[2:40] <MrHacks> Anyone have any luck pairing a Motorola Bluetooth keyboard with their raspberry pi or connecting Bluetooth Devices using a Broadcom BCM2046B1 bluetooth dongle?
[2:56] * lvispy (~luiz@177.131.93.225) Quit ()
[2:56] <gnarface> MrHacks: not as such, but a lot of bluetooth devices that *used* to work for me (one of them i think was even a broadcom dongle of some model # or other) in squeeze and earlier stopped working as of wheezy
[2:56] <gnarface> MrHacks: this was years ago now too
[2:58] <MrHacks> Mine is working. For some reason it is picking up the bluetooth signal off my Roku media player but not my bluetooth keyboard
[2:59] <gnarface> MrHacks: those symptoms sound semi-familiar
[3:00] <gnarface> MrHacks: my dongle actually "works" too technically; the driver loads, no bitching evident, can scan and ping and such, but transmitting data always comes through garbled
[3:02] <gnarface> MrHacks: though i would expect in that case it would fail to sync with any device, not just one of them.
[3:02] <gnarface> MrHacks: i don't really know though
[3:02] <gnarface> MrHacks: no problems with the keyboard and same BT dongle on x86 though
[3:02] <gnarface> ?
[3:03] <MrHacks> OK, I've just tried to have it pick up my Buletooth headphones (Motorola S305), and the Bluetooth dongle picked it up. So I can now verify that it is not the dongle but the keyboard
[3:06] <MrHacks> The keyboard's booklet said that If I wanted to sync it with a PC I should hold down V A R while holding down the power button. But this was not successful.
[3:08] <gnarface> try being closer to the pi (within 1 foot) when doing it
[3:08] <gnarface> MrHacks: ^
[3:11] <MrHacks> No luck
[3:11] <gnarface> MrHacks: well, many wireless type devices exhibit spurious or hysterical behavior with the pi due to the pi not supplying full USB-spec voltage. it was worth a try.
[3:11] <MrHacks> hcitool scan just won't pick it up like any of the other devices I have
[3:12] <gnarface> oh its bluetooth ip doesn't even show up?
[3:12] <gnarface> but you said it DID work on a PC right?
[3:12] <MrHacks> Nope
[3:12] <MrHacks> No I didn't say that
[3:12] <gnarface> oh, have you not tested this keyboard so far on anything besides the pi then?
[3:12] <MrHacks> I said my bluetooth headphones can be picked up
[3:12] <gnarface> did it ever work?
[3:12] <gnarface> (the keyboard)
[3:13] * prakriti (~prakwtf@12.116.104.118) Quit (Ping timeout: 258 seconds)
[3:14] <MrHacks> My PCs bluetooth services do not work at the moment due to them being screwed up by trying to get a Dualshock Sixaxis joystick to work, so testing it with that device is not possible at this time.
[3:14] <gnarface> i didn't intend to imply you should; i intended you should try it with the same bluetooth modem dongle you're using for the pi
[3:15] <gnarface> i assumed it was USB and therefore relocatable easily to any windows box
[3:15] <MrHacks> I use ubuntu on my home pc
[3:16] <gnarface> oh. :( well that's not gonna help as a control case then. ubuntu has been broken for about 6 months longer than debian in this regard.
[3:16] * likevinyl is now known as likevinyl[AFK
[3:17] <gnarface> don't get me wrong, the evidence that only the keyboard fails suggests user error or hardware failure as the most probable causes, i agree with that part
[3:17] <gnarface> its just that you seem to lack a necessary control case to be sure
[3:20] <MrHacks> Well, I have a tablet running CyanogenMod (another flavor of Android). When scanning for bluetooth devices, it picks up the keyobard as "Motorola Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard". However it will not pair with the device citing that it "Can't communicate with Motorola Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard".
[3:20] <gnarface> .... interesting
[3:20] <gnarface> that is curious
[3:21] * prakriti (~prakwtf@12.116.104.118) has joined #raspbian
[3:21] <gnarface> but for all i know that version of android has basically the same linux bluetooth drivers as ubuntu, debian and raspbian right now
[3:21] <gnarface> but you're right, it certainly does suggest a keyboard problem
[3:21] <gnarface> its got fresh batteries, right?
[3:22] <MrHacks> yes
[3:22] <gnarface> and nobody is running anything with heavy RF output (like an unshielded 80's air conditioner or a microwave oven?) nearby you are they?
[3:22] <MrHacks> nope
[3:23] <MrHacks> I initially bought this keyboard to work with my Motorola Droid Bionic, but I didn't have an HDMI mini connector to connect the phone to my TV.
[3:24] <gnarface> those are very cheap on amazon.com i think...

