[0:00] * iktikn (~iktikn@5.147.17.213) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[0:03] <KD7JWC> shiftplusone: trying your advice now, thank you
[0:07] <UberSMPL> okay so after rebooting I can't even log in directly from the raspberry pi anymore! what a POS
[0:10] * clynamen (~clynamen@93-50-191-217.ip153.fastwebnet.it) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[0:13] * Techguy305 (kvirc@rrcs-71-43-208-2.se.biz.rr.com) has joined #raspbian
[0:15] * clynamen (~clynamen@93-50-191-217.ip153.fastwebnet.it) has joined #raspbian
[0:15] * ekinoxx (~ekinoxx-m@177.203.105.239) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[0:15] <shiftplusone> "Internet man has trouble with Linux. Blames hardware." sounds like a compelling story.
[0:17] <UberSMPL> I've been using linux for a while, Arch Linux mostly...
[0:17] <UberSMPL> Its a complete fresh install of Raspbian, just got the Pi in the mail today... so no changes have been made to it
[0:17] <UberSMPL> other than enable SSH
[0:18] <UberSMPL> and change password
[0:18] <UberSMPL> so keep coming with your stupid pointless smartass comments.. tiny man behind a computer screen
[0:18] <shiftplusone> yessum
[0:19] <KD7JWC> UberSMPL: and you are bigger for using foul language behnd a tiny screen? hmm
[0:19] <UberSMPL> foul language?
[0:20] <UberSMPL> (my screens are actually rather large, but beside the point)
[0:20] <shiftplusone> Come on guys, calm down. It's not the size that matters.
[0:23] <UberSMPL> The point behind this IRC chat is suppose to assistance/help/troubleshoot. Instead shiftplusone seems to use it as his own way of making himself feel special by responding to peoples frustration with pointless comments (childs play) if you're not going to help, then just keep your mouth shut.
[0:28] <shiftplusone> UberSMPL: I think you'll find that if you're not an entitled ass, I can be a very helpful person. If you come in here with "Wat is this POS!? how dare you shrug after answering the question I asked!? terrible user experience! I'm an arch user pro, I couldn't possibly have done anything wrong" before I even get a chance to type out the full response, like somebody owes you something, I really couldn't care less about your problems. Nobody
[0:28] <shiftplusone> is paid to be here and certainly not by you, so if the response is not to your majesty's satisfaction, get a refund.
[0:30] <UberSMPL> Did not come in here with that attitude you describe; I came in here frustrated and you just added full to the "fire."
[0:30] <UberSMPL> I said I was have a very bad experience with my first ever raspberry, and your response was "ok"
[0:31] <shiftplusone> Well why don't you take a breather and come back when you're ready to discuss the problem and not how you feel about it.
[0:31] <UberSMPL> and nomal person would have responded with a sense of compassion "It may be frustrating at first, but I'll be glad to help" or something along those lines...
[0:31] <UberSMPL> You're respond simply implied
[0:32] <UberSMPL> "who cares"
[0:32] * gbaman_ (~gbaman@dab-ell1-h-1-2.dab.02.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 255 seconds)
[0:32] <shiftplusone> Let's just drop it. You've posted on the forum, hopefully you'll get a more helpful answer there.
[0:32] * ed-ilyin-lv (~ed@80.232.240.7) has joined #raspbian
[0:33] <UberSMPL> I just don't understand how this could be a "user" error. I received everything in the mail today, formatted the new 32G sd, transferred NOOB installer over, and then connected the Pi to a ethernet cable/hdmi cable/and power (after inserting the SD.)
[0:34] <UberSMPL> then installed Raspbian... changed the password, enabled ssh, then rebooted.
[0:34] <shiftplusone> I agree, it's very odd.
[0:34] * jteneyck (~jteneyck@mn-71-49-89-4.dhcp.embarqhsd.net) has joined #raspbian
[0:34] <UberSMPL> I tried to SSH in, and it would not work... I made no other changes, nothing out of the ordinary, yet something as simple as SSH is not functioning
[0:35] <UberSMPL> And now I can't even log into the Pi directly... oh but now i can SSH into it via the ROOT user but not pi user
[0:35] * slavking (~col@cable-89-216-244-134.dynamic.sbb.rs) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[0:37] <shiftplusone> anything interesting in dmesg which might indicated corrupt data?
[0:37] <shiftplusone> *indicate
[0:38] <UberSMPL> its reinstalling Raspbian at the moment... going to start fresh, process of elimination by not changing the default password.
[0:38] <shiftplusone> UberSMPL: hang on, try using the raw image rather than NOOBS.
[0:39] <shiftplusone> The fact that you couldn't view auth.log as root already indicates that there's a bigger problem.
[0:41] <UberSMPL> its to late now raspbian install has completed.. and I enabled SSH.
[0:41] <UberSMPL> and now I can access the pi via SSH using the user pi
[0:41] <UberSMPL> :|
[0:41] <shiftplusone> enabled by default, so that step isn't really necessary, but it wouldn't do any harm.
[0:41] <shiftplusone> well, hurray
[0:42] <UberSMPL> yet still don't have permission to access auth.log
[0:42] <UberSMPL> err, scratch that, now its letting me.
