[3:01] <batabatu> hmm, still having issues with my serial port on the Pi. Now to try and narrow down the problem, I've shorted out the rx/tx of the serial port and am trying to "loopback" for want of a better word. I'm running a terminal program on the pi and connecting to /dev/ttyAMA0. I do get a login prompt, but the cursor goes crazy and jumps over the screen. Also i try to type a username/password and some characters I type appear on the scre
[3:01] <batabatu> en but others don't. Any suggestions?

[3:12] <batabatu> klem: I think it's like a loopback, ie the pi is connected to its own serial port

[3:12] <batabatu> with the words truncated as shown
[3:13] <batabatu> then when I enter my password, the cursor just jumps all over the terminal for a while then comes back to a similar prompt
[3:14] <batabatu> I'm using 115200 as the baud rate, I can't really think what could be wrong.

[3:17] <batabatu> minicom
[3:19] <batabatu> I think I'm on the right track. This link http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=29554 mentions shorting rx/tx
[3:19] <batabatu> I think the serial port is another login option just like ssh over ethernet
[3:20] <batabatu> anyway that is really a side issue, I was just using it to test if the serial port was enabled. What I'm really trying to do is to connect my laptop to the pi via the pis serial cable
[3:20] <klem> I don't know, well try unshorting the rx-tx lines and if you don't get the pasword prompt that means that the rpi was sending it out

