[5:59] <__raven_> running raspbian with a tplink wireless device in access point mode. after a few minutes all clients get disconnected again until hostapd restart. i have "deauthenticated due to local deauth request" and "dhcpdiscover No working leases in persistent database - sleeping." in logfiles
[5:59] <__raven_> wlan0 and eth0 are connected trough br0 with NO local dhcp
[5:59] <__raven_> any idea where to look for the problem?
[6:00] <FreedomHouse> __raven_: wireless driver? Do you have another USB wireless adapter?
[6:02] <__raven_> no other device t'which works with the ap drivers
[6:04] <Encapsulation> if I want to have mail -s "This is the subject line" someone@example.com < body.txt the email address changeable by the user when running this can i change the way bash is run or do I need to have the user enter email store in a var and then edit a script file holding that command and then run it
[6:08] <FreedomHouse> __raven_: tbh, I have no idea. But I do remember that these things are relavtively badly documented. You're not next to a Marriott hotel? They sent out faked deauth requests
[6:09] <FreedomHouse> __raven_: I wish I could help more, but I gave up on troubleshooting WLAN and just bought a new USB adapter (non ap mode, though)

[6:13] <__raven_> no i am not. i have just the hostapd debug messages in syslog as descibed above. but at this issue: i set up this raspi as replacement to do wlan instead of a fritz box which also had random crashes an reboot. i was not able to debug this due to no logfile available but this behaves stable since i deactivated wifi on it
[6:13] <FreedomHouse> Encapsulation: I am not quite sure what you are doing. When I had to do it, I used "mutt" and stored my email credentials in its configuration to send out my email

[6:15] <FreedomHouse> __raven_: Switch to 5Ghz only and see if it's stable?
[6:15] <FreedomHouse> __raven_: if the offending device is only using 2.4Ghz that would isolate it from your network
[6:16] <__raven_> no ap is able to do 5ghz atm
[6:17] <FreedomHouse> __raven_: How abt this one: http://www.tp-link.com/lk/products/details/?model=TL-WA7510N
[6:17] <__raven_> and i dont know, _which device_
[6:17] <FreedomHouse> __raven_: I mean the device in your neighbourhood
[6:17] <ShorTie> almost sounds like a power problem to me .. :/~
[6:18] <__raven_> no theese are all private CLIENTS in my house
[6:18] <FreedomHouse> __raven_: Two options: Learn a lot about 802.11 and work through the source code
[6:18] <__raven_> ShorTie: no it isnt
[6:18] <FreedomHouse> __raven_: Triangulate the issue by isolating the root cause
[6:18] <FreedomHouse> __raven_: So start with one client, one AP and work your way up

