[16:55] <shiftplusone> plugwash: not much lately. I've been thrown at some Sense HAT work this week. Still waiting for external contributors, but I'll try to dedicate next week to getting the repo into a sensible state for minimal images.
[16:56] <shiftplusone> well, I think it is in a sensible state for minimal images, it's the GUI stuff that's a mess right now.
[16:57] <plugwash> AIUI the big issue is the hacked up version of ephiphany/webkit
[16:57] <plugwash> and also sonic pi (though I haven't seen a demo of what if anything the problems with that are)
[16:58] <shiftplusone> It is, but that's on collabora's end. I still need to sort out all of Simon's new changes
[16:58] <plugwash> is that understanding correct? also what exactly is the issue with sonic pi?
[16:59] * cyborg-one (~cyborg-on@130-0-62-179.broadband.tenet.odessa.ua) has joined #raspbian
[17:00] <shiftplusone> Sonic Pi stuff is up to Sam. If I recall correctly, at a minimum, it needs to be rebuilt against jessie versions of some libs. Sam would also like to switch to Qt5 and is now finding performance problems when running sonic pi for jessie on the pre-pi2 models.
[17:00] * noonker (~noonker@216.130.192.5) has joined #raspbian
[17:01] <plugwash> is that just a "built against jessie libs" version that is having the performance problems?
[17:01] <shiftplusone> I don't know, I only got a vague email from him about it this morning. Leaving it up to Simon and him since I have too much on my plate right now.
[17:03] <shiftplusone> (so you understand the dynamic, I only do the packaging, manage the repo and roll the images, Simon actually decides what goes in and so on)

[17:10] <plugwash> so I bug you in the hope you will bug them
[17:10] <shiftplusone> plugwash: it's a fairly flat structure here, so if you want me to pass something on, Simon is only a few steps away.
[17:11] * ShorTie thinkz, or a paper ball
[17:11] <shiftplusone> If the bugging is just "get jessie sorted!" then... yeah, that's already high up on the priorities list and there is an internal timeline.
[17:12] <tiblock> I have quiestion. If raspberry 2 succesfully loads from SD card then green light will blink? Currently i power it on and red light goes off in about half of second and only red light stays. But i know that i can have problems with that SD card, it is not very good.
[17:13] <tiblock> "red light goes off" i mean green light.
[17:13] <plugwash> on a normal boot with the raspberry pi foundation kernel the red light should stay on solid and the green light should blink
[17:13] <shiftplusone> tiblock: the red LED goes off? that shouldn't happen at all and would point to a power problem. Under normal condition, the green LED will flicker while reading from the SD card. It will remain on if the sd card is not found or does not contain the firmware where it's expected to be.
[17:13] <tiblock> plugwash, ah, thank you. Now i know what it should do
[17:14] <tiblock> shiftplusone, that was my mistake. It is green
[17:14] <plugwash> green light should go out/only blink occasionally once fully booted
[17:14] <plugwash> sounds like the firmware has loaded successully but the kernel hasn't

[17:51] <aib> I want to build a kernel module. Is there a package which would help me with that, i.e. provide me with headers?
[17:51] <shiftplusone> aib: I'd recommend looking at this for now https://github.com/diederikdehaas/cknow.org/blob/master/rpi/compile-kernel-module-on-raspberrypi.md
[17:52] <aib> shiftplusone: those guides all tell me to download the WHOLE kernel source, and from an external repository. Can't I use linux-image-headers or something?
[17:53] * mike_t (~mike@178.45.173.21) has joined #raspbian
[17:54] <aib> hmm ok, I've found linux-headers-3.18-trunk-all
[17:54] <tiblock> nice. I have fake SD card, it says its 8gb, but really there is 2.1gb
[17:54] <shiftplusone> the short answer to your question is 'no'.
[17:55] <shiftplusone> The slightly longer answer is 'depends on what kernel you're running'
[17:55] <aib> I'd rather use a kernel to match whatever headers package I have available
[17:56] <aib> is there an easy way to change the boot kernel version? RPi simply uses files on the FAT partition, IIRC. So it's not as easy as installing linux-image-whatever on my PC and updating grub. Are there tools to update the initrd etc. though?
[17:58] <TheLostAdmin> aib, you can define the kernel to load in the config.txt file.
[17:59] <aib> ah, that's better. Are the packaged kernels ready to be used in such a way?
[18:00] <aib> and by packaged kernels I mean those in the main repository, e.g. linux-image-42.42-rpi
[18:02] <TheLostAdmin> I haven't really played with it much. I think so. What I have figured out so far is that the FAT filesystem (usually mounted as /boot) is somewhat like the BIOS and boot sector of a PC.
[18:02] <shiftplusone> yes, but support is much more limited since a lot less people use those
[18:02] <aib> great.
[18:02] <TheLostAdmin> I haven't tried yet, but I think it can be configured to load the kernel from a TFTP server and mount root via NFS.
[18:03] <aib> by the way, I downloaded a linux-image-headers package and did make -C /lib/modules/${downloaded-version}/build M=${module-source-dir}
[18:03] <aib> got a ko, no idea if it'll work though

[20:40] <hadi> Hi guys. I know this is not a channel for supporting windows, But I'm trying to see what's happening with my micro sd card.. I want to rewrite raspbian to my micro sd card, but windows doesn't show my micro sd anymore after the previous operation by win32 disk imager
[20:41] <hadi> Last time it worked, I booted my pi, but now that i want to format the card and reinstall, The card is not showing up in windows at all
[20:41] <hadi> When i put the sd card into the pi it boots up properly though
[20:43] <holstein> well, it would seem like a bad card, but, you can always download a linux live distro, and do what you like with the card.. something live with gparted, for example

[20:44] <SCDias> hadi: And try https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/ but be sure if the right drive is select and don format anything else
[20:44] <SCDias> dont*

[20:45] <hadi> Thanks guys. I'll try this program first, then I'll have a fedora vm that i could install Do you think that'd have enough tools to do something with the card?

[21:37] <altin> anyone worked with RPi and an LCD and had issues with gibberish text showing up ?
[21:37] <Sos> i did and nope!
[21:37] <Sos> What kind of LCD do you have?
[21:37] <Sos> SPI?
[21:37] <altin> i have a 16x2 LCD screen using Adafruit library
[21:37] <Sos> are you using FBTFT?
[21:37] <Sos> oh that kind
[21:37] <Sos> then nope
[21:41] <altin> hmm
[21:41] <altin> anyone else?
[21:42] <TheLostAdmin> not me. I have a couple of spare 16x2 LCD panels that I was thinking of trying to connect to the Pi but I haven't even figured out what else I need yet.

[22:16] <niston> well
[22:17] <niston> when gibberish shows up on my serial LCD its usually due to synchronization problems or simply a wrong command byte

[22:17] <niston> if you dont have multiple threads writing to a single display, you can probably rule out sync problems

[23:47] <Creak> I'm trying to make Kodi works and I've got almost everything working except for some videos (codecs?). They are encoded in H.264 with AC-3. Other video in H.264 without AC-3 are played back fine, so I suspect this is an AC-3 problem... I activated the passthrough, but I still can't play these videos. Is there something I missed?
[23:48] <Creak> I tried to find a solution on internet for 2 days, but it seems that I'm the only one having this problem.. :(
[23:48] <Creak> I got a raspberry pi 2
[23:49] <Creak> right now my HDMI cable is directly linked to my TV that don't have AC-3 decoding, but I guess it's not really a problem, right?
[23:49] <Creak> I should at least see the image
