[0:00] <frank1e> Im trying to wipe this sd card and reinstall the image you have linked via "xzcat /imagelocation/ > /sdcard/"
[0:01] <gnarface> yea... you said you're using os X though... do you even have xzcat installed?
[0:01] <gnarface> it might be easier for you to use the zip file
[0:02] <frank1e> never used xzcat :F makes sense why it doesnt work.
[0:02] <gnarface> its not stock on most versions of linux either. its just the newest hot flaming shit compression util
[0:02] <gnarface> it shows some lack of restraint i think using it
[0:02] <frank1e> hot flaming shit compressuin util :D
[0:03] <gnarface> you can get it and install it for os X but unless you're interested in using it extensively, its probably easiest to just use the .zip approach. that can just be unzipped with stuffit or whatever comes on the mac (may actually have a copy of the old command-line zip)
[0:03] <frank1e> okay 1 sec
[0:04] <gnarface> and that won't require image writing, that can just be unzipped into a normal fat32 formatted sd card
[0:04] <frank1e> with my harddrive util in my os x I can just format it to FAT
[0:04] <frank1e> cant chose between FAT or FAT32
[0:04] <gnarface> uhh
[0:04] <gnarface> no
[0:04] <gnarface> don't choose fat, if i recall FAT is actually Fat16
[0:04] <gnarface> there should be an option though for "MSDOS" ?
[0:05] <frank1e> no wait
[0:05] <gnarface> (which is actually FAT32, if i recall)
[0:05] <frank1e> just saw it actually formatted it with FAT32
[0:05] <gnarface> ok, if you're sure...
[0:05] <gnarface> its been so long since i used a mac
[0:05] <frank1e> Name : UNTITLED
[0:05] <frank1e> Typ : Partition
[0:05] <frank1e> Medien-Identifikation : disk1s1
[0:05] <frank1e> Mount-Point : /Volumes/UNTITLED
[0:05] <frank1e> Dateisystem : MS-DOS-Dateisystem (FAT32)
[0:05] <gnarface> but i know you can definitely do this with the disk util in /Applications/Utillities
[0:05] <gnarface> if that's what you used, its probably right
[0:06] <gnarface> then you can just unzip and go
[0:06] <frank1e> yes I have used that
[0:06] <frank1e> already unzipped
[0:07] <gnarface> ok, so there is some very important information you need to read further down the page here: https://github.com/hifi/raspbian-ua-netinst for after it finishes booting
[0:07] <gnarface> you should *definitely* do the stuff that it says under "First boot"
[0:08] <frank1e> okay hold on :)
[0:08] <gnarface> but first, you should at least *read* the stuff under "Installer customization" further down because this installer needs a network connection and by default it assumes your network has DHCP properly configured
[0:09] <gnarface> (which, if it doesn't will be really frustrating unless you read this part)
[0:09] <gnarface> if you know your network to NOT have DHCP setup right, then you'll probably want to dial in a proper ip address, gateway, network mask, broadcast and nameservers, etc before trying to boot
[0:10] <frank1e> I am already reading trough everything and try to understand what I can
[0:10] <frank1e> :)
[0:11] <gnarface> well, if there's something you don't understand, DO ASK rather than just ignoring it or fudging it
[0:11] <gnarface> details are very important in this game
[0:11] <frank1e> I have tried to let it boot without changing anything for the hell of it just to see what happens. "Waiting for eth0... OK" "Configuring eth0 with DHCP... _" I think I need to read trough that after a ciggy + coffee break :)
[0:11] <gnarface> linux is very far behind microsoft and apple in the "do what i mean" technology cateogry
[0:12] <frank1e> yes I will ask. thanks in advance for taking the time to help!
[0:12] <gnarface> no problem.
[0:12] <frank1e> this is why Im in here since I got my Pi. ;)
[0:12] <frank1e> asking asking asking all the time.
[0:12] <gnarface> you'll get there, it just take patience
[0:13] <gnarface> when i started on linux, i solidly hosed my first 7 installs at a rate of about one per month before i learned how to not make a mess :)
[0:14] <gnarface> sometime after that i learned to keep backups before doing anything risky
[0:17] <frank1e> yes sure backups are important
[0:18] <frank1e> but before I am starting to let my pi store anything important I know that it runs reliable. so no need for a backup now because everything on it is basicly just useless data for me.
[0:18] <gnarface> fair enough
[0:20] <frank1e> storing my bitcoin hot wallet is far far away from where I am now

