[0:31] <Stanto> That's just dhcp, you can usually setup dhcp reservation based d on Mac address

[0:33] <unitypunk> i just want both interfaces to have the same ip when they connect..
[0:33] * lnr (~lnr@aim.engr.arizona.edu) has joined #raspbian
[0:34] <unitypunk> they arent both connected at once.
[0:34] <unitypunk> i think you think im trying to use both at one time.
[0:35] <Stanto> The best solution is to use dhcp reservation on the Mac addresses so you know the IP or use nmap and scan for your pi, or look at the dhcp client table to tell you the ip.
[0:36] <Stanto> I do not think you're connecting them both at once, but if you have it set statically it won't matter if they're connected or not as they'll still have the IP set.
[0:37] <unitypunk> can i not set static ips PER access point?
[0:37] <unitypunk> im using wpa_supplication
[0:37] <Stanto> I don't know your network topology

[0:38] <Stanto> Well didn't you set it up ?
[0:38] <unitypunk> lol
[0:39] <unitypunk> i have a router, and a ddwrt bouncer due to poor signal, i can connect fine to the bouncer, but not the main point
[0:39] <Stanto> 'bouncer' ?
[0:39] <unitypunk> repeater?
[0:39] <Stanto> Depends how you've set up the hardware.
[0:40] <unitypunk> idk its a wrt 54g running ddwrt, it connects tot he main access point and has its own accesspoint, doesnt handle dhcp, passes it to the main
[0:40] <unitypunk> bridge?
[0:40] <unitypunk> i dont know the proper terms
[0:40] * dougl (~doug@S0106744401495b56.wp.shawcable.net) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[0:40] <Stanto> What would make sense is to have your main router, then if you have a wireless access point running dd-wrt, you tell that to to DHCP Forwarding from the DHCP server and it bridges it from LAN to WiFi
[0:40] <unitypunk> right
[0:41] <unitypunk> it does forward the dhcp info.
[0:41] <unitypunk> no subnet
[0:41] <Stanto> The default setup for ddwrt is to run as a gateway with NAT
[0:41] <methuzla> @themill can you do something about lnr ?
[0:41] <Stanto> So you'll have had to change the config for it to be doing dhcp forwarding instead.
[0:41] <unitypunk> sure is, but mine is set up as a reapater bridge
[0:41] <unitypunk> and i did
[0:42] <Stanto> Ok, now I have a better idea of your network topology
[0:42] * dougl (~doug@S0106744401495b56.wp.shawcable.net) has joined #raspbian
[0:42] <Stanto> So it's your dhcp server you should be messing about with, then.
[0:42] <unitypunk> linksys software is so awfull at serious things
[0:42] <Stanto> It's not a case of 'per access point' because whichever access point you connect to it's communicating to the same dhcp server.
[0:43] <unitypunk> so why when i change access points does it change lol
[0:43] <unitypunk> or... stop communicating
[0:43] <Stanto> Either the dhcp lease has expired or you're not doing dhcp forwarding
[0:44] <unitypunk> i can connect fine to the repeater, not the gateway
[0:44] <Stanto> Connect how exactly?
[0:44] <unitypunk> uhhh
[0:44] <unitypunk> idk it just happens at boot, i put all my settings into /etc/networking/interfaces
[0:45] <unitypunk> and /ect/wpa_supplication/wpa_supplication.conf
[0:45] <unitypunk> i assume it just brings up wifi at boot>
[0:45] <Stanto> You're not telling me if you're connecting via WiFi or you're connecting via wired each time you say you're 'connecting to it'.