[3:35] <MrHacks> It works!
[3:36] <gnarface> hoooraaaay
[3:36] <gnarface> but you have no idea why?
[3:36] <MrHacks> This ctheroux guy just didn't include any of the "sudo"s that were necessary
[3:36] <MrHacks> Q
[3:37] <MrHacks> Also the folks at Motorola had not been entirely clear
[3:39] <MrHacks> You hold the power button down for five seconds on the keyboard THEN type V A R while the light is slowly blinking. You Need to do this during hcitool scan. If it doesn't find it, do some other command or the hcitool will not really retry
[3:40] <gnarface> well that would be good to know if i had one
[3:40] <gnarface> you should post that to the forum or something
[3:40] <MrHacks> The caps lock light does not light up
[3:40] <gnarface> other people may have run into the same problem
[3:40] <MrHacks> but I'm not worried about that.
[3:41] <MrHacks> I think the next thing I want to think about is remapping some of the keys that are on this keyboard
[3:47] <MrHacks> On the Motorola Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard (MBWK), the function keys have to have the special Fn key pressed down. The Escape key is Fn + Back key (Not backspace). There is no INSERT key which as a vim user it just means you have to initiate overtyping using the o command if I recall correctly.
[3:48] <gnarface> its i
[3:48] <gnarface> but that keyboard sounds like a pain in the ass
[3:49] <gnarface> after a couple experiments trying to buy "cute" stuff i finally realized its not worth it and that i should always just buy full-sized keyboards
[3:50] <MrHacks> It shouldn't be once I figure out how to remap the keys. The layout is in that goofy Mac keyboard shape though. (No Print Screen/System Request, Scroll Lock, or Pause/Break keys and no number pad)
[3:50] <gnarface> there are probably a number of ways to do it
[3:52] <MrHacks> Well, I'm going to take off and see if I can use this keyboard without my USB hub connected to this. Hopefully if there ever is a Raspberry Pi Model C, Wifi and Bluetooth are integrated.
[3:53] <MrHacks> Good night, and thanks for the help
[3:53] <gnarface> good luck!
[3:53] <gnarface> i didn't really help much...

[15:39] <Shardvexz> And you can't read FAT32 via your laptop, or the raspberry pi?
[15:39] <yves44> it seems that unreadle name contains illegals characters. On my rasp those name have '?' instead of '' for example
[15:40] <Shardvexz> crazyskeggy, http://michael.gorven.za.net/raspberrypi/xbmc
[15:40] <Shardvexz> Those instructions work

[15:44] <yves44> I use ssh command into bash to reach my rasp.
[15:45] <yves44> I think that all name which have special characters onto the fat32 partition, are renamed by samba (not really renamed on drive, on ly on the share folder)

[15:48] <yves44> why ? I think it's only encoding name, I have to configure that on samba, but I don't know how... I don't want to use NFS...

[15:54] <Shardvexz> The support on this channel is not very great sometimes :P
[15:57] <crazyskeggy> yves44: what sort of special chars are making the ?s appear?
[15:57] <yves44> French characters on files name like '...'
[15:57] <crazyskeggy> Shardvexz: thanks for helping get this working
[15:58] <crazyskeggy> yves44: can you make the same filenames on a windows machine if you have one?
[15:59] <yves44> when I connect to rasp I read name like 'List of ?l?ves.pdf', the real name is 'List of lve.pdf', and from my ubuntu on samba I read '1LOQ8P~W.PDF'
[16:00] <yves44> I don't have any. What was your suggestion ?
[16:01] <yves44> (when I plug the usb hard drive on my ubuntu, files name are well, even specials characters)
[16:01] * dougiel (~doug@S0106744401495b56.wp.shawcable.net) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[16:05] <crazyskeggy> yves44: unfortunately I don't have any FAT drive on me to test with either
[16:08] <yves44> I think it's my fat32 encoding which is not compatible with my rasp system
[16:08] <Jusii_> those ~w.pdf names sounds like you have mangled filenames on in samba
[16:08] * Jusii_ is now known as jusii
[16:08] * jusii is now known as Jusii
[16:08] <yves44> and so samba do a hash of filenames
[16:08] <yves44> yes that's it Jusii
[16:09] * taza (~zap@unaffiliated/taza) has joined #raspbian
[16:09] <yves44> I would prefer to have '?' instead of mangled filenames
[16:09] <Jusii> and for ? look for char encodings, utf8 on samba and on linux should do the trick
[16:10] <yves44> how can I set enconding ?
[16:11] <Jusii> https://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/unicode.html

[16:11] <Jusii> and linux should nowdays default to utf8 when mounting, but cifs has encoding options too afaik
[16:11] <yves44> thank you, i'll read it
[16:12] <Jusii> there's also a tool for linux that will rename your files and change the encoding of filenames. convmv
[16:13] <Jusii> just for reference cmdline I used to convert my old iso8859-15 filenames to utf8: convmv -f iso-8859-15 -t utf8 --nfc --notest -r absurdi_järjettömyys
[16:14] <Jusii> after -r it's just a directory name where to start

[20:51] <Odie_> vagrantc: ty
[20:51] <oskarholo> it is the 5V power
[20:52] <oskarholo> but i can try it without the fourth pin and use the external powersupply
[20:52] <vagrantc> oh, i've only used it with serial-ttl
[20:52] <vagrantc> does it do 5v? or is it the 3.3v ttl converter?
[20:54] <vagrantc> i think i've used this page before: http://elinux.org/RPi_Serial_Connection

