[2:28] <benny__> Hello. I have a problem with Raspberry PI (model B)/Raspbian. Everything works fine, only one problem: Cannot boot the device until ethernet cable is plugged in. I want to configure it with twp USB wlan dongles, without eth cable, but until I connect the eth cable, the PI won't boot, and the LEDs remain red (with a litthe green fading and disapearing). I tried disabling eth0 in /etc/network/interfaces, tried changing SD cards, tried changing device (I
[2:28] <benny__> have two PIs), but the problem still persists. Can anybody help me?
[2:29] * jpg__ (jpg_@gateway/shell/elitebnc/x-kwafnkodsxzeeplp) Quit (Quit: Quit)
[2:35] <klem> Both Pis are doing it?
[2:35] <benny__> Yes
[2:37] <klem> were they bought at the same time? ( I have no connection with the manufacturer or anyone who sells R-PIs)
[2:37] <benny__> Any ideas?
[2:37] <benny__> Yes, bought at the same time.
[2:38] <klem> are you certain they are genuine?
[2:38] <klem> are you using the Raspian image from the RaspberryPi.org website?
[2:38] <benny__> Hmmm....no. But how can I distinguish them? Never heard about PI clones...
[2:39] <benny__> ùYes, that image.
[2:41] <klem> Did it come in a white and red (reddish) box that said Raspberry Pi on the top and Element 14 near the bottom?
[2:41] * YoY (~YoY@ltl56-2-88-169-169-201.fbx.proxad.net) Quit (Quit: Leaving...)
[2:42] <benny__> I think so, Don't remember the Element 14, thought.
[2:43] <klem> and does it have a raspberry printed on the board near the power connector
[2:45] <benny__> Yes, just checked, with (c)ù
[2:45] <benny__> SO, it seems it's genuine?
[2:45] * YoY (~YoY@ltl56-2-88-169-169-201.fbx.proxad.net) has joined #raspbian
[2:46] <klem> Probably is then. Try the Noobs download and select Raspbian when it boots......in fact juet see if it boots at all with noobs
[2:46] <benny__> I'd prefer a clone, but working. :-)
[2:47] * YoY (~YoY@ltl56-2-88-169-169-201.fbx.proxad.net) Quit (Client Quit)
[2:47] <benny__> I tried the (just released) FreeBSD 10.2, but seems to hae the same problem.. Not done thorough checking yet.

[2:53] <benny__> Already read, the only thing I'm not sure about, is the cable. As soon as I can,I'll try a thicker one, but this one is OK for tablets, so I don't think that's a problem.
[2:54] * b4tm4n (~b4tm4n@gateway/vpn/privateinternetaccess/b4tm4n) has left #raspbian
[2:54] <klem> let me check my pi with a wattmeter
[2:55] <benny__> OK.
[2:55] <benny__> BRB.

[2:59] <klem> My RPi + power supply draws 3.3 watts while booting and 3.1 watts with raspbian desktop idle. USB is only 5VDC so a 750ma power supply should do it, I would suggest at least a 1 amp power supply to be sure. The current rating should be printed on the side of the power supply that plugs into the wall
[3:01] <benny__> Well, since _after_ plugging the cable everything works well, I don't think the problem stays in the power supply. However mine is > 1A.
[3:02] <benny__> I tried It's kind of wake-up-on-lan problem, it seems...ù
[3:02] <klem> cool, well good experimenting then. Actually I suspect the cable was loose and so you didn't get a good enough ground till you plugged in the Ethernet cable
[3:04] <benny__> I tried to exclude factory defects, but now i'm not sure any mi

[3:05] <benny__> I'm not a RPI expert, but I have plenty of years of GNU/Linux experience.
[3:05] <klem> Are you using a newer Pi with a locking micro USB? or is that just on the B+ I don't recall.
[3:05] <benny__> ùLocking?
[3:07] <klem> the older Pi's used a standard SD card that was held in with friction, the newer (at least B+ model ) uses a micro usb that goes in and clicks in place, then to remove it you push on it again like a retractable pen
[3:07] <benny__> Then I have the older one.
[3:08] <benny__> ALready read those type of problems, and it's not related to mine. :-)
[3:08] <benny__> I am getting crazy l
[3:09] <benny__> ALmost two days.
[3:09] <klem> well not that I recommend kicking your RPi around but it should be able to be handled pretty roughly (6 inch drop test) without failure. except that the SD card might come loose
[3:09] <benny__> I know.
[3:11] <klem> however in your case I'm afraid I'm just about out of ideas, have you tried booting it with a USB wireless dongle? I don't think it would make much of a difference but it might, never know
[3:12] <benny__> Tried that also.
[3:12] <klem> did it make a difference?
[3:12] <benny__> Well, we are both out of ideas, but I appreciate a loto your effort to help me. :-)
[3:12] <benny__> No, no difference.
[3:13] <klem> and you have tried both a different USB cable and a different power supply
[3:13] <benny__> Right.
[3:14] <benny__> And as I told you, everything works OK AFTER pluging the eth cable....
[3:14] <benny__> I amabout to consider it a factory defect... :-(
[3:15] <klem> yeah me too, but it seems odd to have 2 Pi's with exactly the same defect.....I sill suspect that you're not getting a good ground on the power port either inside the Pi or from the USB cable
[3:15] * kradenn (~kradenn@pool-108-11-54-103.atclnj.east.verizon.net) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[3:17] <benny__> It would be strange, IMHO, that it starts working AFTER plugging the eth cable...