[0:45] <unitypunk> oh wifi
[0:45] <unitypunk> etho is perfoming fine.
[0:45] <Stanto> right.
[0:45] <Stanto> Well assumably you have two WiFi access points in the house.
[0:46] <unitypunk> yes
[0:46] <Stanto> If you want to set it up so you don't have to care about switching them, they should be named the same, but on different channels.
[0:47] <Stanto> eg. If it's 802.11g, the SSID would be 'home' for instance, with one on channel '1' and the other on channel '6'
[0:47] <unitypunk> hmm i never tried to name them the same
[0:47] <unitypunk> they have the same WEP settings and passwords
[0:47] <Stanto> Ewww
[0:47] <unitypunk> just different essids
[0:47] <Stanto> stop using WEP.
[0:47] <unitypunk> wpa, sorry
[0:47] <unitypunk> wpa2-tkip+ccms
[0:47] <Stanto> right.
[0:48] <Stanto> What device is your main router?
[0:48] <unitypunk> linksys ea5400 or somthing
[0:48] <unitypunk> 4500?
[0:49] <Stanto> Right, so that's a dualband wifi router.
[0:49] <unitypunk> yeah
[0:50] <Stanto> I haven't read the manual, but some that are 'dual band' can only support either 2.4ghz or 5ghz at once.
[0:50] <Stanto> If you're not seeing that access point to connect to I'd say it's not running on 802.11g or 2.4ghz or both.
[0:51] <unitypunk> i can see the point
[0:51] <Stanto> right.
[0:51] <unitypunk> iwconfig says im connected
[0:51] <unitypunk> with my static ip
[0:51] <Stanto> You said you couldn't earlier
[0:52] <unitypunk> i said i couldnt contact hostnames.
[0:52] <unitypunk> i can ping 8.8.8.8 but cant ping google.com
[0:52] <Stanto> "i have a router, and a ddwrt bouncer due to poor signal, i can connect fine to the bouncer, but not the main point" was what you said, but ok.
[0:52] <unitypunk> im not connected fine to the main point...
[0:52] <unitypunk> well
[0:52] <unitypunk> kinda.
[0:52] <unitypunk> i dont know how to describe
[0:53] <unitypunk> im connected
[0:53] <unitypunk> i can get out to the wan
[0:53] <unitypunk> but cant resolve www.anything.com
[0:53] <Stanto> With the IP set to the same as eth0 ?
[0:53] <unitypunk> ip is set via interfaces line
[0:54] <Stanto> That isn't what I asked
[0:54] <unitypunk> idk i guess
[0:54] <Stanto> You guess?
[0:54] <unitypunk> when i plug in eth, i get the same ip
[0:54] <unitypunk> i havent messed with etho.
[0:54] <Stanto> Change the IP of your WiFi interface so it's different to eth0
[0:54] <unitypunk> only wlan
[0:54] <unitypunk> whats the point then?
[0:55] <unitypunk> i want my pi at the same ip
[0:55] <Stanto> Not gonna happen
[0:55] <unitypunk> wether wifi or wired
[0:55] <unitypunk> why?
[0:55] <unitypunk> wtf?
[0:55] <Stanto> Because networking
[0:55] <unitypunk> its happening right now on the other access point?
[0:56] <Stanto> Your router has a DHCP lease for your eth0 interface, so it knows on the network layer to find that IP address, it goes off and talks to it on that MAC address. Yet you're trying to do DNS over a different MAC address, it's possible it's getting confused when trying to talk back to your device.
[0:56] <Stanto> If you change your WiFi IP address and it works, then that's what the problem is
[0:56] <unitypunk> if i set it to dhcp i get a different IP and it works yes..
[0:56] <Stanto> There you go
[0:56] <unitypunk> but then my pi is "missing"
[0:57] <unitypunk> other things look for it at its proper IP
[0:57] <Stanto> Then you look at the DHCP client table or you do an nmap scan and find it.
[0:57] <Stanto> Or you have it register with a Domain Name Server local on your network and refer to it via hostname
[0:57] <Stanto> Or you use a samba share, I guess.
[0:57] <Stanto> share/protocol
[0:57] <unitypunk> man..
[0:57] <unitypunk> so confused..
[0:57] <unitypunk> that sucks..
[0:58] <Stanto> Networking doesn't work as you think it works because of the OSI layers
[0:58] <unitypunk> welll..
[0:58] <Stanto> Even if eth0 wasn't using dhcp to get its IP address and you set it statically, the router would have kept an ARP cache of where it had to go to communicate with it
[0:58] <unitypunk> im really bummed out.. not sure how to progress in my little project
[0:58] <Stanto> What was your project?
[0:59] <unitypunk> trying to make my server stay.
[0:59] <unitypunk> it runs mopidy
[0:59] <unitypunk> and i want it to be always at the same ip
[0:59] <Stanto> Then you'll have to keep it either wired or wireless, why would you switch between the two?
[1:00] <unitypunk> changing rooms
[1:00] <Stanto> why would you change rooms with it?
[1:00] <unitypunk> because i dont have a networked home stereo..
[1:00] <unitypunk> some times im in the living room
[1:00] <unitypunk> some times im in the garage
[1:00] <unitypunk> :)
[1:01] <unitypunk> i guess its just the way it is
[1:01] <Stanto> Uh
[1:01] <Stanto> You're using it as a music server, what're you using as a music client?
[1:01] <unitypunk> my android phone?
[1:01] <unitypunk> mopidy is open source sonos
[1:01] <Stanto> Then why on earth do you need to move the Pi around when your android phone can talk to it over wifi ?

