[12:58] <rawtaz> hi, im having an issue where a rpi 2 model B loses its networking at times. previously it happened like once a week or even per month, so we did a quick fix of rebooting it every night, but now it's happened twice during the last weekend. the dump from /var/log/messages is at https://pastebin.mozilla.org/8886684 if anyone cares to take a look. its runing rasbian updated since a month or two.
[12:58] <rawtaz> ive seen discussions about this problem before but they all seem to have come to a conclusion without any real explanation, except where there was patches applied that made it work for people again. but clearly it isnt entirely resolved
[13:00] <marcushh777> rawtaz, what do you mean loses its connectivity?
[13:01] <marcushh777> loses its networking?
[13:01] <rawtaz> it doesnt respond to any network communication (i can only try via ssh though)
[13:01] <l9> binaryhermit: yeah it seems like it is a mapper of some sort, added too the raspbian OS. couldnt get why one would need it
[13:01] <rawtaz> unfortunately it is remote so i cannot sit at the terminal of it when it happens
[13:01] <marcushh777> rawtaz: can you ping it
[13:01] <marcushh777> ?
[13:01] <rawtaz> marcushh777: another symptom is that ntpd cannot access any sites, i.e. traffic originating from the pi doesnt work either
[13:02] <rawtaz> marcushh777: i havent been able to try that im afraid
[13:02] <rawtaz> marcushh777: oh and another service as well. so while it's possible that it could regain connectivity by restarting networking, it's not able to access anything on the network without some form of action
[13:02] <marcushh777> rawtaz: try this... when it appears to lose connection... try to ssh to it... and let it sit for however long... and they retry and let it sit for however long....
[13:03] <marcushh777> see if you can 'wake-it-up'
[13:03] <rawtaz> right, i can probably do that with a setting on the ssh telling it to wait long
[13:03] <marcushh777> yup
[13:03] <marcushh777> rawtaz: my PIs do this from time to time... has something to do with the repeater
[13:03] <rawtaz> it's port forwarded through a router though in case that matters. but ill give it a shot
[13:04] <rawtaz> marcushh777: do you mean with a networking repeater or something in the pi?
[13:04] <marcushh777> rawtaz: network repeater: PI -->repeater --> router --> main router -->
[13:04] <marcushh777> sometimes my PIs appear to go to sleep... but I can wake them up with a repeated ssh try...
[13:05] <rawtaz> hm ok. a repeater for the wifi or something? i rarely use repeaters, especially in a cable network
[13:05] <rawtaz> i see
[13:05] <rawtaz> so when this happens, are you seeing the same dump in the logs as the ones i pasted?
[13:05] <marcushh777> a repeater for the wifi in my case... range extender
[13:05] <rawtaz> i see, makes sense
[13:05] <marcushh777> I have not looked, sorry
[13:05] <rawtaz> ive wondered if it has to do with the router and how it communicates with the pi, it might
[13:05] <rawtaz> ok no problem
[13:06] <rawtaz> its in /var/log/messages if you want to peek at some point
[13:06] <marcushh777> rawtaz: I have thought it might be an arp or arp cache problem...
[13:06] * telecode101 (~telecode1@128.100.81.108) Quit (Ping timeout: 250 seconds)
[13:07] <marcushh777> rawtaz: its like it has to take some time to re-establish the address resolution to mac address again... and it takes about 30 seconds sometimes
[13:07] <marcushh777> a ping is not enough to wake it up...
[13:08] <marcushh777> rawtaz, if this is the trouble, you might be able to get around it by having the machine ping out evey now and again , from a crontab entry
[13:09] <rawtaz> hmm ok
[13:09] <rawtaz> there is a service runing on it, that tries to do a HTTP call every now and then. when this problem occurrs, that service (using urllib2 in python) fails to contact the server, and this remains the case until we reboot it (or whatever else can be done about it)
[13:10] <rawtaz> so it doesnt seem to get it sorted by itself at this point at least
[13:10] <rawtaz> im gonna start by adding a http service on it so i can monitor it and get a notice when it happens

[13:24] <Luit> hi!
[13:24] <Luit> I just installed a new raspbian (had a failed SD card), and now my serial won't work...
[13:24] <Luit> I've disabled it in raspi-config, but instead of freeing the device from the kernel console it just completely disappears
[13:26] <marcushh777> Luit: PI 3B?
[13:26] <Luit> no, Zero
[13:27] <marcushh777> Luit: your serial console stops working, or, your serial uart communicatio stops working?
[13:27] <Luit> I use it to read a serial signal from my Smart Meter, marcushh777
[13:27] <marcushh777> k
[13:27] <Luit> but /dev/ttyAMA0 doesn't exist
[13:28] <marcushh777> well, there are some things you can try
[13:28] <marcushh777> look at your /dev folder
[13:28] <Luit> yes
[13:28] <marcushh777> do you have a serial0 and|or serial1 ?
[13:29] <Luit> nope
[13:29] <marcushh777> ok add two lines to your /boot/config.txt and reboot
[13:29] <marcushh777> core_freq = 250
[13:29] <marcushh777> enable_uart = 1
[13:29] <marcushh777> ^^^
[13:29] <Luit> let's see
[13:30] <marcushh777> Luit: and then reboot
[13:30] <marcushh777> Also, Luit, make sure that the serial console item is not in /boot/cmdline.txt
[13:30] <marcushh777> ^
[13:31] <Luit> thanks, didn't know raspi-config now disabled the uart altogether when disabling the cmdline feature
[13:31] <Luit> the enable_uart was set to 0 there
[13:31] <marcushh777> see if that works... I'll hold on
[13:31] <Luit> it's working! :D
[13:31] <Luit> expected none other
[13:31] <marcushh777> yeeaaahhh

[20:21] <Kano> it is very small, works with 4.4 too
[20:21] <Kano> but the 4.2 dkms crashes now...

