14] * b00ger_daddy (~aiB00gerD@pool-173-57-81-29.dllstx.fios.verizon.net) Quit (Quit: jIRCii - http://www.oldschoolirc.com)
[0:19] <ace_> how can I download the raspbian project for develop?
[0:20] <ace_> I am searching in raspbian.org but I only can see list of raspbian-devel
[0:21] <shiftplusone> develop what?
[0:22] <shiftplusone> raspbian is a collection of many different things, managed in different ways.
[0:22] <ace_> a raspbian-like OS
[0:22] <shiftplusone> well, mirror the repo and off you go.
[0:22] <shiftplusone> maybe all you want to do is create your own custom image of raspbian?
[0:23] * spacedentist (~quassel@hunson.server.spacedentist.net) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[0:23] <ace_> yes but I want to modify code and add function if its possible
[0:24] <shiftplusone> code of what?
[0:24] <ace_> boot
[0:24] <shiftplusone> sorry, I think you have some reading up to do.
[0:24] <ace_> sorry my english is too bad
[0:24] <shiftplusone> English seems okay, it just seems like you don't really know what you want.
[0:25] <ace_> I want to create my own OS
[0:25] <ace_> based in Raspbian
[0:25] <methuzla> ace_ raspbian is linux, it's a very complex OS, not a simple matter to just "modify" it
[0:26] <ace_> I want to work in drivers apps etc
[0:26] <shiftplusone> then do that
[0:26] <shiftplusone> but depending on what EXACTLY you want to do, you will need to download a different thing and modify it in different ways, then release it in different ways.
[0:27] <ace_> ok
[0:27] <ace_> I understand
[0:28] <shiftplusone> what the raspberry pi foundation does is take raspbian, add their own repo (with the packages they want to modify) and create a pre-configured image with the things they want pre-installed.
[0:30] <ace_> how could I begin?
[0:30] <shiftplusone> again, depends on exactly what you want to accomplish
[0:31] <methuzla> ace_ do you really want to make an OS? or just drivers and apps?
[0:31] * Guest5540 (debian-tor@95.215.44.145) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[0:31] <shiftplusone> https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/maint-guide/ is a must if you want to modify packages.
[0:31] <ace_> I would like to begin with a raspbian and modify/add/del function, drivers etc
[0:31] <ace_> methuzla, make an OS
[0:31] <shiftplusone> LDD3 (google) if you want to modify kernel
[0:32] <ace_> I want to learn
[0:32] * Smx (Elite8556@gateway/shell/elitebnc/x-qswmehlwgwtjzgbz) Quit (Excess Flood)
[0:32] <shiftplusone> spindle source code if you want to learn how the official image is made https://github.com/RPi-Distro/spindle
[0:32] * Guest5540 (debian-tor@openvpn/user/s7r) has joined #raspbian
[0:33] <methuzla> ace_ don't start with linux then, start much simpler
[0:33] * shiftplusone is tempted to point to 'Linux From Scratch'
[0:34] <ace_> shiftplusone, thank you very much :)
[0:34] <methuzla> i'm thinking like ucos or similar
[0:34] <ace_> methuzla, I saw minix3 but not works in rpi
[0:34] <shiftplusone> methuzla: is that the rtos that google spits out?
[0:36] * Smx (Elite8556@gateway/shell/elitebnc/x-cjaignlowonnazsu) has joined #raspbian
[0:36] <methuzla> ucos is MicroC OS, a very simple rtos
[0:36] * spacedentist (~quassel@hunson.server.spacedentist.net) has joined #raspbian
[0:37] <shiftplusone> well... if you take 'make an os' literally, maybe. But I think he's just talking about a custom linux distro. Even if you plan to work on the linux kernel, you only need to know C and how to read the documentation... there's very little actual hardware poking.
[0:38] <shiftplusone> let alone worrying about implementation details of fancy OS features
[0:39] * raymondhim (~raymondhi@c-73-164-116-168.hsd1.mn.comcast.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 244 seconds)
[0:40] * Smx (Elite8556@gateway/shell/elitebnc/x-cjaignlowonnazsu) Quit (Excess Flood)
[0:40] <methuzla> i guess i'm assuming "make an OS" = make an OS!
[0:41] <shiftplusone> madness
[0:42] <methuzla> at the linux level of complexity, yes.
[0:43] <shiftplusone> In that case, https://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/projects/raspberrypi/tutorials/os/ http://wiki.osdev.org/Main_Page https://github.com/raspberrypi/documentation/raw/master/hardware/raspberrypi/bcm2835/BCM2835-ARM-Peripherals.pdf https://github.com/raspberrypi/documentation/raw/master/hardware/raspberrypi/bcm2836/QA7_rev3.4.pdf
[0:43] * Dragonkeeper (~dragonkee@cpc2-gill2-0-0-cust69.20-1.cable.virginm.net) Quit (Quit: WeeChat 1.1.1)
[0:43] * taza (~taza@unaffiliated/taza) Quit ()

