[6:44] <ktwo> i dont get it, if im using the rpi-update kernel, is this still the correct repo for my kernelsource? https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux rpf-linux-kernel

[6:55] <diederik> yes, Hexxeh works for the raspberrypi foundation
[6:58] <ktwo> oh cool you are awake x) im have the feeling that something is not right with my kernel files
[6:58] <ktwo> i followed that guide but for example there is a point where it gets awkward
[6:58] <ktwo> git checkout -b rpi-bootloader-blabla <using my id>
[6:59] <ktwo> this does not work with the checked out repo from rpf-linux-kernel
[7:00] <diederik> https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=790803#p790803
[7:01] <diederik> ^^ that post has info that I need to incorporate in my article
[7:02] * teclo- (42@unaffiliated/teclo) Quit (Ping timeout: 255 seconds)
[7:02] <diederik> your branch name is incorrect, it should be rpi-4.1.y
[7:02] <ktwo> so in my case it downloaded master?

[7:04] <diederik> 'git checkout <commit-id>' should work
[7:05] <ktwo> the full commit id?
[7:05] <diederik> I better get my coffee first :-P
[7:06] <diederik> usually the first 7-9 chars are enough
[7:07] <diederik> can you pastebin 'git log -20 --oneline' ?
[7:08] <ktwo> http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=c4tZrNCN
[7:08] <ktwo> iit doesnt seem to have my commit
[7:08] * kuerbis (kuerbis@188-23-104-117.adsl.highway.telekom.at) has joined #raspbian
[7:09] <ktwo> ea072e1d615bbfeae5ad04f1c9367295dca84f06
[7:10] <diederik> that's not the commit id you should use, read the instructions carefully ;-)
[7:11] <diederik> hint: it's in the rpi-update section of Step 1
[7:11] <ktwo> eh why you said so yourself
[7:11] <ktwo> thtas the cat ... id
[7:11] <lordievader> Good morning.
[7:12] <ktwo> morning^^
[7:13] <lordievader> o/
[7:13] <diederik> There are 2 different commit ids that are relevant
[7:13] <ktwo> in that case the tutorial is misleading because i thought If-youre using rpi-update , everything before is irrelevant
[7:13] <diederik> I could tell you the answer, but then you'd be stuck the next time you need to compile your kernel module
[7:15] <diederik> http://pastebin.com/XH6SBzrC <-extract of the relevant part
[7:16] <diederik> the cat command gave you a commit id for the rpi-firmware repo, but you need a commit id for the raspberrypi/linux repo
[7:17] <ktwo> i got a suggestion, say click on the button with an '< >' icon:D
[7:17] <ktwo> i guess github users will know^^
[7:17] <ktwo> ok this is it: 4507c9752292506fa6ef136114ad14ffd92b2ca5
[7:18] <diederik> indeed
[7:18] <ktwo> yea now it works
[7:18] <diederik> now do the 'git checkout <commit-id>' thing with that commit id and that should work
[7:19] <ktwo> git checkout -b rpi-bootloader-4507c97 4507c97 this command changes the current branch?
[7:19] <ktwo> it was really fast, everything went ok?
[7:19] <diederik> yes
[7:19] * teclo- (42@unaffiliated/teclo) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[7:20] <diederik> I prefer to do my own stuff in a separate branch, so if you mess up, you can just delete your own branch and start over
[7:20] <ktwo> ah ok, but thats what ive done basically i guess using the -b parameter
[7:20] <ktwo> now lets see, doing the cleaning stuff and recompiling^^
[7:21] <diederik> indeed
[7:21] * teclo- (42@unaffiliated/teclo) has joined #raspbian
[7:22] <diederik> git's manpages are REALLY good, probably the best I've ever seen.
[7:23] <ktwo> to be honest id rather prefer a gui for it, im not anti-commandline but sometimes it would make things so much easier
[7:24] <diederik> me too, I use Konqueror for that on my normal PC (man:/git-checkout)
[7:25] <diederik> a lot of manpages can also be found online
[7:25] <diederik> http://manpages.debian.org/cgi-bin/man.cgi?query=git-checkout&apropos=0&sektion=0&manpath=Debian+8+jessie&format=html&locale=en
[7:25] <ktwo> from the hexxeh repo i basically need the one file Module.symvers right?
[7:25] <diederik> ^^ that's one
[7:25] <diederik> no the Module7.symvers
[7:26] <ktwo> right sorry yea i have already renamed it
[7:26] <diederik> (but save it as Module.symvers)

