[1:18] <celesteh> Hello, I've got a raspberry pi and a couple of usb sound cards, all of which worked yesterday. However, today, one of them makes a constant screetching sound and the other only shows up in dmesg error logs, but not in the adio preferences pane. I tried making a new SD card of jessie, but the problem persists. Is this just a weird coincidence?

[2:34] <anunnaki> diederik: yeah theres more output https://bpaste.net/show/32d57faa23fa
[2:34] <anunnaki> so i guess do what it says apt-get -f install
[2:35] <diederik> that will not fix it, this time (normally you should)
[2:35] <diederik> you're now on jessie, right?
[2:35] <diederik> better yet, can you pastebin your /etc/apt/sources.list
[2:37] <anunnaki> how do i check if im on jessie? the kernel is now update.. its using 4.1.7+
[2:37] <diederik> 'cat /etc/debian_version' return 8.*
[2:38] <diederik> but your sources.list should tell you as well ;-)
[2:38] <anunnaki> sources.list https://bpaste.net/show/b82f087fc530
[2:38] <diederik> copy + paste your first line
[2:39] <diederik> then change the second line so it has 'jessie-staging' instead of 'jessie'
[2:40] <anunnaki> debian version is 8.0
[2:40] <anunnaki> ok
[2:40] <diederik> after you've written your updated sources.list file, do apt-get update and then do 'apt-get -f install'
[2:41] * WillAmes (~py@ool-1826eaa1.dyn.optonline.net) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[2:41] * WillAmes (~py@ool-1826eaa1.dyn.optonline.net) has joined #raspbian
[2:42] <anunnaki> this was the page i was following if it matters or not.. didnt have that staging line in it. https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=121880
[2:42] <anunnaki> k
[2:42] <diederik> excellent, you should follow that page/thread
[2:43] <diederik> this is (hopefully) a temporary glitch. Normally you shouldn't use jessie-staging, but iirc it is now needed to fix this issue
[2:44] <anunnaki> ok good. thats the only time i dont mind having issues.. when theyre common :)
[2:44] * creemj (~mjc@121-99-228-40.static.orcon.net.nz) has joined #raspbian
[2:45] <diederik> they're not common. But it has happened recently before and I was helping fix the issue then (which the reporter actually fixed himself)
[2:46] <diederik> it was actually a somewhat different problem, but lets try it anyway
[2:52] <anunnaki> ah. i wonder what he did to fix it.
[2:52] <anunnaki> but right now packages are installing
[2:52] <diederik> phew :-P
[2:52] <anunnaki> well not installing but unpacking
[2:52] <anunnaki> i jumped the gun there
[2:53] <diederik> unpacking is part of the install process, let me know when it finishes or fails
[2:56] * cyborg-one (~cyborg-on@188-115-142-58.broadband.tenet.odessa.ua) Quit (Ping timeout: 276 seconds)
[2:57] * Marco_ (~Marco@2001:a61:1145:cf01:a4f2:824b:e7f0:1b7a) has joined #raspbian
[2:57] <anunnaki> hey hey.. lets be optimistic here :D
[2:57] <anunnaki> done. looks like it finished without errors
[2:58] <diederik> awesome, now you should edit your sources.list again and comment out the line with jessie-staging
[2:58] <anunnaki> should i ran apt-get dist-upgrade again now?
[2:58] <anunnaki> ah ok
[2:58] <diederik> no!
[2:58] <anunnaki> too late
[2:58] <anunnaki> just kidding
[2:59] <diederik> lol
[3:00] <anunnaki> btw that command 'cat /etc/debian_version' return 8.* didnt work for me
[3:00] * Smx (Elite8556@gateway/shell/elitebnc/x-utaoqjcanzkinzyd) Quit (Excess Flood)
[3:00] <anunnaki> i left off the first apostrophe
[3:00] * HD|Laptop (~Marco@wikipedia/harddisk) Quit (Ping timeout: 272 seconds)
[3:00] <anunnaki> then tried removing the one after version
[3:01] <anunnaki> so then i just did cat /etc/debian_version which just showed me 8.0
[3:01] <diederik> I use apostrophes to denote the beginning and end of a command, you shouldn't use it when executing
[3:01] <anunnaki> im not good with bash so i fugured that return was a command lol
[3:02] <anunnaki> yeah i know about the apostrophes signaling commands in chat lingo.. but since the command had return in there. i thought maybe they were needed.. i saw some very cryptic commands in my time with all sorts of punctuation so i figured what the hell..
[3:02] <diederik> return should've been returns (as in response)
[3:03] * Smx (Elite8556@gateway/shell/elitebnc/x-sdhfqguygdftyeuc) has joined #raspbian
[3:03] <anunnaki> i need to learn more about debian and its versions.
[3:03] <anunnaki> i never really got to play with debian till i got rpi and installed raspbian
[3:03] <anunnaki> i was a fedora user and now a gentoo user.
[3:03] * TheVoid (~thevoid@unaffiliated/thevoid) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)