[0:43] <shiftplusone> hopefully it wasn't the result of data on the card getting corrupted. Is it a fairly standard class 4/6 card or is it some fancy class 12 super xtreme ultra high speed card?
[0:43] * dougl (~doug@S0106744401495b56.wp.shawcable.net) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[0:43] <shiftplusone> there have been cases where certain cards would be prone to corruption
[0:44] <UberSMPL> Samsung EVO microSDHC UHS-I Class 10
[0:44] <shiftplusone> oh....eep
[0:44] <shiftplusone> that's one of those cards.
[0:44] <UberSMPL> ??
[0:44] <shiftplusone> since I know it by name
[0:44] <shiftplusone> if it happens again... you know why.
[0:44] <UberSMPL> No a reliable card?
[0:44] <UberSMPL> not*
[0:45] <shiftplusone> the card itself is fine, but there are (were?) some timing issues between it and the pi.
[0:45] * vagrantc (~vagrant@unaffiliated/vagrantc) has joined #raspbian
[0:45] * ChanServ sets mode +o vagrantc
[0:45] <shiftplusone> I believe the latest kernel may use a driver that doesn't have that problem which actually uses a different peripheral, but... cross that bridge when we come to it.
[0:46] * Alphard (~Alphard@unaffiliated/baronawesome) Quit (Ping timeout: 272 seconds)
[0:46] <shiftplusone> UberSMPL: https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware/issues/397
[0:49] <UberSMPL> Suggested card to use then? ScanDisk?
[0:50] <shiftplusone> I use these ones http://swag.raspberrypi.org/collections/frontpage/products/noobs-8gb-sd-card
[0:50] <UberSMPL> They don't sell/offer them in anything higher than 8GB?
[0:52] * Alphard (~Alphard@189.123.185.217) has joined #raspbian
[0:52] * Alphard (~Alphard@189.123.185.217) Quit (Changing host)
[0:52] * Alphard (~Alphard@unaffiliated/baronawesome) has joined #raspbian
[0:53] <shiftplusone> Nope. Personally, I use an external HDD for the rootfs where all the large stuff lives.
[0:53] <shiftplusone> and would recommend that setup if you've got data you care about
[0:54] <shiftplusone> sd cards in general aren't the best medium... lots of interesting points raised here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3GDPwIuRKI
[0:55] <UberSMPL> Only problem with that, the Enclosure I'll be building doesn't have the space for an external drive. I might be able to redesign it and add a slight space for a SSD
[0:55] <UberSMPL> but I would have to tear down the SSD to remove outside casing
[0:55] * jteneyck (~jteneyck@mn-71-49-89-4.dhcp.embarqhsd.net) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[1:00] <UberSMPL> Any reports or issues with the use of a SSD?
[1:01] * jteneyck (~jteneyck@mn-71-49-89-4.dhcp.embarqhsd.net) has joined #raspbian
[1:02] <shiftplusone> nope, but it's worth remembering that the pi has 1 usb bus, from which the NIC hangs, so you'd be sharing the bandwidth with the network and all other usb devices.
[1:02] <shiftplusone> On the pi 1, it would generate fairly high CPU load if you try to do too much at once, but that won't be a problem on your pi 2.
[1:04] * Smx (Elite8556@gateway/shell/elitebnc/x-ozvvtznlirkpbslp) Quit (Quit: EliteBNC free bnc service - http://elitebnc.org - be a part of the Elite!)
[1:04] * jpg__ (jpg_@gateway/shell/elitebnc/x-dmtefucqrjcxfjit) Quit (Quit: Quit)
[1:05] <UberSMPL> NIC won't be in use for this build; and I had hope to avoid usage of the USB as well.
[1:06] <UberSMPL> Will be using a GSM Breakout, as no Wifi access in the area the project/build will be stationed
[1:08] <shiftplusone> should be fine
[1:11] * rbelo (~ricardobe@unaffiliated/rbelo) has left #raspbian
[1:12] <UberSMPL> Wow $44 for a 32G SSD. This project may turn out to be more expensive than intended/hoped
[1:13] <UberSMPL> and I'll need at least 4 :(
[1:13] * mpmctoo (mpmctoo@gateway/shell/bnc4free/x-mupdahhefuqfncrd) Quit (Ping timeout: 256 seconds)
[1:13] <shiftplusone> Why not just go for a thumb drive?
[1:14] <shiftplusone> and why do you need so much space?
[1:14] * impure_hate (sorki@fedora/sorki) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[1:14] * mk2soldier (mk2soldier@gateway/shell/bnc4free/x-rxiyzedauaspllyj) Quit (Ping timeout: 248 seconds)
[1:14] * lazy_prince (~lazy_prin@hpm01webcache06-z.apj.hpecore.net) has joined #raspbian
[1:15] <UberSMPL> Need to have space for video to be stored; upto 24 hours of constant video feed.
[1:15] <shiftplusone> oh =/
[1:17] <shiftplusone> Seems like it's quite a bit of hammering for flash media. I'd use an HDD for that, but you mentioned space limitations and all that.
[1:17] * GitGud (~GitGud@unaffiliated/gitgud) Quit (Ping timeout: 255 seconds)
[1:18] * hid3 (~arnoldas@78.157.71.116) Quit (Ping timeout: 248 seconds)
[1:18] * rmarko (sorki@fedora/sorki) has joined #raspbian
[1:19] <UberSMPL> Well the 3D Model I designed to house all the parts (based on measurements found online for each part) didn't take into account for a HDD. I left a small gap at the bottom for "air flow" which I could probably fit a SSD (without case)
[1:20] <UberSMPL> might just have to take it back to the drawing board and make space for a HHD.
[1:20] * pablo_pi (~pablo@186.151.149.94) has joined #raspbian
[1:21] <UberSMPL> lol. doubt I'm going to find a low gig HDD anywhere
[1:21] <UberSMPL> I wouldn't need anything over 100