[6:22] <FreedomHouse> __raven_: create a new SSID so none of your devices can connect to it. See if it still creates the same log entries
[6:25] <FreedomHouse> ShorTie: Want to take a guess why my sound drops over HDMI and my RaspPi B reboots while watching something? I have tried 5 power supplies and the current one seems to stay within 5V +- 5% and provides 1A in theory (Pi only needs 400mA if that USB voltage/ampere meter is right)
[6:26] * mike_t (~mike@88.200.241.32) has joined #raspbian
[6:29] <FreedomHouse> ShorTie: I did put cheap heat sinks on it. It's in a little plastic case. I dropped the CPU back to 700Mhz. I haven't spent any time on trying to fix it. I should probabl water cool it in the sink ;)
[6:29] <ShorTie> i'd guess the micro-usb cable
[6:29] <ShorTie> pi don't need no heat sink
[6:30] <ShorTie> have you ever actually measured the voltages at the pi with a meter or scope of some kind ??
[6:30] <FreedomHouse> ShorTie: In 30 degree + room temperature? It shouldn't hurt if it doesn't cause bad hotspots
[6:31] <FreedomHouse> ShorTie: Nope, just the "usd doctor" plug. Always forget to bring my multimeter home from work
[6:32] <ShorTie> does your micro-usb power cable have any wire sizes printed on it ??
[6:32] <ShorTie> is it small/thin and flexible ??
[6:33] <ShorTie> is it meant to be a phone charging cord ??
[6:33] <FreedomHouse> ShorTie: I did change it. It's now the one that came with my Smartphone and the 1A rated power supply
[6:33] <ShorTie> so that means like no, yes and yes
[6:33] <FreedomHouse> exactly
[6:34] <FreedomHouse> As you implied, that all helps to guess, but I have to measure it at the pi
[6:34] <ShorTie> so get a real cable with some wire in it, not to sound rude
[6:34] * pgs (~pgs@2001:44b8:313d:cb01:45e6:e39b:fab2:2db0) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[6:34] <ShorTie> you can loose a 1/2 volt across those cheap cables
[6:35] <ShorTie> which puts the pi at the threshold of not running
[6:35] * mike_t (~mike@88.200.241.32) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[6:35] <FreedomHouse> my pi2 runs nice and stable now for several weeks using the same power supply I used before on the "b"
[6:35] <ShorTie> so when you start really using the pi, drawing some current, it will drop below the required volt it needs
[6:36] <ShorTie> and the first thing the pi is drops the usb
[6:36] * mike_t (~mike@rv-cl-88-200-199-44.pool.tolcom.ru) has joined #raspbian
[6:37] <FreedomHouse> I used the apple ipad adapters first. Thinking, $39 for one, that should equal well engineered and stable supply
[6:37] <ShorTie> like in case with that ap of __raven_, that is why he needs to reconnect
[6:38] <FreedomHouse> ShorTie: the symptoms don't match. But my pi also has no load on its usb
[6:38] <FreedomHouse> Only the data cable pair is going to the hub
[6:39] <ShorTie> whelp, it's all a guess without actually measuring it's heart beat
[6:40] <ShorTie> you ever see the power supply they use at the foundation to run a pi ??
[6:40] <FreedomHouse> exactly
[6:40] <FreedomHouse> nope
[6:41] <FreedomHouse> http://juice4halt.com/
[6:42] <FreedomHouse> that might help ;)
[6:42] <ShorTie> i think it's in this video https://www.raspberrypi.org/introducing-raspberry-pi-model-b-plus/
[6:42] * Voovode (~Alex@tenatena.static.otenet.gr) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[6:43] <ShorTie> you will see a lab grade power supply, holding 5vdc is so important on the performace of a pi
[6:43] <FreedomHouse> biggest downfall of this product
[6:44] <FreedomHouse> But not a big deal in a classroom
[6:44] <ShorTie> biggest downfall of the pi is powering by that micro-usb
[6:44] * twolife` is now known as twolife
[6:45] <ShorTie> i understand why they picked it in the bigging
[6:46] <ShorTie> but the power requirment a pi needs now goes beyound what the micro-usb power wire contacts are rated for
[6:46] <FreedomHouse> I had components crashing/failing due to bad power supplies that powered a PoE injector which in turn powered the devices
[6:46] <ShorTie> the foundation recommends atleast a 2.5amp supply
[6:47] <ShorTie> and the micro-usb contacts are only rated for 1.8amps
[6:47] <ShorTie> Soo....
[6:48] * nopf (~frosch@static.142.192.47.78.clients.your-server.de) has joined #raspbian
[6:48] <FreedomHouse> if only usb would have sticked with 12V when they first designed it
[6:48] <ShorTie> http://www.raspberrypi.org/help/faqs/#powerReqs
[6:51] <FreedomHouse> Funny, my usb doctor ( www.ebay.com.au/itm/like/251761260375 ) never shows me that it pulls more than 500mA
[6:51] <FreedomHouse> even when decoding videos
[6:51] <FreedomHouse> but as I said, there is nothing on the USB ports
[6:52] <ShorTie> cool little toy, but it's not a real good test
[6:52] <FreedomHouse> I know
[6:52] <FreedomHouse> handy it is, though
[6:52] <ShorTie> because your measuring what is coming out of the power supply, not what the pi gets
[6:54] <ShorTie> i got 1 of these http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/361162327436?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
[6:54] <ShorTie> about the same thing
[6:55] <FreedomHouse> useful to get an idea and also good to identify when the supplled voltage collapses
[6:55] <FreedomHouse> and most importantly shiny
[6:57] <ShorTie> can you plug that into the pi's usb port and get a voltage reading ??
[6:58] <ShorTie> then you can like compare what is coming out of the supply to what the pi has

[7:00] * nopf (~frosch@static.142.192.47.78.clients.your-server.de) Quit (Quit: leaving)
[7:01] <FreedomHouse> That is a good idea
[7:02] <FreedomHouse> I actually just received a micro usb (female) to usb adapter A (female) adapter
[7:02] <FreedomHouse> if I put another cable in that (PSU -> micro usb cable -> adapter -> micro usb cable -> pi) I could see the voltage drop of the first cable
[7:03] <FreedomHouse> but the usb out voltage on the usb ports on the pi is a better idea
[7:06] <ShorTie> see, i like these http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/10pcs-Micro-USB-5-Pin-T-Port-Male-Plug-Socket-Connector-Plastic-Cover-for-DIY-GA-/181632803974?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item2a4a28a486

[20:34] <scoofy> the other one, i couldn't get working
[20:34] <scoofy> but the latter one needs powered USB hub
[20:35] <scoofy> that may also be an issue - some adapters need powered hub to work!
[20:36] <scoofy> Encapsulation: are you using powered USB hub?
[20:36] <Encapsulation> scoofy, no
[20:36] <Encapsulation> I've had the same model adapter work on my old pi though without powered hub
[20:37] <scoofy> that may be an issue... though not all WIFI adapters need powered USB hub, but the RTL8188CUS one definitely does
[20:37] <Encapsulation> =S
[20:37] <scoofy> yea, i hear not all need extra power
[20:37] <Encapsulation> powered hub wont fit in my case
[20:37] <scoofy> ok
[20:37] <Encapsulation> hmm
[20:37] <scoofy> just to rule out all sources of error :)
[20:37] <Encapsulation> and neither will the other large adapters
[20:37] <Encapsulation> but this is a new test
[20:37] <Encapsulation> I'll try it with a hub
[20:38] <Encapsulation> powered hub
[20:38] <scoofy> you can't lose anything by trying
[20:38] <scoofy> i find that some hardware/peripherals generally work more reliably with powered hub
