[9:05] <yekKhaste> hi
[9:05] <yekKhaste> I want to use my rpi B+ as a network gateway and nfs
[9:06] <yekKhaste> So I look for a minimal linux base os
[9:06] <yekKhaste> I found arch
[9:07] <yekKhaste> is there any debian base(or raspbian base) os that came with minimal packages?
[9:07] <yekKhaste> Something like arch
[9:08] <yekKhaste> Performance is my main concern
[9:09] <lordievader> Network gateway ain't a good idea... 100 Mbit nic shared with the usb bus...
[9:10] * mildouze (~Icedove@AAmiens-156-1-88-232.w90-34.abo.wanadoo.fr) has joined #raspbian
[9:11] <yekKhaste> lordievader, I want to monitor my data usage and control each user bind-way, but my dsl model does not support OpenWRT, so this is my only way
[9:14] <lordievader> What I mean is, say someone is downloading a large file off of nfs, the rest of the users get a very slow internet connection.
[9:14] <lordievader> It would be somewhat better if it only played gateway. But even then you are facing the problem that you are having two interfaces on the same bus.
[9:15] <yekKhaste> lordievader, thanks, but in my case, I don't think that make any problem
[9:16] <yekKhaste> I don't plan for high internet speed or large files on nfs
[9:16] <yekKhaste> And now my first concern is which os should I use
[9:17] <lordievader> I'd go with Debian. You don't want to build stuff on a Pi.
[9:17] <yekKhaste> Is there any way that I can install debian minimal on my rpi?
[9:18] <lordievader> Err, I don't know.
[9:18] <yekKhaste> Now I'm using arch on my rpi and don't have any problem with install my own package
[9:18] <yekKhaste> but my problem with arch is it's rolling base
[9:19] <yekKhaste> So I don't think it would be a good idea to use it as a server distro
[9:20] <lordievader> yekKhaste: Doesn't that answer your question?
[9:21] <yekKhaste> yes, but still I'm worry about raspbian performance
[9:24] * Tach[Zzz] is now known as Tachyon`
[9:28] * infiniteNOP (~infiniteN@unaffiliated/infinitenop) Quit (Quit: Konversation terminated!)
[9:30] <lordievader> It's not raspbian you should worry about, it is the Pi's performance you should worry about.

[9:43] <stemid> anyone here managed to boot latest raspbian wheezy image in qemu with 512 m ram? it's a small detail but I am emulating a raspberry pi model b so shouldn't I be able to boot with 512 m of RAM? I am only able to boot qemu with 256. perhaps the kernel-qemu image is restricted to 256?

[13:48] <DK-HaZe> floris thats what I was thinking about, a program that can ban some of all those attempts
[13:49] <DK-HaZe> I'm just afraid something has gotten though cus yesterday it constantly threw invalid logins in my log but today there is nothing.
[13:50] <floris> DK-HaZe : yeah, now your hacked have a backdoor lol
[13:51] <DK-HaZe> serious?
[13:51] <DK-HaZe> I just reinstall the whole system :S
[13:52] <DK-HaZe> reinstalled
[13:52] <DK-HaZe> its fresh :S
[13:52] <floris> ah ok
[13:52] <DK-HaZe> should I reinstall again ?
[13:53] <DK-HaZe> did it yesterday but that doesn't help if something got though
[13:53] <floris> no lol
[13:53] <floris> to be sure, use tcpdump or wireshark on another computer :p

[13:54] <DK-HaZe> youve gotten me freaking nervous now :D
[13:59] <DK-HaZe> floris so i just look for ip's thats out of my network or how?
[14:02] <floris> dont worry if you have fresh install
[14:03] <DK-HaZe> it was yesterday and there was allot of attempts, but today nothing
[14:09] <diederik> DK-HaZe: There are a number of things you can do to make ssh more secure. Don't use/disable the pi user (which may bring other issues though). If you use user 'pi', you surely have changed the password, right? Disable password based ssh logins and use (ssh) keys
[14:12] <DK-HaZe> I have disabled root login though SSH and have passwords on everything, but I use pi as user :S
[14:14] <DK-HaZe> oh yes ofcause diederik its not standard passwd
[14:16] <diederik> Using user pi is understandable, disabling password login for pi (over ssh) will block any attempts immediately by 'hackers' ... and it's also faster and more secure
[14:19] <DK-HaZe> I need ssh on LAN but maybe I can remove the possibility to log on out side of the LAN, wont that help a great deal ?
[14:19] <DK-HaZe> if its possible
[14:19] * shootbird (~quassel@beepbeep.serverpit.com) has joined #raspbian
[14:20] <DK-HaZe> closing the ssh port should do it :)
[14:20] <DK-HaZe> dooh
[14:23] <diederik> That works. But you can also specify in your sshd config that only local/lan logins are allowed

