[5:25] <batabatu> I'm having problems with raspberry pi corrupting my SD cards. I've tried different brands etc and have tested my power supply to ensure that isn't the problem. In my last test, I had everything running but when I issued the command "shutdown -r now" the pi never restarted. Is it possible that this command is somehow the reason that the pi corrupts the memory cards?

[6:29] <batabatu> i shutdown my pi using "sudo shutdown -h now" and wait a minute after the leds stop flashing. I pull the USB power and re insert it to boot the pi.... Nothing happens. The red power led comes on but no other activity. Any suggestions?

[6:30] <batabatu> I've repeated this several times now, each time I have to go and reformat the SD card. I've checked power supply, measured the voltage across TP1 and TP2 (5.09V) and checked the voltage drop across F3 (minimal).
[6:30] <batabatu> I've also tried several SD cards.

[11:07] <shiftplusone> vroomfondel: I don't see why not
[11:08] <ppq> vroomfondel, they will be detected as a block device (like a HDD). you can access it using a device file which lives in /dev. with this device file you can create a file system (fat32, in most cases) und mount it to a given path. on that path you can then access your files

[11:13] <vroomfondel> thanks, that is not what I don't understand. When I "dd" onto a SDcard, everything there is overwritten, right (unless I "skip" blocks)? That means, the partition table in block 0 and the filesystems inside the partitions get written verbatim from the in-file.
[11:14] <shiftplusone> yes, except for the space at the end of the card that's beyond the size of the image, of course.
[11:15] <vroomfondel> I saw some guys in the forums doing a mkfs afterwards but that is completely counterproductive in my eyes, it does overwrite what I dd'ed before, doesn't it?
[11:15] <shiftplusone> depends on what they're doing and why. Link?

[11:17] <vroomfondel> I am talking about a given Raspberry image. This one should be complete, with filesystems and all, right?
[11:17] <ppq> a mkfs does not necessarily overwrite any data. but it's not common to count on that outside of data rescue scenarios.
[11:17] <shiftplusone> Shoka's post? I think he's just talking about mkfs as a debug step he took to try to figure out what the issue he's having is.
[11:18] <shiftplusone> But yes, the image is complete with MBR and filesystems. No need to do anything extra other than resize it once you're written it.
[11:18] <shiftplusone> raspi-config can do it for you

[11:19] <shiftplusone> never
[11:19] <shiftplusone> write, sync, pop it in the pi.
[11:19] <vroomfondel> errmm...sync?
[11:20] <shiftplusone> literally the command 'sync'
[11:20] <vroomfondel> I umounted only
[11:20] <shiftplusone> you don't want it mounted in the first place
[11:20] <shiftplusone> In fact, make sure it isn't
[11:20] <shiftplusone> umount, dd, sync, done.
[11:20] <vroomfondel> ah...
[11:20] <shiftplusone> sync makes sure that the data is actually written and not just in memory.

[11:56] <quantum-x> hey, quick question - I've got a script I'm running to flick some GPIO pins. It uses a lockfile to determine if there's a concurrent instance, but because of the slight, but inherent dely between starting the program and checking the file, I'm seeing race conditions. What's a better way than lockfile? The other instance oesn't need cleanp, could I simply issue a killall to the other processes, if any, on program startup?
[12:03] <shiftplusone> I'm not sure that makes sense
[12:04] <shiftplusone> Why would you have a race condition between the time you start the program and check the file.
[12:05] <quantum-x> shiftplusone, well, because I'm seeing that in the procedure that checks if the lock file exists
[12:05] <quantum-x> and the part the removes the lock file - the lock has already been removed by another process
[12:05] <quantum-x> so it's inherently flawed :)
[12:06] <shiftplusone> You shouldn't have a situation where you have a lock that you can remove if it doesn't belong to you in the first place.