[3:22] <klem> so you are using the usb or the onboard io?
[3:22] <batabatu> Getting that login prompt was hopefully proof that it was, although the weird behavior described above doesn't inspire confidence
[3:23] <batabatu> I'm using the PC's usb, connected via the adafruit cable to the pi's serial port
[3:23] <batabatu> and running minicom on the PC
[3:26] <klem> ok, now I am really lost. you have an ibm/intel/amd PC with a usb to serial adapter, which is connected to an on-board serial oi of the pi and your running Minicom on the Window/intel machine with rs/ts shorted where?
[3:26] <batabatu> sorry for the poor description
[3:27] <batabatu> I have a linux pc connected to the raspberry pi using this cable
[3:27] <batabatu> https://www.adafruit.com/product/954
[3:27] <batabatu> i'm running minicom on the laptop
[3:28] <batabatu> and the cable is connected to the pi via the serial ports (part of the gpio header)
[3:28] * rafaelcpalmeida (~rafaelcpa@pa3-84-91-120-114.netvisao.pt) has joined #raspbian
[3:29] <batabatu> the cable is connected like this: https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruits-raspberry-pi-lesson-5-using-a-console-cable/connect-the-lead
[3:29] <klem> OK now it is starting to sound a little more understandable.....I don't do a lot with serial in Pi, but I do a lot with serial in Windows for PLCs and things. the cursor jumping around like wild usually means one of your ports has its settings unlike the other
[3:30] <batabatu> ah?
[3:30] <batabatu> ok
[3:30] <klem> buad rate, stop bits and parity have to be set the same on both the Linux box and the Pi
[3:30] <batabatu> so backing up a bit, the setup I just described to you is what I started out with. And I get nothing at all in minicom
[3:31] <batabatu> so I wondered what was wrong, had to eliminate the laptop, the serial port, the cable and the pi
[3:31] <batabatu> hence I unplugged the cable from the pi and shorted rx/tx on the pi itself physically using a jumper
[3:31] <batabatu> and then ran minicom on the pi, connecting to /dev/ttyAMA0 ie the serial port
[3:32] <batabatu> that's where I finally saw the login prompt but had the cursor jumping around
[3:33] * rafaelcpalmeida (~rafaelcpa@pa3-84-91-120-114.netvisao.pt) Quit (Ping timeout: 265 seconds)
[3:33] <klem> without the RX/TX short on the Pi do you get the login prompt?
[3:33] <batabatu> No. How could that happen?
[3:35] <klem> well I am trying to figure out if the software prompt was somehow software generated by the minicom or if it was reflected from the TX of the serial port. because the TX line doesn't know anything is attacthed ot it unless something sends to it first
[3:35] <batabatu> ah I had to press enter
[3:36] <klem> you have to press enter in the serial terminal before you got the password prompt?
[3:36] <batabatu> yes
[3:36] <klem> ok.....check your minicom settings and make sure your transmittion control is set to XON/XOFF or software
[3:36] <batabatu> but when I do the same thing from minicom (running on my linux laptop) and connected to the pi via the cable, I get nothing at all
[3:37] <batabatu> my settings are 115200 8N1 no hardware, no software flow control
[3:37] <batabatu> ill change it to turn on software flow control then
[3:38] <batabatu> still no joy
[3:38] <batabatu> I get nothing at all in minicom
[3:39] <batabatu> I wonder if the cable is faulty
[3:39] <batabatu> or maybe a driver issue for the cable
[3:40] <klem> are you trying from te PC or from the PI
[3:40] <batabatu> from the pc
[3:41] <klem> make sure you are on the right port....remember your PC box probably has at least 1 hardwired serial port, or may think is does even if it doesn't
[3:41] <klem> lsusb
[3:42] <batabatu> so the port is /dev/USB0 on the pc
[3:42] <klem> is that what lsusb returned
[3:42] <batabatu> Bus 001 Device 012: ID 067b:2303 Prolific Technology, Inc. PL2303 Serial Port
[3:42] <batabatu> that's what lsusb gave
[3:43] <batabatu> /dev/USB0 appears when I plug the cable in to the pc
[3:43] <klem> ok
[3:43] <klem> and when you short its RX/TX pins together do you get anything?
[3:43] <klem> paperclip
[3:44] <batabatu> I'll try that again, I'll unplug the serial cable from the pc->pi first
[3:44] <batabatu> it's awkward to short them out, I don't have a jumper. I've been using the pi cobbler cable from adafruit to a breadboard then shorting it on the breadboard
[3:46] <batabatu> "pberryp login:rasi "
[3:46] <batabatu> that's exactly what appears in minicom when I press enter
[3:47] <klem> does it do the jumping around thing?
[3:47] <batabatu> yes
[3:48] <batabatu> so to be perfectly clear, what I have right now is the pi's rx/tx pins shorted out. I'm running minicom on the pi with settings 115200 8N1 hardware flow control off, software flow control on
[3:48] <batabatu> the laptop and serial cable are not connected to the pi at all. I'm sshd in over ethernet to run minicom
[3:50] <batabatu> maybe I'll try another terminal program just in case it's minicom that's the problem
[3:50] <klem> what I want is for you to try the rx/tx pin shorting trick on both the Pi and the Linux box to make sure that 1. you have the right port addressed on both machines, that the problem is consistent on both machines

[3:52] <batabatu> So I short the pins on the cable and plug it in to the linux box and run minicom?
[3:52] <batabatu> ie I'm eliminating the pi from the equation?
[3:52] <klem> ok, we have 3 possible sources of the problem....1 the serial communications coming out of the Linux Box, ....2. the serial port on the Pi....3. Minicom software....yes confirm the linux box serial port is good
[3:53] <klem> or at least presents the same response as the Pi
[3:53] <batabatu> ok, I'll try that. To be crystal clear, I have the usb cable coming out of the linux box and have shorted the rx/tx together. I'm running minicom on the linux box and will see what I get
[3:54] <klem> yes please
[3:55] <batabatu> I get no output in minicom
[3:55] <batabatu> but I don't think there should be any
[3:55] <batabatu> how would there be a login prompt unless the linux box was configured to have one?
[3:56] <klem> if you connect and type you should see your typed characters reflected
[3:57] <batabatu> hmm I'm not
[3:58] <batabatu> could it be that the earth wire needs to be connected?

