[0:00] <roycroft> it shows up
[0:00] <roycroft> but i'm setting a static ip
[0:00] <roycroft> so that's not the issue
[0:00] <roycroft> it's associating with the wlan that's the problem
[0:00] <roycroft> i'm getting the mac address of my ap right now
[0:01] <methuzla> it shows up, but is all the info as expected? inet addr, etc.?
[0:01] <roycroft> yes
[0:02] <methuzla> can you ping things on your lan?
[0:02] <roycroft> not with the pi
[0:02] <roycroft> let me clear something up to avoid perhaps, some simple questions
[0:02] <roycroft> i design fiber optic networks and wifi meshes for a living
[0:03] <roycroft> i know how to do basic troubleshooting like that
[0:03] <roycroft> my weakness is with linux/debian
[0:03] <roycroft> i come from a bsd world when it comes to unix-like oses
[0:03] <roycroft> and mainly work with fujitsu, cisco, juniper gear
[0:03] <methuzla> this help? https://wiki.debian.org/NetworkConfiguration
[0:03] <roycroft> my pi doesn't see the wifi network - that's the problem
[0:04] <roycroft> it sees several aps, but not mine
[0:04] <roycroft> why it doesn't i do not know
[0:04] <roycroft> because i'm about 1m away from the pi, typing on a macbook pro that is on the ap in question and has very strong signal
[0:05] * fred1807 (~fred1807@177.82.57.224) Quit (Quit: fred1807)
[0:05] <methuzla> also "man interfaces" on the pi
[0:06] <roycroft> yeah, i have that part down fine, thanks
[0:07] <roycroft> if "iwlist wlan0 scan" shows me a bunch of nearby wireless networks i should presume that means that the dongle is working ok and has a supported driver installed
[0:08] <roycroft> and if my ssid is not listed then it's not going to be able to associate with it
[0:08] <roycroft> it doesn't even matter at this point if i have my psk correct
[0:08] <roycroft> the scan shows all visible networks and their association parameters
[0:09] <roycroft> and it doesn't show mine
[0:09] <b00ger_daddy> is your access point broadcasting the ssid?
[0:09] <roycroft> no
[0:09] <roycroft> but i see other networks that don't broadcase
[0:09] <roycroft> broadcast
[0:10] <roycroft> that's why i got the mac address of my radio - iwlist scan shows the mac addresses
[0:10] <b00ger_daddy> how do you see other networks if they dont broadcast their ssids?
[0:10] <roycroft> it scans each channel and reports what it sees
[0:10] <roycroft> if it finds a mac address it reports that and as much information as it can glean about the network
[0:11] <roycroft> it doesn't need an ssid to know there's a network
[0:11] <roycroft> but you can't associate with it if you don't know the ssid
[0:11] <b00ger_daddy> and the pi cannot connect to the access point?
[0:11] <b00ger_daddy> anything in the logs?
[0:11] <roycroft> i won't say that it can't
[0:11] <roycroft> but i can say that it's not connecting
[0:12] <roycroft> and since i don't see it i don't think it will be able to until the network is somehow visible to it
[0:12] <roycroft> where would wlan association stuff be logged?
[0:12] <roycroft> /var/log/daemon.log?
[0:14] <roycroft> wpa_supplicant was logging there wheni was trying that
[0:14] <roycroft> i might try that again
[0:14] <methuzla> iwlist wlan0 scan only shows cached values, it doesn't actually initiate a scan
[0:14] <roycroft> and see if i can resolve its issues
[0:14] <b00ger_daddy> it might be in secure
[0:14] <roycroft> i should get a better display for debugging this
[0:14] <roycroft> i'm using my 55" tv, which has an hdmi port
[0:14] <roycroft> but it's so far away i can hardly read it :)
[0:16] <methuzla> if run as non-root
[0:16] <roycroft> i'm running as root
[0:17] <roycroft> i assumed i would need to do so
[0:17] <roycroft> and would be disappointed if i didn't

[0:58] <roycroft> aah, there we go
[0:58] <roycroft> i saw an example config that added "scan_ssid=1" to wpa_supplicant.conf
[0:59] <roycroft> i did that and everything was fine

[10:59] <chrislp> Hi, I don't know if it is the right place to ask, but is it possible to power up a Pi reliably using a 12v DC line?
[11:00] <ppq> sure, if you have something to make that 5 V
[11:00] <ppq> many possibilities there
[11:03] * thebiffman (~andreas@109.228.150.211) Quit (Quit: bye)
[11:03] <chrislp> wha about amps?
[11:04] <ppq> http://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/questions/7913/powering-a-pi-from-12v
[11:04] <ppq> just make sure your 12 V source can deliver enough power
[11:06] <ppq> check out the dx.com links there
[11:06] <ppq> those things look suitable
[11:07] <chrislp> ppq: I see. I'll look into that, thanks for the link!
[11:08] <ppq> :)
[11:10] <chrislp> ppq: Come to think of it, perhaps it might be better to use another solution. I'm gonna have the Pi with a camera module running in a trailer to monitor a horse. The 12v dc line is from a lamp. Perhaps another solution would be better? I mean, if somebody turns the car off, the power will go, potentially corrupting the SD card I think?
[11:14] <ppq> yes, you could use a powerbank that supports charging and discharging at the same time (not all of them do)
[11:14] <ppq> as a buffer