[12:13] <Halbard> Hi, plugwash is not here?
[12:13] <quantum-x> shiftplusone, all I am trying to do is fairly simple: if a concurrent process exists, nuke it.
[12:14] <shiftplusone> yeah, I got that part, but even that seems like the wrong approach.
[12:15] <quantum-x> well, the other is to write a daemon that does LED control, and then issue it commnds
[12:15] <quantum-x> that seems like the right way
[12:15] <quantum-x> but it also seems like a gateway to memory leaks :)

[20:35] <hellais> hello
[20:35] <hellais> what's the process of getting some piece of software part of rasbian?
[20:36] <ppq> know the right people and ask nicely, i'd say
[20:38] <hellais> so I guess it's ideal to introduce myself, I am a Tor developer working on an internet censorship monitoring project called OONI
[20:38] * twolife is now known as twolife`
[20:38] <hellais> we developped a tool called ooniprobe, that runs measurements from network vantage points that are of interest
[20:39] <hellais> the data collected is then made public and people make fancy graphs with them like: http://reports.ooni.nu/analytics/bridge_reachability/timeline/
[20:39] <hellais> we already have a raspberry-pi image here: https://github.com/anadahz/lepidopter, but was investigating a possible more "official" support for it.
[20:40] <hellais> we already inside of debian testing and have an ubuntu ppa.
[20:40] <hellais> and are inside of homebrew
[20:41] * ornevia (~ornevia@gateway/tor-sasl/ornevia) has joined #raspbian
[20:44] <diederik_> hellais: tell plugwash about it when he is online
[20:46] <hellais> ah, somebody from the sysadmin team just got back to me and they can say they can install ooniprobe with apt-get install ooniprobe on a stcok raspberry pi install
[20:47] <hellais> this happens because the debian repos are there
[20:47] <hellais> that is ooniprobe is in the debian repos, hence can be installed on a stock raspberry pi image
[20:47] * nils_2 (~nils_2@unaffiliated/nils-2/x-2480262) Quit (Ping timeout: 250 seconds)
[20:48] <diederik_> that's not really correct, but it can be done in your case
[20:48] <hellais> does raspbian always have http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ unstable/main armhf in /etc/apt/sources.list?
[20:48] <diederik_> (since it's arch independent)
[20:48] <hellais> or is this not standard?
[20:48] <diederik_> no, and that would ruin ppls os in most cases
[20:48] <hellais> ah ok
[20:49] <diederik_> debian armhf != raspbian armhf
[20:49] * hanfm (~Thunderbi@koln-4d0b2a71.pool.mediaWays.net) has joined #raspbian
[20:49] <hellais> so what would be the "official" raspbian way of doing it?

[20:49] <diederik_> you got the most important part ... getting it into debian
[20:49] * teran (~teran@broadband-109-173-61-206.nationalcablenetworks.ru) has joined #raspbian
[20:50] <diederik_> then to also get it into raspbian, is pinging the 'ftp-master' of it, which is plugwash
[20:50] <hellais> diederik_: I would also like it to have some additional behavior in the post.install script that is specific to raspberries
[20:50] <hellais> so that when you install it there it sets up a particular type of cronjob, as an example
[20:50] * ShmooliKipoD (~Thunderbi@bzq-84-110-1-229.red.bezeqint.net) has joined #raspbian
[20:51] <diederik_> there is a specific section in the raspbian archive which (I think) could enable that. But you really have to ask plugwash about it
[20:51] <hellais> got it
[20:51] <hellais> diederik_: do you know when I am most likely to find this girl/guy?
[20:51] <vagrantc> seems like that would be better done in a supplimentary package?
[20:52] <vagrantc> the raspbian-specific cron jobs
[20:52] <hellais> vagrantc: that would be painful to push into debian since our current maintainer is on a leave
[20:52] <diederik_> he often comes online during EU evenings/night
[20:52] <hellais> in general if it's to add to the existing package it's ok
[20:52] <hellais> but add new ones is currently a bit complex
[20:52] * teran_ (~teran@91.218.144.129) has joined #raspbian
[20:53] <hellais> unless we can add it to raspbian without adding it to debian
[20:53] <hellais> that is an option
[20:53] * vagrantc would find cron jobs only enabled on raspbian installs to be particularly annoying
[20:53] <vagrantc> YMMV
[20:53] <hellais> vagrantc: the cronjob is enabled by means of a prompt in the post.install script
[20:53] <hellais> and will be part of debian also
[20:53] <hellais> the thing is that I want a different cronjob in raspbian than I do in debian
[20:54] <vagrantc> prompts sound even uglier
[20:54] <vagrantc> depending on how implemented, debian policy violations
[20:54] <hellais> vagrantc: your feedback on this ticket would be greatly appreciated: https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/10734
