[4:46] * smokeo (~smokeo@207.219.39.95) has joined #raspbian
[4:47] <lyxus> Hello Folks, I am looking to get my rasberry pi working on a unix OS. I don't need a GUI, is there a reason why to use raspbian or snappy (please no anger, just want to know)
[4:47] <wbill> the one that has the shortcut for term and the wolfram apps
[4:50] <binaryhermit> technically, linux isn't unix :P
[4:50] <binaryhermit> but it's a unix clone, so probably close enough
[4:50] <binaryhermit> IIRC the only unix in current development is OSX
[4:51] * binaryhermit is wrong
[4:52] <binaryhermit> and pedantic
[4:52] <binaryhermit> though there is a distro that's actually unix
[4:53] <lyxus> :)
[4:53] <wbill> anyone know howto add apps to the top bar in rasp?

[4:54] <binaryhermit> As far as I can tell, the issue is that nobody's bothered to actually take the necessary steps to get most distros certified, as there's very little actual benefit to getting to call your OS Unix in most cases
[4:54] * Mia (~Mia@unaffiliated/mia) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)

[5:18] <mi11k1> wbill: what top bar?
[5:18] <mi11k1> did you unlock it? are you talking about mate?
[5:18] <wbill> th top bar that when you first load raspbian
[5:19] <mi11k1> umm, i dont actually use raspbian, i use minibian which is a modded raspbian
[5:19] <wbill> it has the term app shortcut and wolfram app shortcuts on it and the web browser shortcut i accidentally removed it
[5:19] <mi11k1> just drag it from the menu
[5:20] <wbill> now the right side apps are smashed into the menu bar on the left side
[5:20] <mi11k1> hold the mouse button for a sec before you start to drag
[5:20] * doed (~doed@2a02:810d:d00:10d8:896c:a3f5:be8c:d130) has joined #raspbian
[5:20] <mi11k1> what desktop environment? ,sounds like lxde or something
[5:20] <wbill> i did cant drag just goes right back to the menu it came from
[5:21] <mi11k1> then right click the bar
[5:21] <mi11k1> and unlock it
[5:21] <wbill> whatever comes withJessie Raspbian
[5:22] <wbill> no such animal as unlock when i rightclick i removed the whole bar i guess i cant drg shortscuts to the top bar at all
[5:22] <mi11k1> then something elsae must be wrong
[5:22] <mi11k1> it wont just delete the bar i dont think by right clicking
[5:23] <wbill> no i told it to i was trying to get rid of the wolfram app shorts
[5:23] <wbill> i thought it was just for the app itself it took the whole bar away
[5:24] <mi11k1> under system what does it say? i gotta figure out what desktop that is
[5:24] <wbill> under system?
[5:24] <mi11k1> oh, default is lxde i think
[5:24] * doed (~doed@2a02:810d:d00:10d8:896c:a3f5:be8c:d130) Quit (Ping timeout: 260 seconds)
[5:25] <wbill> yea thats what it is if i remember from reading it

[5:26] * denningsrogue (~denningsr@192.175.94.110) Quit (Quit: Textual IRC Client: www.textualapp.com)
[5:26] <mi11k1> to mod the bars in lxde theres a window that will let you add and delete stuff, and you need to move the order of the listing to arrange the bar
[5:27] <mi11k1> i think its kind of a pain in the ass
[5:27] <wbill> how do i get to the window
[5:27] <mi11k1> i dunno, lemme see if i got lxde on something here
[5:29] <mi11k1> gimme a sec, im installing it on a vm
[5:30] <mi11k1> what rpi is it? 2, 3?

[5:38] <wbill> how do i remove dhcp cache for static ip setup
[5:39] <mi11k1> im not sure what you mean
[5:40] <wbill> the dhcp cache ip assigned by my dhcp router
[5:40] <mi11k1> modify /etc/network/interfaces
[5:40] <mi11k1> unless you wanna use network-manager
[5:40] <wbill> i did that to static and th adress subnet mask etc
[5:41] <mi11k1> so whats the problem?
[5:41] <wbill> still sees the old ip
[5:41] <wbill> and i cold booted
[5:41] <mi11k1> restart it
[5:41] <mi11k1> did you do auto eth0?
[5:41] <wbill> maybe its on the router ill have to reboot it or something
[5:42] <wbill> let me chk
[5:44] <mi11k1> should be like this http://paste.ubuntu.com/16372491/
[5:44] <wbill> iface eth0 inet static
[5:45] <wbill> k
[5:45] <mi11k1> then service network-manager restart
[5:45] <mi11k1> then maybe ifdown eth0 then ifup eth0
[5:46] <mi11k1> then ifconfig should tell you what is what
[5:46] <wbill> ok that worked tyvm

[6:47] <mi11k1> adduser whoever
[6:47] <mi11k1> it will prompt u for a password to use
[6:47] <mi11k1> and make a folder in /home
[6:48] <mi11k1> if you do useradd, you need to make a password and create a home folder manually
[6:48] <mi11k1> by doing, passwd whoever
[6:49] <mi11k1> then usermod -d /path/to/wherever whoever
[6:49] <mi11k1> i think
[6:49] <mi11k1> just do adduser, its much easier
[6:51] <mi11k1> i think youre going to have a lot of fun on your travels with that pi
[6:51] <Lartza> useradd can create the home folder just fine