[19:47] <lala> Hello.
[19:47] <lala> I used git --version and it reported a relatively old version of git.

[19:47] <lala> I tried using sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade but it didn't update git.
[19:47] <lala> The git version it reports is "git version 1.7.10.4".
[19:48] <lala> What should I do?

[20:02] <lala> Eh...
[20:02] <lala> I feel ignored.
[20:02] <molgrum> lala: are you on jessie?
[20:03] <molgrum> i'm on jessie and have 2.1.4
[20:03] <molgrum> so.. upgrade! :)
[20:03] <lala> molgrum: I'm on Debian Wheezy.
[20:03] <molgrum> lala: just installed or?
[20:03] <lala> Just installed.
[20:04] <lala> Installed it 3 days ago.
[20:04] <molgrum> then yo ucan try out a jessie upgrade
[20:04] <molgrum> just do this
[20:04] <lala> Jessie?
[20:04] <molgrum> jessie is the latest stable
[20:04] <lala> So Wheezy is not the latest?
[20:04] <lala> Oh.
[20:04] <molgrum> edit /etc/apt/sources.list
[20:04] <molgrum> replace wheezy with jessie
[20:04] <lala> These names are kinda hard to follow sometimes. Sorry.
[20:04] <lala> Oh let me try that.
[20:05] <molgrum> and then just apt-get update upgrade dist-upgrade
[20:05] <molgrum> and reboot maybe :P
[20:05] <lala> I'm using SSH to my Raspberry Pi. Is that okay?
[20:05] <molgrum> i did it with ssh, but do you have a hdmi monitor?
[20:05] <lala> Eh... Do I have to use a monitor?

