[1:18] <NigMaster> I figured before I type lots of lines I'd check to see if I was talking to myself again first.
[1:18] <NigMaster> OK So here goes.
[1:19] <NigMaster> http://www.orangepi.org/orangepimini2/
[1:19] <NigMaster> Orange PI Mini 2

[1:25] <methuzla> pi has the best community support by far
[1:26] <methuzla> but pi may not be the "fastest" hardware-wise

[3:15] <NigMaster> OK. But Orange PI2 Mini seems to have much better hardware. Faster + more on board items liek IR etc.
[3:15] <NigMaster> AS far as software. Shouldn't it run the same installs?
[3:17] * hymen00 (~hymen00@172.56.31.88) has joined #raspbian
[3:17] <hymen00> an the rpi talk to other rs232 devices like routers natively?
[3:18] <PhotoJim> "natively"?
[3:18] <PhotoJim> the Pi does have a TTL serial port but it probably requires adaptation to work with standard RS232 devices
[3:18] <PhotoJim> and of course you can just use USB RS232 ports, as many as you want
[3:21] * darkbasic (~quassel@niko.linuxsystems.it) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[3:22] * darkbasic (~quassel@niko.linuxsystems.it) has joined #raspbian
[3:25] <hymen00> i have an old modem with a serial port and thought maybe the rpi could talk to it using its through the gpio serial ports
[3:28] * wastholm (~quassel@94.127.35.102.c.fiberdirekt.net) has joined #raspbian
[3:32] <methuzla> hymen00 TTL serial != RS232 serial, so can't be done with a simple straight wiring
[3:32] <PhotoJim> hymen00: I'd recommend a USB serial interface instead.
[3:32] <PhotoJim> hymen00: and the TTL serial port wouldn't support RTS/CTS, which you'd want if you're going to use a modem that runs at >2400 bps.
[3:34] <methuzla> NigMaster "Shouldn't it run the same installs?" <- same installs as what?
[3:51] <Tachyon`> most router serial ports are debug interfaces and TTL anyway
[3:51] <Tachyon`> additionally, I've done 38400 over TTL serial with no handshaking before, it can be done
[3:55] <PhotoJim> it can be done, you just risk dropping bits