[0:29] <frank1e> okay so Im configuring network now
[0:30] <frank1e> now the content of the sd card isnt visible anymore so I cant edit the config file. what.gif
[0:30] <gnarface> uh
[0:30] <gnarface> yea you'll have to start over
[0:30] <gnarface> it reformats itself
[0:31] <gnarface> as a first step
[0:31] <frank1e> yes had this in the past too
[0:31] <frank1e> formatting fat32 again now :>
[0:31] <gnarface> so format it fat32 again and re-unzip those zip files, this time make sure the network is set up right before you boot it again
[0:32] * eaj (~eaj@cpc3-woki7-2-0-cust177.6-2.cable.virginm.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 268 seconds)
[0:32] <frank1e> yup
[0:32] <gnarface> in theory you should be able to access those files on OS X even after the reformatting begins, but unfortunately i can only really walk you through the process on linux
[0:32] <frank1e> wanted to check out what happens on first boot without configuring
[0:32] <gnarface> well, if you know enough about your router, it may be easier to configure DHCP
[0:32] <gnarface> but ... i mean.. i don't know how much you know about your local network
[0:32] <gnarface> are you on an office LAN or something?
[0:32] <frank1e> hold your horses: I dont know anything about network or even my router :>
[0:33] <gnarface> you are doing this with ethernet, not wireless, right?
[0:33] <frank1e> Im in my office with my standard lan/wlan router
[0:33] <frank1e> ethernet right
[0:33] <frank1e> because. ethernet. :P
[0:33] <gnarface> ok, well we can use your mac to infer several important things about your network
[0:33] <frank1e> putting a cable into your device is like sex. connecting to a wireless network is just like watching porn.
[0:34] <gnarface> i agree ;)
[0:35] <frank1e> http://pastebin.com/ZAF09UBA
[0:35] <frank1e> this is the config right now
[0:35] <frank1e> pasted it 1:1
[0:35] <frank1e> checking my router ip and stuff now... ugh :D
[0:37] <gnarface> ok for now lets not change anything there except the ip_ options
[0:37] <gnarface> if you pastebin the output of "ifconfig -a" from your mac terminal i can probably guess good settings for you
[0:38] <gnarface> how many other devices are on your LAN besides your mac and the pi?
[0:38] <gnarface> if they're the only two, that makes this slightly easier
[0:39] <frank1e> uh there are some
[0:39] <frank1e> a few wireless devices, maybe 3-4 different devices

[0:40] <frank1e> trying this one now
[0:40] <gnarface> hang on
[0:40] <gnarface> its important that you set something for ip_address too
[0:40] <gnarface> but its important that you don't use an ip something else is already using (dhcp is supposed to do this for you)
[0:40] <frank1e> ip_addr=dhcp

[0:41] <gnarface> you'll need at least one nameserver too
[0:41] * XpineX (~XpineX@93-160-241-126-dynamic.dk.customer.tdc.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[0:41] <frank1e> dns nameserver? or what do you mean
[0:42] <gnarface> yes, dns nameserver is what "ip_nameservers" sets. ... the broadcast, gateway and netmask should be the same as on your mac if your mac also uses ethernet. the wifi subnet might be different so if your mac is wifi don't just guess

[0:43] <gnarface> the command "ifconfig -a" (from the /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app program console) should give you a pasteable output of your current LAN configuration as your Mac sees it
[0:44] <gnarface> there is also somewhere in the apple control panel to see it but the fields aren't copy&pasteable as a whole and i can't by memory tell you how to get to it
[0:44] <gnarface> (i don't even think they call it control panel anymore and i know they changed the icon since the last time i used a mac)

[1:07] <frank1e_> and a disconnect
[1:07] <frank1e_> so I guess I got everything

[1:16] <gnarface> if you're ... under the influence, and can't FIND your terminal program on your mac, it should be in Applications/Utilities
[1:16] <gnarface> it should be called "Terminal" and have an icon that looks alarmingly similar to "Console" but should NOT be confused for it