[0:44] * b4tm4n (~b4tm4n@gateway/vpn/privateinternetaccess/b4tm4n) has left #raspbian
[0:44] <shiftplusone> also anything by people like dwelch, dexos guy, peter lemon and so on
[0:45] * Smx (Elite8556@gateway/shell/elitebnc/x-fymkiuvulhytgelu) has joined #raspbian
[0:49] * raymondhim (~raymondhi@c-73-164-116-168.hsd1.mn.comcast.net) has joined #raspbian
[0:50] * Smx (Elite8556@gateway/shell/elitebnc/x-fymkiuvulhytgelu) Quit (Excess Flood)
[0:52] <methuzla> ace_ so what are you after? learning how an OS works under the hood? or just make linux distro?
[0:53] <ace_> to learn how its works
[0:54] <ace_> I want to begin modify it
[0:54] * Akex_ (uid58281@gateway/web/irccloud.com/x-ivxgtcntnerkjlax) Quit (Quit: Connection closed for inactivity)
[0:56] <ace_> but after I want to deepen
[0:57] <shiftplusone> In over your head a little.
[0:57] <methuzla> ace_ i'd go the other way, start dead simple, then add complexity
[0:57] * Guest5540 (debian-tor@openvpn/user/s7r) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[0:57] <ace_> therefore I wanted to download raspbian project. I thought that It was possible
[0:58] * Guest5540 (debian-tor@openvpn/user/s7r) has joined #raspbian
[0:58] <shiftplusone> it is... just not all at once
[0:58] <shiftplusone> unless you break into pluwash's house and steal all his equipment
[0:58] <ace_> :(
[1:00] * spinza (~spin@197.89.23.167) Quit (Excess Flood)
[1:01] <shiftplusone> having a clear goal could help... 'I want to add feature blah' is a good starting point
[1:01] <ace_> I am reading that Debian Jessy run in rpi 2
[1:01] <ace_> https://wiki.debian.org/RaspberryPi
[1:02] <ace_> shiftplusone, I would like to built a security OS for rpi
[1:02] <methuzla> ace_ read up on basic OS concepts: scheduler, context switching, IPC mechanisms, etc.
[1:02] <ace_> I read thats in a Tannenbaum book
[1:03] <methuzla> good start
[1:03] * Guest5540 (debian-tor@openvpn/user/s7r) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[1:04] <methuzla> next step would be to implement a VERY simple OS, nothing near as complex as linux
[1:04] * Guest5540 (debian-tor@openvpn/user/s7r) has joined #raspbian
[1:04] <ace_> I'm happy debian jessy run in rpi 2
[1:05] <ace_> I think that will facilitate the work
[1:06] <ace_> methuzla, I want to audit all minix3 when Minix will run in rpi
[1:06] <ace_> minix is little

[7:05] <Guest64352> Hi, I have question, when I download the Linux source from www.kernel.org, , does it has all the raspberry pi supported drivers code or we need to develop the drivers code.
[7:06] * skylite (~skylite@business-178-48-4-145.business.broadband.hu) has joined #raspbian
[7:06] <shiftplusone> somewhere in between
[7:07] <shiftplusone> more towards the end of having everything you need.
[7:07] * KushS (~kushagra@122.160.254.142) has joined #raspbian
[7:07] <shiftplusone> but I haven't had the need to run the upstream kernel
[7:08] <Guest64352> so you mean to say, we don't need to develop the drivers code when we get the kernel from kernel.org ?
[7:09] <shiftplusone> nope
[7:09] <shiftplusone> well... no you don't need to. yes, that's what I mean.

