[11:40] <ppq> no need for a display
[11:41] <Zertop> Thanks! I mean, I don't mind using a display for installation... I just don't want the distro to use resources on a GUI which I won't be using.

[12:28] <argie> hey there, I was wondering if anyone could shed any light on a little issue I'm having
[12:29] <argie> I've done some extensive googling to no avail :(
[12:29] <argie> basically, when my Pi reboots, raspbian doesn't recognise the usb hdd
[12:29] <argie> which is a bit of a bugger for automounting
[12:30] <argie> i can't see anything in the logs for it
[12:30] <argie> the odd thing is, it recognises it if I unplug & plugin the hdd manually
[12:33] <argie> http://raspi.tv/2012/how-to-mount-and-use-a-usb-hard-disk-with-the-raspberry-pi#comment-5820
[12:34] <argie> this guy seems to be qualifying my issue, but I can't find any potential solution as it is atm!
[12:34] <Zertop> Okay... how are you mounting the hard drive?
[12:35] * Halberd1 (~Halberd@5-43-177-80.dsl.optinet.hr) has joined #raspbian
[12:35] <argie> well, I tried an fstab entry
[12:35] <argie> but as it's not seeing the hdd on boot, it's no use
[12:35] <Zertop> OKay..... is the hard drive working now?
[12:35] <shiftplusone> argie, what kernel are you using? foundation or raspbian? (output of uname -a)
[12:36] <argie> Linux raspberrypi 3.10.25+ #622 PREEMPT Fri Jan 3 18:41:00 GMT 2014 armv6l GNU/Linux
[12:36] <argie> the hdd is working now
[12:36] <argie> manul mount -a reading /etc/fstab
[12:36] <shiftplusone> hm, no idea then.
[12:37] <Zertop> OKay cool - whats the UUID shown here for your /dev/*hard drive*
[12:37] <Zertop> ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid/
[12:37] <argie> i tried UUID in fstab, but uuid seems to change 0_o
[12:37] <argie> one sec, it's disappeared (forgot I rebooted!) one sec
[12:37] <Zertop> No thats not possible? How does it change :D Lol what? Did you re-partition by any chance?
[12:38] * Halberd1 (~Halberd@5-43-177-80.dsl.optinet.hr) has left #raspbian
[12:40] <argie> Actually, yeah, I think so. Might have been me being silly and repartitioning/grabbing uuid then rebooting, instead of repartition, reboot, then grab UUID
[12:40] * Alektos (~Alektos@93.147.96.15) has joined #raspbian
[12:40] <argie> for some reason it's being a little odd right this sec and not appearing at all :o
[12:41] <argie> if i reboot w/ hdd unplugged
[12:41] <argie> then plug it in, it works fine
[12:41] <argie> but it doesn't seem to appear at all if it boots plugged in 0_o
[12:42] * argie goes to pi to check
[12:45] <argie> ok: /dev/sda1: UUID="dd6c701c-199b-4402-a713-303fa0094677" TYPE="ext4"
[12:45] <Zertop> You sure? that looks like an internal drive?
[12:46] * Halberd1 (~Halberd@5-43-177-80.dsl.optinet.hr) has joined #raspbian
[12:47] <argie> yup i'm sure
[12:47] <argie> that's the output from blkid
[12:47] <argie> now if i try to mount using uuid in fstab
[12:47] <argie> i get:
[12:47] <argie> mount: special device UUID:"dd6c701c-199b-4402-a713-303fa0094677" does not exist
[12:47] <argie> *_*
[12:48] <argie> but it works if i try mounting /dev/sda1
[12:48] * plugwash (~plugwash@97e03ff4.skybroadband.com) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[12:50] <argie> AH
[12:50] <argie> silly me, was using : instead of = for identifying UUID in fstab
[12:51] <argie> mounts now using that UUID
[12:51] <shiftplusone> heh
[12:51] <argie> but still gots the issue of rasbian not seeing my usb hdd on reboot
[12:51] <argie> 0_o

[12:54] <argie> I've done that
[12:54] <argie> it mounts ok now
[12:54] <Zertop> hmmm.... on boot?
[12:54] <argie> it's just on reboot, raspbian doesn't seem to see the device
[12:54] <argie> nopes
[12:54] <argie> device doesn't show up in blkid / fdisk -l
[12:55] <argie> nor in /dev/disk etc
[12:55] <Zertop> weeird!
[12:56] <argie> I know :(
[12:57] <argie> I noramlly wouldn't be bothered, it's just the Pi is technically my parents & will be at their house....as technophobes I wanted to setup a mini DLNA streaming server for their house
[12:57] <argie> ....being the technophobes that they are, the concept of turn off, unplug hdd & plug in when ready...then mount
[12:58] <argie> not so good.... the only temporary solution I can think is make a cronjob to automount every 5/10min and tell them to unplug when rebooting - but that in itself seems rather long winded, you know?!
[12:58] <Zertop> I can imagine :D
[12:59] <Zertop> Why don't you try this... does the device power on at boot? (The HDD)

[13:01] <argie> okay, thank you very much for your time as it is!
[13:01] * argie will keep soldiering on
[13:01] <argie> (but yes, usb hdd appears to boot - although not very quick)
[13:02] <argie> maybe, the hdd isn't booting in time and therefore isn't reconised in the boot sequence