[11:20] <chrislp> ppq: That sounds like a pretty good solution actually!
[11:23] <chrislp> ppq: Last question :) Would it be possible to somehow use the GPIO's or something to detect whether the powerbank is discharging or charging? I'd like to send a shutdown signal when discharging
[11:24] * troyt (~troyt@c-24-10-220-108.hsd1.ut.comcast.net) has joined #raspbian
[11:27] <ppq> chrislp, you could gpio-read the voltage at the output of the "12 V to 5 V" thingy that is charging the powerbank (after stepping it down to 3.3 V, don't connect 5 V to GPIO!)
[11:28] <ppq> monitor it with a little program you write, so if it goes low, initiate shutdown
[11:28] <chrislp> ppq: Thats brilliant!
[11:29] <ppq> btw, i'm pretty sure something like that has been done before, so check the interwebs before doing any unnecessary work yourself ;)
[11:29] <chrislp> ppq: I've tried googling to no avail, but perhaps I need to upgrade my google-fu then

[11:32] <ppq> everything you want is included in laptops
[11:32] <ppq> so perhaps buy a used intel atom netbook with little battery capacity left
[11:33] <ppq> they are very cheap because they are too slow to work with them nowadays
[11:34] <ppq> set up some linux, use the integrated webcam, configure it to shut down on low battery

[11:34] <ppq> the power supplies for those often have 12 V output (check before buying anything specific)
[11:36] <ppq> asus eeepc for example often use 12 V input
[11:36] <appas> there are new, and even high capacity batteries for most/all (that i've looked for) netbooks (and laptops in general) on chinese sites like aliexpress
[11:36] <ppq> sure, if he needs that..

[22:22] <dougiel> but for some reason my gpio s do not respond... thought it was my probe drawing too much from the 1200mA supply so then just move fwd...
[22:22] <diederik> Azlux: raspbian itself has jessie pretty much since Debian released it. The problem with an official Jessie image is the raspberrypi.org packages aren't fully updated yet
[22:22] <dougiel> right with >>> GPIO.setup(22, GPIO.OUT)
[22:22] <dougiel> >>> GPIO.output(22, True)
[22:23] <dougiel> ?
[22:23] <methuzla> pretty much
[22:23] <methuzla> and maybe GPIO.setmode(GPIO.BCM)
[22:24] * Mr_Sheesh (~mr_s@unaffiliated/mr-sheesh/x-0757054) has joined #raspbian
[22:25] <dougiel> did that and import RPi.GPIO as GPIO
[22:25] <Azlux> dougiel: i ask because i need the new version of php and debian to update my website, diederik in this case it's better if I wait for the official version of jessie on rasberry ?
[22:26] <methuzla> Azlux i think you mean diederik
[22:27] <methuzla> dougiel and then you tried to measure the voltage with a probe or meter or something?
[22:27] <diederik> Azlux: make a backup of your sd card and try to upgrade. If it fails, you can restore your system from the backup and wait for the official version.
[22:28] <Azlux> :) It's a kind of solution
[22:28] <dougiel> metered it...
[22:28] <Azlux> i know my server will be broken with some update because i didn't make a good config will for every software
[22:29] <methuzla> dougiel and?
[22:30] <diederik> That kind of sounds like your system is already 'broken', but just waiting to fall over ...
[22:30] <dougiel> methuzla, my 3.3V and gpio22 are next to each other - can I safely short them together to get the 3.3V on that pin... metered and probed low
[22:32] <methuzla> dougiel maybe, but why? you should be metering between gnd and gpio22
[22:34] * Andocromn_ (~quassel@151.181.45.34) has joined #raspbian
[22:34] <dougiel> I did methuzla and metered and probed low... sec will get my arse down there and meter it again.
[22:34] <diederik> Azlux: what are you using your Pi for?
[22:35] <Azlux> dns,web,nodeJS,calendar/contact/owncloud server
[22:36] <diederik> Do you do everything through the CLI or do you use a GUI ?
[22:37] <Azlux> ssh \o/ no GUI for a real sysadmin :P

[22:39] <Azlux> diederik: i didn't know about this minimal version of raspbian thank
[22:39] <methuzla> "shorting them" what are you shorting?
[22:40] <diederik> It won't upgrade your current system, but you can install jessie easily that way (I do it all the time)
[22:40] <dougiel> gpio22 and 3.3V
[22:40] <Azlux> the system is about 20Mb only ?
[22:40] <Azlux> O.O
[22:41] <diederik> That's the installer. the installed system will be bigger ;)
[22:41] <Azlux> ho ok
[22:41] <methuzla> dougiel don't do that
[22:41] <Azlux> you afraid me for a while
[22:41] <diederik> if you create 'installer-config.txt' and put 'release=jessie' in there, it'll install jessie straight away
[22:42] <Azlux> thank for the tip
[22:42] <diederik> it's probably best to also add 'packages=libpam-systemd' in that file
[22:42] <Azlux> just realise the model of my rapbian it's an A+ if i have good memory