[3:18] * evilroots (~evilroots@50.141.111.17) Quit (Max SendQ exceeded)
[3:18] <benny__> If there'were a bad power, them it wouldn't work after plugging, IMHO.
[3:18] * Tachyon` is now known as Tach[Zzz]
[3:19] <benny__> Just console, without monitor, with SSH (after plugged in the cable). I also have hostapd and dhcp server configurednwith wpa_supplicant, everything woorking like a charm.
[3:20] <benny__> But the problemm that persists makes me crazy.
[3:20] <klem> I do a lot of work in analog, so I'm thinking of analog reasons. without a monitor you have to rely on the blinky lights to tell you when it's booted, have you checked that.

[3:21] <benny__> yes
[3:22] <benny__> However, never mind: I'll try to check with a friends raspberry and my power suppply (and vice versa).
[3:22] <klem> no mouse no nothing but power and it still wont boot
[3:23] <klem> OK, well sorry I couldn't help
[3:23] <benny__> But now that I am on holidays I wanted to use it. :-(
[3:23] <klem> That's the way it goes more often than not unfortunately

[8:06] <UMGeek> ...
[8:06] <lordievader> UMGeek: Is wpa_supplicant installed?
[8:06] <UMGeek> no
[8:06] <UMGeek> Cant install it without ethernet connection?
[8:06] <lordievader> Erm, network-manager?
[8:07] <UMGeek> no
[8:07] <lordievader> Heh, wicd?
[8:07] <lordievader> Or wi?
[8:07] <lordievader> Err iw*
[8:07] <UMGeek> no to both
[8:07] <UMGeek> no
[8:08] <lordievader> So you want to setup wireless networking without any userspace tools for managing your wireless nic....
[8:08] <UMGeek> there was a wpa_supplicant file though
[8:08] <UMGeek> but no wpa_supplicant function
[8:08] <UMGeek> ive modified the wpa_supplicant to have a wlan0 interface
[8:08] <lordievader> I'd install wpa_supplicant though a usb trannsfer.
[8:08] <UMGeek> I have a mac....
[8:08] <UMGeek> terminal connection?
[8:09] <UMGeek> or external USB?
[8:09] <lordievader> Download the deb, put it on a usb stick. Put the usb stick in the pi, install deb.
[8:10] <UMGeek> noob question, but deb?
[8:11] <UMGeek> .deb file?
[8:11] <UMGeek> https://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=wpasupplicant ?
[8:11] <lordievader> UMGeek: The debian package.

[8:15] <lordievader> Run lscpu to find out.
[8:15] <UMGeek> okay, thanks
[8:16] <UMGeek> Armv71
[8:16] <UMGeek> not what i was expecting
[8:16] <lordievader> Not?
[8:16] <UMGeek> armv7 or arm, not armv71
[8:17] <lordievader> armv71 is armv7 for as far as I know.
[8:18] <UMGeek> i'll go for iw
[8:18] <UMGeek> thanks for the help anyway
[8:19] <lordievader> You really want wpa_supplicant.
[8:19] <UMGeek> i'll look into finding the related files
[8:19] <UMGeek> thanks
[8:20] <lordievader> iw can probably do the job (even though I do not know how), wpa_supplicant is easier.
[8:20] <lordievader> wpa_supplicant + nm would be even easier.
[8:20] <UMGeek> Also, setting that up for a network that uses identity
[8:20] <UMGeek> i can do that in wpa_supplicant
[8:20] <UMGeek> and have done for raspbian

[8:27] <lordievader> Yes.
[8:28] <UMGeek> the only feasable ethernet connection would be a virtual one from my mac to the Pi or an ethernet connection with the ones at my university, and they are a bitch to configure
[8:29] <UMGeek> i had lots of trouble configuring it in Raspbian, doing it in Ubuntu will be a nightmare
[8:29] <UMGeek> and there is no GUI, it's all command line

[18:40] <totalconfusion> lordievader, thank you. how might I get the result I'm after then?
[18:40] <lordievader> totalconfusion: Use subprocess.
[18:40] <totalconfusion> does the rest of the code look like it'll work?
[18:41] <lordievader> If it ain't in the os module.
[18:43] <lordievader> totalconfusion: Please keep conversation in channel.
[18:44] <totalconfusion> Sorry I'm quite new to writing in Python. would something like this work in place of "sudo shutdown now -h"
[18:44] <totalconfusion> subprocess.call (sudo shutdown now -h)

[18:56] <lordievader> totalconfusion: It's better. Is your user authorized to call 'sudo halt' without a password? Else this will fail.
[18:57] <totalconfusion> I was thinking about this. no the user will not be super

[19:00] <totalconfusion> ?
[19:00] <lordievader> Though you can authorize your mortal user to perform that command.
[19:02] <totalconfusion> ok, I will look into that. is there perhaps another command that will shutdown without need for super user/password?
[19:04] <totalconfusion> also I'm about to jump into a book http://learnpythonthehardway.org/book/ - can you reccomend anything else or am I on the right track
[19:04] <lordievader> Meh, it might be possible through dbus. But it is easier to just modify the sudoers tab.
[19:04] <totalconfusion> thankyou lordievader I will do just that
