[13:23] <buncis> hello
[13:24] <buncis> I have a 10class micro sd
[13:24] <buncis> and i try to install rapsibian with dd but the speed is just 1.0MB/s is that ok?
[13:25] <rilapwn> 10class micro sd should be way faster.
[13:26] <rilapwn> check if your cpu usage is low, if so, try another SD card to be sure.
[13:26] <buncis> the problem is when i do the dd before, I forced shutdown my laptop while it still in progress
[13:26] <buncis> now is my second attempt and get 1MB/s
[13:27] <rilapwn> Which OS you use?
[13:27] <rilapwn> On your laptop w cardreader
[13:27] <rilapwn> You could try to clean your SD disk and repartition it.
[13:27] <buncis> with cardreader i don't have a usb adapter, i have a plan to fsck it after the dd
[13:27] <rilapwn> what OS?
[13:27] <buncis> microsd adapter i mean
[13:27] <buncis> ELementary os
[13:28] <buncis> 1022+0 records in 1021+0 records out 4282384384 bytes (4,3 GB) copied, 4235,12 s, 1,0 MB/s my last pkill
[13:28] <rilapwn> Seems like the SD card itself, no need to repartition it if you use DD.
[13:28] <rilapwn> If I were you I would try another 1

[13:29] <lordievader> buncis: What block size are you using to test it?
[13:29] <buncis> 4M
[13:29] <buncis> maybe the cardreader because i use random cardreader made in china

[13:31] <lordievader> You could do the same thing on another pc to see if the pc is related.
[13:32] <buncis> so should i force close my laptop again like before? or just wait it till finish?
[13:32] <buncis> 1166+0 records in 1165+0 records out 4886364160 bytes (4,9 GB) copied, 4831,89 s, 1,0 MB/s
[13:32] <buncis> i try to ctrl+c before but it just won't stop then i force shutdown my laptop
[13:33] <lordievader> Sigint doesn't stop it?
[13:33] <lordievader> That might be related.
[13:33] <lordievader> How old is the sd card?
[13:34] <buncis> brand new card, what is sigint?
[13:35] <lordievader> ctrl-c sends a sigint.
[13:35] <lordievader> Doesn't it quit after a while?
[13:36] <buncis> yeah i need to force shutdown
[13:36] <buncis> i have send ctrl-c
[13:38] <lordievader> Hmm, I guess that is related to the slow speed you are experiencing. However I don't know what might be the cause.
[13:38] <buncis> thank you anyway
[13:42] <rilapwn> if you need to force it just press Ctrl Z and kill the process with kill command
[13:42] <rilapwn> If ctrl C is not working
[13:44] <buncis> is that will damage my sdcard? i have decide to wait it till finish, because i already force shutdown my laptop while dd-ing before

[13:46] <rilapwn> it simply can not damage a SD card
[13:46] <rilapwn> as it just stops writing
[13:47] <buncis> ok thank you
[13:47] <rilapwn> every time you start writing with DD you rewrite your SD card including filesystem and partition table.
[13:47] <rilapwn> so even if your SD card would get corrupt it does not really matter as you will fix it when you use DD next run.

[15:31] <klem> If I had to guess I would say that FAT probably has better support on the silicon of the parts they were using. Honestly though I have no direct knowledge, one way or another.

[22:02] <YamakasY> BUT as I have a EEE901 PC left, that would be doing the same I guess
[22:02] <ktwo> Hey, i need to compile a driver, but i dont understand something.. how can i get the correct kernel ? is there no generic package for it? i only find some old 3.6 kernel