[7:28] <ktwo> how do maintainer do such things with drivers? do they really have to recompile drivers for each kernel release?
[7:29] <diederik> MrEngman from the raspberrypi forums 'maintains' drivers for some wireless modules ... and yes he does
[7:29] * Bribri is now known as Brybry
[7:30] <diederik> the debian/raspbian.org kernels have a kernel-headers package which is much more stable then the raspberrypi.org kernel, so that makes things easier
[7:30] <ktwo> so basically i shouldnt have done rpi-update
[7:30] <ktwo> i could still start from scratch xD
[7:31] <diederik> the best is a dkms driver package combined with the debian/raspbian.org kernel-headers, then the new module get compiled automatically for a new kernel
[7:31] <diederik> I suggest you keep on your current track now
[7:31] <diederik> it's a useful exersize ;-)
[7:32] <diederik> But tbh, running rpi-update is now deprecated
[7:32] * jteneyck (~jteneyck@unaffiliated/josephteneyck) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)

[7:35] <diederik> if it's not an 'exec format' error, you're at least making progress
[7:35] <ktwo> yea reboot and now stuck -.- xD
[7:37] <diederik> there was very little time between "doesn't look good" and reboot (which wasn't needed btw)
[7:37] * teclo- (42@unaffiliated/teclo) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[7:37] <ktwo> i just wanted to make sure , there was some segfault
[7:37] <ktwo> well after disconnecting the usb device it reboots again
[7:38] <diederik> segfault surely isn't good :-P
[7:39] <ktwo> now the segfault doesnt happen after modprobe but it doesnt finish^^
[7:39] <ktwo> maybe its just stuck in the console and i should have used & ?
[7:40] <ktwo> but iwconfig / ifconfig still no sign of new device
[7:40] <diederik> what do you mean by "doesn't finish"?
[7:40] <ktwo> it goes to the next line as if a program was running
[7:41] <ktwo> i thought this is a "fire and be forgotten" command
[7:41] <diederik> that usually means it was successful, you can check by 'lsmod'
[7:41] <diederik> it could very well be that you also need to have firmware
[7:41] * turtlehat (~filtered@94.191.188.82.bredband.3.dk) has joined #raspbian
[7:42] <ktwo> wtf lsmod hangs too
[7:42] <ktwo> time for reboot
[7:45] <ktwo> yea same story after modprobe , even lsmod hangs so there is someting seriously wrong i guess, the drivers are 2 years old .. ultimately i really cant expect them to work on 4.x
[7:45] <ktwo> the source code even metioned 2.6 kernel stuff
[7:45] <ktwo> im going to return this hellish device
[7:45] <diederik> that is likely the cause of your issues
[7:45] * teclo- (42@unaffiliated/teclo) has joined #raspbian
[7:46] <ktwo> i want to reinstall raspbian though now, i created a mess, if i run the noobs installer again, will i be on the kernel with headers?
[7:46] <ktwo> and then rpi-upgrade is deprecated and i should not use it right?
[7:46] <diederik> you could do a search on 'mt7610u' and see whether there are other driver sources (ie updated ones), but it could be a LONG ride (and may still fail)
[7:47] <diederik> no, you still won't have a kernel-headers package then
[7:47] <ktwo> whats the way then?^^
[7:48] <diederik> for kernel module compilation it doesn't really matter whether you're using rpi-update or use the kernel from the raspberrypi-bootloader package
[7:49] <diederik> the way for your wifi module is find sources which are compatible with new(er) kernels
[7:50] <diederik> sources means driver sources
[7:50] <ktwo> yea now forget the wifi thingie, lets assume i want a clean install of raspbian like it is recommended
[7:50] <ktwo> the newest (and not deprecated) way
[7:50] <ktwo> which method to install should i choose? its really confusing , there are like 6 images to choose
[7:50] <diederik> when you use noobs to get your raspbian system, you have the kernel from the raspberrypi-bootloader package and that's the recommended way/kernel
[7:51] <ktwo> ok then ill run that one again and dont do a rpi update
[7:51] <diederik> welcome to linux, where there's too much to choose :-P
[7:51] <ktwo> actually i had Archlinux ARM on my "old" box and found this surprisingly easy, but on the pi2 id rather not use it because i dont want to setup all the graphics stuff manually
[7:52] <ktwo> building a (different) wifi driver was really a piece of cake, followed an instruction line by line
[7:53] <ktwo> and also its nice to see all the differces between distributions so ill keep raspbian on this one
[7:54] <diederik> it's likely that the arch maintainers already had the driver sources (patched) for the relevant kernels
[7:55] * mildouze (~Icedove@AAmiens-156-1-83-14.w90-34.abo.wanadoo.fr) has joined #raspbian
[7:56] <ktwo> i really wonder how can a "big" name like mediatek still afford to not have drivers compiled with latest linux kernels
[7:56] <ktwo> hilarious
[7:56] <diederik> for https://github.com/diederikdehaas/rtl8812AU I've searched the internet a LOT to find the newest sources and then find various patches so it would work with newer kernels.
[7:56] <diederik> It was interesting, but very time consuming
[7:57] <diederik> it's rather pathetic how bad/unmaintained linux drivers are for most companies
[7:58] <diederik> it's best to research here: http://www.linux-hardware-guide.com/ before you buy a device (to run on linux)
[7:59] <ktwo> ill surely do this from this on. never trust amazon descriptions
[7:59] <ktwo> it even lists raspberry pi as supported os
[7:59] <diederik> that lines probably makes for a lot more sales
[8:00] * Tach[Zzz] is now known as Tachyon`
[8:01] <ktwo> http://www.amazon.de/CSL-IEEE802-11ac-Protected-Au%C3%9Fenreichweite-Windows/dp/B0141ARJIK -> it says also Ubuntu, i think i will try that on an x86 too to see if thats at least true
[8:02] <diederik> sounds like a good idea
[8:03] <diederik> the downside with linux drivers is that it needs to be compatible with a kernel version
[8:03] <diederik> the mediatek did have linux drivers, but for (by now) very old kernels
[8:04] * otter768 (~otter768@cpe-67-11-53-3.satx.res.rr.com) has joined #raspbian
[8:04] <ktwo> yea "we said ubuntu, we didnt say anthing about a recent ubuntu" :D
[8:04] <diederik> indeed
[8:07] <diederik> The ASUS ASB-AC56 should work fine on a Pi (and recent kernels)
[8:07] <diederik> s/ASB/USB/
[8:08] <diederik> then you can use drivers compiled for lots of kernels from MrEngMan (see earlier link to forum post)
[8:08] <ktwo> its a bit huge but i guess it doesnt matter
[8:08] <ktwo> i chose the small one since the router is 1m distance from it anyway
[8:09] * otter768 (~otter768@cpe-67-11-53-3.satx.res.rr.com) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[8:09] <diederik> there are also smaller ones which work fine
[8:09] <diederik> use the raspberrypi.org forums to check RPi 'compatibility'
[8:09] <ktwo> ultimately i must yet verify that its indeed faster than the 100m on it
[8:10] <ktwo> i tested to copy some files from USB hdd, and it had almost the aimed 30MB/s
[8:10] <ktwo> so a faster NIC should overcome the 11MB/s of a 100mbit nic
[8:11] <diederik> I remain sceptical that you will/could, but I'll gladly be proven wrong
[8:12] <ktwo> hopefully the next pi has gbit xD cant be so difficult^^
[8:12] <ktwo> doesnt the SOC even support it?
[8:12] <diederik> nope
[8:14] <diederik> lots of ppl hoped for gbit for the Pi2, but for that to happen they'd have to use various different components, which would make the hardware 'incompatible' with the Pi 1
[8:14] <ktwo> what would it change if it was hardware incompatible? dont we have to use different images anyway?
[8:15] <diederik> I don't know the details on that