[14:26] <DK-HaZe> yes, I was looking for that but thought that closing the port would be faster.. I just cant seem to understand what to look for in wireshark to identify if there is some back door open
[14:27] <DK-HaZe> theres a ton of Ip that is talking to my local PC's but I'm listening to online music, and I'm here on IRC
[14:27] <DK-HaZe> so its probably normal
[14:28] <diederik> I'm not very versed in wireshark, but the key is to create (multiple) filters

[14:30] <foormea> hi. i've got trouble with a fresh install of raspbian running 3.18.11+ to make my wifi dongle work, it's dwa-131 rev b1, uses module 8192cu. it associates with the AP but never ever connects
[14:31] <foormea> i'm reading stuff about flaky support with kernels 3.17 and 3.18. should i downgrade kernel?
[14:32] * gitup (~gitup@203-214-76-246.dyn.iinet.net.au) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[14:33] <diederik> DK-HaZe: IRC is probably communicating on a specific port, so creating a filter on that port would hide the IRC related traffic
[14:34] <DK-HaZe> oh like that, alright now I know what to read up on I better get to it before my whole network is one huge loop hole :)
[14:34] <diederik> But you'd have to read the man page or search the web as to how to (best) do it. I have very little experience with wireshark, partly because it's a bit complicated
[14:34] <DK-HaZe> a bit ? :)
[14:35] <DK-HaZe> I was lost when I opened the program :)
[14:35] <diederik> I know the feeling :-P
[14:35] <diederik> But do check your router configuration and only open ports that you need and close everything else.
[14:36] <diederik> Better to close the gate then having to check each door
[14:38] <DK-HaZe> I have just set up our router with the ports needed for apache server, transmission, everything else is closed, the ISP cant even connect to it now :)

[14:46] <foormea> diederik: i'm fairly new to raspberry/raspbian but i'm fairly familiar with linux/debian. i should never tinker with linux images/modules with raspbian, i should only use rpi-update, is that correct?
[14:47] * break3r (~wayne@x590d7b36.dyn.telefonica.de) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[14:47] <diederik> no, normally you shouldn't use rpi-update
[14:47] <diederik> (but in your case it seems warrented)
[14:48] <foormea> what confuses me is that i saw (i think?) no linux-image-whatever installed
[14:48] <foormea> i'll double check
[14:49] <diederik> and I see no reason why you shouldn't make your own kernel modules. Creating/using your own kernel is more daunting, but there is no rule or sth like that why you can't/shouldn't do that
[14:50] <diederik> in the default pi image it's indeed not installed, but it is available in the raspbian.org archives
[14:51] * spinza (~spin@197.89.23.10) Quit (Excess Flood)
[14:51] <foormea> do you know why it's marked as not installed, if it's obviously installed?
[14:51] <diederik> the raspbian-ua-netinst does install the raspbian.org kernel, via a linux-image-* package
[14:51] <foormea> i dd-ed the image onto the card
[14:52] <foormea> meh. i'll read up about it
[14:52] <diederik> there are 2 types of kernels for the pi, one by raspberrypi.org (in the raspberrypi-bootloader package) and a raspbian.org kernel, which you can install with a linux-image-* package
[14:52] <foormea> do you usually recommend using wicd or the good old wpasupplicant ?
[14:53] <diederik> the problem/issue with rpi-update is that it's not in a deb package at all, just downloaded from the internet and directly written to the system

[14:59] <diederik> I think ifplugd has something to do with it, but there are issues when using both at the same time. Haven't looked into it though
