[7:33] <RyRys> I'm running with su atm, as that's what I thought you meant by elevated.

[7:49] <lost_soul> RyRys: the OS of the pi needs to run off the sdcard, however some people have noticed a speed increase running some things off of usb so you might want to give that a try

[10:19] <lost_soul> I agree that it should work, are you using the latest raspbian that came out a short while ago or the older version
[10:20] <lost_soul> if you are on the newer one... did you try on the older to see if it would install (perhaps it is a recent change to raspbian itself that messed things up)
[10:23] <Bierdieb_pi> well, im using jessie up to date. and i didnt try it on wheezy
[10:23] <Bierdieb_pi> in a forum there is the same error, the guy is mentioned to Turn off software upsampling. but how?

[14:10] <shiftplusone> just because something is in the repo doesn't mean it works
[14:10] <shiftplusone> it just means the package from debian armhf compiles without too much trouble.
[14:11] <Bierdieb_> lol.... why am i insane?^^ im just trying to make a repo package run.... thx for the hind :shiftplusone

[14:13] <Bierdieb_> will xbmc receive updates and stuff when installed that way?
[14:14] <Bierdieb_> hrhr^^ saving time is always a good invest.

[20:37] <shiftplusone> and what was the first error you saw? did apt-get complete without errors? did rpi-update run without errors too?
[20:37] <shiftplusone> finally, did you reboot properly (without yanking the power cable out) after you ran those commands.
[20:41] <fnawothnig> shiftplusone: the usb controller recognizes all attached devices, but disconnects everything then and right now it looks like it shuts down and no longer does anything

[21:01] <shiftplusone> if you ran rpi-update, you should have the modules as well

[21:03] <fnawothnig> what will that do?
[21:03] <fnawothnig> hm
[21:04] <fnawothnig> i suppose it will give me a kernel, an initramfs and modules?
[21:04] <fnawothnig> and firmware, tht is
[21:04] <shiftplusone> no need for initramfs
[21:04] <shiftplusone> and there isn't one included
[21:04] <fnawothnig> hm
[21:04] <fnawothnig> well
[21:04] <fnawothnig> so that's the problem.
[21:04] <shiftplusone> but aside from the firmware it will also update some pi-specific userland stuff
[21:04] <fnawothnig> i need initramfs to boot ;)
[21:05] <shiftplusone> why's that?
[21:05] <fnawothnig> rootfs is btrfs
[21:05] <shiftplusone> I thought you wrote you switched to ext
[21:05] <shiftplusone> and the official kernel doesn't have btrfs compiled in?
[21:06] <fnawothnig> huh? no, i switched from ext4 to btrfs after settings all of this up
[21:06] <fnawothnig> nope
[21:06] <fnawothnig> which is really questionable
[21:06] <shiftplusone> well, best of luck.
[21:07] <fnawothnig> i think btrfs is the only FS which should be used for devices like the pi, which experience hard shutdowns and removed sd cards while the system is running ,)
[21:07] <fnawothnig> (at least that is what i do sometimes - as btrfs protects me from any fs damage..)
[21:07] <fnawothnig> okay
[21:07] <fnawothnig> but one question
[21:07] <fnawothnig> the last line in my pastie
[21:08] <fnawothnig> "the new firmware is probably not backwards compatible with my old kernel and breaks the usb controller"
[21:08] <fnawothnig> reasonable assumption?
[21:09] <shiftplusone> I'd treat it as a possibility rather than assume it to be true. But if you had eth working on a B+ then you firmware would've been very recent anyway.
[21:09] <fnawothnig> i wasn't
[21:10] <fnawothnig> i never upgraded
[21:10] <fnawothnig> *it

