[1:35] <methuzla> charles3214 code is 22,23,24 diagram is 23,24,25

[1:37] <methuzla> charles3214 the second code block has indentation issues, and the delay is way too low for software debounce
[1:39] <methuzla> charles3214 in fact, sleep(0.1) may be too slow as well (and just noticed it has a ; in first code block)

[2:38] <charles3214> methuzla: thankyou I just noticed that myself :P code is now updated
[2:38] <charles3214> having bounce issues only now
[2:39] <methuzla> charles3214 link to latest code?
[2:39] <charles3214> http://pastebin.ca/3007741
[2:39] <charles3214> thankyou.
[2:41] <methuzla> you're still coding pin 22 which isn't hooked up per the hookup you linked
[2:41] * logan0405 (~pi@c-76-99-39-63.hsd1.pa.comcast.net) has joined #raspbian
[2:41] <logan0405> anyone have a way of running youtube on the pi?
[2:42] <logan0405> I'd rather not use the browser as its slow
[2:42] <methuzla> and you got rid of sleep() completely. you'll need that for software debounce
[2:42] <shiftplusone> youtube-dl and omxplayer
[2:42] <logan0405> can you search videos with youtube-dl?
[2:42] <shiftplusone> nope
[2:43] <methuzla> logan0405 youtu...nm
[2:43] <logan0405> darn. youtube dl sounds great I just want a way to search from command line
[2:47] <charles3214> sorry guys gave wrong pinout. I'm using 22,23 and 24 as GPIO in's. power and GND stay the same
[2:47] <charles3214> the buttons work just getting bounce
[2:48] <charles3214> like a billion inputs on press
[2:48] <methuzla> charles3214 add sleep(0.5) to your while loop
[2:49] <charles3214> what at the end?
[2:49] <methuzla> yes
[2:49] <charles3214> sorry im a shitty coder
[2:50] <charles3214> thanks. will it make it wait half a second every press? if using it as a volume control would it be painfully slow?
[2:50] <charles3214> also where does the sleep(0.5) go, do i indent it?
[2:50] <logan0405> ooh gpio pin volume control sounds fun
[2:51] <logan0405> what language is this
[2:51] <logan0405> python
[2:51] <charles3214> thanks logan0405 - i think a rotary encoder would be a better way tbh, but i need buttons for other stuff
[2:51] <charles3214> yes python
[2:51] <methuzla> charles3214 no, it will pause the loop for 0.5 seconds
[2:51] <charles3214> and do I indent it?
[2:51] <methuzla> charles3214 this is basically the most simple example of software debounce
[2:52] <methuzla> indent...in python....most critical
[2:52] <methuzla> so yes
[2:52] <charles3214> I don't get how tab moves things in really far, but most cost is only indented 3 or 6 spaces?
[2:52] <charles3214> cost* code
[2:52] * laza (~laza@b2b-130-180-1-210.unitymedia.biz) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[2:53] <methuzla> charles3214 one space is enough, any more is code style
[2:54] <methuzla> charles3214 more importantly, understand how/why python is using indent
[2:54] <charles3214> I have a lot to learn.
[2:54] <charles3214> i'll look up an indent tutorial after this.
[2:54] <charles3214> it works but only for the last button (24)
[2:54] <methuzla> charles3214 the whole indent thing is the biggest love/hate when it comes to python
[2:54] <charles3214> do i need to place it after each elif statement
[2:55] <methuzla> no
[2:55] * laza (~laza@b2b-130-180-1-210.unitymedia.biz) has joined #raspbian
[2:55] <methuzla> just once. at the end. indent the same as the last elif.
[2:56] <logan0405> Is it possible to set a lower resolution output from hdmi to my monitor?
[2:56] <charles3214> yay it works
[2:57] <charles3214> thanks methuzla i really appreciate it
[2:57] <logan0405> what did you make charles3214 ?
[2:57] <methuzla> logan0405 http://elinux.org/RPiconfig#Video
[2:57] <charles3214> I had it indented the same as my last print, not elif
[2:57] <charles3214> it's pretty laggy tbh, is that because of the 0.5 second wait?
[2:58] <methuzla> yes
[2:58] <methuzla> now try 0.1
[2:59] <charles3214> are there any solutions you know off the top of your head? I've read about looking for rising and falling edges to combat bounce, then sampling it every 0.05
[2:59] <charles3214> I will do that now methuzla
[2:59] <charles3214> getting double inputs at 0.1
[2:59] <charles3214> so bounce i gues
[3:00] <methuzla> that's the trade off
[3:01] <methuzla> search and read up on debounce solutions, no easy answer, there are both software and hardware approaches
[3:01] <charles3214> sometimes when i press the button (even after a long pause of 3seconds) nothing happens
[3:01] <methuzla> it's in the 3 second sleep
[3:01] <charles3214> dodgey switches or do i need better code?
[3:02] <charles3214> it's only got 0.2s sleep
[3:02] <methuzla> oh, thought you crank sleep up that high.
[3:02] <charles3214> no just 0.2 - so i dont get why sometimes NO input
[3:02] <methuzla> press and hold
[3:02] <methuzla> still no response?
[3:03] <charles3214> yeah it scrolls at 0.2s
[3:03] * darkbasic (~quassel@niko.linuxsystems.it) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[3:03] <charles3214> but it's like a 50/50 every time i press the button
[3:04] <charles3214> it's like gambling, best ive gotten is 5 presses with no response
[3:04] <charles3214> sometimes it does it every time
[3:04] <charles3214> weird
[3:04] <methuzla> whatever sleep is set at, it's going to sit there and do nothing for that amount of time
[3:04] <charles3214> yeah i get that
[3:04] * osxdude|MBP (~osxdude@unaffiliated/osxdude) has joined #raspbian
[3:04] <charles3214> each press i do is atleast a full second or 2 apart
[3:04] * darkbasic (~quassel@niko.linuxsystems.it) has joined #raspbian
[3:05] <methuzla> but for 0.2 seconds, it's not even looking at the buttons
[3:05] * logan0405 (~pi@c-76-99-39-63.hsd1.pa.comcast.net) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[3:05] <methuzla> if you press it in that window, it will get missed
[3:07] <charles3214> someone gave me a suggestion but I don't understand it
[3:07] <charles3214> here it is
[3:07] <charles3214> To re-iterate a point more strongly: Polling in userspace (particularly with sub 10 ms sleeps) when you can wait passively, indefinitely, on an interrupt from kernelspace is just silly. So rather than coming up with the "right" way to do things wrongly, you might want to consider aiming for the right way to do things the right way. Which is do not loop checking a gpio for changes of state. Block waiting for a callback.