[3:07] <diederik> https://www.debian.org/releases/
[3:10] <anunnaki> Theyre already working on Stretch eh?
[3:10] <anunnaki> probably be a while before thats out
[3:10] <diederik> plugwash: there seems to be a python/perl dependency problem with jessie atm, see discussion above ^^
[3:11] <diederik> as soon as a new stable is released, work begins on the next stable version
[3:12] <diederik> plugwash: the fix was temporarily enabling jessie-staging
[3:12] <anunnaki> nice.. i just help contributed to making raspbian better
[3:12] <diederik> (Y)
[3:13] <anunnaki> looks like a butt and thong
[3:13] <anunnaki> lol
[3:13] <diederik> lol, it's the code for a 'like' on facebook
[3:15] * otter768 (~otter768@cpe-67-11-53-3.satx.res.rr.com) has joined #raspbian
[3:15] <plugwash> diederik, hmm, there shouldn't be any signficant differences between jessie-staging and jessie at the moment, certainly I can't see any which would cause that
[3:16] <diederik> https://bpaste.net/show/32d57faa23fa
[3:17] <plugwash> yeah, that sort of thing is quite common if an update is interrupted mid-run
[3:17] <diederik> it could be that my workaround wasn't needed and just a 'apt-get -f install' alone would've fixed it
[3:17] <plugwash> I suspect the fix was running apt-get -f install and had nothing to do with adding jessie-staging to sources
[3:17] <diederik> lol
[3:20] * plugwash has been fighting with apt for years
[3:20] * Climuffff (~Climufff@ip1f13d6a8.dynamic.kabel-deutschland.de) Quit (Quit: Nettalk6 - www.ntalk.de)
[3:22] <diederik> I use aptitude for years now and actually never had a (real) problem with it :)
[3:23] <diederik> what's quite helpful is that it is way more verbose when things go wrong and that makes it easy to find a solution
[3:24] <plugwash> aptitude tries harder to find soloutions than apt, this makes it more likely to find a soloution but also makes it more likely to do crazy shit
[3:25] <plugwash> the "always check what it plans to do before saying yes" rule applies to an even greater extent with aptitude than apt
[3:25] <diederik> that may explain my aversion to the '-y' switch
[3:30] * IrishGringo (~chatzilla@2601:586:c200:6eaa:656f:e1ec:5247:c852) Quit (Ping timeout: 272 seconds)
[3:38] * YoY (~YoY@ltl56-2-88-169-169-201.fbx.proxad.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 244 seconds)
[3:44] * anunnaki_ (~chris@hellsgate.pl) has joined #raspbian
[3:44] * anunnaki_ (~chris@hellsgate.pl) Quit (Client Quit)
[3:45] <anunnaki> diederik: heh never knew that. Then again i dont use FB much. Im a twitter guy
[3:46] * DrShoggoth (~prakwtf@97-88-118-74.dhcp.stls.mo.charter.com) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[3:47] <anunnaki> so i should use aptitude more often then apt-get
[3:47] <anunnaki> *than
[3:47] <diederik> I like your explanation better though ;)
[3:48] <anunnaki> i think thats why it means LIKE.. who doesnt like a nice butt in a thong?
[3:48] <diederik> lol
[3:49] <diederik> as for apt-get vs aptitude, it doesn't matter much
[3:50] <diederik> When I started I found learning a CLI based package manager was essential and aptitude seemed/was more comprehensive (aptitude search is awesome)
[3:51] <diederik> and I was put off that you had to use lots of different apt commands to get the info you needed, while aptitude had it 'all in one'
[3:53] * laza (~laza@b2b-130-180-1-210.unitymedia.biz) Quit (Ping timeout: 265 seconds)
[3:53] <anunnaki> i dont think i used aptitude before.. except for following a guide once or twice and the author used aptitude
[3:53] <diederik> I often use testing/unstable/experimental on my main PC (debian) and then the more powerful dependency resolve of aptitude is quite handy.
[3:54] <diederik> But for stable you'd rarely need it
[3:54] * noobe1 (~prezla@135-23-123-163.cpe.pppoe.ca) has left #raspbian
[3:54] <diederik> aptitude is (way ?) slower then apt-get though.
[3:54] <diederik> Never noticed it, until I started using the Pi
[3:55] <anunnaki> im usually not a stable user.. i like it when things break (not on my servers though) but once i learn raspbian/debian better ill swqitch to unstable. I use unstable on my main system. I like it when things break so i can learn more. computers are no fun when they just work.
[3:55] <diederik> haha! exactly my reasoning :)
[3:56] * laza (~laza@b2b-130-180-1-210.unitymedia.biz) has joined #raspbian
[3:56] <anunnaki> slower? pfft. i use portage package manager... i forgot what fast was
[3:57] <diederik> I have actually only experience with apt
[3:58] <anunnaki> portage compiles everything from scratch
[3:58] * andrew_ (~andrew@116.30.110.181) has joined #raspbian
[3:59] <anunnaki> no binaries.. unless you tell it to get a binary or you can make a binary for yourself for the future or a binary for another kind of system
[3:59] <diederik> I realize it gives you ultimate control and is a good learning experience, but you'd have to learn so much before you can get a working system
[3:59] <diederik> so debian's binary packages were perfect for me
[4:00] <diederik> I have actually never used 'apt-get source' in all the years I'm using debian
[4:00] * jteneyck (~jteneyck@unaffiliated/josephteneyck) has joined #raspbian