[21:10] <fnawothnig> oh.
[21:10] <fnawothnig> i can force reinstallation
[21:11] <shiftplusone> so.... you had it installed before?
[21:11] <fnawothnig> don't think so
[21:11] <shiftplusone> ... then how can you force reinstallation of something you didn't have =S
[21:11] <fnawothnig> na i mean
[21:11] <fnawothnig> i didn't have it 1 week ago
[21:11] <fnawothnig> but i think i installed it during the upgrade process yesterday
[21:12] <fnawothnig> and i see that /lib/modules/*/* belongs to that package
[21:12] <fnawothnig> along with the firmware
[21:12] <fnawothnig> hm.
[21:12] <fnawothnig> okay
[21:12] <fnawothnig> what about this...
[21:12] <fnawothnig> i forgot the name
[21:12] <shiftplusone> Then you must've uninstalled it in the past.... I'm thinking that it's more likely that you didn't know it was installed and your firmware was automatically updated.
[21:12] <fnawothnig> but there is a tool to hot-boot kernels
[21:13] <fnawothnig> does the rasperrian kernel support that? ;)
[21:13] <shiftplusone> because I assure you that Ethernet would not work with old firmware on a B+, the routing has changed.

[21:16] <shiftplusone> yeah... or just compile btrfs into the kernel
[21:16] <fnawothnig> which will only work properly if i boot from the kernel from raspberrypi-bootloader
[21:16] <shiftplusone> or.... better yet.... use the raspbian kernel rather than the foundation kernel

[21:35] <ShorTie> and then reboot
[21:36] <fnawothnig> i'd still need to switch cards
[21:36] <fnawothnig> i'm talking about the case when it no longer boots
[21:36] <fnawothnig> well. okay. stuff is done.
[21:36] <fnawothnig> time for finger crossing and a reboot
[21:37] <shiftplusone> you're really describing NOOBS there.
[21:37] <fnawothnig> as it hangs it's looking good
[21:38] <fnawothnig> but still not sure if it just crashed
[21:38] <fnawothnig> or is really mounting the almost-64gb btrfs partition ;)
[21:38] <fnawothnig> hm
[21:39] <fnawothnig> no mention of initramfs having been loaded through
[21:39] <fnawothnig> strangely it just hangs now after detecting the ethernet device
[21:39] <fnawothnig> no error message
[21:40] <fnawothnig> so it looks like the way to use initramfs changed again

[22:26] <Martijn-NL> Hi Raspberry friends - i have a question. I want to play with the GPIO pins on my raspberry e.g. installing some leds and resistors etc. etc. Is there a kind of program for testing my elektronical circuit, so I cannot blow up my raspberry pi?
[22:28] <shiftplusone> Martijn-NL, there are all kinds of simulators, but you'd probably need to know more about electronics to use them in the first place that you'd need to know just to connect things safely in the first place.

[22:29] <Martijn-NL> shiftplusone: Can you give me a link to a simulator you recommandate? I know a little bit about elektronics ohm rule etc. etc, but for me it's a long time ago I play with this stuff.
[22:30] <AlphaTech> Martijn-NL: Check this out http://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/usage/gpio/

[22:30] <melroy> just wondering ...
[22:30] <shiftplusone> AlphaTech, 'gpio pins are on'?
[22:31] <AlphaTech> Isn't there a setting
[22:31] <melroy> does raspbian fit on a 4GB sdcard?
[22:31] <melroy> because the latest version of NOOBS doesn't fit anymore on a 4GB card (by default)
[22:31] <AlphaTech> shiftplusone: I thought there was a setting for that in advanced but I may be wrong
[22:32] <melroy> I see that the img file is 3.3GB
[22:32] <shiftplusone> AlphaTech, things like i2c and spi, yeah, but not plain gpio.
[22:32] <AlphaTech> Oh, sorry
[22:33] <shiftplusone> melroy, yes the image should fit on a 4GB card.
[22:33] <melroy> ok cool :) and keep fitting :P?

[22:36] <melroy> ok thx for the update
[22:40] <Martijn-NL> AlphaTech: Is there a simulator so I can draw a circuit on the GPIO and test if it works OK?