[3:09] * osxdude|MBP (~osxdude@unaffiliated/osxdude) Quit (Ping timeout: 265 seconds)
[3:10] <methuzla> well, like I said, search and read up on approaches to handling debounce
[3:11] <methuzla> a good image to drive it home would be a scope trace of what the voltage looks like on the input pin during a button press
[3:12] * osxdude|_ (~osxdude@c-73-51-231-222.hsd1.il.comcast.net) Quit (Client Quit)

[3:12] <methuzla> it's kind of a mess (not a nice little square pattern)
[3:12] <logan0405> methuzla, resolution set worked great, thank ya!
[3:13] <methuzla> logan0405 glad it worked
[3:13] <logan0405> now only thing is, I want to switch window managers but I'm worried about volume & wifi apps.
[3:13] <logan0405> i love i3
[3:13] <charles3214> ok thanks methuzla have a good one
[3:13] <logan0405> but I won't have the convenient icons to switch between hdmi/analog output and search for network AP's
[3:13] <logan0405> and don't know the commands. can anyone point me in the right direction?
[3:14] <methuzla> charles3214 good luck, again, there's no one/best/easy solution. just various approaches with various trade offs.
[3:15] <methuzla> charles3214 and possibly using some things you haven't run into yet, like interrupts and callbacks and edge detects
[3:16] <logan0405> >when you think your washed pillowcase is a white shirt and spend 30 seconds trying to find arm holes

[14:24] <Nyctophilia> check if kodi-standalone is down and restart it? this thing should run at my parents house and even if i tell them to not shutdown kodi, they will...

[21:50] <scoofy> does Jessie even exist for rpi?

[21:54] <eggy> and I installed using the nework based installer, from this repo
[21:54] <eggy> wondering the repo's status I guess. if its still considered testing or stable, or what
[21:54] <scoofy> surely not stable yet
[21:55] <eggy> okay :)
[21:55] <scoofy> i've seen a few people complain about jessie issues (systemd errors etc.)
[21:55] <eggy> think with the rpi2, you can run official debian.. but I'm not certain
[21:55] <scoofy> yes you can
[21:55] <scoofy> as it has armv7
[21:56] <eggy> raspbain, from my understanding only came into existence because debain didn't support the original pi's arm chip
[21:57] <scoofy> yep.
[21:57] <scoofy> debian arm is armv7+
[21:57] <scoofy> pi1 is armv6
[21:57] <eggy> right, couldn't reacall if it was v6 or something else..
[21:57] <scoofy> v6.
