[12:50] <Halberd1> I have crashed my raspbian OS...again. :-( It loads to a blank screen and a mouse cursor is only visible. I won't load network config and start samba. wtf?
[12:51] <gnarface> Halberd1: what did you do?
[12:52] * eXtremo (~eXtremo@unaffiliated/extremo) has joined #raspbian
[12:53] <Halberd1> I remember I installed some app through aptitude from unverified source, it warned me about missing GPG key but I continued anyway because I trusted the source. I dont know if it is related.
[12:53] <gnarface> what was the app, and what was the source?
[12:54] <hifi> Halberd1: how do you shutdown the pi?
[12:55] <Halberd1> I return to terminal by pressing CTRL+ALT+F1 which works normally.
[12:56] <Halberd1> deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian wheezy main
[12:57] <gnarface> uhg
[12:57] <gnarface> you mixed debian sources with rassbian?
[12:57] <gnarface> i think that's a bad idea...
[12:57] <Halberd1> this was in sources list, and ofcourse it offered me some updates which I applied. I remember it installed newer version of wpa_supplicant and maybe some other network components.
[12:58] <Halberd1> :-D what should I do now? Is there any way to recover the OS?
[12:58] <gnarface> heh
[12:58] <gnarface> its hosed
[12:58] <gnarface> don't do that again
[12:59] <Halberd1> All that happened just because I tried to install latest version of Smuxi IRC client :-/
[12:59] <gnarface> well its the fact that you tried to install it from debian
[12:59] <gnarface> which isn't binary compatible with the pi's hardware
[13:00] <Halberd1> one of the dependicies related to Mono was unavailable so I tried to find it :-D
[13:00] <gnarface> some of the dependencies that it "upgraded" for you no doubt were vital to boot
[13:01] <gnarface> but... wasn't that irc client in the actual raspbian repos?
[13:02] <Halberd1> I'll have to make a clean install again after a week or so....
[13:02] <Halberd1> It is, but not the latest version. https://smuxi.im/download/
[13:03] <gnarface> well its probably the same version that was in debian wheezy
[13:03] <gnarface> and you probably don't actually need the latest version
[13:03] * andrew__ (6f5de77a@gateway/web/freenode/ip.111.93.231.122) has joined #raspbian
[13:03] <Halberd1> I followed their guide and messed it all up.
[13:03] <gnarface> but you *definitely* should have attempted to compile it
[13:04] <gnarface> there is a fairly simple process for backporting newer versions of things that is super easy in many cases if you work from the source package in debian sid or jessie
[13:04] <gnarface> compiling is slow unfortunately but if you do it right at least the result works...
[13:06] <Halberd1> Their solution seems easy. But the missing dependency...how can it happen?
[13:07] <Halberd1> I was some Mono library...
[13:07] <gnarface> let me get this straight... you want to upgrade to the bleeding-edge version of an IRC client that relies on Mono? on your PI??
[13:08] <Halberd1> Well it is meant to run on the Pi according to their website...otherwise it wouldn't be there.
[13:08] * rosapoP (~rosapoP@213-65-0-114-no185.business.telia.com) has joined #raspbian
[13:09] <gnarface> if they told you to use the debian repos i believe someone is mistaken
[13:10] <Halberd1> this is the one they recommend deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/meebey/ppa/ubuntu precise main
[13:10] <gnarface> hah ubuntu
[13:10] <gnarface> that's even more hilarious
[13:14] * mike_t (~mike@pluto.dd.vaz.ru) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[13:14] <Halberd1> I am confused completely...
[13:16] <Halberd1> Next time I'll try to compile it from source.
[13:16] <gnarface> Halberd1: i would recommend you do a fresh install then just use the version actually in the raspian repo until you find some way it is inferior in some practical way to whatever version they have up on their site as the latest version
[13:18] * aliocha (~aliocha@office.paris.yodog.fr) has joined #raspbian
[13:18] <gnarface> Halberd1: that will be much safer. feel free to compile from source if you *really* need the latest version (keeping in mind that if you can't off the top of your head name specific features it has that the raspbian one doesn't, then you almost certainly don't) but whatever you do, DO NOT MIX DISTROS that is suicide
[13:19] <Halberd1> :-) OK...lesson learned
[13:19] <Halberd1> but why there isn't the latest software in raspbian repository?
[13:20] <gnarface> same reason its not in debian wheezy repository
[13:21] <gnarface> basically its against their policy to needlessly upgrade across major versions of any software because it causes inevitable incompatibilities
[13:22] <gnarface> unlike in many other distros, in debian and raspbian "stable" (wheezy currently) the idea is that you should be able to safely do "apt-get upgrade" without worrying that software YOU created will suddenly break
[13:22] <gnarface> now, that's not always the case, but it is the case far more often than in other distros
[13:24] <gnarface> they actually *backport* security fixes as patches into existing versions rather than updating to the upstream version (which would risk introducing other undiscovered bugs/vulnerabilities)
[13:25] <gnarface> "stable" refers to frequency of ABI changes, not "how often it breaks" (though if you've spent some time with ubuntu you'll notice quickly the two are often highly related)
[13:27] * Xiguanda (~drtxus@98.Red-2-138-214.dynamicIP.rima-tde.net) has joined #raspbian
[13:27] <gnarface> there are also debian "testing" and "unstable" branches if you want to play with newer versions of everything, but as far as i know raspbian only currently goes up to "testing"
[13:28] <Halberd1> Unstable is Sid?
[13:29] <Halberd1> I'm actually a linux beginner but it is interesting to use it and learn.
[13:29] <gnarface> yes, unstable is sid
[13:29] <gnarface> unstable will always be sid, but testing eventually replaces stable periodically
[13:30] <gnarface> so while wheezy is currently stable and jessie is currently testing, one day jessie will be stable and there will be a new testing
[13:32] <Halberd1> Thanks, that's plenty of information. Maybe I should buy myself some literature about linux.
[13:33] <gnarface> you can do that but i think that the best information is probably freely available online just not well organized or advertised

[13:37] <gnarface> but its more difficult to get current information about linux in dead-tree form anyway
[13:38] <Halberd1> Is there any information about next release of Raspbian?
[13:39] <gnarface> well its also basically just a rebuild of debian jessie
[13:39] <gnarface> like the current raspbian is a rebuild of debian wheezy
[13:40] <gnarface> there might be info on here somewhere: http://raspbian.org/
[13:40] <gnarface> i'm certain someone else in this channel would know better than i
