[1:01] <scoofy> what do you mean by that
[1:02] <nuxil> well
[1:02] <scoofy> maybe ask what you need
[1:02] <nuxil> i want to confirm that my math is right. i have a transistor, a general puyrpose type. i want to use a geo pin to switch it off/on.
[1:02] <nuxil> Using 6mA as set current for Ib (current basis), afik the geo pin high state is 3.3V.
[1:02] <nuxil> So if im not entierly wrong. my resistor on Basis should be 450ohm. right? Rb = (U - Ube) / Ib. => 3.3 - 0.6 / 0.006 = 450.
[1:02] <nuxil> Then set the strengt of the geo pin to 8mA. so the is a 2mA to go on.
[1:03] <nuxil> does this sound correct ?

[1:03] <scoofy> gotta go. hope someone can answer you.
[1:03] <nuxil> hah
[1:04] <nuxil> you dodge that one :p
[1:04] <scoofy> i have no idea. maybe ask #raspberrypi
[1:04] <nuxil> already did
[1:04] <scoofy> i'm more of a linux guy, not an electro guy
[1:05] <nuxil> its not electro. its electronics ;p
[1:05] <ajacmac> I just used the automatic installer by hifi and startx is apparently not a recognized command
[1:06] <ajacmac> I got the pi as a gift from a friend of mine with raspbian preloaded and everything worked great...until I had to use more than 50 megabytes, now after reinstalling I'm not sure what to do
[1:06] <scoofy> what do you want to do
[1:06] <ajacmac> the login details were root:raspbian so it isn't the same image
[1:06] <ajacmac> I want a graphical desktop
[1:07] <ajacmac> startx isn't recognized
[1:07] <scoofy> did you configure a graphical desktop?
[1:07] <nuxil> apt-get install xorg or whatever pak its in
[1:07] <ajacmac> no, the previous install didn't require that
[1:07] <ajacmac> ok, thanks
[1:08] <ajacmac> I was blown away when sudo wasn't recognized
[1:08] <nuxil> wot?
[1:08] <ajacmac> I sudo'd the apt-get install xorg
[1:08] <ajacmac> sudo wasn't recognized
[1:08] <ajacmac> it worked with the sudo removed
[1:08] <scoofy> what about su
[1:09] <scoofy> maybe your user is in the sudoers list
[1:09] <scoofy> 'su' command makes you root
[1:09] <nuxil> just dl that raspberry jessie or someting version. its light wight and has gui. and working sudo :p
[1:10] <scoofy> you can config that to boot into GUI desktop
[1:10] <ajacmac> I know su vs sudo
[1:10] <scoofy> ok
[1:10] <ajacmac> I'm terminal friendly, just not intimately acquainted, I've never had to configure a desktop before
[1:11] <ajacmac> I'm kind of like the windows 95 equivalent of a linux user
[1:11] <nuxil> there are tons of ones to chose from. i cant remember em all. gnome, kde, xfce, englightenment, oh. guess there are tonz more ;p
[1:11] <scoofy> lxde!
[1:12] <scoofy> if you have 512mb raspi, definitely lxde
[1:12] <ajacmac> mate post gnome
[1:12] <ajacmac> and yes, lxde is my jam
[1:12] <nuxil> nah.. fry your cpu and get kde :p
[1:12] <ajacmac> lol
[1:13] <ajacmac> I remember that one crazy looking thing ubuntu used by default on its netbook remix a while back, what was that called?
[1:13] * tjt263 (~RAPSCA77I@unaffiliated/tjt263) has joined #raspbian
[1:13] <ajacmac> idk about you guys, but I find a lot of these tablet style menus to be almost claustrophobia inducing, they feel so small
[1:14] <ajacmac> environment* not menu
[1:14] <ajacmac> I think raspbian comes with xfce by default, does it not?
[1:15] * bpugh is now known as bpugh-away
[1:16] <nuxil> somethign like that yeah. i just started mine once tho. to get it up and running. the rest of the time i been trying to get hw docs and info on how to make magic happen on the gpio pins.,
[1:16] <ajacmac> I've been using mine to teach my little brother pygame
[1:17] <ajacmac> I went searching for a better text editor than leafpad (idle annoys both of us) and ended up running out of space on the sd card
[1:17] <nuxil> hehe
[1:17] <nuxil> how big is the one you use?
[1:18] * bpugh-away is now known as bpugh
[1:18] <ajacmac> 32 gigs
[1:19] <ajacmac> but it was imaged, so I only had a tiny amount of space available
[1:19] <ajacmac> after screwing around with that I finally figured out how to get the partitions to behave
[1:21] <ajacmac> a friend bought me the pi, a case, hdmi cable, hdmi - vga adapter, mouse/keyboard, wireless adapter and preloaded 32 gig sd card for my last birthday
[1:21] <ajacmac> it was a huge surprise, in particular since he initially dropped it off for me to "borrow" and then never came back for it
[1:22] <ajacmac> a few weeks went by and I started getting concerned about holding onto it...but then he told me on my birthday that he had planned to give it to me from the beginning. He had bought two and only told me about the one to keept it a surprise
[1:22] <ajacmac> but he's a teacher and has the money to justify presents for an unemployed friend xD
[1:23] <ajacmac> ok, after typing startx a new screen shows up with just "root@pi:~# []" in the top left
[1:24] <ajacmac> the font is different, and I can't type anything