[1:24] <gnarface> alright, 192.168.0.1 is probably fine for your gateway... that output is a bit unfamiliar to me
[1:25] <frank1e_> yeah its usual from what I know
[1:25] <gnarface> now you just need an unused ip
[1:25] * dwirc (~irc@d118-75-60-164.try.wideopenwest.com) Quit (Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
[1:25] <gnarface> it won't pick for you without dhcp
[1:25] <gnarface> and if its in use by something else, stuff will break
[1:25] <gnarface> you can check other numbers to see if they're in use currently by just pinging them
[1:26] <gnarface> but of course the risk is that if they're currently *off* (or blocking pings due to their own firewall restrictions) you may get a false positive and not know until later
[1:27] <frank1e_> got an unused ip
[1:28] <gnarface> frank1e_: its probably also worth noting that I think someone you trust implicitly is actively fucking with you. your failure to get normal seeming behavior out of the previous installation attempts is very possibly the result of active sabotage. primary suspects currently are 1) your network administrators and 2) that guy from teamspeak who told you to set your nameserver to 127.0.0.1 (doubly so if they're the same p
[1:28] <gnarface> erson)
[1:29] <frank1e_> afaik no one was involved in active sabotage on my device(s).
[1:29] <gnarface> if you can stay focused here, i may be able to help confirm this for you, but if they're monitoring this conversation and you're on their network, they can easily block me out or forge my responses to you
[1:30] <gnarface> based only on what you've told me so far i'd give it 50% chances against pilot error
[1:31] <frank1e_> oh man

[16:25] <Halberd1> Hello. Can I install raspbian to already partitioned SD card? I have one partition for OS and another for files which I don't want to be deleted.
[16:26] <shiftplusone> yeah
[16:26] <shiftplusone> but if you have to ask, it might be tricky.
[16:30] <Halberd1> Windows can see only the first partition. Whick is /boot. I'll have to do it from linux.
[16:33] <shiftplusone> definitely
[16:33] <shiftplusone> gparted will make things a lot easier.
[16:34] <shiftplusone> what's the other OS? You'll have a firmware and kernel conflict, since you will run both distros on the same kernel and both package managers will claim to own it.
[16:34] <shiftplusone> rarely an issue, but worth noting.
[16:37] <Halberd1> I have Raspbian, but I want to overwrite it with new installation.
[16:37] <shiftplusone> oh, that's much simpler
[16:38] <shiftplusone> delete the old files, mount the image (with the right offset) and rsync the files across.
[16:40] * stationweb (~narsene@85-169-173-132.rev.numericable.fr) has joined #raspbian
[16:42] <Halberd1> I'm not sure how to do that. I was thinking to dd the partition, deploy the image with dd and resize the partition with gparted to fit the remaining space?
[16:43] <shiftplusone> you have to consider that the image contains multiple partitions, so if you dd the image to the partition, without specifying the (correct) offset and block count or alternatively using kpartx, you'll end up with a messed up sd card.
[16:45] <Halberd1> Yeah, you are right, I wasn't thinking about that.
[16:45] <shiftplusone> run 'file' on the image
[16:45] <shiftplusone> you will see the start sector for each partition on it
[16:46] <shiftplusone> if you multiply the startsector of partition 2 by 512, you will get the offset
[16:46] <shiftplusone> then you can run something like mount -o loop,offset=whatever something.img /mnt
[16:46] <Halberd1> thats too advanced for me :-)
[16:47] <Halberd1> Is it possible to do it by formatting /boot and /root, then merge it to one partiton and then deploy the image?
[16:48] <shiftplusone> nope
[16:48] <shiftplusone> /boot must always be the first fat32 partition (for non-NOOBS installs)
[16:49] <Halberd1> yeah but it will be created again during install
[16:49] <shiftplusone> what install?
[16:50] <Halberd1> raspbian installation
[16:50] <shiftplusone> are you using an image or the netinstall?
[16:50] <shiftplusone> https://github.com/hifi/raspbian-ua-netinst ?
[16:50] <Halberd1> image
[16:51] <shiftplusone> I think I see what you're getting at. Just dd the image over the card as is?
[16:52] <shiftplusone> The issue with that would be that you'll overwrite the partition table
[16:52] <shiftplusone> not much of an issue if you can modify the new partition table to match the old one and then resize the root filesystem to fit it.
[16:53] <shiftplusone> but if what I said earlier is 'too advanced', then so is this.
[16:53] <Halberd1> I agree :-D
[16:54] <Halberd1> I will backup the data and recreate partitions.
