[1:25] * eaj (~eaj@cpc3-woki7-2-0-cust177.6-2.cable.virginm.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[1:32] <gnarface> last i checked i think it would technically work with as small as 2GB but you'll be really cramped in there
[1:33] <gnarface> i would personally recommend at least 8

[1:36] <gnarface> you can get a more minimal install easily with hifi's installer
[1:36] <gnarface> it won't do much by default though
[1:36] <gnarface> you'll have to pick and install things you need
[1:37] <gnarface> not that its hard, but it can be frustrating if its your first time with linux and you don't know the names of common stuff off the top of your head

[12:25] <CEOofBitcoin> Hey guys
[12:25] <FR^2> :-)
[12:26] <CEOofBitcoin> I have a short question
[12:27] <CEOofBitcoin> I used VPN services in the past with Tunnelblick on OS X. Now I am using my new Raspberry Pi with Raspbian and would like to use my VPN service there too. Is there a newbie friendly way to do that? Like some application.
[12:27] <CEOofBitcoin> I'm trying not to hassle around with the Terminal everytime.
[12:27] <CEOofBitcoin> Glad if someone might want to help me out with that

[13:01] <frank1e> I don't get it
[13:01] <frank1e> locked myself out of my fresh installed raspbian again.
[13:01] <frank1e> 6th time in a row now that it simply won't accept the default password.
[13:01] <frank1e> what is this sorcery
[13:03] * rela (~x@pdpc/supporter/active/rela) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[13:03] <frank1e> is this a regular known issue? I can't believe what I am seeing here. _never_ had 1 single time it accepted the default password "pi"
[13:03] <frank1e> not even "raspberry" "raspberrz" or "raspberrypi" or anything like that.
[13:03] <shiftplusone> the default password is not pi
[13:03] <frank1e> tried anything
[13:03] <shiftplusone> what username and password combination did you use?
[13:04] <frank1e> its the default settings
[13:04] <shiftplusone> and where did you download the image or installer from?
[13:04] <frank1e> freshly installed
[13:04] <frank1e> from raspbian.org
[13:05] <frank1e> it says username: "raspberrypi" password: (empty text input field)
[13:05] <shiftplusone> there are no (maintained) images on raspbian.org.
[13:05] <frank1e> wait a second
[13:05] <frank1e> yeah then it might be raspberrypi.org
[13:06] <shiftplusone> or installers for that matter. So can you give a URL for the download and the username and password you used?
[13:06] <frank1e> ?!??!
[13:07] <shiftplusone> I don't know what's hard about this..... what username and password did you use?
[13:07] <shiftplusone> you said which passwords you've tried
[13:07] <shiftplusone> but not the username
[13:08] <shiftplusone> and if you use 'raspberrypi' as the username, where did you get that from?
[13:08] <frank1e> frank1e
[13:08] <frank1e> it says username: "raspberrypi" password: (empty text input field)
[13:08] <frank1e> I didnt change the username and/or password
[13:08] <shiftplusone> I'll skip ahead. The download page says Default login: pi / raspberry
[13:08] <shiftplusone> that is username pi
[13:08] <shiftplusone> password raspberry
[13:08] <frank1e> okay this is very strange
[13:10] <frank1e> mh anyway. cant format my sd card because the card reader on my pc is broken. damn. :/
[13:10] * mr-jack (~mr-jack@unaffiliated/mr-jack) Quit (Read error: Operation timed out)