[4:24] <anunnaki> ok so i lost connection to my pi via ssh. i connected the hdmi to it and there was no signal on my tv
[4:24] <anunnaki> i had to unplug it. so i plugged it back and everything looked good intializing although different stuff scrolled compared to what im used to seeing with wheezy
[4:25] <anunnaki> but then the screen turned black
[4:25] <anunnaki> i know the page i was folowing said the screen will turn black for a little bit but that was after i logged in via command prompt, that is if the gui didnt start automatically
[4:25] <anunnaki> my gui never started automatically in the first place.. i always had to do startx
[4:25] <plugwash> screen going black sounds like the GUI is trying to start but failing somehow
[4:26] <anunnaki> im going to try sshing into it now
[4:26] <anunnaki> cant ssh
[4:26] <anunnaki> so no wifi yet
[4:27] <anunnaki> but the wifi adaptor light is blinking as normal. even did a double blink just now
[4:27] <anunnaki> and the sd card light is blinking every 5-6 seconds
[4:28] <anunnaki> ah
[4:28] <diederik> do a 'nmap -sP 192.168.1.0/24' (if your network is 192.168.1.x) and see if it shows up
[4:28] <anunnaki> i was able to get into the tty
[4:29] * Akex_ (uid58281@gateway/web/irccloud.com/x-fqylgzrfawgqewxp) Quit (Quit: Connection closed for inactivity)
[4:29] <anunnaki> Failed to start Login SErvices
[4:29] <anunnaki> Failed to start LSB : OpenBSD Secure Shell Server
[4:30] <anunnaki> and some other packages i have like tvheadend and kodi stuff
[4:30] <anunnaki> ok
[4:34] <anunnaki> oh wait cant run that command
[4:34] <anunnaki> im using cygwin right now on windows and i didnt install nmap on it
[4:34] * evilroots (~evilroots@70.33.29.182) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[4:35] <anunnaki> i have my linux booted in virtual box.. but im running diagnostics on it because its having a problem with the filesystem and the wifi is the one thing that got messed up from it
[4:35] <diederik> if you can get into the tty, you should be able to troubleshoot
[4:35] <diederik> the nmap command is to determine whether it got an ip address and which
[4:36] <anunnaki> i ran nmap on it anyway without there being wifi and it said Nmap done: 256 IP addresses (0 hosts up) scanned.. so def need my wifi up on that
[4:37] <anunnaki> you can tell i dont use nmap much except when following a thread to fix something
[4:37] <diederik> you said you got a new kernel?
[4:37] <anunnaki> diederik: yeah the pi showed the newer kernel
[4:37] <diederik> how did you previously get the drivers for your wifi adapter?
[4:38] <anunnaki> diederik: the wifi adaptor just worked when i plugged it in
[4:38] <anunnaki> for my main system i had to compile the drivers in the kernel
[4:38] <diederik> ok, it may not work anymore ...
[4:38] <anunnaki> i then tried setting them as modules to see if that helped with whatever knocked my wifi out
[4:38] <diederik> if you have the tty 'connection' you can check whether wlan0 is up
[4:39] <anunnaki> becuase its acting like the drivers arent built in the kernel
[4:39] <anunnaki> diederik: no no tty
[4:39] <anunnaki> i was only able to see tty1
[4:39] <diederik> that could indeed be the case, or the wrong ones
[4:39] <anunnaki> but couldnt scroll thru the initialization
[4:39] <diederik> that is a tty ...
[4:39] <anunnaki> no login on it or the other ttys
[4:39] <anunnaki> the other ttys looked like there was a cursor or soemthing in the top left corner
[4:40] <diederik> with a GUI it switches to tty7 and it looks like your GUI isn't working
[4:41] <anunnaki> yeah
[4:41] <anunnaki> i unplugged the wifi adaptor and plugged it back in.. shows the messages on the tty.. but its waiting for the link to become ready
[4:42] <anunnaki> keyboard is working but lights are not lighting up on it
[4:42] <diederik> but if you can get a console on tty1 (Ctl+Alt+F1) you can enter commands and thus troubleshoot ... or am I missing sth?
[4:42] <anunnaki> yeah i can see the initialilzation on tty1
[4:42] <diederik> what happens if you press <Enter> on your keyboard?
[4:42] <anunnaki> but no prompt
[4:42] <anunnaki> cant type or scroll thru the messages or anything
[4:42] <anunnaki> nothing happens
[4:44] <anunnaki> when i got to tty7 the keyboard lights work again.. just not on the other ttys
[4:44] <diederik> what happens if you unplug wifi, do you get your console back?
[4:44] <diederik> and can you then login?
[4:45] * valdur55_ is now known as valdur55
[4:47] <anunnaki> ill try
[4:52] <anunnaki> i unplugged the wifi.. rebooted. everything scrools ok.. stops at installing knfsd then continues starting more services saying ok. then it hits failed to start login service. scrolls more srevices like samba saying ok. hits tvheadend and fails. scorlls more ok services. hits OpenBSD Secure Shell server which fails and XBMC mmedia center then finally ends on Started PErmit User SEssions which is OK
[4:52] <anunnaki> but no login

