[3:02] <gp5st> howdy! when I install mysql, i have some issues with it. looking into it it seems log_action_msg in the init script is bailing out
[3:02] <gp5st> but i don't understand how
[3:03] <gp5st> when i set -x in the init script I get the following: https://dpaste.de/3gOm
[3:03] * eXtremo (~eXtremo@unaffiliated/extremo) has joined #raspbian

[3:12] <killer_prince> gp5st: could it be possible that when starting mysqld, there is no network available..? you could check syslog and mysql logs.
[3:13] <gp5st> killer_prince: i'm only having it bind 127.0.0.1, also, i'm doing this over ssh, so it should have a network adapter available
[3:14] <gp5st> killer_prince: the mysql logs have the message that /etc/mysql/debian-start echos as the last thing
[3:14] <killer_prince> hmm..
[3:23] * eao (~emanon@178.19.62.212) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[3:26] * plugwash doesn't see any errors there...............
[3:26] * Reggie__ (ReggieUK@2.120.219.163) Quit ()
[3:33] <gp5st> plugwash: sorry, the command returns 1
[3:34] * girafe2 (girafe@213-245-68-254.rev.numericable.fr) Quit (Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
[3:34] <gp5st> that's the extent of what's printed by set -x
[3:34] * girafe (girafe@213-245-68-254.rev.numericable.fr) has joined #raspbian
[3:34] <gp5st> i can't figure out why the return is 1. also, the last thing printed by set -x is QUIET= and that's in the lsb script to see if it should print anything
[3:35] <plugwash> hmm, rereading it I see the error hidden in that mess from set -x
[3:35] <plugwash> but set -x doesn't seem to be revealing anything about what is going wrong :(
[3:36] <gp5st> what's the error? i saw the stuff about checking tables and such, but mysqlcheck doesn't report anything wrong
[3:36] <plugwash> error: '\''Can'\''t connect to local MySQL server through socket '\''/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock'\'' (2)'\''
[3:36] <plugwash> Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '\''/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock'\'' exists!'
[3:37] <plugwash> or maybe that is just part of what set -x is outputting I really can't tell
[3:37] <plugwash> what does the output look like normally without set -x ?
[3:37] <gp5st> plugwash: [ OK ] Starting Mysql Server
[3:37] <gp5st> it doesn't print anything
[3:38] <gp5st> and the syslog isn't all that much more helpful
[3:38] <plugwash> so what makes you think there is a problem? server doesn't start?
[3:39] <gp5st> apt-get install bails because /etc/init.d/mysql start fails (exit code = 1)
[3:39] <gp5st> even though the server starts and it seems to be configured properly
[3:40] <plugwash> Personally I'd try in #debian-mysql on oftc, I doubt whatever is causing this is a raspbian specific issue
[3:40] <gp5st> oh man, last time i went to a #debian channel about a debian derived distro, i was temp banned
[3:41] <gp5st> they don't take well to that kind of stuff
[3:42] <gp5st> i'm just going to comment out the call to /etc/mysql/debian-start and be done with it
[3:42] <gp5st> it doesn't do anything besides check tables afaik
[3:43] <sney> #debian-mysql is a development channel, not a general support channel... the "no derivatives" rule in #debian exists for several good reasons, none of which have anything to do with finding possibly common bugs
[3:44] <gp5st> ok
[3:44] <gp5st> i'll give it a shot in the morning
[3:45] <gp5st> (10 til midnight here)
[3:46] * plugwash does wonder if the hard line taken by #debian on derivatives is counterproductive
[3:47] <plugwash> because it means users of derivatives will lie to get support from there
[3:48] * killer_prince is now known as lazy_prince
[3:48] <sney> the lies don't usually lat
[3:48] <sney> last, even
[3:48] <sney> and the point - that a distribution's own channel is a much better place to ask for support - stands
[3:49] <plugwash> sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't, it depends on both how close the derivative is and what sort of problem it is
[3:49] <sney> I've seen waaaay more of the "no my system is really debian because I said so and therefore you should make me an exception" than I do of people actually claiming to be using debian when they aren't
[3:50] <plugwash> when I've been guilty of it i've just carefully avoided mentioning that i'm using a derivative
[3:51] <plugwash> though that was a long time ago when I was using knoppix
[3:51] <sney> iirc, the rule came about because of knoppix
[3:52] <plugwash> hmm
[3:54] * plugwash muses the philosophical question of when does a derivative become a derivative
[3:55] <plugwash> i'm sure there are plenty of people who locally customise their debian systems to a similar extent that knopper customised things with knoppix
[3:57] * yofel (~quassel@ubuntu/member/yofel) Quit (Ping timeout: 265 seconds)
[3:57] <gp5st> so, are things like apt-get upgrade slugish for everyone, or do I just have a crappy sd card?
[3:58] * yofel (~quassel@ubuntu/member/yofel) has joined #raspbian
[3:58] <plugwash> things like apt-get upgrade tend to suck on SD cards generally, they suck more on some cards than others
[3:58] <plugwash> lots of random writes :/
[3:59] <gp5st> should flash media excel at random writes?
[4:00] <plugwash> no, random read is easy for flash based storage, random write not so much
[4:01] <gp5st> ah
[4:01] <sney> and the pi is fairly pokey at a lot of tasks that involve disk activity
[4:02] <plugwash> flash has a couple of issues, firstly the erase blocks tend to be a lot bigger than the logical blocks, secondly erasing a block causes degredation of the flash cells and to maintain acceptable reliability erases must be balanced across the flash array
[4:03] <plugwash> to get arround this a flash translation layer providing a system of mapping and wear leveling is needed between the raw flash and the "idealised block device" abstraciton presented to the host
[4:04] <plugwash> making such a translation layer work well for sequential writes is pretty easy, making it work well for random writes is much trickier.
[4:04] * SirLagz hails plugwash as the almighty Raspbiain god
[4:04] <gp5st> thanks plugwash
[4:04] <plugwash> SSDs go to the trouble required to make random write work well, things like SD cards and USB sticks not so much

