[14:21] <ppq> you just have to settle for a protocol
[14:22] <Jaeger2k> yeah
[14:22] <ppq> uart is probably the easiest

[14:22] <Jaeger2k> and if i want to communicate with up to 4 rpis?
[14:23] <Odie_> what are you thinking of doing?
[14:23] <Jaeger2k> i want to create a matrix of rpis
[14:24] <Odie_> sure can be done, but if you have very little idea, it might be easier just to use ethernet or wireles network
[14:24] <ppq> then i2c or spi or something
[14:24] * darkbasic (~quassel@niko.linuxsystems.it) Quit (Ping timeout: 256 seconds)
[14:24] <Odie_> ethernet is da-easy way
[14:24] <Jaeger2k> eth is already in use
[14:24] <Jaeger2k> rpis just have to detect where they are
[14:24] <Odie_> and cannot be shared?
[14:25] <Odie_> you can like have multiple addresses for each device
[14:25] <Jaeger2k> na, its not that simple
[14:25] <Odie_> they ar enot connected to same network? how far apart are they
[14:25] <Odie_> ?
[14:25] <ppq> what do you mean by "detect where they are"
[14:25] <Jaeger2k> the rpi needs to detect another device north, west, east or south of it
[14:26] <ppq> wat
[14:26] <Odie_> :)
[14:26] <ppq> gps maybe
[14:26] <Jaeger2k> they arent far apart
[14:26] <Jaeger2k> they will be physical connected
[14:27] <Odie_> you can do communications over ethernet too
[14:28] <Odie_> if you wire them up via gpio, they still need to know how they are connected to each other
[14:28] <Odie_> so its same, but easier with ethernet
[14:28] <Odie_> as you have the bus ready
[14:28] <Odie_> you are like trying to make them into chain so that they need to talk via each other to reach the other end?
[14:29] <Jaeger2k> the communication consists only of "is a device n/s/w/e of me, and how is its name?"
[14:29] <Odie_> where does the device know this?
[14:29] <Jaeger2k> thru gpio?
[14:30] <ppq> i still don't get it
[14:30] <Odie_> you set jumper cables that tell the device that its in coordinates x,y,z?

[14:37] <Jaeger2k> http://i.imgur.com/W3ttEgr.png
[14:37] <Jaeger2k> ppq Odie_
[14:38] <Jaeger2k> this is just:" is there a rpi phisically next to me?"
[14:38] <ppq> ok, now i get it, so you assign the direction to a gpio connection
[14:38] <Jaeger2k> direction?
[14:39] <Jaeger2k> ah, yes
[14:39] <Jaeger2k> can the gpio ports be interrupt triggered too?
[14:40] <ppq> but in that case some point-to-point protocol is sufficient since only two pis are talking at the same time. i thought you were going to connect all five on the same bus
[14:40] <ppq> yes, there are interrupt ports
[14:41] <Odie_> you have speed requirements for this connection, or is it just enough to get something through?
[14:41] <ppq> http://wiringpi.com/reference/priority-interrupts-and-threads/
[14:42] <Jaeger2k> Odie_, umm, not really
[14:43] <Odie_> you could also simulate this with the ethernet
[14:43] <Odie_> like have one of the raspberrys to "know" the picture how each is connected
[14:43] * daszorz (~thomas@109.204.124.34) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[14:43] <Odie_> and each raspberry could ask it "is there someone north of me"
[14:43] <Odie_> "if there is, send hi"
[14:44] <Odie_> this would allow you to change the "wiring" with just software
[14:44] <Jaeger2k> yeah, but if the master pi fails, i have to elect a new one
[14:45] <Odie_> you could also cheat and copy the information to all of the noes
[14:45] <Odie_> nodes
[14:45] <Odie_> your software wouldn't use this information, but it would ask from the master process

[14:45] <Odie_> or do
[14:46] <Jaeger2k> Odie_, in my opinion this is a bit oversized to just transport a direction (on which side are you connected to me?) and a uuid (who are you?)
[14:48] <Odie_> the difference between these two methods is that the other one teaches you some electrical engineering and low level protocol skills and my suggestion teaches you software/networking
[14:48] <Jaeger2k> and with connected, i mean physically connected. imagine some tiles with rpis glued on them
[14:48] <Odie_> first is doing stuff that is visible (wiring) and the 2nd is software
[14:48] <Jaeger2k> Odie_, well I know software/networking pretty good
[14:48] <Odie_> do you plan to use this for something?
[14:49] <Jaeger2k> yes, decentralized transportition system
[14:50] <Odie_> p2p networking

[14:52] <Jaeger2k> imagine band conveyors on top of a rpi tile
[14:53] <Jaeger2k> the rpi has to detect if theres another tile next to it to not drop the piece its band conveyor transports
[14:55] <Jaeger2k> my question would be now what low level communication suits this at best

[17:51] <Haprog_> I'm trying to mount a USB HDD on my Pi 2 (Raspbian). First I tried it as exfat using exfat-fuse, but could only get it to mount read-only. Then I tried formatting it as ext4 and mounting, but seems that every time I unmount it something goes wrong, since after I try to mount again it says "wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1, missing codepage or helper program, or other ...
[17:51] <Haprog_> ... error .." then I can fix it with fsck.ext4 and can mount again after that.
[17:52] <Haprog_> It's an old HDD so it might have a problem, but the HDD seemed to work fine in Windows as exfat.
[17:52] * darkbasic (~quassel@niko.linuxsystems.it) has joined #raspbian
[17:52] <lordievader> Haprog_: How did you create the ext4 filesystem?
[17:52] <Haprog_> It first had only one exfat partition. I just ran: sudo mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda1
[17:52] <Haprog_> and first mount is always ok read-write

[17:54] <Haprog> yes
[17:55] <Haprog> but fsck.ext4 will fix it and then mount works one time again
[17:56] <lordievader> Haprog: What does fsck fix, and how do you unmount the drive?
[17:56] <Haprog> sudo umount /dev/sda1

[18:14] <Haprog> Maybe I'll just throw the old HDD to recycling. I'll to use my new 64GB USB3 stick instead for now.
[18:14] <Getty> it did its work.... it was a good harddisc
[18:15] <Haprog> and later buy a new 1TB+ USB3 HDD.
[18:16] <Haprog> I'll try exfat with the USB flash drive now.
[18:16] <Getty> would be actually interesting to checkup the power values of the harddisc
[18:17] <Getty> it might have been even a waste of money to use the 250GB in compare to buying a newer one
