[0:19] <cwong2012> Saishokara: its a linux system. the base utils
[0:19] <cwong2012> you install what you need as you go.
[0:20] <plugwash> raspbian itself doesn't really (other than the really basic stuff that can't really be avoided on any debian based system), the programs included are chosen by whoever created the image you are using
[0:21] <Saishokara> where is a good place i can download more applications?
[0:21] <plugwash> the foundation image has quite a bit of stuff on it including LXDE, scratch, python etc, I don't have a full list to hand though.
[0:21] <cwong2012> Saishokara: via apt-get
[0:22] <cwong2012> Saishokara: have you used debian before? just try apt-cache search <programname or similar term>. like apt-cache search mail
[0:22] <dipstick> what does it mean if you get direct contunity through an ohm meter between 5v and gnd?
[0:22] <Saishokara> i would like to get some basic word processor, will it be included, or is it something i have to download
[0:23] <Saishokara> no, i am familiar with basics on linux, but i have never used debian
[0:24] <cwong2012> Saishokara: unfortunately i dont use word processor programs, but theres abiword. apt-cache search abiword, if you want to install and try it. apt-get install abiword
[0:24] * libto (~libto@essn-4d09e957.pool.mediaWays.net) has joined #raspbian
[0:24] <ParkerR_> libreoffice
[0:25] <Saishokara> can u use libre office?
[0:25] <ParkerR_> Will be really slow though. Running X and that will take a bit of CPU
[0:25] <cwong2012> $ apt-cache search leafpad
[0:25] <cwong2012> leafpad - GTK+ based simple text editor
[0:25] <cwong2012> this one is like notepad on windows.
[0:25] <cwong2012> but if you want fancy programs. abiword is pretty basic for that.
[0:25] <Saishokara> ohkay. im just trying to get to know what i get with this computer.
[0:26] <Saishokara> does docs wrok?
[0:26] <plugwash> libreoffice is available and apparently it runs, how much of a masochist you have to be to use it I don't know
[0:26] <cwong2012> if you do the netinstall. you dont get much out of the box. (=
[0:26] <ParkerR_> <3 the netinstall

[6:01] <gnarface> roasted: ubuntu inherits that functionality from debian i believe and therefore raspbian should have it available as well. raspbian is more similar to debian than ubuntu is though, which is probably why its not on by default in either.

[17:33] <pa> hi
[17:33] <pa> short tutorial to get latest raspbian onto an SD card? :)
[17:34] <cwong2012> http://www.raspbian.org/RaspbianInstaller
[17:34] <srg> dd bs=2M if=raspbian.img of=/dev/da0 (or something similar to that)
[17:34] <pa> does it go on FAT32?
[17:36] <srg> pa: the image handles all that itself.
[17:36] <srg> I think the boot partition is fat32 but the rest is ext
[17:36] <srg> something like that
[17:38] <pa> ah ok
[17:38] <pa> thnaks :)

[17:44] <pa> ok, i didnt know it was so slow.
[17:44] <pa> is it easy to install raspbian on a usb stick?
[17:45] <TheBrayn> I used the rpi-update script by Hexxeh, my rpi crashed, any idea why?
[17:46] <cwong2012> pa: it is just as easy. BUT when you're done. you have to edit the cmdline.txt file to point to the right usbdrive.
[17:46] <pa> ah okay
[17:46] <pa> thanks
[17:47] <cwong2012> pa: and the issue i have is that if theres more than 1 usb drive during bootup. it will fail. and using UUID doesnt seem to work. so what i am going to do after work is actually go buy a fast sdcard just for the OS.. like a 8GB, then i can mount a usb drive for /home
[17:47] * jbaanus (~jbaanus@252.201.50.195.dyn.estpak.ee) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[17:49] <pa> cwong2012, i read somewhere the sd slot on the rpi is bandwidth limited to 4mb/s or something like that
[17:49] <pa> so if you get a class10, for istance, it wont matter that much

[18:12] <cwong2012> ok.. cool.

[21:53] <Mentos> if that were true i think a cool project would be to buy legit laptop battery and see how long you could get from that
[21:54] <shikamaru> well, I suppose you’d fall asleep before it even runs out of battery

[21:55] <gnarface> Mentos: from my brief research its all about building the right *type* of voltage regulator.
[21:55] <shikamaru> or maybe not, after all what’s really pumping it would be the screen
[21:55] <Mentos> i actually have 3 "myCharges" that were gifted to me that would work great for this
[21:56] <Mentos> they already go from USB -> microusb
[21:56] <Mentos> http://www.mycharge.com/
[21:57] <Mentos> something like this would be awesome: http://www.geek.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/portable_pi.jpg

[21:59] <cwong2012> should i have /tmp on a diff partition (thumbdrive) instead of sdcard or doesnt matter?
[22:00] <Mentos> and rather than do a small LCD screen a TV headset would be really cool but might be hard to pull off in public
[22:00] <Mentos> i've got an old pair of these laying around that might work (http://reviews.cnet.com/other-displays/sony-glasstron-plm-a55/4505-12705_7-130642.html)

[22:12] <gnarface> will the occulus rift have HDMI input?
[22:13] <gnarface> Mentos: also the first link would be almost perfect for me too, just need a bigger keyboard though
[22:13] <gnarface> that's great
[22:13] <gnarface> do they still sell trapper-keeper's?
[22:13] <gnarface> i just had an idea

[23:32] <ParkerR_> vernonjvs, Some of those first commands are outdated. I want to know too
[23:34] <vernonjvs> Parker, I am trying right now without upgrading the kernel and firmware which I am scared to do since I have the latest pi. We'll see what happens. Looks like it will take a loooong time. :)
[23:34] <Mentos> vernonjvs: Did you install Raspbian with a desktop env?

[23:35] <Mentos> trying to figure out if theres a GUI env you can run on wheezy if you didn't install the desktop environment
[23:35] <vernonjvs> Mentos: Yes, but it boots to the command line. Everything seems to work.
[23:36] <ParkerR_> Mentos, openbox
[23:36] <ParkerR_> Pretty light if you just want to run XBMC
[23:36] <ParkerR_> sudo apt-get install xorf openbox
[23:36] <ParkerR_> *xorg
[23:36] <vernonjvs> I am sshing into the pi and using screen so I can log out.
[23:36] <ParkerR_> And then just startx after a reboot
[23:37] <ParkerR_> Ohh
[23:37] <ParkerR_> Wait
[23:37] <vernonjvs> I don't think I have to startx fot xbmc. we'll see
[23:37] <ParkerR_> Create a file in ~/
[23:37] <ParkerR_> .xinitrc
[23:38] <ParkerR_> And add exec openbox-session as the single line
[23:38] <Mentos> whats that do?
[23:38] <ParkerR_> Starts openbox when you run startx
[23:39] <ParkerR_> That is if you are wanting to do a bare x install you can do the apt-get command and create that file. Then startx
[23:40] <Mentos> was there something else i was supposed to do when i got to my first command prompt before turning Pi off? Cuz now when i turn it back on it doesn't seem to be booting
[23:40] <ParkerR_> Where does it stop?
[23:40] <ParkerR_> I may know what is happening
[23:40] <Mentos> i don't even have an hdmi signal
[23:40] <ParkerR_> Hmm
[23:40] <Mentos> ah restarted
[23:40] <Mentos> seems to be back weird
[23:41] <Mentos> lol do some boots of Pi just not start
