[13:29] * janPasi (~jp@dsl-olubrasgw2-54f867-209.dhcp.inet.fi) has joined #raspbian

[13:32] <SirLagz> huzzah !
[13:32] <gilligan94> yea but the default raspbian has the added functionality of noobs
[13:32] <shiftplusone> hifi, I've been recommending the installer since I've heard of it. >_<
[13:32] <SirLagz> gilligan94: what ?
[13:32] <SirLagz> do you mean NOOBs can install Raspbian ?
[13:33] <gilligan94> yes
[13:33] <gilligan94> and you can use it to dualboot etc
[13:33] <SirLagz> hm. Didn't think of that haha
[13:33] <SirLagz> shiftplusone: I guess there's still a reason for the sort of script that strips everything out haha
[13:33] <SirLagz> gilligan94: I've written up a script to strip things out
[13:34] <SirLagz> not very up to date though.
[13:34] <gilligan94> it's better than nothing
[13:34] <shiftplusone> I'd still install using the installer over a the NOOBS install to have the best of both worlds, but that requires a little bit of tweaking.

[13:35] <SirLagz> shiftplusone: so would I, but I'm not using NOOBs at all though haha
[13:35] <SirLagz> gilligan94: try this one - http://sirlagz.net/2013/08/03/raspbian-server-edition-scripts/

[13:35] <gilligan94> thanks sirlagz
[13:35] <shiftplusone> I've been thinking about adding the installer to NOOBS, but don't have the time right now.
[13:36] <hifi> I die a little bit inside every time I see stripped down raspbian
[13:36] * SirLagz runs and hides
[13:36] <hifi> the principle of it is just so backwards
[13:36] <gilligan94> also does anyone know if X is accelerated on the pi yet?
[13:36] <SirLagz> hifi: I agree
[13:37] * SirLagz kicks RSE under the table
[13:37] <shiftplusone> gilligan94, no, the fbturbo driver is as close as it gets right now.

[13:39] <shiftplusone> gilligan94, a while back they concluded that it's just not doable. That X required too many small changes (like single pixel operations), where the GPU is of no help at all. Gathering all of these changes and sending them out in chunks takes up too much CPU and isn't worth it either. There seems to be some renewed effort based on utilizing the ARM's features a little better. JamesH seems to have s
[13:39] <shiftplusone> ome interest in making little changes to use the GPU where possible as well, but that hasn't gotten far yet.
[13:40] <gilligan94> ok thanks
[13:40] <shiftplusone> So maybe squeezing out what's possible from the ARM and then using the GPU for things like the mouse cursor will eventually make it nice and smooth, but that's not happening any time soon.
[13:40] <hifi> is turbofb some bastard child of shadowfb?
[13:40] <hifi> wait, fbturbo
[13:40] <gilligan94> what is fbturbo? what does it do?
[13:41] <shiftplusone> https://github.com/ssvb/xf86-video-fbturbo

[13:52] <gilligan94> lightdm.conf appears to be empty for me
[13:52] <shiftplusone> then it might be elsewhere
[13:52] <shiftplusone> like /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf
[13:52] <shiftplusone> use tab completion magic
[13:54] <gilligan94> found it forgot the / infront of etc
[13:57] <gilligan94> hmmm all the autologin stuff appears to be commented out, I dont see anything that would cause it to login without a password
[13:58] <shiftplusone> did you enable boot to desktop in raspi-config?
[13:58] <gilligan94> yes
[13:58] <shiftplusone> then you need to take a closer look
[13:59] <gilligan94> actually I think I disabled it again
[14:00] <shiftplusone> then you can just enable the lightdm service without doing anything else
[14:00] <gilligan94> how would I do that?
[14:01] <shiftplusone> if you don't know how, just use raspi-config, edit the conf file and that will work for now.
[14:01] <gilligan94> alright
