[5:15] * roboguy_ (~roboguy_@98.156.67.41) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[5:16] <hifi> freenode doesn't really have those, almost all channels are project related because of the nature of the network
[5:17] <mucklein> oh well, i guess i have to find out how to find another network then
[5:18] * grache28_ (~grache28@c-76-106-130-14.hsd1.fl.comcast.net) Quit (Quit: WeeChat 0.4.0)
[5:18] <hifi> european general network is IRCNet and US one EFNet
[5:18] <mucklein> the instructions on weechat only spoke of freenode and how to connect to it
[5:20] * kroq-gar78 (~kroq-gar7@pool-71-170-199-93.dllstx.fios.verizon.net) has joined #raspbian
[5:21] <hifi> you can connect the client to many networks
[5:21] <hifi> but I'm not familiar with weechat to instruct you, google is your friend
[5:21] <mucklein> yeah just tried ircnet
[5:21] <mucklein> didnt work
[5:22] <ParkerR> /server add whatevername serveraddress/port
[5:22] <hifi> ircnet servers are very strict where from you can connect
[5:22] <hifi> you usually need to use the local ircnet server
[5:22] <mucklein> i have googled already so much, they wanna make me pay now :)
[5:22] <hifi> efnet isn't that strict though
[5:22] <mucklein> thanks i will try this
[5:23] <hifi> there's also quakenet which is more gaming oriented
[5:24] <mucklein> i founf a list of irc servers/networks on google, but i can not connect wiz weechat
[5:24] <mucklein> like undernet or dalnet
[5:25] <mucklein> meaning using only the / connect command

[13:38] <paullik> Hi. I just downloaded raspbian wheezy from the rpi download page and written it to the sd card using dd and plugged it into the pi, but I cannot get the device to get an IP
[13:38] <paullik> I'm runnign it headless
[13:38] * FR^2 (~frquadrat@farsquare.de) Quit (Quit: Connection reset by peer)
[13:38] <paullik> so I just inserted the card and plugged the rpi in, but I cannot discover it on the network using nmap
[13:39] <paullik> the LNK and 10M LEDs are on
[13:39] * kroq-gar78 (~kroq-gar7@pool-71-170-199-93.dllstx.fios.verizon.net) has joined #raspbian
[13:39] <paullik> what am I missing?
[13:40] <paullik> or should I connect it to a monitor in order to actually install the distro first?
[13:40] <paullik> I;m confused about the docs, some say that sshd is started on boot some say something about an installation process
[13:41] <jakllsch> i'd go with serial console or hdmi console at this point
[13:43] <paullik> jakllsch, I'm not familiar with those terms (apart from hdmi)
[13:44] * SirLagz_ is now known as SirLagz
[13:44] <jakllsch> 'hdmi console' meaning plug in a monitor and keyboard
[13:44] <jakllsch> or 'serial console' meaning plugging in a 3v3 ttl serial adapter to some sort of terminal
[13:46] <paullik> so in oder words, I need a monitor, damn
[13:46] <paullik> other*
[13:48] <jakllsch> pretty much
[13:48] <gnarface> not necessarily; if you have some sort of video capture card you could use that instead
[13:48] <gnarface> i did my first pi boot over the composite output through a tv tuner card
[13:48] <jakllsch> oh, right, composite output
[13:48] <gnarface> won't be pretty
[13:48] <gnarface> but it should be suitable to complete the rpi boot
[13:48] <paullik> neah, I don't have something like that
[13:49] <paullik> what I was lookign for was something ready-to-boot and connect via ssh
[13:49] <jakllsch> that might work, assuming nothing goes wrong
[13:49] * yehnan (~yehnan@61-228-11-132.dynamic.hinet.net) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[13:49] <gnarface> paullik: part of the reason you may be confused is that there are two raspbians; 1) a pre-installed image with some add-on easy-configure (non-debian) scripts that is distributed by the hardware vendor from raspberrypi.org and 2) the actual raspbian install from raspbian.org
[13:50] <gnarface> the latter is more like a traditional debian install
[13:50] <gnarface> the former comes pre-installed and if i remember right, requires you to connect a keyboard + display to complete the after-boot setup
[13:51] <gnarface> i think at least
[13:51] <paullik> hmm
[13:51] <gnarface> there are other issues you could be having too
[13:51] <gnarface> like user error in image/partition creation on the sd card
[13:51] <gnarface> without a display there's no way to know if its even booting at all
[13:52] <paullik> oh man, not nice :)
[13:52] <gnarface> well i have a weird sd card reader i use to dd images onto my sd cards and mess with them and stuff
[13:53] <gnarface> but it is weird in how it represents partitioned flash rom
[13:53] <gnarface> and once it did trick me into dding my rapbian image into a partition ON the sd card instead of overwriting the partition table
[13:53] <_flake> you wouldn't install windows headless
[13:54] <gnarface> paullik: so, if you have a similar cheap chineese knock-off sd card adapter for your computer that you dd'd the image with there's no shame in it doing it wrong the first time
[13:54] <paullik> well, it's not the first time I dd something somewhere, I did it several time with arch and debian on usb sticks, but well, then I had a monitor...
[13:54] <_flake> paullik, do you have another nix os you can mount the sd card partition with, and check the network/interfaces setup?
[13:54] <paullik> _flake, sure, right here
[13:55] <paullik> let me go grab the rpi
[13:55] <paullik> what should I look for after I mount the partitions on the sd card?
[13:56] <_flake> nano -w /mount_point/etc/networking/interfaces
[13:56] <_flake> itll be set to dhcp for eth0
[13:56] <_flake> change it to static, and add the address, netmask and gateway settings?