[22:07] <diederik> ktwo: a kernel upgrade will very likely break it, so you would have to compile it again
[22:07] <diederik> ktwo: what does 'uname -a' say?
[22:08] <ktwo> Linux raspi2b 4.1.6-v7+ #810 SMP PREEMPT Tue Aug 18 15:32:12 BST 2015 armv7l GNU/Linux
[22:08] <diederik> got it through 'rpi-update'?
[22:09] <ktwo> um.. yea i did nothing fancy its a clean installation of raspbian
[22:09] <diederik> It's not exactly finished, but here's a description on how to compile a kernel module: https://github.com/diederikdehaas/cknow.org/blob/master/rpi/compile-kernel-module-on-raspberrypi.md
[22:10] <ktwo> but anyway the module will break after upgrading the kernel?
[22:10] <diederik> usually it does, yes
[22:10] <ktwo> damn ;/
[22:11] <ktwo> I'm really angry about this with the seller of this damned wifi stick
[22:11] <ktwo> it even had "raspberry" support on its description
[22:11] <diederik> what's the usb id of it? lsusb will tell you

[22:12] <mape> I'm having some wierd issues getting HDMI output to work, i changed config.txt to use hdmi_safe=1 and I get the boot but it seems that after ".. starting version 175 .." it looses signal again. I've tried finding someone with a similar issue but can only find people that can't get it working at all. Anyone have any idea how to fix it? Just want to get it working so I can configure the network so I can ssh in.
[22:14] <ktwo> whats the difference of raspbian.org and raspberrypi.org kernel?
[22:14] <mape> I'm using 2015-05-05-raspbian-wheezy.img
[22:14] <diederik> the raspbian.org kernel has a kernel-headers package which makes compiling kernel modules a breeze
[22:15] <diederik> but the raspberrypi.org kernel works better atm on the Pi
[22:15] <ktwo> i have the raspbian.org kernel i guess? (since i installed raspbian?)
[22:15] <diederik> no, you have the raspberrypi.org kernel. especially since you used rpi-update
[22:16] <diederik> how did you install raspbian?
[22:16] <ktwo> with the noobs installer^^
[22:16] <diederik> then you surely have the raspberrypi.org kernel
[22:17] <ktwo> i thought the days of nonworking devices are over though :| , could i use NDISwrapper like in old times on the Pi?
[22:17] <diederik> I don't think NDISwrapper works nowadays
[22:18] <diederik> do you have the linux source code for your adapter?
[22:18] <ktwo> yup
[22:19] <diederik> then try setting up your system as described in the article and cd into your source code directory and then it's usually 'make' and then 'make install'
[22:19] <ktwo> actually i tried the whole procedure to compile it but ultimately i got a very "useful" error: Makefile:393: recipe for target 'LINUX' failed
[22:20] <diederik> then you need to figure out why it fails and try to fix that
[22:20] <diederik> how old is the source code?
[22:21] <ktwo> i followed this guide: http://groenholdt.net/Computers/RaspberryPi/MediaTek-MT7601-USB-WIFI-on-the-Raspberry-Pi/MediaTek-MT7601-USB-WIFI-on-the-Raspberry-Pi.html
[22:21] <ktwo> it says to clone https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux.git
[22:22] <diederik> that looks like a good guide
[22:22] <diederik> and yes, you have to download the linux (kernel) source code too
[22:22] <ktwo> couldnt i install 4.2 somehow? it says it has kernel support
[22:23] <diederik> you could try to compile your own kernel from the rpi-4.2.y branch
[22:24] <ktwo> i guess if it was that easy it wuold already be released xD
[22:24] <diederik> I doubt that will be easier though ;)
[22:24] <ktwo> ill retry compiling
[22:25] <diederik> 4.1 is a lts release, so there's a good chance that the new 'official' rpi kernel will be 4.1
[22:25] <diederik> this is just a guess on my part btw

[22:27] <diederik> yes, that's the reason that you have to recompile every time you use a new kernel

[23:15] <ktwo> how did you know that? :P
[23:15] <diederik> you've used the 'rpi-update' method, so you should use the instructions related to that
[23:16] <diederik> See the section 'If you're using rpi-update, the procedure is a bit different.'

[23:33] <diederik> you should do a 'make clean' in your driver source directory before starting again (not in your kernel sources!)
[23:33] <ktwo> i did that but there must be something left because the modprobe mt.. command still works
[23:34] <diederik> does lsmod list your driver module?