[3:38] <xtal256> I found the rtl8192cu module under /lib/modules, but lsmod does not list it
[3:38] <mybalzitch> tried modprobe rtl8192cu ?
[3:38] <xtal256> I can do insmod to load it, but then still cannot use wlan0
[3:38] <mybalzitch> oh
[3:38] <xtal256> modprobe fails
[3:38] <mybalzitch> whats dmesg say after you modprobe it
[3:38] <xtal256> FATAL error, cannot find module.
[3:38] <xtal256> or something like that
[3:39] <mybalzitch> run dmesg
[3:40] <xtal256> modprobe: FATAL: Module /lib/modules/4.1.7-v7+/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rtl8192cu/8192cu.ko not found.
[3:40] <xtal256> dmesg actually says "registered new interface driver rtl8192cu"
[3:40] <xtal256> So is it or isn't it loaded?
[3:41] <xtal256> lsmod lists "8192cu"
[3:41] <mybalzitch> its loaded, but may not be the correct driver for your wifi chipset
[3:41] <xtal256> But I don't see wlan0 in ifconfig or iwconfig
[3:42] <xtal256> I'm using a D-Link DWA-131
[3:43] <xtal256> http://elinux.org/RPi_USB_Wi-Fi_Adapters says it should be compatible with Wheezy
[3:43] <xtal256> I'm using Jessie
[3:43] <xtal256> Oh, wait. I just noticed that site mentions RTL8192SU, not CU
[3:44] <xtal256> Also, a different USB ID
[3:44] <xtal256> Mine is 2001:3319 (from lsusb)

[4:12] <JJJollyjim> Hey, I'm having a strange issue with the Raspbian download
[4:13] <JJJollyjim> The sha1 is correct, but OSX "Archive Utility" and unzip command find it invalid
[4:13] <JJJollyjim> Whereas "jar xvf" works!
[4:13] <JJJollyjim> Is that a known issue?
[4:15] <xtal256> Perhaps because it's too big for the archive utility. Windows craps out extracting it too, I had to use 7-Zip
[4:15] <xtal256> It's over 4GB uncompressed!
[4:19] <JJJollyjim> Ahh ok
[4:19] * JJJollyjim (79499669@gateway/web/cgi-irc/kiwiirc.com/ip.121.73.150.105) Quit (Quit: http://www.kiwiirc.com/ - A hand crafted IRC client)
[4:25] <xtal256> Ok, I've downloaded the drivers from Realtec website. Tried to compile, got errors naturally :(
[4:26] <xtal256> > /lib/modules/4.1.7-v7+/build: No such file or directory
[4:26] <xtal256> Should that directory exist?
[4:27] <mybalzitch> # apt-get install kernel-headers-$(uname -r)
[4:27] <mybalzitch> try that
[4:27] <mybalzitch> then try building again
[4:27] <klem> xtal256, if you have X on your Pi, you might check the repository. it might be faster and easier
[4:28] <xtal256> X?
[4:28] <xtal256> As in, the window system?
[4:28] <mybalzitch> yes
[4:28] <klem> graphic desktop
[4:29] <xtal256> How does that have a repository?
[4:29] <klem> startx from terminal if you're in terminal
[4:29] <klem> yeah, I think so, a package manager
[4:29] <xtal256> @mybalzitch: I don't have internet on the Pi.
[4:30] <xtal256> @klem: that would be apt-get
[4:31] <klem> yeah if you want a graphic one, you have to install synaptic
[4:31] <klem> I just assumed it had a graphic package manager built in
[4:31] <xtal256> I don't need a graphical package manager, I need internet so I can download the packages
[4:32] <klem> you have wifi only? no ethernet jacks at all where you are?

[4:38] <xtal256> But I can do it, sure. I'll try later.
[4:39] <xtal256> "you could put the RPi there and SSH into it"
[4:39] <xtal256> "you could put the RPi there and SSH into it" - Of course, why didn't I think of that!

[15:25] <klem> Pope523, I might be able to refer you to some web pages, but I don't have any specific experience with this. The only time I've run VNC was by starting it through SSH. [15:44] <StickyTowelFace_> Would ambro718: , Dezgeg: or viric: be available by any chance? I am still having trouble with https://nixos.org/wiki/Raspberry_Pi_2 . Once the system boots it prompts me: pi2 login: and I cannot for the life of me find what the un:pw is (it's not pi:raspberry) any suggestions? Or if anybody else had any insight that would be swell.

[15:48] <pope523> klem, It was me asking about VNC :)
[15:49] <pope523> It says it can't find the pid
[15:49] <klem> ok then after login if you attempt to kill the vncserver does it not recognize the pid? It may be that the server is running but you are not able to access it. I want to check thet. if its not running then we have to find where things fall apart on your boot script. I don't think its running because it's not returning a pid when you do services --status-all
[15:50] <pope523> It does not recognize the pid

[18:29] <gordonDrogon> try 8 bits, 1 stop bit and no parity.

[18:31] <hje841> hmm.. checking my setup again I see: 8bits + 1 stop bit and no parity
[18:31] <gordonDrogon> I've absolutely no idea about the discovery board, but some serial ports might want handshaking and will stall until they are present - if it has RTS/CTS pins or DTR/DSR pins on the connector then you might need to do something with them.

[18:32] <gordonDrogon> they can often be programmed to be ignored in software, but the usual easy way would be to short rts & cts together and short ctr & dsr together...
