[9:07] <DocMAX> hi
[9:07] <DocMAX> i need to compile the V4L modules
[9:07] <hifi> hello
[9:07] <hifi> why?
[9:08] <DocMAX> because my new DVB-C USB stick doesnt work with the 3.6 modules
[9:08] <DocMAX> only 3.11 OR V4L compiling
[9:08] <hifi> install 3.6 headers package, try compiling
[9:09] <DocMAX> didn't work
[9:09] <DocMAX> the headers are 3.6, not 3.6.11+
[9:09] <hifi> don't use 3.6.11+
[9:09] <DocMAX> but thats how raspbian comes with
[9:09] <hifi> install the actual kernel package along with the headers
[9:10] <hifi> linux-image-rpi-rpfv is a meta package that points to the proper 3.6 package
[9:10] <DocMAX> i tryied, but V4L ./build scripts doesnt find /lib/modules/3.6.11+ ...
[9:10] <hifi> remember to update your config.txt
[9:10] <hifi> throw that 3.6.11+ out, it's bad for raspbian
[9:11] <DocMAX> but thats the master!
[9:11] <hifi> install the proper kernel package and headers package, boot with the right kernel, try again
[9:11] <hifi> it's the foundation kernel, not raspbian kernel
[9:11] <hifi> raspbian aka debian works best with the actual kernel package and headers package
[9:11] <hifi> last time someone had to compile some kernel modules I gave the same instructions and they were happy with the results
[9:11] <DocMAX> ok hifi, step by step.. how do i "downgrade" to 3.6?
[9:12] <hifi> it's not that much of a downgrade
[9:12] <hifi> only to 3.6.9 IIRC
[9:12] <hifi> install linux-image-rpi-rpfv with apt-get
[9:12] <hifi> it should pull the right kernel package
[9:12] <hifi> install the headers package for the kernel package
[9:13] <hifi> configure config.txt to boot the new kernel image
[9:13] <hifi> reboot to it, if something fails, be ready to swap the SD card to card reader to fix your config.txt
[9:13] <DocMAX> right now im on 3.9
[9:13] <DocMAX> uname -a is:
[9:14] <hifi> where did you get 3.9 from?
[9:14] <DocMAX> Linux raspberrypi 3.9.11+ .. bla bla bla
[9:14] <DocMAX> i did BRANCH=next rpi-update
[9:15] <hifi> oh
[9:15] <DocMAX> but you say linux-image-rpi-rpfv will download the right sources
[9:15] <DocMAX> so i will try now
[9:15] <hifi> it will download the 3.6.9 kernel package for raspbian
[9:16] <hifi> then you can install linux-headers-3.6-trunk for the headers
[9:16] <juliend> hi
[9:16] <hifi> and configure config.txt to boot the proper 3.6 image
[9:16] <juliend> when i run wget https://google.fr, it's very long...
[9:16] <juliend> but wget http://google.fr, very fast... why ?
[9:16] <hifi> then in theory you should be able to reboot to 3.6.9 and compile the modules
[9:16] <juliend> network configration problem ?
[9:16] <hifi> juliend: SSL encryption on Pi is slow
[9:18] <juliend> no i don't think that. nginx on Pi serve https file, and, the rate is good, ... and, when i run curl https://google.fr, is fast too
[9:18] <DocMAX> hifi
[9:19] <DocMAX> i did all that
[9:19] <DocMAX> downloaded 3.6 trunk
[9:19] <ragedragon> hifi, ssl or ssh encryption are fast with the cpu used on rbp
[9:19] <DocMAX> but V4L build script always wants /lib/modules/3.6.11+/
[9:20] <DocMAX> and it doesnt exist
[9:20] <ragedragon> exemple i'm using stunnel for proxy using https and openssl without any speed problem
[9:20] <DocMAX> only /lib/modules/3.6/
[9:20] <hifi> DocMAX: reboot to new kernel, make sure you're running it, remove all 3.6.11 stuff
[9:20] <ragedragon> cpu usage is taking 8-9%
[9:20] <DocMAX> i never had 3.6!