[13:10] <shiftplusone> why format anything if you already raspbian installed?
[13:10] <frank1e> because I cant login
[13:10] * tak30 (~tak30@243.Red-79-158-206.staticIP.rima-tde.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[13:11] <frank1e> and somehow, like you said, the username / pass combination is not like it should when it's default
[13:11] <shiftplusone> sure you can. enter the username pi, not raspberrypi
[13:11] <frank1e> I cant change the username
[13:11] <shiftplusone> nobody is asking to change it
[13:11] <frank1e> I only see the graphical ligin prompt
[13:11] <frank1e> *login
[13:11] <frank1e> which asks for the pass. no way to change the username.
[13:11] <shiftplusone> =/
[13:11] <shiftplusone> and 'raspberry' as the password doesn't work?
[13:12] <frank1e> sadly no
[13:12] <shiftplusone> press ctrl + alt + 2
[13:12] <frank1e> okay hold on
[13:12] <shiftplusone> sorry f2
[13:12] <shiftplusone> ctrl alt f2
[13:13] * Scriven (~nevirsc@S01063085a9395770.vc.shawcable.net) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[13:13] <frank1e> ahh okay. this is new what I'm seeing :)
[13:13] <shiftplusone> try the username/pass combination there
[13:13] <frank1e> okay I did
[13:13] <frank1e> didn't work
[13:14] <shiftplusone> You seem to have some strange image =/
[13:14] <shiftplusone> do you know the filename of it?
[13:15] <frank1e> uh no
[13:16] <frank1e> ctrl alt f2 -> it says:
[13:16] <frank1e> "Rasbian GNU/Linux 7 raspberrypi tty2"
[13:16] <frank1e> "raspberrypi login:"
[13:16] <frank1e> thats all
[13:16] <shiftplusone> and you entered 'pi' pressed enter, then raspberry, enter?
[13:17] <frank1e> also tried that, yes.
[13:17] <frank1e> "Login incorrect"
[13:17] <shiftplusone> k, when you get the card reader, make sure you download the image from raspberrypi.org
[13:18] <frank1e> What makes me wonder in general about all this is the fact that I am having the identic problem over and over again since months. I downloaded the fresh new image from the website, install it, install chrome on it
[13:19] <frank1e> and some time it just asks for a password when booting up. this is the point where it won't let me in again. Every time.
[13:20] <shiftplusone> it's possible that your passwd file gets messed up due to sd corruption, but very unlikely
[13:20] <frank1e> yes but when it happens that often ...

[13:22] <frank1e_> here I can show you the last thing I did before it locked me out: I followed this tutorial, came to the point where I had to enter "startx", suddenly all my open windows were gone, empty desktop showed up. Then I shut down everything because all my stuff was gone and after the next boot it asks for a password.
[13:22] <frank1e_> http://www.instantsupportsite.com/self-help/bitcoin-setting-up-wallet-raspberry-pi/
[13:22] <frank1e_> and it only happens when I try to do things like this.
[13:23] <shiftplusone> not relevant to your issue, but it is important to understand why you run the commands in tutorials.
[13:23] <shiftplusone> in this case, you were already running X, yet you ran startx.
[13:24] <frank1e_> yes I know
[13:24] <frank1e_> I was also wondering why I had to enter it because it was already on
[13:24] * frank1e (~frank1e@unaffiliated/frank1e) Quit (Ping timeout: 246 seconds)
[13:24] <shiftplusone> the tutorial has 'wrong' written all over it.
[13:25] <frank1e_> oh god :/
[13:25] <shiftplusone> but it wouldn't mess up your system
[13:26] <shiftplusone> would it be fair to say that it happens when you download/install a lot of stuff?
[13:26] <frank1e_> no
[13:26] <frank1e_> because I am lets say pissed because of this repeating issue and I only keep it to the basics: Install chromium, install an irc client and try to install a lightweight bitcoin client. thats all.
[13:26] <frank1e_> nothing more nothing less
[13:27] <frank1e_> every time with the fresh installed image
[13:27] <frank1e_> :/
[13:27] <shiftplusone> when you get the card into a reader, it might be worth investigating what happened.
[13:27] * BCMM (~BCMM@unaffiliated/bcmm) has joined #raspbian
[13:28] <frank1e_> In fact I have a card reader built in my macbook pro I have here. But formatting the card for my pi is a lot easier with windows is what I heard.
[13:28] <shiftplusone> not sure that's true.
[13:28] <frank1e_> we already tried that (me and a friend of mine) a whole night. no result.
[13:29] <shiftplusone> if you pop the card into your macbook and edit cmdline.txt, you can add init=/bin/bash to the end of the line. That will let you bypass the login and set the root password.
[13:29] * mr-jack (~mr-jack@unaffiliated/mr-jack) has joined #raspbian
[13:29] <shiftplusone> Then you remove that bit from the line and you should be able to log in again.
[13:29] <Dagger> if you give "raspberry" for the root password, I'd expect it to not let you log in
[13:30] <Dagger> because that's the default password!
[13:30] <frank1e_> wowowowow
[13:30] <frank1e_> writing that down right now hold on
[13:30] * Ely_arp (~mark@p5B31011C.dip0.t-ipconnect.de) Quit (Quit: Leaving.)
[13:31] <shiftplusone> the command to change the password is passwd, by the way