[13:58] <paullik> ok so I have 2 partitions sdd1 and sdd2
[13:58] <paullik> _flake, issuing that command right now
[14:00] <gnarface> hmm. shouldn't there be 3 partitions?
[14:01] <gnarface> i thought there should be /boot, swap and /
[14:01] <paullik> _flake, http://ix.io/7kN
[14:01] <paullik> _flake, that's the output of cat /mnt_point/etc/network/interfaces
[14:02] <paullik> gnarface, I have /boot and /
[14:03] <gnarface> paullik: i though the swap partition was mandatory but you said that was a pre-made image you downloaded so i could be wrong
[14:03] <gnarface> *thought*
[14:03] <_flake> paullik, ie. http://pastebin.com/srYAywFM
[14:03] <paullik> _flake, I don't understand...
[14:04] <_flake> paullik, what is your current machines local ip address?
[14:04] <paullik> _flake, oh, you want me to set up an ip on the rpi manually (ie. no dhcp)?
[14:04] <_flake> yes
[14:04] <_flake> you CAN ssh in then
[14:05] <paullik> but why? shooudn't my router take care of this? (according to the settings in that file)
[14:05] <_flake> it obviously isn't?
[14:05] <paullik> ...
[14:05] <gnarface> ... assuming the router is set up right
[14:06] <paullik> gnarface, until now it worked correctly...
[14:06] <gnarface> but doesn't the pre-installed raspian need you to run rpi-config first, and doesn't it like, use network-manager?
[14:06] <gnarface> or am i wrong about that?
[14:06] <paullik> because since I brought it I connected two more pc's to it..

[14:07] <gnarface> a later raspbian update seemed to fix it
[14:07] <gnarface> but it would fail to get its dhcp address like 4/5 times at first
[14:08] <paullik> so, first let me check the router's config, then I'll try to set up the IP manually

[23:31] <Stevie-O> greetings
[23:33] <plugwash> hi
[23:36] <Stevie-O> I am looking to build some patched versions of some packages (at the moment, gdb)
[23:36] <Stevie-O> but as the Pi is not exactly a powerhouse
[23:36] <Stevie-O> I was hoping to manage cross-compiling from a Debian machine on x64 hardware
[23:39] * plugwash hasn't got involved with cross building, I know there is some support in the debian tools for it. I also know it's incomplete
[23:44] <Stevie-O> hrm
[23:46] <vagrantc> distcc might be interesting

[23:57] <Stevie-O> If I can manage to create a practical installable cross-compiler
[23:57] <Stevie-O> that cross-compiler could theoretically be made available through distcc