[9:20] <hifi> ragedragon: it's still noticably slower than on a powerful desktop
[9:20] <DocMAX> my fresh install had been 3.6.11 right from the beginning
[9:21] <DocMAX> or is 3.6 == 3.6.11?
[9:21] <hifi> I don't know
[9:21] <hifi> I only use official raspbian packages
[9:22] <DocMAX> mine is official too!!
[9:22] <hifi> rpi-update is far from official
[9:22] <hifi> it's a 3rd party tool frequently abused by unknowing users
[9:23] <DocMAX> installed with NOOPS
[9:23] <DocMAX> http://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads
[9:23] <hifi> so?
[9:24] <hifi> I didn't say your raspbian install is wrong, just that it has 3rd party stuff that breaks the debianism it has and causes all sorts of problems with kernels mostly
[9:24] <hifi> and that's what you're currently seeing
[9:25] <DocMAX> ok, what do i need to do to go from 3.6.11 to 3.6?
[9:25] <hifi> on debian, you usually use the debian packaged kernels and their header packages to build 3rd party modules
[9:25] <hifi> and that just works, because it's designed to work
[9:25] <hifi> but raspbian for some reason shipped the foundation kernel instead of their own
[9:25] <hifi> so it made building kernel modules harder and rpi-update and all that fizzle just created more problems
[9:25] <ShiftPlusOne> hifi, aren't they compiled fromt he same sources?
[9:26] <hifi> ShiftPlusOne: no, raspbian kernel ports patches from the foundation kernel tree on top of their own kernels
[9:26] <ShiftPlusOne> ah, hmm
[9:26] <hifi> thus, the best raspbian kernel, linux-image-3.6-trunk (3.6.9) is from debian experimental with debian patches + ported patches for pi from foundation repo
[9:27] <hifi> that's really the kernel everyone should be using
[9:27] <hifi> at least if compiling stuff against the kernel
[9:27] <DocMAX> hifi, again, how do i go to 3.6?
[9:27] <DocMAX> i need the commands
[9:28] <hifi> you should have vmlinux-something-3.6 in your /boot
[9:28] <DocMAX> kernel.img
[9:28] <hifi> did you install the kernel package
[9:28] <DocMAX> i did nothing
[9:28] <hifi> install the packages
[9:28] <DocMAX> it's how it came
[9:28] <hifi> I give up
[9:31] <DocMAX> hifi
[9:31] <DocMAX> i found something
[9:31] <DocMAX> wget http://www.niksula.hut.fi/~mhiienka/Rpi/linux-headers-rpi/linux-headers-3.6.11+_3.6.11+-2_armhf.deb
[9:31] <DocMAX> sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.6.11+_3.6.11+-2_armhf.deb
[9:31] <hifi> what the heck are you doing
[9:31] <DocMAX> these are my headers!!!!
[9:31] <hifi> ok, you're on your own, good buy
[9:31] <hifi> bye*
[9:32] <DocMAX> if you dont tell me where i can get 3.6 kernel
[9:33] <DocMAX> i needed /lib/modules/3.6.11+/build
[9:33] <DocMAX> and also /lib/modules/3.9.11+/build
[9:33] <juliend> so, why wget on https is slow ? i try with -4 but, nothing
[9:34] <juliend> time curl https://www.google.fr/ => real0m0.330s
[9:34] <juliend> time wget https://www.google.fr/ -4 => real0m15.252s

[10:49] <hifi> might need to reboot
[10:49] <hifi> then there are tons of kernels
[10:49] <excalibas> I rebooted. And replugged the device
[10:50] <hifi> dmesg say anything?
[10:50] <excalibas> hifi, you think it could be the kernel?
[10:50] <hifi> depends if the kernel detects the device and assigns a driver for it

[10:53] <excalibas> in /lib/modules
[10:53] <hifi> do you have any idea what the driver name should be
[10:54] <hifi> or module name
[10:54] <excalibas> no, sorry. But it works on ubuntu
[10:54] <excalibas> is there a way to see
[10:54] <excalibas> ?
