[0:09] <Blakes5> Hey hey, I just received a Raspberry Pi Zero. It boots to OS but I'll be damned if I can get a keyboard or a mouse to work with it. Any suggestions? Running Raspbian Jessie 03-18-2016.
[0:11] <Blakes5> I plugged it up to my Linux USB using the USB labeled port, no SD or HDMI connected. It will list as a USB hub. So, I'm going to assume USB is working on it.
[0:12] <Blakes5> Soo quiet in here....

[0:26] <spaceman_> Could anyone help me with a problem I am having?
[0:26] <spaceman_> I cannot seem to get my DSLR camera to work with libgphoto2
[0:27] <klem> Blakes5, do your keyboard or mouse light up at all?
[0:28] <Blakes5> klem they do not.
[0:29] <klem> do you have any video out? HDMI or Comp?
[0:30] <Blakes5> klem I've read that it might require a firmware update. I'm not sure but if I understand what I've read so far, the version of raspian is the firmware?
[0:31] * johnnyfive (~johnnyfiv@unaffiliated/isalive) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[0:31] <Blakes5> Klem or do you think using an older version of raspian would work?
[0:31] <klem> I don't know, I've not personally played with Zeros yet. I'm just trying to fiugre out if it boots
[0:32] <Blakes5> Klem yeah it boots to a GUI OS. I'm not seeing errors when it boots. And when I connected to my PC using the USB labeled port with no SD card, the PC reads it as a usb hub so I think we can assume USB is working on the Pi.
[0:33] <klem> So you have it hooked to a monitor of some sort and have actually seen the GUI? have you tried using a powered USB hub to attach the keyboard and mouse?
[0:33] <Blakes5> I think I'll try a different version of raspian. I mean, really, it's the only possible solution since there isn't anything to "tweak" on the board and I don't have any input atm, not like I can go tooling around in conf files.
[0:33] <Blakes5> Klem yes.
[0:34] <klem> and you've tried the K-board and Mouse with that hub on another PC?
[0:34] * linkedinyou (~linkediny@unaffiliated/linkedinyou) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[0:34] <Blakes5> Klem I've tried the keyboard connected directly. I've tried it with a powered USB hub that is ancient & USB 2.0 so it should work.
[0:35] <Blakes5> Klem yes, all hardware is known working.
[0:36] <klem> does the shift-lock light come on momentarily as the Pi is booting? If not the K-board is not initiallizing at boot
[0:36] <Blakes5> No. And pressing caps lock doesn't light up the indicator either.
[0:37] * bobbySmurda (~bobbySmur@ool-44c43213.dyn.optonline.net) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[0:39] <klem> I am suspicious of either your micro usb to usb-a cable or your usb hub.

[0:40] * RockKeyman (~RockKeyma@net-2-33-19-183.cust.dsl.teletu.it) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[0:41] <klem> have you tried plugging either the mouse or the keyboard directly into the micro-usb to usb-a cable without the hub?
[0:42] <klem> These things (RPi-s in general) don't offer much current out of the USB....its a good idea to have anything you plug in pretty much capable of self-powering
[0:42] * Space (60f5b4e7@gateway/web/freenode/ip.96.245.180.231) has joined #raspbian
[0:43] <Space> Could someone help me out with some dependencies I am trying to install?
[0:43] * Space is now known as Guest16737
[0:43] <Guest16737> I have trouble with libgphoto2 finding my camera even though it recognizes it
[0:44] * c-pin (~cwalk@2601:c9:8000:3b20:2025:6b6f:aed8:3056) has joined #raspbian
[0:44] <c-pin> ok so i changed my hdmi to have sound through the config.txt
[0:44] <c-pin> is that to be patched in a pizero edition of raspbian or msomething?
[0:44] <Blakes5> I've connected the keyboard directly to the pi using the micro conversion cable. I've connected it via the hub then to the pi. And I've connected the pi to my pc using the micro converter cable that came with the pi. The PC will detect the pi as a hub. So, I believe it is not a cable issue.
[0:46] <klem> I've never hooked a pi to a PC like that.....
[0:46] * jazzzu (~jazoja@D97B7B1C.cm-3-4b.dynamic.ziggo.nl) Quit (Ping timeout: 268 seconds)
[0:47] <Blakes5> If you use the port that's labeled USB on the pi zero and connect it to a PC, if it's working, will list as a new USB hub.
[0:47] <klem> OK Blakes5, I guess another distro is as good a thing to try as anything
[0:48] <Blakes5> klem would you happen to know where I can find a different version because I'm looking at the site, and only the image I've already downloaded is available and it doesn't appear anything else is available at the two mirrors I've gone through so far.
[0:49] <Blakes5> nvm I think I just hit pay dirt.
[0:49] <klem> https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/ I see noobs and raspbian
[0:49] <Blakes5> http://downloads.raspberrypi.org/raspbian/images/
[0:49] * jdawgaz (~Jerry@ip70-176-27-239.ph.ph.cox.net) has joined #raspbian
[0:49] <c-pin> wait so if i use a pi zero and hook it yo my pc i can use the pc as a hub?
[0:50] <klem> I don't think so C-pin. its just seeing the USB port chip in the pi as a hub
[0:50] <c-pin> ah got it
[0:50] <c-pin> whats the issue hes having?
[0:51] <klem> no k-board, no mouse
[0:51] <Blakes5> c-pin no since there are no other usb ports on the device that will accept input. But the hardware is in the pi zero to appear as a hub.....it's for testing if the usb is working....something I read while troubleshooting this keyboard issue.
[0:51] <c-pin> aaah. i ended up just buying a k400 plsu
[0:51] <c-pin> plus*
[0:51] <c-pin> couldnt get my hub to work
[0:51] <Blakes5> c-pin I have a known working K400 right here....neither that nor a generic usb keyboard works, nor a usb mouse or my usb trackman.
[0:52] <c-pin> do you have an otg cable?
[0:52] <klem> Yeah RPi-s can be touchy about hubs and stuff because there isn't a lot of current available to drive stuff, you've got to use a decent powered hub
[0:52] <Blakes5> I bought the starter pack, all cables came from adafruit
[0:52] <c-pin> lol i tried powering the hub and it fried
[0:52] <c-pin> oh i just got the card and a otg cable from my phone
[0:53] <c-pin> ...then an mhdmi adapter, then a hdmi to vga with sound, then the keyboard and yada yada yada
[0:53] <Blakes5> c-pin it was the only way I could get my hands on a pi zero....sure they're only $5 for the board...good luck finding it.
[0:53] <c-pin> went to microcenter
[0:54] <Blakes5> I'd rather pay adafruit $30 for the board plus stuff than ebay scalpers $30 just for the board.
[0:54] <c-pin> this is true
[0:54] <Blakes5> I've been looking for 3 months. Finally got tired of waiting and saw they had some in stock for the starter kit.
[0:54] <c-pin> idk it was on the way to buble tea, the board was 5 bucks, plenty in stock, got some cherry soda, all was good
[0:55] <Blakes5> I don't have a MC where I'm at and last I checked their site listed it as out of stock. *shrugs*
[0:55] <c-pin> they had it in-store for us
[0:55] <Blakes5> I feel cheated!
[0:56] <c-pin> geez. mfw we have a microcenter next to a frys next to a tea shop, next to a comic book store, next to a board and card game store, next to a laser tag, next to a record shop
[0:56] <c-pin> basically heaven
[0:56] <Blakes5> The geekatude is strong there.

