[12:39] <zyxxx> hello all
[12:40] <zyxxx> I'm trying to make raspbian kernel boting on VIA APC 8750, but when the kernel boot, I ahve a kernel panic message !
[12:40] <zyxxx> How could I identify the root cause of this message §?
[12:41] <zyxxx> Warning: unable to open an initial console. Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
[12:42] <Patagonicus> zyxxx: That sounds like /dev/console is missing, try creating that and /dev/null (mknod -m 600 dev/console c 5 1 and …/null c 1 3)
[12:43] * bizarro_1 (~bizarro_1@79.158.55.166) has joined #raspbian
[12:43] <zyxxx> Hi Patagonicus,
[12:43] <zyxxx> DO you think that the issue with the console make the kernel panic occur ?
[12:44] * hero100 (~Quink@183.62.57.116) Quit (Ping timeout: 272 seconds)
[12:45] <Patagonicus> At least that's what I found when I google the panic message. And it is a reasonably assumption: the kernel needs to provide stdin/stdout/stderr for init and it needs a console for that. Although there should be a /dev/console in the raspbian / or devtmpfs should be used, I'm not sure if that includes /dev/console.
[12:48] <zyxxx> Ok, I understand, I have selected ttyS0 as console when I mae menuconfig, so why did the filesystem doesn't added the device ? Have you any idea ?

[16:31] <Bierdieb> hi guys. may someone give me a hint, howto install XBMC on top of raspbian wheezy? i followed a few instruction sets from installing packages to self compiling but nothing works so far. iam new to linux i dont know where to start actually. on my older raspbian i managed somhow to make it work but with all the new firmware stuff and libs it doesnt work anymore.
[16:32] <Bierdieb> i already tried the michael gorven package, but it doesnt work....
[16:33] <Bierdieb> not on top of wheezy. its for a standalone if im right

[22:19] <exangel> hello again.. i think i've run out of things to try to get DPM suspend to work correctly :/ I haven't figured out the right search terms to find the answer with google.. can anyone help?
[22:22] <gnarface> exangel: are you disabling edid or dpms in your xorg.conf?
[22:22] * Syliss (~Home@108.228.178.72) has joined #raspbian
[22:22] * jdawg (~Adium@72.44.240.228) Quit (Quit: Leaving.)
[22:23] <exangel> dpms showed up as enabled in the uh, info command i ran
[22:23] <exangel> so i haven't disabled either of those things manually, the only thing i've edited so far was config.txt which is currently all autodetect except i disabled overscan
[22:25] <gnarface> sorry, i got nothing
[22:25] <exangel> the DPM settings show up in xscreensaver's configuration gui, as if they should work.. :(
[22:25] <gnarface> i can't claim i've tried to see if it works on any of my displays either
[22:26] <exangel> the screen merely goes black but does not suspend in any of the three options (standby/suspend/off) and since the backlight is still on my monitor is still drawing power :(
[22:26] * creemj (~mjc@60-234-221-162.bitstream.orcon.net.nz) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[22:27] <gnarface> i've only used it connected to a framegrabber card and a projector, neither of which have that feature so for all i know you're experiencing expected behavior. :-/ did it used to work ?
[22:27] <exangel> my other display is a TV and i know that won't work because it doesn't even suspend when my xbox shuts down
[22:27] <exangel> i've never seen it work :/
[22:27] <_panzersajt> gnarface, separately
[22:28] <exangel> i've tried replacing the cable with a higher quality HDMI cable and i previously manually set the monitor mode in config.txt also
[22:28] <gnarface> _panzersajt: was that a question? the answer is yes then, the framegrabber card and the projector are separate. the framegrabber card is in my computer and i sent its output to a window on a CRT at a much larger resolution. DPMS *does* work there, but as its not ARM, that's unrelated...
[22:29] <_panzersajt> gnarface, my question was what could cause my pi to reboot
[22:30] <_panzersajt> not reboot
[22:30] <_panzersajt> just freeze
[22:30] <gnarface> _panzersajt: oh, my bad. i'd forgotten. sorry. my theory was the harddrive draw, but that was assuming you were powering it directly from a USB port on the pi. my advice would have been to power it externally (from a seaprate power source or powered usb hub)
[22:30] <_panzersajt> yes it is powered from hub with Y cable
[22:31] * creemj (~mjc@60-234-221-162.bitstream.orcon.net.nz) has joined #raspbian
[22:31] <gnarface> _panzersajt: in that case, your behavior would seem expected, as you'd only get reboots when the harddrive was above a certian threshold of usage
[22:31] <_panzersajt> hmm I have an assumption
[22:31] <gnarface> _panzersajt: but if you're not powering it from the USB or GPIO on the pi itself, i got no ideas then. sorry :( my next advice would be to address the incoming power to the pi. they say it can run at like 5v 0.5a but if you have extra stuff plugged in its not uncommon to need even 1a
[22:32] <exangel> oh i did notice one other thing on the subject of monitor, the LXDE Preferences > Monitor Settings tool has never worked
[22:32] <_panzersajt> can it cause problem if there was no space left on sd?
[22:32] <gnarface> _panzersajt: you're not powering it from the USB port of another machine are you? i've never had trouble doing that on an ASUS board but i've *heard* people say that on MOST boards, the USB power source is notoriously unreliable, enough to cause the PI to reboot
[22:33] <gnarface> _panzersajt: hmm. no space left on the SD card? an interesting notion. i don't know. worth asking one of the developers though
[22:33] <gnarface> exangel: hmm. does it work/sleep/etc correctly when plugged into something OTHER than the PI?
[22:34] <_panzersajt> hdd?
[22:34] <exangel> absolutely , but i have not used any *X OS yet on other systems with this display
[22:34] <_panzersajt> it is not powered from another pc
[22:35] <exangel> I could run a liveCD on my other system just to see

[22:46] <gnarface> _panzersajt: hmm. that's 1.2 amps? should be plenty... maybe try a different one? phone chargers aren't exactly something i'd expect to be designed and tested for continuous operation...

[23:00] <panzersajt_> hmm I think that link was too long :O
[23:01] <gnarface> _panzersajt: yea the important part to grasp here for you is that the one i linked is run by the people whose channel you're in, and the one you linked is included for convenience/first-time testing of hardware by the people who made *the hardware* not the software
[23:02] <panzersajt_> gnarface, thanks for your help
[23:02] <gnarface> panzersajt_: good luck...
[23:02] <panzersajt_> I prefer convenience
[23:02] <panzersajt_> I'm not a linux pro
[23:02] <panzersajt_> just a little bit advanced user

[23:04] <panzersajt_> going to sleep
[23:04] <exangel> so i tried an alternative monitor mode in config.txt and now the LXDE monitor settings applet in Preferences actually works
[23:04] <exangel> but DPM still doesn't suspend/standby/off the monitor at least via quick power-off