[13:09] <plugwash> I wonder if the driver module isn't getting loaded due to some glitch
[13:09] <plugwash> might be worth having a look through lsmod when the drive is not working and when the drive is working and seeing if there are any differences
[13:09] <Zertop> Oh Argie! Sorry, I came back cause I forgot something :D I think your issue is that your system waits for the hard drive to spin up, but finishes waiting before the hard drive is actually completed its spin up
[13:09] <plugwash> and if so adding the modules that are only loaded when the drive is working to /etc/modules
[13:10] <Zertop> Then it kind of forgets about it! So what needs to be done is force a wait for the drive
[13:12] <Zertop> Okay, why dont you go to fstab and add a nobootwait option - and see if that helps :D

[14:23] <argie> nope!
[14:23] <argie> now can't get it to recognise the hdd
[14:24] <argie> gonna remove the fstab line - for some reason i think the nobootwait has something to do with it
[14:24] <argie> I'm going to try and boot up now, plug in hdd and hope it recognises it! couldn't see it in lsusb last time
[14:25] <Zertop> yea, that just makes the pi wait for the hdd to spin up before continuing with the boot, you can remove it :)
[14:26] <argie> it appeared to do the opposite for me 0_o
[14:26] <argie> on boot, it said cannot find special etcetc
[14:26] <argie> special device *
[14:27] <argie> it's still dissapearing from usb list now

[22:05] * Budd (~eric@pool-72-79-199-96.spfdma.east.verizon.net) has joined #raspbian
[22:06] <Budd> I'm trying to use my edimax ew-7811Un to participate in an ad-hoc network, but mac80211 doesn't see it - just the ancient iwconfig.
[22:07] <Budd> Is there mac80211 driver for it, or alternatively can iwconfig be used to join an ad-hoc?
[22:08] <Budd> I set ad-hoc mode OK, but then setting the essid results in "SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not permitted."
[22:08] <Budd> which is a pretty cheeky thing to say to a root user.
[22:09] <gnarface> Budd: i've heard of some devices lacking the low-level driver availability for such features
[22:09] <gnarface> Budd: but i think in those cases there was usually a patch that could be applied with a recompile
[22:10] <gnarface> Budd: unfortunately that's the most specific information i can give you
[22:13] <Budd> ok, thanks.
[22:13] <gnarface> good luck
[22:13] <gnarface> if you find the right patch, people in here *can* help point you in the right direction to where to get kernel sources and such to recompile
[22:14] <gnarface> plan on it taking around 18 hours or more
[22:14] <gnarface> (the pi is slow at such things by modern standards)
[22:14] <Budd> Is it difficult to cross-compile on a faster machine?
[22:15] <gnarface> difficult is a pretty subjective term
[22:15] <gnarface> its harder than doing it all on the pi, but people do it
[22:15] <Budd> I've been compiling OpenWRT, but they've made that pretty easy, so I haven't learned the gory details.
[22:16] <gnarface> i think its one of those things that's only really difficult the first time
[22:16] <Budd> I should probably learn eventually, but perhaps not today.
[22:16] <gnarface> i've yet to actually try it though so unfortunately i can't help you with specifics there either
[22:17] <gnarface> the first one or two times you can just leave it going overnight and its not a big deal
[22:17] <gnarface> if you make a habit of this you'll definitely want to look into distcc, or a cross-compile environment or even qemu
[22:18] <gnarface> if you're already familiar with any of those setups, it should not be difficult
[22:18] <gnarface> but in and of themselves those are all some of the most difficult things to do in linux short of manually editing kernel code
[22:19] <gnarface> as i mentioned though, if you're gonna make a habit of this on the pi then they should pay off quickly in saved time

[23:12] <cjwelborn> hmm..searching for 'pypy' and 'sandbox' with dpkg, apt-cache, and synaptic didn't turn up a 'pypy-sandbox' or 'python-pypy.sandbox', however when I visited http://mirrordirector.raspbian.org/raspbian/pool/main/p/pypy/ I found exactly what I was looking for ('python-pypy.sandbox_2.2.1+dfsg-1_armhf.deb'), and successfully installed it manually. Is this not supposed to work? Because it did, and I'm wondering why I couldn't find it before.

[23:16] <plugwash> The package you found was intended for raspbian jessie

[23:21] <cjwelborn> plugwash: oh, I didn't realize. The one executable I was looking for, and its one package dependency 'pypy-lib' seemed to work okay. I guess I just got lucky.
[23:21] <cjwelborn> I had to manually install the pypy-lib also, but that was it.

[23:41] <cjwelborn> That particular package yields 'pypy-sandbox', 'pypy-c-sandbox', and 'pypy_interact.py'. pypy-c-sandbox is very tricky to compile on the raspberry-pi itself. It needs 2-4GB of RAM usually, so PyPy recommends cross-compiling it, which is a headache. Any package maintainers out there kind enough to backport it? I know I'm not the only one that needs pypy-c-sandbox on the pi, and the 'pypy-sandbox' executable is even better (easy way to run `py
[23:41] <cjwelborn> py /usr/lib/blah/pypy_interact.py /usr/lib/blah/pypy-c-sandbox <pythonscript.py>` correctly because the PYTHONPATH must be set just so.))

[23:56] <plugwash> mmm, native compiling on better hardware works too
[23:57] <plugwash> though that requires having said "better hardware" available
