[9:32] <dusty_> Hello, anyone know much about log file sizes and potential issues in Raspbian? I'm using a Raspbians syslogd to store syslog data received from my ddwrt router. /var/log/ddwrt.log is being monitored by a Splunk UF and then forwarding into a Splunk indexer. I've set up logrotate to rotate 2 files limited to 250MB, but I was wondering if a log file of this size could cause problems?

[10:51] <greyltc> gordonDrogon: cool
[10:51] <greyltc> How do you like it?
[10:52] <gordonDrogon> not used it much. bit dissapointed with the on-screen keyboard - originally thought the foundation did their own, but it's just a choice of 2 standard X utilities.
[10:52] <greyltc> Does any touch functionality work out of the box with rasbian and lxde?
[10:52] <gordonDrogon> yes - well mostly. Only left-click.
[10:53] <greyltc> so it basically just simulates a mouse left click where you touch
[10:53] <gordonDrogon> there is a tweak somewhere that will make a long-press simulate a right-click but I've not tried it.
[10:53] <greyltc> It would be great if gnome-shell actually worked.
[10:54] <gordonDrogon> would it? I tried gnome on my linux desktop for a while and decided I really did not like it.

[10:54] <greyltc> Well maybe you didn't like gnome because they've tried to design it with touch in mind
[10:55] <greyltc> And thats a trade off that seems to upset those of us who mostly use mice (see windows 8)
[10:56] <gordonDrogon> I've not used MS windows.
[10:56] <gordonDrogon> (since win XP at any rate)
[10:57] <gordonDrogon> however I've no other work to do. back later.

[10:58] <greyltc> I'd love to hear how that works
[10:58] <gordonDrogon> I've no interest.
[10:58] <gordonDrogon> really - the Pi is a small devleopment platform, not a desktop for me.
[10:58] <gordonDrogon> I mostly ssh in to edit & compile stuff.
[10:58] <gordonDrogon> I run a GUI up when I need to test my RTB though.

[12:28] <shiftplusone> 1) there are internal pull-ups you can use 2) I think the i2c pins already have pull-ups on the pi board itself. Or is it a 1-wire sensor?

[12:32] <gordonDrogon> The I2C pins have on-board 1K8 pullups.
[12:33] <shiftplusone> so 1-wire.... I believe there's a parameter you can use to specify that you want the internal pull-up on.
[12:33] <shiftplusone> But I am a bit too busy to look into that right now. I'd point you to /boot/overlays/README
[12:35] <gordonDrogon> you can set the internal pull-ups on most pins - it's not a 1-w specific thing.
[12:35] <gordonDrogon> the 1w pin is just an ordinary gpio pin as far as I recall.
[12:35] <shiftplusone> yes, but I believe you can specify a DT parameter to enable it without needing to do it manually.
[12:35] <gordonDrogon> ok
[12:36] <shiftplusone> There's a 'pullup' parameter, but I don't understand its description
[12:36] <shiftplusone> "Non-zero, "on", or "y" to enable the parasitic power (2-wire, power-on-data) feature"
[12:36] <gordonDrogon> the internal pull-up might not be strong enough though. the docs suggest 4k7 to 10k
[12:37] <gordonDrogon> then again, just looked at another manual and it suggests 1K. One of the I2C pins would be fine.

[12:43] <gordonDrogon> checking my notes - it will work without the resistor, but only for short wire lengths and you'll need the internal pull-up enabled.

[12:54] <daszorz> I'm going to get it connected first, I'm just looking up what internal pull-up is and how to enable it first
[12:54] <gordonDrogon> there is a demo program in the wiringPi source.

[15:45] <koshie> Hi, I've a weird problem on Raspbian: First I can't connect from SSH even if yesterday evening it was okay, even if I disable iptables and I put SSH on minimal settings (port 22, no AllowUsers etc) it doesn't works. And it doesn't have an IP for eth0 EVEN if I can see it on the network, but after a couple of minute, nothing.
[15:45] <koshie> An idea?
[15:45] <koshie> (when IO say nothing: no more IP)
[15:46] <koshie> I can't ping it, but the ISP router can see it for 2, maybe 3 minutes.

[18:44] <lordievader> molgrum: I'd try to find out why it is losing it's ip in the first place, if I were you.
[18:44] <molgrum> every machine does lordievader, i think
[18:45] <molgrum> but they get back on
[18:45] <molgrum> except the Pi
[18:45] <lordievader> molgrum: The packet capture you've sent shows otherwise.

[18:47] <gordonDrogon> I normally run without X too - things I remove are like any sort of network manager/resolvconf and most of the time I also remove dhcpd as I use static IPs on the Pi. I remove ifplugd too as I don't want it taking the interface offline.
[18:48] <gordonDrogon> FridoxFL, Obviously no-ones heard of it, or uses it ...

[18:51] <lordievader> molgrum: What I find very strange is that the Pi drops the ip without a DHCP release packet. Sure it could be coincedence that the lease ended, but that seems a bit unlikely.
[18:51] <molgrum> aha
[18:51] <molgrum> yeah that does indeed sound odd
[18:52] <lordievader> So either the packet capture doesn't show the complete picture, or something is really wrong.

[18:57] <lordievader> Yes, I find that strange... Why suddenly drop the ip for, what appears to me, no reason.
[18:58] <molgrum> lordievader: hmm, i haven't run raspi-config i think. could that be it?
[18:58] <shiftplusone> perhaps killing the dhcp client and running it manually in the foreground with whatever verbose/debug options there might be will give a hint?
[18:58] <lordievader> Unlikely.