[22:47] <vagrantc> Tenacious-Techhu: if you're really, really lucky, extundelete might work
[22:48] <vagrantc> although best to shut down the system first, and try from another computer
[22:48] <Tenacious-Techhu> Does that come with raspbian by default?
[22:48] <Tenacious-Techhu> Because if it doesn’t, then wouldn’t downloading it put my deleted files at risk?
[22:49] <Tenacious-Techhu> Isn’t there an existing tool to do that job?
[22:49] <vagrantc> yes
[22:49] <vagrantc> which is why i said to use it from another computer
[22:49] <vagrantc> no idea if it is included in raspbian, but i wouldn't recommend trying for exactly the reasons you're talkinga bout
[22:49] <Tenacious-Techhu> Well, what can I do straight from Raspbian, then?
[22:50] <vagrantc> simply continuing to run raspbian will decrease the liklihood of being able to recover your deleted file
[22:51] <Tenacious-Techhu> Well, regardless, I’d rather not have to run to another computer every time this sort of thing happens.
[22:51] <vagrantc> this is what backups are for
[22:51] <Tenacious-Techhu> Plus, doesn’t wear-levelling reduce the risk of the file being overwritten?
[22:51] <vagrantc> not in any way you're likely to be able to retrieve it
[22:51] <Tenacious-Techhu> Yeah, yeah, and if I had a backup, I wouldn’t be here asking, would I? :P
[22:52] <Tenacious-Techhu> The file gets the dirty bit set when it’s deleted...
[22:52] <Tenacious-Techhu> Wear levelling means the entire rest of the card has to be written to before that part of the card is written to again...
[22:52] <Tenacious-Techhu> So I’m not seeing the problem.
[22:52] <Tenacious-Techhu> Regardless, I’d like a solution that can be used from Raspbian, so I can immediately undelete the thing the next time it happens.
[22:53] <vagrantc> install extundelete in the future
[22:53] <Tenacious-Techhu> What do you know about debugfs?
[22:53] <vagrantc> not much, but if you're willing to go that route, all power to you!
[22:53] * telecode101 (telecode10@128.100.81.108) Quit (Ping timeout: 258 seconds)
[22:53] <Tenacious-Techhu> “Willing” is one thing; knowing what the hell I’m doing is another.
[22:54] <vagrantc> clearly :)
[22:54] <Tenacious-Techhu> I moved some files from the desktop of one user to another, and deleted the old user, and the files went with it. :P
[22:54] <vagrantc> if you really need undeletion features, you might want to explore revision control, snapshotting filesystems, etc.
[22:55] <Tenacious-Techhu> Yeah, that’s not the sort of problem I’m facing.
[22:55] <vagrantc> but in general, undeleting files isn't really a strong point for linux
[22:55] <vagrantc> it's better at deleting them
[22:55] <Tenacious-Techhu> How hard is flipping one lousy bit? :P

[22:56] <vagrantc> find out, and enlighten us all!
[22:56] <kols2> hello!
[22:56] <Tenacious-Techhu> That’s like saying Linux is lousy at flipping bits. :P
[22:57] <vagrantc> alternately, that it's good at doing what you asked it to do
[22:57] <vagrantc> at least, when it comes to deleting things
[22:58] <vagrantc> though modern SSD and ram-based devices do add some interesting twists
[23:00] <kols2> huh, I was just going to ask you guys about SSDs
[23:00] <Tenacious-Techhu> Unless you’ve set things to overwrite, it’s just going to flip the dirty bit. :P
[23:01] <Tenacious-Techhu> And with wear-leveling, that section shouldn’t be overwritten until the rest of the SD card has.
[23:01] <vagrantc> and all the dirty bits are exposed at the OS level?

[23:05] <Tenacious-Techhu> You don’t even know what the “dirty bit” is, do you?
[23:06] <vagrantc> i know wear levelling marks things as used or unused and whatnot
[23:06] <vagrantc> but the gritty details, no, not really
[23:07] <vagrantc> to avoid needing to know such things, i use backups.
[23:08] <Tenacious-Techhu> When a file is deleted, a bit is flipped on that file to mark the space that file takes up as unused; nothing else about the file is changed.
[23:08] * eallenvii (~eallenvii@c-71-205-211-200.hsd1.co.comcast.net) has joined #raspbian
[23:08] * vagrantc wasn't sure that was true of ext filesystems
[23:08] <Tenacious-Techhu> Now, if you configure a system to specifically write zeros to that space and so on, then yeah, the file is gone forever...
[23:09] <vagrantc> though that sounds very much like how fat filesystems worked
[23:09] <Tenacious-Techhu> It’s possible that it may not be, but you’re not exactly telling me what is true about them. :P
[23:09] <Tenacious-Techhu> Pretty much ALL filesystems worked that way.
[23:09] <vagrantc> i don't happen to be a filesystem expert
[23:09] <Tenacious-Techhu> From Mac OS to Windows.
[23:09] <Tenacious-Techhu> If Linux doesn’t work that way, it’s pretty odd.
[23:10] <vagrantc> odd != wrong
[23:10] <Tenacious-Techhu> I don’t disagree.
[23:10] <Tenacious-Techhu> My point is, you have to give me a more compelling argument for it not doing that than it merely being Linux.
[23:10] <Tenacious-Techhu> Pretty sure Unix worked that way too.
[23:11] <Tenacious-Techhu> Not that I have first-hand experience with it.
[23:11] <vagrantc> at any rate, i do recall, back when i started using linux stuff some ... 18 or so years ago ... one of the main cautions was "don't assume you can undelete files because it's a lot harder to recover than various other operating systems that you might be used to"