[14:30] <salviaD> the raspbian download is the same for both raspberry 1 and 3 ??
[14:32] <shiftplusone> yup
[14:34] <salviaD> ok, but If I boot the same SD card/system I am using on a B+model right now, on my newest pi3, it will BOOT, fine.. But Will it be using the arm7 specs or pi3will "emulate" pi1 spec?
[14:35] * c-pin (~c-pin@c-73-207-37-170.hsd1.ga.comcast.net) has joined #raspbian
[14:40] <shiftplusone> Not sure what you mean by 'emulate' or 'specs' in this context. armv7 can run armv6 instructions.
[14:41] <shiftplusone> And if it was all armv7, there wouldn't be any real performance increase in most cases, so it's nicer to have one image for all models.
[14:42] <shiftplusone> In the cases where you do see a performance increase (mostly NEON accelerated codecs), there are armv7 binaries which raspbian uses.
[14:47] <plugwash> shiftplusone, any ETA on improving the foundation kernel/firmware packaging and/or on updating the packaged foundation kernel to 4.4 ?

[14:48] <plugwash> for both?
[14:49] <shiftplusone> well, depends on what you mean by 'improving'. I've done what I wanted to do, but I am not sure if it's an improvement over just downloading the kernel from github.
[14:50] <shiftplusone> dpkg is awful when you have many small files in a package.
[14:50] * Mr-G (~Mr-G@2a01:7c8:aab3:587::2) has joined #raspbian
[14:51] <shiftplusone> I've profiled it and spends most of the time getting the md5 digest for each file =/
[14:53] <plugwash> sorry by improving I was talking about providing proper kernel headers, providing a source package (ideally which the kernel is actually built from but at least that contains the source for the kernel), splitting kernel and firmware into seperate packages etc
[14:54] <shiftplusone> kernel headers, split kernel and firmware, but no proper source package.
[14:58] <plugwash> can you at least provide a source package that contains the corresponding source even if you don't actually compile the kernel as part of the package build

[16:01] <victor_tlm> well I'm trying to install a SHIELD into the raspberry
[16:01] <victor_tlm> but it's an Arduino one working on SPI
[16:03] <methuzla> what shield?
[16:04] <shiftplusone> keep in mind arduino stuff is designed for 5v and the pi's gpio pins are not 5v tolerant.
[16:04] <methuzla> yep
[16:06] <victor_tlm> yeah I don't have any trouble with that cuz I'm using an Xbee shield
[16:06] <victor_tlm> so tecnically is mounted like if it were on an original arduino
[16:07] <victor_tlm> I don't know how's SPI working into a Raspberry

[16:17] <victor_tlm> "/dev/spidev0.0 doesn't exist"
[16:17] <methuzla> you need to enable kernel module for spi
[16:17] <victor_tlm> and for additional information I'm already using another SPI module with an Adafruit TFT shiled
[16:18] <victor_tlm> and yeah I already enabled spi with raspi-config

[18:26] <vagrantc> why run raspbian on an orange pi? it can just run debian with the same if not less manual configuration
[18:27] <plugwash> What is installed by default is up to whoever built the image, so is the default username setup.
[18:27] <Ingvix> hmm okay
[18:28] <fred1807> I found that when my Pi is connected to the ethernet cable, there are some small audio gaps/buffer underruns during omxplayer playing of movies, every ~4 minutos or so. Something that does not happens when the pi is not connected. Now I wonder could it be some service? My system is raspbian lite, almost vanilla, I am running omxplyer from bash scrip to load folder... so simple :/
[18:28] <plugwash> vagrantc, i've often wondered that myself, why do so many armv7 SBC vendors use raspbian.........
[18:28] * plugwash suspects because they don't really know what they are doing
[18:28] <Ingvix> vagrantc, I just thought it would be more fitting cause, I don't know, it's named raspbian and orange pi is raspberry clone
[18:29] <Ingvix> I could always install debian if it's somehow more convenient
[18:31] <Ingvix> can I do necessary preparations to the iso with virtualbox or something and install that to the pi?
[18:31] <Ingvix> img I mean
[18:31] <Ingvix> or what ever it is
[18:32] <vagrantc> plugwash: yeah, i do worry that's the bulk of it
[18:33] * InfoTest (~Thunderbi@tgn.188.54.107.dts.mg) Quit (Quit: InfoTest)
[18:33] <vagrantc> that said, it's a bit of a manual process to install a board with debian that isn't supported out of the box, if you're used to using images
[18:38] <Ingvix> well there is reade made debian 8 with xfce image available at least for orange pi at their site
[18:38] <Ingvix> ready*
[18:40] <plugwash> vagrantc, sure but building a Debian image for a new board isn't much different from building a Raspbian one
[18:40] <plugwash> and yet loads of boards seem to end up with the latter for no good reason
[18:42] <Ingvix> so is there really any reason that one would prefer raspbian over debian
[18:42] <Ingvix> I have no experience of either one
[18:42] <Ingvix> except the login screen of raspbian for now
[18:45] <vagrantc> Ingvix: if you want it to run slower
[18:45] <vagrantc> though the difference is probably almost imperceptible

[18:45] <Ingvix> interesting
[18:47] <vagrantc> Ingvix: raspbian is basically a rebuild of debian's armhf port, but with ARMv6 instead of ARMv7 ... so you miss out on some of the ARMv7 features.
[18:48] <Ingvix> okay, I might go with debian then
[18:49] <Ingvix> now, I'm pretty much using it as a server so would it be best to have debian without any desktop