[16:15] <niston> I ordered a RPi2 from farnell like a week ago
[16:15] <niston> paid for it by CC
[16:15] <niston> haven't heard from them ever since
[16:15] <shiftplusone> I was under the impression they don't charge your card until they ship it
[16:16] * noonker (~noonker@216.130.192.6) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[16:16] <niston> ah, I haven't checked if it's been charged
[16:16] <niston> probably could by now, there's always a huge delay with the online thing from the CC company
[16:17] <niston> ah, shiftplusone, check this: https://niston.wordpress.com/2015/10/03/new-home-theater/ :))
[16:18] <shiftplusone> fancy
[16:18] <niston> total cost under one grand :)
[16:19] <niston> tbh, with the black quart MBs, it came to exactly 1k
[16:19] <niston> but I already had them, bought them three years ago for CHF 50.00 - a steal
[16:20] <niston> so which TV did you end up with?
[16:21] <TheLostAdmin> I won't say it's better, but my home theatre setup cost well under $1000. Of course I did it by picking up the setup for the previous year when it went on clearance. It's somewhat old now.
[16:21] <niston> heh, I did something similar: bought everything off some ebay clone
[16:22] <TheLostAdmin> Mine is all Samsung (except the xbox360).
[16:22] <niston> have a mix there, Onkyo, Philips, Canton, Quart MB (as well as the xbox :)
[16:22] <TheLostAdmin> and the roku because the Samsung iptv stuff build into the blueray player sucks.
[16:23] <niston> yeah, same with Philip's "Net TV"
[16:23] <niston> I think all those "smart TV" services, they're all utter crap
[16:25] <TheLostAdmin> The good news (for some) is that there is a line of LG tvs that have the roku built in as the IP tv. Also I've heard that Apple is working to integrate the Apple Tv (for those who like apple) and similarly the chromecast for those who prefer google.
[16:25] * niston doesn't really care - I never watch TV
[16:26] * diederik (~quassel@dhcp-077-251-173-228.chello.nl) Quit (Ping timeout: 255 seconds)
[16:26] <TheLostAdmin> Then you should like the Apple TV even more since you can push your desktop screen to the TV for gaming.
[16:26] <TheLostAdmin> well, okay gaming sucks that way on many levels.
[16:26] <niston> TV programming these days is the worst
[16:26] <niston> hmm not much of a gamer either
[16:26] <niston> xbox was just for GTA V
[16:27] <TheLostAdmin> and yet you have a home theatre setup?
[16:27] <niston> I have one of those USB graphics cards though, for watching movies/streams from PC
[16:27] <niston> yeah
[16:27] <niston> I <3 movies
[16:27] * diederik (~quassel@dhcp-077-251-173-228.chello.nl) has joined #raspbian
[16:27] <TheLostAdmin> Oh. Well, my (possibly not standard) definition of TV includes netflix and friends, movie libraries, and console gaming.
[16:28] <TheLostAdmin> cable or over-the-air is just one possibility.
[16:28] <niston> ah, I mean the public stations by TV
[16:28] <TheLostAdmin> I'm also thinking it's time to add in some sort of lightweight computing (like web browsing and e-mail) to my definition given the way things are going.
[16:28] * wastholm (~quassel@c83-250-208-19.bredband.comhem.se) has joined #raspbian
[16:29] <niston> ya, however depends on preferences
[16:29] <niston> I'd rather use the PC for stuff like that
[16:30] <TheLostAdmin> me too, but I'm seeing those sorts of "it's almost a computer but for your tv" devices showing up around the edges of mainstream electronics stores.
[16:30] <niston> yup
[16:30] <TheLostAdmin> again, that is. (saw some of them show up and fail in the 90's).
[16:30] <niston> like those android hdmi sticks
[16:31] <niston> might be alright for ppl who don't want/have a computer but like to use email
[16:31] <TheLostAdmin> yep. Although I generally gage things by how Bestbuy advertises them. If Bestbuy is calling it a thing for your livingroom, it's gone mainstream.
[16:32] <TheLostAdmin> it can also be useful depending on how your home is laid out. if your computer/home office is in the basement and you are in the living room, a quick check of e-mail using the TV (because your cell phone is charging) might be handy.
[16:34] * bigmac (~bigmac@71-35-154-128.tukw.qwest.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[16:34] <niston> ture
[16:34] <niston> err
[16:34] <niston> true
[16:34] <niston> but it better be quick then
[16:35] <niston> I mean, for example my TV, the web stuff is SO AWFULLY FREAKING SLOW
[16:35] <niston> you could probably drive to the store and buy groceries by the time it takes to even open the browser (with a bit of exxageration)
[16:36] <TheLostAdmin> that's less the TV and more the computer being used. An RPi 2 is pretty speedy compared to a Roku.
[16:36] <niston> so its all quite impractical, imho
[16:37] <niston> certainly, but I was referring to the built-in-smart-stuff-TVs
[16:37] <TheLostAdmin> ya.
[16:39] <SeeM2> niston: and it will be only worse. In 2017 web sites will be twice more cpu-hungry.
[16:40] <SeeM2> changing pi2 connected to a tv for pi3 is trivial. Changing cpu and adding ram to a tv motherboard? Not so much.
[16:41] <niston> yeah
[16:42] <niston> although, TV manufacturers *could* put a SODIMM slot for a RPi Compute Module :)

[19:46] <Getty> actually talking from pain, cause the current laptop i use has such a problem with linux that any default kernel doesnt boot up at all hanging it up on the mouse, so i already said "fuck it" there ;)

[19:52] <ppq> Getty, just look up the components, like wifi chip, sound, graphics, bluetooth, etc. and check for their linux support. the rest should work anyway
[19:52] * vagrantc actually finds offtopic less distracting when it's interspersed with on-topic
[19:53] <vagrantc> Getty: i see no reason for the dozens of channels i'm watching to be constantly inundated with offtopic traffic.
[19:53] <Getty> ppq: yeah thats what i do right now, but its soooo annoying
[19:53] <vagrantc> Getty: if you feel like that's a waste of this channel, meh.
[19:53] <Getty> vagrantc: noone forces you to instantly jump in, dont use IRC as distractor, thats like a classic mistake in my eyes
[19:53] <Getty> its not XMPP
[19:53] <at0m> vagrantc: but Getty wants us to guess his distro, laptop model and support it
[19:54] <Getty> at0m: none of that

[19:55] <at0m> i know some distro channels like to smash people. wrong distro then.
[19:55] <Getty> at0m: you .... did it here..... right now..... some seconds ago ;)

[19:56] * vagrantc finds competent people tend to get annoyed at channels that are largely offtopic
[19:57] <vagrantc> or constant streams of chatter
[19:57] <Getty> if you say so ;)
[19:57] <vagrantc> thankfully, this hasn't devolved into that yet
[19:57] <Getty> i... have 100% other around data ;)