[13:33] <frank1e_> okay i added init=/bin/bash
[13:34] <frank1e_> its booting. takes longer than usual but lets see.
[13:34] <shiftplusone> should be quicker, if anything.
[13:34] <shiftplusone> you added it to the end of the line rather than added a new line, right?

[13:35] <shiftplusone> can you type?
[13:35] <shiftplusone> try ls <enter>
[13:35] <frank1e_> lol
[13:36] <frank1e_> now it says root@(none):/#
[13:36] <shiftplusone> good
[13:36] <frank1e_> I love when you say good
[13:36] <shiftplusone> run passwd
[13:36] <frank1e_> password updated successfully
[13:37] <shiftplusone> now run passwd pi
[13:37] <frank1e_> such yay! much wow!
[13:37] <frank1e_> I actually did "raspberry" as the new passw
[13:37] <shiftplusone> not very secure, but I'll let you worry about that later.
[13:38] <frank1e_> now getting back to my regular gui -> removing that init=/bin/bash and reboot, right?
[13:38] <shiftplusone> yeah
[13:38] <Dagger> I worry about the sanity of running a Bitcoin wallet on a Raspberry Pi with a root password of "raspberry"
[13:39] <frank1e_> yes yes I know
[13:40] <frank1e_> I use Paper Wallets for the important stuff anyway. This is just for playing around and using it as a "hot wallet" for daily use. Which is more safe (with some other password of course) than using it on my mac or win pc.
[13:42] <frank1e_> gui login window says: Incorrect password please try again. Tried it with the new password I just created.
[13:42] <frank1e_> :/
[13:43] <shiftplusone> did you also run 'passwd pi' like I said?
[13:43] <frank1e_> yes
[13:43] <shiftplusone> press ctrl alt f2 again
[13:43] <shiftplusone> and try username root
[13:43] <shiftplusone> password whatever you set
[13:44] <frank1e_> password incorrect
[13:44] <shiftplusone> then your pi is haunted
[13:44] <frank1e_> okay this is getting strange. I think I just forget my loved pi :/ dont want to run over the same problems over and over again. sick of it.
[13:44] <Dagger> if you type your password into the username field, does it actually all show up?
[13:45] <Dagger> I know some keys on my keyboard like to break sometimes

[13:48] <frank1e_> theres no problem with that so far.
[13:48] <shiftplusone> learning linux can be tricky enough without ghosts haunting your hardware, so I certainly wouldn't blame you for giving up.
[13:49] <shiftplusone> As for myself, that would drive me crazy and I wouldn't be able to sleep until I figured it out. >_<
[13:49] <frank1e_> yeah its kinda frustrating.
[13:50] <frank1e_> I was willing to learn a bit about linux and how to do some things more safely without touching my pc or mac and using the pi instead. but somehow something won't let me. this is a thing since I got my pi last year.
[13:50] <shiftplusone> you can always use virtualbox
[13:50] <frank1e_> And I learned to love raspbian. But having to deal with the same issue randomly appearing sucks.