[20:06] <molgrum> just plug in monitor and keyboard
[20:06] <molgrum> and you have TTY
[20:06] <lala> I used that when I initially set up the NOOBS thing.
[20:06] <lala> What's TTY?

[20:07] <molgrum> and you have X as well
[20:07] <lala> Right... Hmm... Well...
[20:08] <lala> So I'll use edit or nano?
[20:08] <molgrum> but don't edit the stuff in sources.list.d
[20:08] <molgrum> that's what i've been told anyway
[20:08] <molgrum> i used nano
[20:08] <lala> molgrum: Okay nano it is.
[20:08] <molgrum> note: it will take a while
[20:08] <molgrum> what model are you on?
[20:09] <lala> Hm...
[20:09] <molgrum> i had the oldest model and it took maybe 2h
[20:09] <molgrum> i think
[20:09] <lala> I just got the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B.
[20:09] <molgrum> ah ok
[20:09] <molgrum> should be way faster then
[20:09] <lala> How long will it take?
[20:09] <molgrum> i cannot say
[20:09] <lala> It says "deb http://mirrordirector.raspbian.org/raspbian/ wheezy main contrib non-free rpi"
[20:09] <lala> So change wheezy to jessie?

[20:10] <molgrum> :P
[20:10] <lala> It says I need permissions...
[20:10] <lala> I need to use sudo.
[20:10] <molgrum> lala: yes
[20:11] <lala> Okay.
[20:11] <lala> I changed it.
[20:11] <lala> Now I use sudo apt-get update?
[20:11] <molgrum> yep
[20:11] <molgrum> i'm not sure if you can just dist-upgrade directly or you have to upgrade first. maybe H4ndy knows
[20:12] <H4ndy> I just edited sources.lst, apt-update | apt dist-upgrade
[20:12] <molgrum> then do dist-upgrade
[20:12] <lala> So I did sudo apt-get update.
[20:12] <lala> Now I do sudo apt-get diet-upgrade?
[20:12] <lala> dist*
[20:13] <H4ndy> yes
[20:13] <H4ndy> it will take about 1 hour
[20:13] <molgrum> H4ndyman
[20:13] <lala> Okie dokie.
[20:13] <molgrum> he knows
[20:13] <H4ndy> check from time to time, it will ask you some stuff
[20:13] <CookieNapper> h4ndy what's the dist-upgrade for?
[20:14] <molgrum> i said yes to every config it wanted to replace
[20:14] <lala> It says "708 upgraded, 382 newly installed, 14 to remove and 0 not upgraded.\m Need to get 466 MB of archives.\n After this operation, 14.0 MB of additional disk space will be used."
[20:14] <lordievader> lala: About your git story, wheezy is old. So the git in it's repo is old ;)
[20:14] <lala> \n
[20:14] <H4ndy> CookieNapper: it will tell apt to use latest version, not just minor fixes
[20:14] <CookieNapper> ah
[20:14] <lala> So it'll download a lot of stuff...
[20:14] <lala> Is that oaky?
[20:14] <lala> okay?
[20:14] <H4ndy> yes
[20:14] <lala> Okay thanks!
[20:14] <H4ndy> you are upgrading the whole system to the next release
[20:15] <molgrum> lala: i said yes to the config replacements

[20:16] <lala> Why isn't it Raspbian Debian Jessie?
[20:16] <molgrum> lala: i wonder that too...
[20:17] <H4ndy> will follow probably "soon"
[20:18] <lala> Do you recommend me using Raspbian Debian Jessie? Or can I just use stock Debian Jessie? Or Ubuntu Server 15.04?
[20:18] <lala> What's so special about Raspbian?
[20:20] <lordievader> lala: Do you have the newer RPi B v2?
[20:20] <lala> lordievader: Yes.
[20:20] <lordievader> lala: The original Pi used an older arm core which Debian and Ubuntu didn't support.
[20:20] <lordievader> On yours you can run stock Debian.
[20:20] <lala> Oh...
[20:21] <lala> lordievader: Are there any disadvantages of not running Raspbian?
[20:21] <lordievader> Don't know.
[20:22] <lala> Hmm...
[20:22] <lala> What do you run on your Raspberry Pi?
[20:23] <molgrum> i run a irc bouncer and web server
[20:23] <molgrum> and soon owncloud
[20:24] <molgrum> i hope :)