[4:55] <anunnaki> yeah i dont think there is any way unless i manually edit files on the sd card in my tablet here since i have a sd reader built in..
[4:56] <anunnaki> but who knows what files need to be edited or whats wrong even
[4:56] <anunnaki> udev and dbus seem fine since the keyboard and mouse are working
[4:56] <anunnaki> just that login.. failing to start
[4:56] <anunnaki> ill have to google that
[4:56] <anunnaki> i forgot this was systemd too

[4:58] <anunnaki> and everything says ok but the login service
[4:58] <anunnaki> would that have anything to do with getty?
[4:59] <anunnaki> a long time ago i had an issue with a login and tty on my gentoo and one of the devs had me edit some files i never explore and remember it was getty files
[5:00] <diederik> putting (exact) error messages ( and systemd) in a search engine is what I would do

[14:47] <nd> maybe it is the spi driver
[14:47] <nd> how can I unload it ?
[14:47] <nd> and deactivate it ?
[14:49] <gordonDrogon> well - if you don't need those pins it's mostly harmless.
[14:49] <gordonDrogon> but if you need to use them, then try running: sudo raspi-config and disableing it in the advances section.
[14:49] <gordonDrogon> to just get that one line out of the gpio program, try: gpio readall| grep CE1

[14:59] <gordonDrogon> no - it's direction is IN.
[15:00] <gordonDrogon> so its not driving anything.
[15:05] <nd> sorry I don't understand
[15:06] <gordonDrogon> the pin direction is input - that's the IN in the line above.

[21:52] <fred1807> I am facing a very strage issue, I hope someone with a vast knowloadge of linux may have a hint of what it is. My raspberry box works with ehternet cable for internet access. I can plug and unplug the cable, now and then, to use it. It always works... But I found that if the box remains ON for 1 or 2 weeks WITHOUT the cable attached, I cannot connect to the internet anymore. The strange part is that, once the ehternet cable is plug, i DO get ip lease
[21:52] <fred1807> dhcp, I can communicate with internal lan... But no more outside internet world... How strange? Some hints: my reslv.conf file has dns set to google's 8.8.8.8 .8.8.4.4 (and read only , so this is never changed). The raspberry does not have a clock (no HW clock, and no fake clock driver).... So my only hpoe is that some time issue may be causing this (every power restart makes the raspberry 1969 again).... So far my only fix to this is re cloning the
[21:52] <fred1807> card with the system... (BTW, I know this is not critical, I may just acquire now ethernet cables, so I never need to leave the box without it.... But This got my imagination, I wonder if someone can have a hint)