[23:21] <frank1e> hey
[23:22] <frank1e> me again
[23:22] <frank1e> so I managed to get the login screen do something else than saying "incorrect password, please try again"
[23:22] <frank1e> but now instead of that the screen simply goes black and the login screen loads again asking for the user and password.
[23:22] <frank1e> any ideas whats going on?
[23:24] <frank1e> background story: my pi seems to be haunted. installed raspbian new over the last few months since last year. still struggling with the same random issue which locks me out of my raspbian.
[23:26] <gnarface> frank1e: which raspbian did you use? do you get the same problem when trying to log in remotely over ssh? have you tried a different keyboard?
[23:26] <frank1e> the latest version
[23:26] <frank1e> no ssh never used or enabled
[23:26] * Fusing (~fusing@248.226.102.84.rev.sfr.net) has joined #raspbian
[23:27] <frank1e> i just install very basic stuff, 2 things: chromium and some irc client. after that I do random regular stuff. randomly at some time it asks for user/pass on boot and won't accept _any_ passwords at all.
[23:27] <gnarface> "the latest version" isn't a specific enough answer. there are several completely different installers and premade images. exact url please to the download you used
[23:27] <frank1e> every. single. time.
[23:28] <frank1e> I have no idea which version it is. installed it on september, deleted it after a while, downloaded it again on october (latest version) and so on. same thing over the next months until today.
[23:28] <frank1e> I'm tired.
[23:29] <ppq> does this happen with the default login/password, too?
[23:29] * Fusing2 (~fusing@248.226.102.84.rev.sfr.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 268 seconds)
[23:30] <frank1e> yes
[23:30] <frank1e> totally random.
[23:31] <ppq> faulty RAM is one possibility
[23:31] <frank1e> what does that mean
[23:31] <ppq> you should do a fsck on a regular basis and check if there were errors
[23:31] <ppq> (that's an indicator)
[23:31] <gnarface> well its one possibility but its also the least likely one and the only one he can't address in any way
[23:32] <frank1e> oh wait
[23:32] <frank1e> now something weird happening again. on the graphical login screen, I pressed strg+alt+f2 and tried my user/pass there
[23:33] <frank1e> after several times trying the same combination it worked. very strange. (I typed without errors to be sure)
[23:34] <frank1e> how do I get into the graphical desktop from there?
[23:34] <gnarface> without knowing what "random regular stuff" entails or being confident that he's paid enough attention to realize whether he's actually recreating the issue himself in an obviously reproducible manner every time, all i can really recommend is 1) try a different sd card, power supply and keyboard 2) reinstall using hifi's installer instead of one of the foundation's premade images and 3) pay more attention this time. th
[23:34] <gnarface> ere's a good chance something you installed/changed in error is blowing it. for all we know you mapped the enter key to ctrl-c or ctrl-d
[23:34] <gnarface> wireless keyboards can also be problematic, especially in areas where there is heavy signal interference and when they have low batteries
[23:34] <frank1e> gnarface 1) tried several sd cards, keyboards and what not.
[23:35] <frank1e> 2) reinstalled it endless times
[23:35] * Fusing (~fusing@248.226.102.84.rev.sfr.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
[23:35] <gnarface> frank1e: yea but you don't know where from. and i'm telling you they're not all the same
[23:35] <gnarface> it matters
[23:36] <gnarface> also, in all troubleshooting endeavors, if overclocking, the first thing to do should be disable overclocking
[23:37] <gnarface> it definitely *could* be bad ram but if it WERE bad ram it would be pretty weird for its misbehavior to be so predictable
[23:37] <frank1e> I didnt overclock anything at all.
[23:37] <frank1e> I have the most standard way to use and boot a pi
[23:37] <gnarface> that is your first misunderstanding
[23:37] <gnarface> there isn't any "most standard way"
[23:37] * ppq (~ppq@unaffiliated/ppq) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[23:38] <gnarface> there are several different available starting options and they don't even all use the same kernel or firmware