[7:11] <Guest64352> well, so all drivers code is available readymade in kernel, in that case where can i find the drivers source code for all raspberry pi peripherals. suppose if i wanto make some changes for sdcard driver, where can i find

[7:12] <shiftplusone> all the upstream pi stuff is usually called bcm2835* or bcm2836*
[7:12] <shiftplusone> (we use bcm2708/bcm2709)
[7:13] * ruben-ikmaak (~sikko@541F7D85.cm-5-8b.dynamic.ziggo.nl) has joined #raspbian

[7:19] <Guest64352> :shiftplusone, wes there any particular directory, where all peripherals drivers code available ?
[7:21] <shiftplusone> No, sticking everything like that in one location is a no-no.
[7:21] <shiftplusone> If another chip comes out using the same peripheral, you can specify that in device tree and it will 'just work', without having to duplicate code.
[7:21] <shiftplusone> So whatever driver you want to modify will belong in the place where the rest of the drivers for that type of peripheral are

[7:31] <shiftplusone> doesn't have to be like pi at all
[7:32] <shiftplusone> can be for normal PCI or usb devices you'd plug into a normal PC
[7:32] <Guest64352> ok, i see sdhci-s3c.c file also whats that ?
[7:33] <shiftplusone> S3C SDHCI platform specific driver
[7:33] <shiftplusone> some samsung thing
[7:33] <shiftplusone> ...you're not going down the list of all the files asking what they are, right?
[7:34] <Guest64352> hmmm. i got it now thanks alot shiftplusone

[7:43] <shiftplusone> yup
[7:43] <shiftplusone> and the really platform specific under arch/arm/mach-
[7:44] <shiftplusone> https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/tree/arch/arm/mach-bcm by the looks of it
[7:44] <Guest64352> perfect
[7:50] <Guest64352> was there any necessity to modify the platform specific drivers code under under arch/arm/mach- ?

[9:49] <shiftplusone> why would you install nvidia driver on banana pi?
[9:49] <pl7ofit> this is simple
[9:51] <pl7ofit> no i not install nvidia on banana, this analog primer slova zakonchilis'
[9:52] <shiftplusone> haven't had to fiddle with X for a long time, so don't know off the top of my head.

[9:53] <pl7ofit> <shiftplusone>, thx
[9:53] <pl7ofit> lordievader, yes
[9:53] <shiftplusone> but I believe nouveau is the reverse engineered alternative to nvidia's driver, so if you install nvidia driver and X is configured for nouveau, you'll have some trouble.
[9:54] <pl7ofit> lordievader http://pastebin.com/XYeKGjnu
[9:54] <lordievader> Hmm, that doesn't specify Nouveau... wonder why it wants it.

[9:57] <DexterF> I installed the ua-netinstaller, worked ok, but now on reboot gets no IP from the dhcp. ifconfig only shows loopback. does the minimal install from netinstaller not configure ethernet at all?
[9:58] <pl7ofit> <shiftplusone>, my trouble with banana pi + xorg + mali driver, and nouveau and nvidia only for exemple
[9:58] <shiftplusone> DexterF: it does

[10:01] <lordievader> pl7ofit: I don't see any problems? Nor any mention of Nouveau/Nvidia?
[10:01] <shiftplusone> ok, so it's expecting a lima_dri.so
[10:01] <shiftplusone> could use apt-file to find it
[10:02] <DexterF> well, bugger. what's wrong with the net then.
[10:03] <lordievader> DexterF: Does 'ip l' show it?

[10:04] <shiftplusone> DexterF: so you've used the card in another pi?
[10:05] <shiftplusone> that seems like persistent interface naming. So it saw that you have a different mac address and added an eth1, which isn't configured?

[21:49] <COdingFree> yes, i think so
[21:50] <TheLostAdmin> If you've confirmed that, then it should just be a matter of putting the SD card into the Raspberry Pi, plugging in keyboard and monitor (for the first boot) and plugging in power.
[21:50] <TheLostAdmin> That should get you to the Raspbian setup screen.

[21:55] <TheLostAdmin> Works without a hitch.
[21:56] <TheLostAdmin> Do make sure that the card is inserted all the way in on the Pi. The microSD slot has a spring to push it back out and it's got to go all the way in or it won't read properly.