[4:16] <shawnbon206> yo
[4:17] <plugwash> hi
[4:17] <shawnbon206> trying to get my apache server to show up on the net. my port 80 is forwarded to that computer but it says its closed. i havent enabled any software firewall on the pi (i havent disabled any either)
[4:17] <shawnbon206> and ideas?
[4:18] <plugwash> Can you reach the server running on the Pi from the local network using the Pi's local IP
[4:18] <shawnbon206> yep
[4:18] <plugwash> and can the Pi access the internet?
[4:19] <shawnbon206> let me check
[4:19] <plugwash> if the answer to both my questions is yes then the problem is almost certainly not with the Pi but with either whatever it is you are using for port forwarding or your ISP
[4:19] <shawnbon206> it cant
[4:20] <shawnbon206> it can see the gateway however
[4:20] <shawnbon206> i will ifup ifdown real fast
[4:20] <shawnbon206> oh thats maybe not a good idea
[4:20] <plugwash> is the default gateway on the Pi set correctly?

[14:06] <shiftplusone> no, the relevant rules already exist on the foundation's version of Raspbian. How did you install xbmc and raspbian?
[14:07] <ZIPY> i installed everything manually with raspbian installer and xbmc from michael gorven guide

[14:11] <ZIPY> not sure if it was hifis, i did that a couple months ago
[14:11] <shiftplusone> Hmm... I don't know about that installer (there are two listed on raspbian.org), but when I used hifi's I think the only 'extra' thing I did was create the input group, add a relevant udev rule and add myself to it, but that's covered in the guide, IIRC.
[14:11] <ZIPY> i didnt use a image
[14:11] <shiftplusone> (add myself to the input group, I mean)
