[7:03] <shiftplusone> It's fine the way it is, just use ssh keys and disable password logins. If you want to go overboard, take a look at selinux and all the other things hardened gentoo uses.

[8:34] <HZLe> Hi. Can somebody explain me why there are 'raspi.list' and 'collabora.list' in /etc/apt/sources.list.d ? Differences to normal sources.list?

[8:36] <shiftplusone> raspi.list is for stuff from the raspberry pi foundation (raspberrypi-bootloader, raspi-config, rpi-update and so on)
[8:36] <shiftplusone> collabora is for the optimized epiphany browser and such
[8:37] * otter768 (~otter768@67.11.53.3) has joined #raspbian

[8:48] <shiftplusone> If you're a beginner, don't remove raspi.list.
[8:49] <shiftplusone> rpi-update is not important, but raspberrypi-bootloader is. You don't HAVE to use it, raspbian provides its own alternative, but there are a few things to keep in mind if you choose to do it that way.

[12:18] <shiftplusone> AndrewG, sorry... mind mind is gone into hiding for today.
[12:19] <AndrewG> OK. I'm guessing I didn't get the correct kernel sources or headers somehow.
[12:19] <shiftplusone> aha...
[12:19] <shiftplusone> hang on
[12:20] <shiftplusone> your module wasn't compiled against a Module.symvers for the kernel you're running
[12:20] <shiftplusone> AndrewG, output of zcat /usr/share/doc/raspberrypi-bootloader/changelog.Debian.gz ?
[12:21] <shiftplusone> the latest bit... should have 'firmware as of...' or something like that
[12:21] <AndrewG> Ah, that filename rings a bell. Hang on whilst I check (switching screens).
[12:22] <AndrewG> first entry: firmware as of 8aca5762, <asb@asbradbury.org> Sun, 15 Feb 2015 11:19:20 +0000

[12:24] <shiftplusone> that's the module.symvers you should use when compiling the module
[12:25] <AndrewG> OK, I'll get it and compare
[12:27] <AndrewG> Yep, not the same as the one I used.
[12:28] <AndrewG> Thanks. I'll rebuild the zfs sources.
[12:29] <shiftplusone> report back... I'm curious if it works.
[12:29] <AndrewG> I used rpi-source (https://github.com/notro/rpi-source/wiki) which did warn that it didn't work for the Pi2 kernel.
[12:30] <AndrewG> It will take a while - I'm buuilding on the Pi itself.

[13:10] <AndrewG> shiftplusone: I think the problem may be with the ./configure script for ZFS. It's working out the kernel source version by fishing things out of the built header files, but it ends up with "3.18.7+-v7" rather than the "3.18.7-v7+" which uname -r reports.
[13:10] <ShorTie> then calculate the offset from it

[13:14] <ShorTie> should be just like 'ls /'
[13:15] <erly> ok, i calculated the offset following an example which turned out to be exactly the same as my ase: so i guess the offset should be good

[20:24] <Neer-Do-Well> I think the price is the same on ebay or off, That isn't an actual Pi though its a knock-off, but it should work the same
[20:24] * dh64 (~dh64@174-21-94-253.tukw.qwest.net) Quit (Quit: Konversation terminated!)
[20:24] <facelessloser> i orded mine from http://www.tandyonline.co.uk/raspberry-pi-2-model-b.html
[20:26] <Neer-Do-Well> They are out of stock at Element 14, but they are $35.00 plus tax and shipping there
[20:26] <DropBear> yea, that's where I got mine from. Takes about 2weeks right now.
[20:27] <caxco93> the ones from Hong Kong are a knockoff?
[20:27] <facelessloser> caxco93, are you from the UK
[20:28] <caxco93> no. thats the problem. i live in perú.
[20:28] <Neer-Do-Well> I believe so. however the RPi is an open hardware device, anyone who wants to can make them

[20:33] <klem> I take back what I said, the RPi is not open hardware. and the pictures of the Pi on Ebay appear to be the same as the pictures on the raspberrypi.org site So my asssertion that it is a knock-off is baseless

[20:34] <caxco93> it says over 3000 sold
[20:34] <caxco93> and the shipping would be 9 pounds
[20:36] <sydney> :O
[20:36] <Neer-Do-Well> Its kind of high price, but if you're unwilling to wait for an American (continent not country) supplier to get them in, that is the price you will have to pay
[20:36] <sydney> 9 LBS?

[22:23] <Neer-Do-Well> Pidgin supports IRC
[22:23] <BOSIG> i got to choose what architecture i had, and since im new to linux i dont really know and didnt find any good info on what the r-pi2/raspbian uses
[22:24] <klem> http://www.recantha.co.uk/blog/?p=311
[22:24] * twolife is now known as twolife`
[22:25] <BOSIG> thanks ill try that

[22:29] <caxco93> do fake raspberry pi's exist? and im not talkin about stuff like banana pi, im talking about a product that is offered as a raspberry pi b
[22:29] <caxco93> for example but has lower memory or something like that
[22:30] <Neer-Do-Well> I don't think so, I was thinking of the arduino when I said the one you were looking at may have been a knock-off.
[22:30] * shay_shay (~shay_shay@unaffiliated/shawnbon206) has joined #raspbian
[22:33] <BOSIG> A bit off-topic. but can someone recommend a channel where i as a linux beginner can get help with basic stuff and questions?

[22:35] <Neer-Do-Well> generally whatever distro you are using will have at least one channel
[22:36] <Neer-Do-Well> search google for 'ubuntu irc support channel' or 'ubuntu newbies channel'
[22:37] <sydney> BOSIG: What distro?
[22:39] <BOSIG> well, im using raspbian atm on my r-pi
[22:39] <BOSIG> so for things that concern that distro i should be in the right place
[22:39] <Neer-Do-Well> oh well, there isn't an irc support room for that :P
[22:40] * iamfrankenstein (~Thunderbi@h90192.upc-h.chello.nl) Quit (Quit: iamfrankenstein)
[22:41] <BOSIG> some things confuse me. klem linked to a blog where the download link got me a .exe file. cant seem to install/open it. and unless im wrong i think that .exe are a windows thing
[22:41] <BOSIG> it was supposedly a pidgin install file
[22:43] <klem> no idea why that was there, I am here on a regular Linux desktop machine, I've never run an irc client on RPi, was just sharing a link
[22:45] <BOSIG> ok, well thanks anyway.

[22:47] <BOSIG> are r-pi distros much different compared to their full version, like Raspbian-Debian. also, are different linux architectures determined by the machine or software/distro?
[22:49] <Neer-Do-Well> RPi is very differnt. Linux was originally developed for desktop machines and it works pretty well on them. Sometimes and for some purposes better than windows

[23:02] <acidjazz> so im guessing none of my old raspbian images will boot on the pi 2
[23:03] <acidjazz> i need to start w/t he 2/16 raspbian eh?
[23:03] <Neer-Do-Well> I believe so, however they are currently optimizing a distro for the new proc as well
[23:04] * Almazys (~Almazys@ip-129.net-89-3-97.rev.numericable.fr) Quit (Quit: Good bye all ! :))