[3:58] <klem> if you hit enter then start typing and see nothing at all in Minicom that means there is a problem with the Linux box serial port...because the rx/tx trick works the same its on any machine its just a loopback
[3:58] <batabatu> hmm ok. It's not really a serial port, it's a usb port with a serial adapter cable
[3:59] <batabatu> with the PL2303 chip
[3:59] <batabatu> but I guess the same trick should work
[4:01] <klem> attaching the RX to TX is like mailing a letter to yourself. the keyboard presses go out the TX line and come back in the RX line...if you don't see anything you are either not sending them out the right line (port) or something is wrong in the path out and back mechanically/electrically
[4:01] <batabatu> hmm, so looks like either the cable, drivers or the usb port could be faulty or misconfigured then
[4:02] <klem> could be, I've never set up a serial port in a linux box
[4:02] <batabatu> should I have flow control set for this loopback test?
[4:03] <klem> no, if you want you can turn software on....but so long as you don't have hardware on you should be ok
[4:04] <klem> if you have a voltmeter you can check to see if the tx line changes value when you type, but if I had to guess I'd be suspicious of the linux box setup
[4:05] <batabatu> hmm it isn't working no matter what I try.
[4:05] <batabatu> Yeah I'm suspicious of that usb/serial converter'
[4:06] <batabatu> I know that there can be issues with them, I suspect the driver isn't correctly setup. Although the instructions claim there is no setup to be done for linux: https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruits-raspberry-pi-lesson-5-using-a-console-cable/software-installation-linux
[4:07] <batabatu> the driver is installed for the Pl2303 and lsusb shows the port as a "PL2303 Serial port"
[4:08] <klem> well, I've taken it as far as I can......we know where in hardware the problem is.....but I'm lost any further than that
[4:09] <batabatu> ok thank you for your help. I guess it was still odd that doing the loopback test on the pi didn't really work properly either. Makes me wonder if I wasn't doing the loopback test correctly
[4:09] <batabatu> It was odd to get the cursor jumping around the screen and the truncated login prompt
[4:10] <batabatu> and I never was able to actually log in

[22:11] <jdishere> hello
[22:13] <jdishere> I'm looking for RP debian image optimized for booting time (without GUI etc). Do you know where can I find it?
[22:13] <shiftplusone> debian or raspbian?
[22:14] <shiftplusone> btw the gui has no effect on boot time.... if you disable it, it doesn't add to the boot time.
[22:14] <jdishere> well I was sure raspbian is a debian build for RP
[22:16] <shiftplusone> sure... but it's not debian. You can run* debian on the pi, or you can run raspbian... do there are two very different answers your question and the question you asked is not for the answer you want.
[22:16] <shiftplusone> tldr, raspbian-ua-netinst
[22:16] <jdishere> right, GUI was just an example. My idea was that I don't need default stuff, just pure system
[22:17] <shiftplusone> same principle applies... don't start what you don't need.
[22:17] <shiftplusone> for extra points, use systemd instead of sysvinit
[22:17] <shiftplusone> and you should boot in ~15 seconds
[22:18] <jdishere> so I have to look for raspbian with build in systemd?
[22:18] <shiftplusone> not really, you can install systemd in wheezy or upgrade to jessie
[22:18] <jdishere> I have found ARMHF Image for Raspberry Pi
[22:19] <shiftplusone> I believe raspbian-ua-netinst will let you install jessie straight away
[22:19] <jdishere> but they reduced size, while I don't really care about size, I want to have fast boot time
[22:19] <jdishere> jessie?
[22:20] <jdishere> ok, didn't know there is sth new after wheezy
[22:22] <jdishere> one more question
[22:22] <jdishere> lets assume I will install raspbian-ua-netinst (with systemd)
[22:24] <jdishere> so, I will be able to change eth0 to wlan0?

[22:25] <jdishere> or I will need to install additional layer to handle wifi
[22:26] <jdishere> or it's kernel stuff and I dont need to do anything

[22:29] <shiftplusone> depends on the dongle, but most work out of the box
[22:30] <shiftplusone> on the official image anyway. If you use something else, you'll probably need to apt-get the relevant stuff