[10:54] <hifi> according to the thread it looks like snd-usb-audio should pick it up
[10:54] <hifi> if you type 'modprobe snd-usb-audio' what does your pi say?
[10:55] <excalibas> it says nothing
[10:55] <hifi> so it just doensn't detect it but the module exists
[10:55] <hifi> I don't know this specific hardware so I can't really help you much more
[10:56] <hifi> you could try with another kernel but I doubt it makes a difference
[10:56] <hifi> and switching kernels on the pi is kinda annoying
[10:56] <hifi> but it's definitely kernel/firmware related
[10:57] <hifi> as long as dmesg doesn't say anything meaningful when you plug it except dwc_otg (the USB controller) no driver picks it up
[10:58] <excalibas> The firmware is uploaded to the device when it connects (I believe) That is why I had to install midisport-firmware

[17:36] <vlt> Hello. I want to setup my Raspberry Pi to connect to a "streaming" server and playback a h.264 video in fullscreen mode and to remain completely black in case the stream gets interrupted. Then resume when it's back. Any idea how to begin? Is raspbian a good choice?
[17:37] <nullie> yes
[17:39] <vlt> nullie: It comes with omxplayer. When I tried it I had non-black areas left/right of the 4:3 video where the desktop was visible. Is there something other that omxplayer you'd recommend?
[17:40] <nullie> choice of player is another thing
[17:40] <gnarface> vlt: omxplayer is pretty much it right now. the trick is to not run it in X
[17:40] <vlt> gnarface: Aaaaaah, wow
[17:40] <vlt> omxplayer runs w/o X?
[17:40] * vlt tries
[17:40] <gnarface> yep
[17:41] <gnarface> runs better too. i was informed of this actually as a workaround for an earlier bug where it was corrupting the X desktop on exit
[17:41] <gnarface> now if it could only play from stdin .... :-/
[17:41] <gnarface> the second half of your query (connecting to a streaming server) isn't really a feature of omxplayer yet, so you'll have to get creative with netcat and a fifo or something
[17:42] <nullie> what's special about omxplayer?
[17:43] <nullie> hardware acceleration?
[17:43] <gnarface> nullie: just that its the only thing in raspbian compiled with the pi's propreitary hardware acceleration headers, yea
[17:43] <gnarface> nullie: presumably there is nothing special about that you couldn't do with any of the other video players or 3d games, its just that omxplayer and some out-of-distro ioquake3 fork are the only things anyone has bothered to do it with so far
[17:43] <vlt> gnarface: My video source will be DV format. What is the best format to encode to to be played on the RPi? h264? Or is there something that needs less cpu power?
[17:44] * plugwash (~plugwash@94.6.24.111) has joined #raspbian
[17:44] <gnarface> vlt: unless you buy the extra codecs, h264 is the best choice (as that's the one you get hardware acceleration in omxplayer with for free)
[17:44] <vlt> gnarface: Ok, thanks
[17:45] <gnarface> most stuff should work if its not too high res, but it'll strain the cpu hard
[17:46] <vlt> If I setup an ffmpeg process somewhere on the network that takes the dv data and encodes to h264 and then pipes into netcat ...
[17:46] <gnarface> and what won't work will surprise you (mpeg2 is extra painful without the hardware acceleration for some reason - my guess would be due to the relatively higher bandwidth of the data stream)
[17:46] <nullie> vlt, you will probably have to feed it black stream when main stream terminates
[17:46] <vlt> gnarface: I think I'll (simply) got for h264
[17:46] <gnarface> vlt: yea that could work i think if then on the pi end you capture the netcat stream and feed it into a fifo that omxplayer can treat as a file
[17:47] <vlt> nullie: Do you know how to define a black alternative stream as fallback?
[17:47] <gnarface> hmm. i feel like you can do that with ffmpeg
[17:48] <nullie> vlt, ffmpeg probably can generate that
[17:48] <vlt> nullie: Ah, cool