[1:03] <unitypunk> change stereoss
[1:03] <Stanto> Uh, no?
[1:03] <unitypunk> the one in my living room doesnt play music in my garage.
[1:03] <unitypunk> yes
[1:03] <unitypunk> lol
[1:03] <Stanto> There's a piece of this puzzle that I think you're missing.
[1:03] <unitypunk> maybe
[1:03] <unitypunk> could be more then one.
[1:04] <Stanto> So if your phone is the client, that means that you just connect your phone up to your stereo via line-in, right? Your Pi doesn't need to roam at all because it's serving the files over the network, wired or wireless, to your client.
[1:05] <unitypunk> no..
[1:05] <unitypunk> the pi connects via line in
[1:05] <unitypunk> phone controls pi
[1:05] <Stanto> eww
[1:06] <unitypunk> have you ever used a sonos system?
[1:06] <unitypunk> its really neat..
[1:06] <Stanto> Yes, so what you actually need, is more than one Pi, in that case.
[1:06] <Stanto> Or you need to serve your music differently
[1:06] <unitypunk> in that case, what ill be really needing is more moeny.
[1:06] <unitypunk> ;)

[1:07] <Stanto> What you ideally want is your Pi to stream out your music over the network to your phone
[1:07] <unitypunk> eww
[1:07] <unitypunk> no
[1:07] <unitypunk> my phone has a tiny shitty speaker.
[1:07] <unitypunk> gorss.
[1:07] <Stanto> That's why you plug it up to the stereo.
[1:07] <unitypunk> lolol
[1:07] <unitypunk> you funny.
[1:07] <unitypunk> but then.. i have to leave my phone across the room
[1:07] <Stanto> Hence it wouldn't be using your phone's speaker.
[1:07] <Stanto> Get a long cable.
[1:08] <unitypunk> ROFl
[1:08] <unitypunk> just drag it everywhere
[1:08] <Stanto> Totes.
[1:08] <unitypunk> good plan
[1:08] <unitypunk> anyway
[1:08] <unitypunk> so thanks for educating me on how networks work
[1:08] <unitypunk> and why things are fucked
[1:08] <Stanto> Alternatively, just keep it on wifi all the time.
[1:08] <unitypunk> i thinkt hats what im gonna do
[1:09] <Stanto> np.

[14:12] <scoofy> should it have been '/bin/su pi -c <command>' ?
[14:13] <scoofy> can the first one block? and also prevent sshd running?
[14:13] <scoofy> i guess, when rc.local runs, no $PATH is set. so what happens when there's an unknown command? su is run as root, so it shouldn't block though
[14:14] <shiftplusone> PATH should be set, but it's relatively minimal. I don't know if it has /bin/, but I'm sure it does.
[14:15] <shiftplusone> does the command exit on its own or is it something you want running in the background?

[14:26] <shiftplusone> apt-get is used to manage all the packages (including a firmware one, on most installs)
[14:26] <shiftplusone> plus 'sudo apt-get update;sudo-apt-get upgrade;sudo apt-get dist-upgrde' has an extra, unnecessary step and a typo.

[21:05] <vagrantc> Tachyon`: you want to emulate x86 on pi 2 hardware?
[21:06] <Tachyon`> yes and qemu is capable of doing so, it can boot dos/win98 etc. install media and gets so far but there's a bug / problem with the hard disk image support, I create a 512MiB hardfile but fdisk has trouble writing to it, sometiems can partiiotn but then format fails etc.
[21:06] <vagrantc> maybe the underlying media is failing?
[21:06] <Tachyon`> it isn't

[21:07] <Tachyon`> if I had a bigger card I could try building from source -.-