[18:41] <holstein> im not following what "multiple files" means..
[18:42] <holstein> you mean, a playlist? should just stream that.. or, you mean, 2 videos at once? i would use seperate instances of vlc
[18:42] <rbckman> hello holstein
[18:42] <rbckman> yes
[18:42] <rbckman> many files
[18:42] <holstein> sure
[18:42] <holstein> so, can you do *one* file?
[18:42] <rbckman> yes
[18:42] <holstein> if not, you likely wont be able to do many..
[18:43] <rbckman> but omxplayer quits after the first one
[18:43] <rbckman> maybe its in vlc
[18:43] <holstein> sure.. isolate that out, and see
[18:43] <holstein> maybe its the client..
[18:44] <holstein> so, you have a lot of files in the que in vlc, you start a stream, connect with a client, and, when one file is done, you lose the stream? and you are assuming, this is server side with vlc? correct?
[18:45] <rbckman> it probably starts a new stream for every file.. even if the command --sout-keep should make the stream whole
[18:45] <rbckman> yes.. correct..
[18:45] <holstein> http://superuser.com/questions/50609/how-to-stream-multiple-files-on-demand-in-vlc could be --sout-keep is not supported in your version of vlc
[18:45] <holstein> no need to assume "probably starts a new stream for every file". test if it does, or not
[18:46] <rbckman> thanks holstein
[18:46] <holstein> i dont see it implemented like that..

[18:47] <holstein> i would remove the variables, if possible.. stream, even it its just locally, on the same PC, not the pi.. make sure you can continuously stream there..
[18:47] <rbckman> just did that

[18:48] <rbckman> streaming to vlc locally, it does continue playing
[18:48] <holstein> rbckman: cool.. so, now, you can ask in a VLC specific channel. what you are doing wrong, or, how to implment sout-keep
[18:48] <rbckman> but it might be that it only works with vlc
[18:49] <holstein> oh, i see.. it *does* work there..
[18:49] <holstein> i would expect the same server command to work for any client.. so, try another client, locally.. mess with the config til you get it working with another client locally
[18:49] <holstein> no need to through the pi in the mix, just yet..
[18:49] <rbckman> yep! thanks for your time holstein!