[23:38] <gnarface> several of them even have non-linux crap bolted on by the foundation
[23:38] <gnarface> (in addition to their firmware)
[23:38] <gnarface> have you run rpi-update at all? (note, i'm not necessarily advising you do at this point, it would just help to know how old your firmware is)
[23:39] <frank1e> yes I have done updates
[23:39] <gnarface> there is a history of severe regressions with their firmware
[23:39] <gnarface> so you say you HAVE used "rpi-update" to do updates? what does "uname -a" say right now?
[23:40] * vagrantc wonders if raspberry pi foundation shouldn't call their distro a raspbian derivative, and give it some other name...
[23:41] <frank1e> hold on a second please
[23:41] <frank1e> startx should load the "desktop", right?
[23:41] <frank1e> the graphical interface
[23:42] <frank1e> it says: "xauth: timeout in locking authority file //.Xauthority
[23:42] <frank1e> no everythings gone, screen went black.
[23:43] <frank1e> *now
[23:43] <gnarface> vagrantc i don't wonder that at all. i think it should have a warning label on it.
[23:44] <gnarface> frank1e: startx only loads the desktop if you aren't using a graphical login manager, which the foundation's image (that we've now inferred you're using) does by default... so running startx would just basically choke, probably in the method you describe
[23:45] <frank1e> okay, whats the raspbian download url you guys would recommend?
[23:45] <gnarface> frank1e: https://github.com/hifi/raspbian-ua-netinst
[23:46] <gnarface> frank1e: (which is linked from a forum post that is linked here: http://www.raspbian.org/RaspbianInstaller - we're assuming you got your images from the foundation at raspberrypi.org/downloads)
[23:46] <frank1e> and I can put that on my sd card with my card reader in my macbook pro?
[23:47] <gnarface> frank1e: yes
[23:47] <gnarface> frank1e: there are clear instructions if you scroll down to "Obtaining installer files on Windows and Mac"
[23:47] <frank1e> okay this is going to be an adventure..
[23:47] <frank1e> yes thanks
[23:47] <gnarface> frank1e: do make a backup though first
[23:48] <gnarface> frank1e: you may discover what you're doing wrong and want to come back
[23:48] <gnarface> frank1e: you have an sd card reader for your mac?
[23:48] <frank1e> theres nothing to backup since it always locked me out before I could start putting my data on it.
[23:48] <gnarface> frank1e: you should be able to use dd to make a simple backup image in its current state
[23:48] <gnarface> frank1e: i also would have asked you to try ssh login
[23:49] <frank1e> the sd card reader is built in my macbook pro
[23:49] <gnarface> frank1e: and if you're using a wirless keyboard, it would be worthwhile to simply try typing the password slower (i have that problem with mine when i'm further away than about 3 feet)
[23:50] <gnarface> frank1e: i know you're tried and you're in a dangerous emotional state right now. you really might want to make a backup first - if it boots its probably quite hasty not to, but suit yourself.
[23:51] <gnarface> you did say you did random other stuff which seemed to me to mean you had actually put some effort and time into customization
[23:52] <frank1e> installing chrome
[23:52] <frank1e> and installing an irc client
[23:52] <frank1e> + configuring the irc client.

[23:55] <gnarface> which irc client? and you earlier actually said chromium, which can be obtained from the official repos... am i to assume you downloaded both chrome and said irc client from elsewhere instead of using the "apt-get install [package name]" method?
[23:55] <gnarface> what sort of customization of said irc client are you actually doing? any of this involve 3rd party plugins or perl scripts downloaded from random websites?
[23:57] <gnarface> frank1e: ^^^

[23:58] <gnarface> frank1e: if so, for any of those things, i can probably help you accomplish what you were originally trying but with significantly less risk
[23:59] <gnarface> frank1e: at this point its really possible something you were doing that you thought was innocuous isn't
[23:59] <gnarface> frank1e: (like running rpi-update :-/)
[23:59] <frank1e> hold on