[0:56] <c-pin> eeyup. no idea why, it's in the middle of the asian part of town
[0:57] <klem> .....right next to a bunch of Californians. I'll stay where I'm at thank you.
[0:57] <c-pin> klem east coast
[0:57] <c-pin> however i think you can drive to cali and get weed if you wanna deal here.
[0:57] <klem> And that's better?
[0:57] <c-pin> i guess.
[0:57] <Blakes5> Speaking of geekatude. I can't wait to get my printer working again and print out a case for my pi zero :)
[0:57] <c-pin> wow you have a 3d printer?
[0:58] <Blakes5> Hell yeah!
[0:59] <Blakes5> Waiting to get some motor dampers and flex couplers to install before I print anything else. I seem to have introduced some Z axis banding. The only way to fix it is to doing a bunch of guess work or install dampers so it's down until I get the items I ordered.
[1:00] <Blakes5> Which I was going to install anyway...so why waste a lot of effort?
[1:01] <peawormsworth> Is the Pi 2 and 3 compatible with the B+?
[1:01] <Blakes5> And the pi I'm going to set up as a server for the printer so I can move it into my garage while still being able to monitor it from the comfort of my computer room.
[1:02] <peawormsworth> Can I simply take a working SD card from a B+ and put it into say a Pi 3... and everything just works the same but faster?
[1:02] * jdawgaz (~Jerry@ip70-176-27-239.ph.ph.cox.net) Quit (Quit: My Mac has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…)
[1:03] <Blakes5> Peawormsworth I believe you can since there is technically no "installation" of the OS, you're just running an image.
[1:04] <Blakes5> If there are any hardware differences requiring different drivers those drivers should already be in the OS image. The OS will figure out what it needs to run.
[1:04] <Blakes5> The only thing you need to make sure is if the image you have supports both units.
[1:05] <peawormsworth> raspian lite
[1:05] <Blakes5> IDK man, I've been involved in Raspbian for about 4 hours.

[9:21] <hez> Hey all, can anyone point me towrds the best way to do I2C comms on the pi? I have a custom AVR slave that I send a command to in order to set up a return string. The slave polls the I2C, so when it is addressed or recieves data, it just holds the SCL low until it gets around to handling it. Currently I am using the write system call to write several bytes, which instructs the slave what to
[9:21] <hez> put in the output buffer. I then use read() to read the nubmer of bytes that I want. However if i do not put a delay (>500us) between the write and read, I read nothing. It seems that it is trying to move on to read before it has actually finished the write operation. Does clock stretching work with write() and read() calls?

[16:31] <bobby23> is that a bad idea
[16:31] <Blakes5> In most cases yes. In this case, I don't believe so.

[22:46] <jonathanleung> Hello! I'm trying to turn my Raspberry Pi into a Wi-Fi router that serves a static HTML file.
[22:46] <jonathanleung> I've tried following this tutorial (http://andrewmichaelsmith.com/2013/08/raspberry-pi-wi-fi-honeypot/) but the Wi-Fi network wasn't found by any devices (so I'm assuming it didn't work)
[22:47] <jonathanleung> Having followed this tutorial earlier to learn how to configure the Pi as a normal router (http://raspberrypihq.com/how-to-turn-a-raspberry-pi-into-a-wifi-router/), the Wi-Fi network was displayed.
[22:47] <jonathanleung> I assume that this was an issue with hostapd and my Wi-Fi card
[22:48] <jonathanleung> And so I installed this: https://github.com/jenssegers/RTL8188-hostapd/archive/v1.1.tar.gz
[22:49] <jonathanleung> Now the Wi-Fi network is shwoing