[21:14] -kloeri- [Global Notice] Hi all. I'm going to do some very quick maintainence related to nickserv, chanserv and friends. Services downtime should be very brief. Thanks for using freenode.
[21:14] * Keean (54d37296@gateway/web/freenode/ip.84.211.114.150) has joined #raspbian
[21:14] <Keean> Hi, I just got my RPI and loaded raspbian on it. Everything works fine on the first boot, but once I reboot it doesnt work
[21:15] <Keean> I get a long list of errors, the last one being INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel
[21:17] <Shardvexz> My suggestion, rewrite raspbian to your SD card
[21:18] <Shardvexz> sounds like something got corrupted
[21:18] <Shardvexz> What did you do between your first boot and shutdown?
[21:18] <Keean> I have done that 10 times
[21:18] <Keean> Overclock
[21:18] <Shardvexz> and it is still happening?
[21:18] <Keean> yeah
[21:18] <Shardvexz> hmmm.
[21:18] <Shardvexz> What devices are you pluging into your pi
[21:18] <Keean> INIT: ID "2" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
[21:19] <Keean> a receeiver for my keyboard, RCA and aux
[21:19] <Keean> happens with HDMI as well
[21:20] <Keean> I suspect the SD card, I am using an old transcend class 2 card. Will try my DSLRs card now
[21:20] <Shardvexz> Well, it sounds like your inittab file is missing or corrupt
[21:20] <Shardvexz> IDK why that would be happening
[21:20] <Shardvexz> Oh...
[21:21] <Keean> I have very little experience with linux so it's kinda hard for me to troubleshoot
[21:21] <Shardvexz> me to. I'm just very good at google.com :P
[21:21] <Keean> I have tried google.com heh
[21:22] <Keean> But is it possible to run the OS off a USB instead of sd?
[21:23] <Shardvexz> No, the bootloader can only read the SDHC card.
[21:23] <Keean> oh, okay
[21:24] <Keean> and I'm using ApplePi-baker to "make" the sd card
[21:24] * mythos (~mythos@213.47.190.195) has joined #raspbian

[21:25] <Shardvexz> that's unmapped territory for me
[21:25] <Keean> I've only been using mac for 5 months, but I freaking love it
[21:25] <Keean> never goin back to windows or any other OS
[21:25] <Shardvexz> Well, the file is corrupted and the only way to fix it that I know of is to reinstall linux
[21:26] <Shardvexz> I'm not sure why it is corrupting though... the card, or another device you are pluging into your pi
[21:26] <Keean> I'm trying with another card now
[21:26] <Shardvexz> Or maybe you are doing something you shouldnt when you overclock it. IDK.
[21:26] <Keean> its a class 10 sandisk 32gb

[21:26] <Keean> happened when I didn't overclock as well
[21:26] <Shardvexz> ah
[21:27] <Keean> I'm aware that a pi isn't the best device for this purpose, but I want to use it as a minecraft server
[21:28] <Keean> that's why I want to OC it :P
[21:28] <Shardvexz> xD
[21:28] <Shardvexz> good luck.
[21:28] <Keean> thanks
[21:28] <Shardvexz> Standard minecraft, not minecraft-pi?
[21:29] <Keean> I told my friends that the server would be ready in one hours.....8 hours ago
[21:29] <Shardvexz> Yeah... but even if you overclock it, there will still be problems because of the low RAM :P
[21:29] <Keean> I won't run minecraft on it, just the server
[21:29] <Shardvexz> yeah, I never make promises regarding when I'll finish something on a computer. Computers are too finnicky
[21:29] <Shardvexz> ah
[21:30] <Shardvexz> yeah
[21:30] <Keean> ookay, trying the new card now. wish me luck
[21:30] * Shardvexz crosses his fingers, toes, arms and eyes =P
[21:31] <Keean> rebooting without any modifications
[21:32] <Keean> okay it booted without problems
[21:33] <Keean> overclocking now
[21:33] <Shardvexz> The first thing I always do on a pi is install tightvncserver so I can use the pi remotely :P
[21:33] <Keean> I use ssh+terminal on my mac
[21:33] <Shardvexz> I run an FPS server on my pi... and I vnc into it when I need to do something
[21:34] <Shardvexz> well tightvnc will allow you to view the gui/desktop
[21:34] <Keean> okay, it booted with overclock too
[21:34] <Keean> seems like the SD card was the problem
[21:34] <Shardvexz> what was that card you were using?
[21:34] <Keean> Transcend 4GB class 2
[21:35] <Keean> the card that works is a Sandisk Ultra 32GB Class 10
[21:35] <Shardvexz> sd or sdhc?
[21:35] <Keean> first one SD, 2nd is SDXC
[21:35] <Keean> sorry first one is SDHC
[21:36] <Shardvexz> OH
[21:36] <Shardvexz> http://elinux.org/RPi_SD_cards
[21:36] <Shardvexz> it is on the list
